Andy Hoffman

Mass of Christian Burial for Andy Hoffman, 78, rural Mott, was held on Oct. 27, 1999, at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul in Mott. Rev. James Kilzer officiated with interment in St. Vincent's cemetery. Casket bearers were Justin and Jenny Eikamp, Gary and James Butler and Les and Randy Friez. All friends were considered honorary bearers. Special music was provided by Marla Mosher, pianist, and MiChelle Finck and Don Loh, vocalists.

Mr. Hoffman died Oct. 22, 1999, at his home southeast of Mott.

Andy Hoffman was born Dec. 1, 1920, to George and Anastasia (Dolecheck) Hoffman at their rural home near South Heart, ND. He grew up in the area and attended country school. He later joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and served near Mt. Rainier, WA. After he returned from the CCCs, he farmed with his father.

On July 15, 1941, he married Martha Brueni of Zenith, ND. They farmed in the area for ten years and in 1950, purchased a farm southeast of Mott where they have resided since.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mott and the Mott Knights of Columbus. He also served on the Merrill Township Board for many years, the Commercial Bank of Mott board and on his local election board.

Survivors include his wife, Martha, Mott; two daughters, Sandy Hoffman, Mott, and Mrs. Dorrance (Linda) Eikamp, Gillette, WY; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Allen R. Markegard

Funeral services for Allen R. Markegard, 48, rural Hettinger, were held on Oct. 28, 1999, at Hettinger Lutheran Church. Revs. Stephen M. Sherer and Dale Wilford officiated with burial in Hettinger cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to his children's education and the Badlands Lutheran Ministries Bible Camp.

Special music was provided by Brian and Jonathan Markegard, Chad Hill, Chad Wayen, Anne Strehlow and Charlotte Morey, organist. Casket bearers were his brothers, Wayne, David and Jon Markegard; his brothers-in-law, Wally, Allan and Dean Kowis, Lynn Stadheim, Dave Gunderson, Lenny Collins, Bob Sivak, Kim Shafer; his cousins, Dennis Schwartz, Ronald Nester, Harvey Oase, Greg Oase, Kenneth Markegard, Neil Hofland; and friends, Gene Solseth, Bill Thompson, Roger Dieterle, Kerry Dangerud, Harvey Jeffers, Mike Mellmer and Brad Edin. All Allen's family and friends were considered honorary bearers.

Allen Richard Markegard, 'Rhubarb' to his family and friends, was born Oct. 4, 1951, at Hettinger to Winston Guy and Carol Mae (Ballweber) Markegard. He grew up on the family farm and attended grade school in Bucyrus, graduating from Hettinger High School in 1969. During his grade and high school years, he participated in basketball and wrestling. He began farming and ranching with his family six miles north of Bucyrus at an early age.

He married Della M. Kowis on June 16, 1979, at the Markegard farm and they have farmed and ranched there since.

Allen sang in a barber shop quartet in his youth, with the "Family Singers, " and also played his guitar and sang for different occasions in his church and the community. He was a member of Bucyrus Lutheran Church and had served on the church council as president and in other capacities. He also served on the Wolfe Butte Township Board and was President of Adams County Farm Bureau and Badlands Lutheran Ministries.

He died on Oct. 24, 1999, after suffering a heart attack at his home earlier that evening.

Survivors include his wife, Della, and their children, Blake, Sarah and Sally, all of rural Hettinger; three brothers, Wayne and Jon, both of Hettinger, and David, Parker, CO; and three sisters, Linda Markegard, Rapid City, Polly Stadheim, Reeder, and Debra Gunderson, Pine River, MN.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1963 and his mother in 1984.

Josie A. Stewart

Funeral services for Josie A. Stewart, 87, longtime Lemmon educator, were held Oct. 25, 1999, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon. Rev. Harold Watrous and Rev. John Langehough officiated with interment in Greenhill cemetery. Casket bearers were Randy Miller, Charles Haynes, Floyd Short, Vernon Evanson, John Randen, Jim Duncan, Arlen Bartells and Gordon Dreiske.

She died on Oct. 19, 1999, at Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon.

Josie A. Stewart was born March 25, 1912, at Keldron, to John and Lena (Nelson) Vatland. She was raised on the family homestead south of Keldron and attended rural schools in Corson County. She graduated from Morristown High school in 1930 and then attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, initially to get a teachers certificate and began her teaching career in the rural school systems.

In 1938, she married Vance F. Stewart, Sr. and moved to Lemmon. She began teaching at Lemmon Elementary in 1943 and over the next 34 years, taught and influenced scores of students. She continued her college studies over the years by taking summer session courses at Northern State and completed requirements to graduate with a B.A. degree in 1962. She retired from teaching in 1977.

