Heath Styer

Heath Wayne Styer, age 25, died as a result of a car accident at Ravine Lake at Huron, South Dakota on June 27, 1995. Heath’s remains were recovered July 2008. His memorial service to celebrate his life was held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 2, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church, Huron with the Rev. Kevin Channell officiating.

Heath Wayne Styer was born September 22, 1969, to Dennis and Cheryl (Houge) Styer at Huron. Heath attended various schools in South Dakota and graduated from Hot Springs, South Dakota in 1988, where he was in the top percentage of his class. He also attended Boys State and was active in football and basketball. Heath enjoyed playing American Legion baseball during the summer. He and his brother, Jason, went on a trip with the baseball team to the eastern part of South Dakota where they played ball and attended a Twins game. While in high school, Heath worked at the South Dakota Soldier’s Home at Hot Springs. He also worked at Wind Cave. After graduation, Heath and his family moved to Marion, South Dakota, where he worked at Western Printing at Sioux Falls and bean bugged in the summer months. In 1990, the family returned to Huron, South Dakota where Heath was employed at Wrap It, Coastal gas station and was the night manager at Happy Chef. Heath also drove truck for a time with his father. Heath was employed at Pizza Hut at the time of his death.

Heath loved Harley Davidson motorcycles, old cars and the Dallas Cowboys. He owned a 1964 Chevy Impala SS, a 1981 Chevy Camaro Z-28 and a 1986 Harley 883 Sportster.

Anyone who ever met Heath was greeted with a great big smile that would make your day. He was very family oriented.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Quentin Houge; paternal grandfather, William “Bill” Styer; and his great grandparents.

Happy to have shared his life are his mother, Cheryl and her husband, David Davidson of Huron; his father, Dennis Styer and his companion, Kathy Wipf and her family of Rapid City; a brother, Jason and his wife, Tammy Styer of Mitchell; a sister, Michelle and her husband, Steve Paye of Huron; a half-brother, Brian Jordan and his family of Illinois; maternal grandmother, Wilma Houge of De Smet; paternal grandmother, Carolyn Styer of Huron; a nephew, Gavin Styer of Mitchell; two step-sisters, Leslie and her husband, Lynn Weston of Missouri and Angela Young of Texas; two step-nephews; two great step-nephews; four step-nieces; four great step-nieces; and many aunts; uncles; cousins and friends.

Norma Nelson

Norma L. Nelson, age 81, of 1345 Michigan Ave SW, died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Sun Quest Health Care Center. Her funeral service was 10:00 AM, Monday, August 4th, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Senner officiating. Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens cemetery.

Norma Lockwood was born January 26, 1927, to Norman and Frances (Bosley) Lockwood at Doland, South Dakota. She attended school and graduated from Doland High School.

She attended a business college at Mankato, Minnesota for one year. Norma worked as a secretary for the South Dakota Bankers Association for several years.

On June 25, 1950, Norma married Harland Nelson at Rapid City. Norma and Harland with Harold Owens operated the Double H Ice Cream Store and then Harold’s Cafe'. In 1967, Norma and Harland opened the Barn Restaurant, which they ran successfully for thirty-eight years. She took great pride in the being the Barn’s hostess, and could be found carrying customer’s fussy babies around while their parents ate.

Norma and Harland enjoyed dancing at the Moose Lodge and traveling together until Harland’s health limited their travels. She was the chairperson for Coffee Day for Crippled Children. Norma enjoyed her flowers, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, baking and bowling. She loved animals, especially the family pets. Norma cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harland on November 30, 2007; one daughter-in-law, Joan Nelson; and one great-grandson, Gaige Nelson.

Grateful for having shared her life are her five children, James Nelson of Huron, Julie and her husband, Robert Lubke of Sioux Falls, Jane Nelson of Huron, Jeffrey Nelson of Huron and Joel and his wife, Amy Nelson of Huron; twenty-one grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joe and his wife, Sondra Lockwood of Sioux Falls, Don and his wife, Cleo Lockwood of Brookings and Tal and his wife, Faye Lockwood of Rapid City; two sisters, Marge Devine of Lake Elsinore, California and Corinne Hanson of Bloomington, Minnesota; one brother-in-law, Max Bjerke of Bradley; one sister-in-law, Wanda Nelson of Clark; and seventeen nieces and nephews.