Josie served as Lemmon's U.S. Weather Service Observer for more than 33 years and incorporated the duties into her classrooms and school curriculum.

She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, its ladies organizations, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Live Center, Shriner's Ladies Auxiliary and other civic and social organizations.

A yearly scholarship for a Lemmon High School senior entering the education field is being established in Josie's name.

Survivors include one son, Vance Stewart Jr., Burnsville, MN, and Zacatecas, Mexico; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one sister, Katherine Haynes, Lemmon.

In addition to her parents and her husband in 1963, she was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Nora Hoffman

Funeral services for Nora H. Hoffman, 89, lifelong Perkins County resident were held Nov. 12, 1999, at Calvary Lutheran Church. Rev. Harold Watrous officiated and internment was in Greenhill cemetery. The casket bearers were her grandchildren.

She died Nov. 9, 1999, at West River Regional Medical Center.

Nora H. Hoffman was born April 25, 1910, in a sod home at Seim, (Perkins County) SD to Ben and Marie (Stigen) Nilsen. She was raised on the family homestead between the forks of the North and South Grand Rivers. She attended a rural school near her home and was confirmed at Rosebud Lutheran Church. She married Robert Hoffman June 9, 1928, at Lemmon and they began their life together on a farm in the Petrel community west of Lemmon, farming with his family. They moved into Lemmon from the farm in the early 1970s. Mr. Hoffman died March 1, 1975, and Nora continued to maintain her home in Lemmon.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty Williams, Bismarck, Rondi Schockley, Twin Falls, ID, and Paula Johnson, Lemmon; two sons, Allen, Sheridan, WY, and Rodney, Morristown; 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; five sisters, Mildred Hoffman, Lemmon, Bernice Schober, St. Paul, MN, Margaret Veal, Meadow, Marlys Wright, Kent, WA, and Violet McNew, Boulder, CO.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three sisters, Bertha Lovelette, Alpha DeNomme and Gladys O'Keefe; and three brothers, Milo, Melvin and Alvin Nilsen.

Susan Huber

Memorial services for Susan L. Huber, 43, Boone, NC, were held Nov. 12, 1999, at the Presbyterian Church in McIntosh. Rev. Patricia M. Higgins officiated with burial in the McIntosh cemetery.

Susan Lynn Anderson was born March 21, 1956, at Edward Gary AFB in San Marcos, TX, to William John "Bill" and Doris (Trace) Anderson. Her father was in the Air Force and stationed in various states including North Dakota. She graduated from C.M. Russel High School in Great Falls, MT, in 1974, and attended Webber State University in Ogden, UT. She met Rich Huber in Minot where he and her father were both stationed in the Air Force. They were married at Dyess AFB Chapel in Abilene, TX, June 21, 1975.

They began their life together at Minot AFB where Rich was stationed in the Air Force and she began working at First State Bank. They moved to Abilene, TX, in 1982 where she worked as a loan clerk for Citizen's State Bank. In 1985, they moved to Okinawa, Japan and in 1988, moved to Holliman AFB, Alamogordo, NM, where she worked for Dyncorp Corporation in the Human Resources and Payroll Department.

Following Rich's retirement from the Air Force in 1994, they moved to Dover, DE, where she worked in Payroll and Accounting for an oil company. In 1996, they moved to Boone, NC, where she was a loan processor in the Student Financial Aid Office at Appalachian State University.

She had a small setback with cancer in February 1999, but through treatments, had managed to regain her health. She was killed in an automobile accident Nov. 3, 1999, in Boone, NC.

Survivors include her husband, Richard, and one son, Christopher, both of Boone, NC; her father and mother, Ret. Col. William "Bill" and Doris Anderson, Abilene, TX; two sisters, Sandra Salazar, Phoenix, AZ, and Leslie Montisano, Houston, TX; her father and mother-in-law, Phillip and Elizabeth Huber, McIntosh and two nieces.

A memorial has been established to the Sue Huber Memorial, Watauga Medical Center, PO Box 2600, Boone, NC 28607.

Ted Kari

Mass of Christian Burial for Ted Kari, 67, Bison, was held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Bison. Revs. Ed Vanorny and Arnold Kari officiated with internment in the Bison cemetery. Casket bearers were Bill Marty, Melvin Seymour, Jim Schlosser, Ray Wicks, Edward Chapman and John Hay.

Ernest Theodore Kari was born to Ernest C. and Melinda (Atteberry) Kari at the Kari ranch in Wyandotte Township, Perkins County, south of Prairie City on April 28, 1932. He lived and worked on the ranch all of his life, attending two rural schools near his home. After completing nine years of education, he attended a year of Agriculture School at Brookings. At a young age, he returned home and managed the ranch. He married Mary Lesselyoung at Sacred Heart Church in Strool, SD, Aug. 18, 1955.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church at Reva and an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary. He had been in failing health for some time and died Nov. 7, 1999, at his ranch home.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Ernie, Prairie City, and Dale, Huron; one daughter, Lynette Engle, Rapid City; six grandchildren; one sister, Violet Chapman, Bison; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, John, and one sister, Florence Wicks.