Gilbert Scheibe

Gilbert Scheibe, age 83, of Wolsey, died Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service was at 10:30 AM Saturday, August 23, 2008, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wolsey with the Rev. L. Scott Spiehs officiating. Burial was in the St. John’s Lutheran Church cemetery with military rites by the Hershman-Gordon American Legion Post #59 of Wolsey.

Gilbert Scheibe was born February 11, 1925, to Paul and Emma (Meyer) Scheibe at Wolsey. He was baptized March 5, 1925, and confirmed November 6, 1938, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Gilbert grew up on the family farm near Wolsey and attended country school. Gilbert farmed with his brother, Mores Scheibe. He was drafted into the United States Army on May 4, 1945, at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota. He was discharged on December 12, 1946, at Camp Hood, Texas and returned to farming.

On March 27, 1946, Gilbert married Nellie L. Stobbs at Brownwood, Texas. He retired from farming in 1986.

Gilbert was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Hershman-Gordon American Legion Post #59 of Wolsey, and the Wolsey Senior Center. He loved his family, the land, and enjoyed farming, gardening and hunting. Gilbert cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nellie on February 13, 2008; one grandson, Daryn Lee Haeder; two brothers, Raymond and Mores Scheibe; and three sisters, Gertrude Kahre, Evelyn Eichstadt and Lucille Erion.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Linda Haeder of Wolsey; three sons and their wives, Terry and Roxy Scheibe of Huron, Randy and Karen Scheibe of Custer, and Myron and Carolyn Scheibe of Eldridge, Iowa; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Donna and Trayce Gilbert Haeder; Corey, Jessica, Richard and Tyler Haeder; Todd, Mickie and Kaden Scheibe and Tanner and Carli Keefe; Scott and Katie Scheibe and Karlie Valer; Robyn Scheibe; Ryan Scheibe; Lisa and Aaron Tekippe; Nathan and Michelle Scheibe; and Mark, Lindsey and Benjamin Scheibe; one sister and her husband, Edith and Martin Eichstadt of Wolsey; three sisters-in-law, Cordula Scheibe of Wolsey, and Edna Peterson and Blanche McNeil both of Huron; one brother-in-law, Richard Eichstadt of Wolsey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Viola “Vi” Voigt

Viola “Vi” Voigt, age 88, of Greeley, Colorado and formerly of Huron, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at Greeley, Colorado. Her funeral service was at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 9th at the Huron Mission Church with the Rev. Richard Birr officiating. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens cemetery.

Viola Mae Jurrens was born April 6, 1920, to Tim and Lena (Roll) Jurrens in Bon Homme County, South Dakota. She grew up on a farm near Avon and attended school there. Vi received her G.E.D. from Huron College.

On September 9, 1939, Vi married Herman Voigt at Worthington, Minnesota. They lived there until 1947, when they moved to Tyndall, South Dakota. Vi and Herman spent one year at Tyndall and then moved to Huron in 1948. Vi worked for Randall’s Foods for 15 1/2 years, retiring in 1984. She later returned to work for Coborn’s Foods as a food demonstrator.

She accepted the Lord as her Savior and faithfully served Him. Vi was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church of Huron and at the time of her death, was a member of the Huron Mission Church. She was a charter member of the Lioness Club and a member of the Huron Area Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman on September 26, 1981; one son, Harland on September 27, 1999; three brothers, Chester, Raymond and Leroy Jurrens; one brother-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two children and their spouses, Dianne and Wally Decker of Greeley, Colorado and Kevin and Debbie Voigt of Springfield, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Tammy and Neil Coyle of Cambridge, Minnesota, Cindy and Bucky Schumacher of Sioux Falls, Corbin and Tammy Voigt of Portland, Oregon, Kristin and Richard Delp of Harleysville, Pennsylvania, Ryan and Jessica Voigt of Anchorage, Alaska, Cory Voigt and Kendele Johnson of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and Adam Voigt and Ashley Voigt of Springfield, Illinois; twelve great-grandchildren, Megan and Josh Coyle, Jerrod, Tory and Alyssa Schumacher, Zachary, Parker and Cameron Voigt, Abigail and Allison Delp, and Ruger and Caiden Voigt; two brothers and their wives, Eldon and Carol Jurrens of Avon and Virgil and Maxine Jurrens of Madison, Wisconsin; and two sisters, Leatta and Palmer Schortzmann of Merced, California and Erma Dykstra of Avon.

Hazel A. Gross

Hazel A. Gross, age 85, of Huron, died Saturday, June 7, 2008, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service was at 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at the Bethel Mennonite Church, rural Yale, with the Rev. Ray Shepard officiating. Burial was in the Bethel Mennonite Church cemetery, rural Yale. Memorials may be directed to the James Valley Scholarship Fund.

Hazel Alice Gross was born November 2, 1922, on a farm northeast of Huron to Andrew and Susie (Hofer) Tschetter. She grew up on the family farm and attended Sunshine School, a one-room school in Iowa Township. Hazel attended Yale High School for two years and graduated from Huron High School in 1942. During this time she worked on N.Y.A., did light housekeeping, and worked at a convalescent home for her room and board. Hazel then attended Business College and worked at Newberry’s in Huron.

Hazel accepted Christ as her Savior on Mother’s Day in 1942, at the Huron Mission Church with Rev. Joe Wipf as pastor. On July 19, 1942, she was baptized by Rev. Zack Wipf at Ravine Lake in Huron. She became a member of Bethel Church of Yale and taught in Sunday school, Bible school and on Wednesday night. She and Elmer were strong supporters of Bethel Church and James Valley Christian School.

On July 11, 1943, she married Elmer Gross at Yale. They farmed in Iowa Township on the farm where Hazel grew up. Elmer and Hazel celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 11, 1993.

On August 1966, her son, Wayne was in an automobile accident, which left him paralyzed. She gave many years of loving care to him both in her home and as he became independent.

Hazel moved to Huron in 1994, but always enjoyed driving past her old farm and seeing the crops. In July 2005, she moved to Stoneybrook Suites and became a resident of the Huron Nursing Home in August 2007. Hazel was always content wherever she lived, and appreciated when friends and family visited. Her gentle and caring spirit was known by many. She enjoyed keeping up her diaries and scrapbooks with events and activities of people that she knew.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Elmer Gross on October 16, 1993.

Grateful to have shared her life are her four children, Jim (Patty) Gross, of Yale, Dave (Paulette) Gross, of Yale, DeLane (Allen) Wipf of McKinney, Texas, and Wayne (Doreen) Gross, of Circle Pines, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Mari (Quint) Hofer, Eric Gross, Jonathan (Ranie) Gross, Tim (Sheri) Gross, Rachel (Brian) Fizel, Michelle (Brian) Wanttie, Amber Gross, and Desa Gross; fourteen great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Irene (Lee) Scott, of Wessington Springs, Doris Culver, of Huron, and Jeanette (Owen) Johnson, of Huron.

Hazel Newell

Funeral services for Hazel Newell, 73, Aberdeen and formerly of Lemmon and Billings, MT, were held Oct. 9, 1999, at Calvary Lutheran Church. Revs. John Langehough and Harold Watrous officiated with internment in Greenhill cemetery.

Casket bearers were her grandsons, Rocky Newell, Garry Wayne Johnson, Kenny Gene Paulson, Jesse Newell, Todd Dauwen and Robby Johnson. Special music was provided by Mary Jean Jensen, organist, and Roland Hoffman, organist.

Hazel Hannah LaRue was born Aug. 26, 1926, to Floyd and Lela (Hannah) LaRue at their farm in North Lemmon Township, Adams County, ND. She grew up on the farm, attending North Lemmon School and Lemmon High School. She worked at local restaurants and in 1944 went to Pasadena, CA, where she worked for Lockheed Aircraft during World War II. She later moved to Tacoma, WA, and again worked in a cafe.

She married Bud Newell July 19, 1946, at Baker, MT. They lived in Lemmon where Hazel continued to work in local cafes and raise her family, while Bud worked as a trucker. In 1976 they moved to Billings where she worked at the Ponderosa School in the lunchroom and playground. In 1993, they moved to Aberdeen where they have lived since. She had been on dialysis since March 1991, and had been hospitalized since May 9, 1999. She died Oct. 5, 1999, at Avera St. Lukes Hospital in Aberdeen.

Survivors include her husband, Bud, Aberdeen; five sons, Gary and Ray, Aberdeen, Dennis, Floyd and Billy, Billings; five daughters, Susan Johnson, Sandy Paulson, Pam Dauwen and LaDonna Dauwen, all of Lemmon, and Debbie Riester, Wilbur, WA; 28 grandchildren; three great grandsons; one brother, Larry LaRue, Belle Fourche; and two sisters, Delores Guzzite, Yelm, WA, and Lillian Clarkson, Rogers, AR.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Roni Sue; her parents; and two sisters, Molly LaRue and Lu Marty.

James 'Jim' Witt

Funeral services for James 'Jim' L. Witt, 50, Hettinger, were held Oct. 9, 1999, at the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Lemmon. Chaplain David Peterson officiated with burial in Greenhill cemetery. Special music was provided by Marge Willey, organist, and Marilyn Willey, soloist. Casket bearers were Mark Baker, Dalton Papka, Matt Korang, Larry Hehn, Dan Mollman, Doug Butler, John Wagner and Tom Munyon.

James LeRoy Witt was born Aug. 7, 1949, at Elgin to Robert Francis and Leola Irene (Crow) Witt. He moved with his family from Lemmon in 1955 to a farm southeast of Lodgepole. He attended the Carr School for eight years, one year of high school in Lemmon and then high school in Hettinger, graduating in 1968. He worked for area farmers and ranchers and went south on custom harvesting crews. He worked in the Texas oil fields and did welding in Oklahoma. In 1989, he returned to the family farm in Perkins County and in the off season picked up work wherever he could. Since the early 1970's, he drove semi-truck. He went to work at Oakes, ND, Sept. 27, helping a crew harvest potatoes. He was killed in a farm related accident there on Oct. 2, 1999.

He was a member of the ABATE Motorcycle Club.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Leola Witt, Hettinger; five brothers, Lyle and Mike, Hettinger, Dan, Meridian, MS, Tom, Marion, SD, and Jerry, White Butte; one sister, Joyce Lewton, Delphos, OH; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

A memorial has been established.

Delmer Rook

Memorial services for Delmer Duane Rook, 59, Billings, MT, were held Sept. 24, 1999, at the Harlowton Moose Lodge.

Delmer Duane Rook was born Jan. 17, 1940, in Lemmon. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Harlowton for several years.

Survivors include his wife Patricia, Billings; one brother, Vernon Rook, Phoenix, AZ; two sisters, Dorothy Wells, Lemmon, and Marlyes Hindman, Belle Fourche; one daughter, Laurel Buckholz, Bowman; five step-daughters, Bonnie Freeberg, Harlowton, Kathleen Hone, Pinegree, ID, Diane Livingston, Billings, Gail McEwin, Billings and Brenda Hanson, Redding, CA; several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Lawrence Brown

Funeral services for Lawrence Brown, 74, Harding County rancher, writer and agricultural activist, were held Sept. 30, 1999, at the Harding County High School Auditorium in Buffalo. Rev. Hans Sacrison officiated with special music by the Holsti Sisters. Interment was in the Cave Hills cemetery, north of Buffalo. Casket bearers were Greg Richter, Dwayne Adams, Terry Hafner, David Neimi, Jerry Janvrin and Bob Johnson.

Lawrence Brown was born Feb. 23, 1925, at Bowman, ND, to Esther E. (Haivala) and John A. Brown, pioneer Harding County ranchers. He grew up on the family ranch and attended Harding County schools, graduating from "Aggie" school at Brookings in 1943. In 1946 he purchased the Gust Jorgenson ranch near Hoover.

He married Helen Delores Davis Sept. 15, 1951, at Rapid City. In 1956, Lawrence and his brother, Maurice, traded ranches, with Lawrence and Helen moving to the Cave Hills ranch, the homeplace of his parents. They lived there until his death, Sept. 26, 1999, at St. Lukes Tri State Hospital in Bowman.

In the early 70's he began writing and established the Nations Center News in 1976. In 1979 he sold the newspaper, continuing his writing, authoring four books, "Buffalo Commons Memoirs", "A Red Chimney for Her Lamp, "$ and Gut Level Politics" and "Cowboy Lore and Cookery." Until the time of his death, he published a newsletter entitled "Opinion from the Deep Plains, " in which he exercised his wit, agricultural advocacy, local and national political commentary and stories of life in Harding County. In 1976, he actively pursued appointment as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. He was a member of the Grand River Lutheran Church, served on the church council, the Sunset Foundation Board of Directors, the local school board, the Harding County Planning and Zoning Board and the County School Reorganization Board. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and many farm ranch organizations including the South Dakota Sheepgrowers and South Dakota Stockgrowers.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; three sons, Dan and J.D., both of Buffalo, and John, Pierre; one daughter, Melanie Healey, Shakopee, MN; ten grandchildren; one brother, Maurice Brown, Rapid City; two sisters, Lenora Iverson, Des Moines, ID, and Betty Rose, Roseville, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Eldon Jensen Funeral Homes.

Lynn G. Mitchell

Funeral services for Lynn G. Mitchell, 82, long-time Lemmon area farmer/rancher and Perkins County Commissioner, were held at Calvary Lutheran Church Sept. 29, 1999. Revs. John Langehough and Harold Watrous officiated with interment in the Greenhill cemetery with military honors by Brattvet Green American Legion Post. Special music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Jensen. Casket bearers were Mark Evans, Roger Sonn, Justin Mitchell, Cody Mitchell, Roy Mitchell and Wayne Burnett. Honorary casket bearers were Hank Wagner, Bob Wheeler, Gordon Hersrud, Bob Jangula, Joe Wunder, Bill Krambeer, Ellsworth Wikle, Joe Meier and Robert Wright.

Lynn Gale Mitchell was born March 28, 1917, at Arlington, SD, to Dale and Blanche (Hardy) Mitchell. Dale and Blanche homesteaded on the North Grand River and Blanche returned to Arlington for the birth of her children. Lynn grew up on the homestead and attended school at the Dahl School and graduated from Lemmon High School in 1934. In 1935 the family moved to the Alvin Mitchell place in Trail Township where Lynn farmed and ranched until his death. In the early 30s he worked in apple orchards and on a dairy farm in Chehalis, WA. He returned to the Lemmon area going to work at the Bamble Hardware Store. In 1938 he began working as a Chief Clerk at the Ordinance Office at Ft. Meade. He enlisted in the Army during WWII. He returned to Lemmon to farm in Feb. 1946.

He married Ione Sabastion on July 27, 1939, at Rollo, NE. The couple made their home in Perkins County where he served 22 years as county commissioner and several years on the state and county weed control boards. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Lynn and his brother, Lyol, were members of the Lyol Mitchell Dixieland band, traveling throughout the area entertaining for dances and benefits. He was a Gunsmith and big game hunter. One of his prizes was a wolverine that he bagged in Montana that was later displayed at the New York World's Fair. This trophy was stolen from the Fair display and never found.

Survivors include his wife, Ione; two nieces; two nephews; and several cousins.

Obert S. Thorson

Funeral services for Obert Thorson, 94, Hettinger, were held Oct. 2, 1999, at Bucyrus Lutheran Church in Bucyrus. Intern Rev. Dale Wilford and Rev. Ron Nelson officiated with burial in the Hettinger cemetery. Special music was provided by Marilyn Engraf, organist, and Wayne and Allen Markegard. Honorary casket bearers were Linda and Jane Stockman, Robin Yale, Suzanne Doerr, Kristi Flasted and Deborah Ihle. Active casket bearers were Mark Stockman, David Ihle, Larry and Billy Doerr, Greg Yale and Evin Flasted.

Obert Severene Thorson was born May 30, 1905, in Yucatan Township, Houston County, MN, to Herman and Sophia (Moen) Thorson. Along with his parents, he moved to rural Bucyrus in 1907 where the family homesteaded. He graduated from Wolff Butte School and farmed with his dad. He married Faye G. Jones Oct. 24, 1929 at Hettinger. In 1939 he was appointed supervisor for the South-west District of the North Dakota Highway Department until 1940. In 1941 they lived in Bucyrus while farming with Obert's father. In 1950, they moved to the family homestead where they continued farming until 1975 when they retired. Obert entered Hillcrest Care Center in 1993 and has resided there since. He died Sept. 28, 1999. He served on various township boards, the REA Board of Directors and was a member of Bucyrus Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Faye, Hettinger; one daughter, Betty Stockman, Bismarck; one son, Billy Thorson, Hettinger; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one sister, Minnie Larson, Hettinger; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Davetta Ihle; and two sisters.

Betty Liedke Hill

Betty Liedke Hill died on Oct. 20, 1999, as a result of an automobile accident.

She was a 1946 graduate of Lemmon High School and resided in Penn Valley, CA.

She is survived by two sons, Greg and Tandy, a daughter, Betsy, and two granddaughters.

As a Lemmon High School student, she was a member of the "Old Maids" club along with Joayne Brown Hogaboom, Merna Anderson Votau and Dorothy Evanson Klausner. The group had kept in contact for more than 50 years via a round robin letter and reunions.