Phillip Little Bear

Funeral services for Phillip A. Little Bear, 41, Lemmon, were held Nov. 11, 1999, at the Prince of Peace Chapel of Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home. Deacon Bill Dustman officiated with internment at the Black Hills National cemetery on Nov. 12, 1999.

Phillip Little Bear was born to Fremont Joseph and Julia (Traversie) Little Bear at Mobridge on Feb. 2, 1958. He grew up in the Kenel area, receiving his early education there. He was disabled at a young age, and later came to live at the LIVE, Inc. in Lemmon on Nov. 6, 1985.

He received training to become more independent doing bench assembly work. He died Nov. 8, 1999, at West River Medical Center.

He is survived by one aunt, Alma Little Bear; and one uncle, Melvin Little Bear, both of Kenel.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Elvis Little Bear.

Martha Bauer

Funeral services for Martha Bauer, 80, Elgin, were held on Feb. 19, 2000, at the Assembly of God Church in Elgin. Revs. John Osborne and Ellis Ryherd officiated with burial in the Prairie View cemetery at Heil. Special music was provided by Jody Osborne, Marcy Haase and Eldon Jensen. Casket bearers were Dave, Jim, Gene, Marlow, Scott, Melissa and Allen Bauer.

Martha Martell was born April 23, 1919, at Elgin to Jacob F. and Christina (Guthmiller) Martell. She attended grade and high school in Elgin graduating from Elgin High School in 1938. She then worked at the FHA office in Carson until her marriage to Raymond Bauer on Dec. 11, 1938, at Elgin.

They farmed in the Heil area until 1964, when they retired due to health reasons. During these years she was an assistant 4-H leader, was involved with the Heil Homemakers Club and did seamstress work for neighbors and friends.

In 1967, they moved to Fargo where she was employed as a seamstress at the Strauss Men's Store. In 1982 they moved to Elgin where they have resided since.

She has been in failing health the past four years and died on Feb. 13 at her home in Elgin.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond, Elgin; three sons, Gene Bauer, Stillman Valley, IL, Jim Bauer, Elgin, and Marlow Bauer, West Fargo; 14 grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother, August Martell, Newberg, OR; six sisters, Pauline Wutzke and Eleanor Hoks, and Alma Martell, all of Elgin, Emma Oset, Billings, MT, Olga Hammond and Anna Schmuck, both of Newberg, OR.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jake Martell; and three sisters, Ida Stevahn, Freda Leer and Christine Weishaar.

Pauline Bierwagen

Funeral services for Pauline Bierwagen, 74, Lemmon, were held on Feb. 15, 2000, at the Prairie Hills Church of God. Rev. Wayne Chant officiated with interment in Greenhill cemetery. Special music was provided by Dennis Batson, pianist, Pat Peterson, organist, Darrel and Marcia Klitzke, Julie Loper, Wanda Roso and Sherry Chant, vocalists. Casket bearers were Clif Bierwagen, Ron Bierwagen, Dennis Batson, Chuck Batson, Yvonne Shockley, Vicki Klitzke, William Huber and Sam Schram. The Church of God Friendship Circle and all friends and neighbors were considered honorary bearers.

A memorial has been established to the Prairie Hills Church of God.

Pauline died following surgery on Feb. 10, 2000, at a Bismarck, ND, hospital.

Pauline Wolfe Bierwagen was born Jan. 24, 1926, in the Havelock-Regent area of Hettinger County, ND, to John and Lydia (Kirschmann) Wolfe. She attended school in a rural school near her farm home. The family later lived north of Burt, ND, and she worked there and later in Bismarck.

On Oct. 10, 1944, she married Eddie R. Bierwagen at New Leipzig. They began their life together on their farm three miles east of Bentley, ND. In 1951, they moved to Lemmon where they owned and operated the Mobil Gas station on Highway 12 until 1959. They then went into partnership with her sister and brother-in-law, Hilda and Bill Huber, in the Lemmon Plumbing and Heating business until 1970. They still maintained their farming interests over the years. Pauline also operated a restaurant for a time, clerked at a local grocery store and worked as a secretary at Five Counties Hospital. They started their retirement years in 1989, they started their retirement years, spending time in Arizona and Oregon during the winter months.

Pauline was active in the Church of God and Friendship Circle of the church. She also served as the church custodian for several years.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie Bierwagen, Lemmon; two sons, Clif, Gillette, WY, and Ron, Lemmon; one daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Faye) Batson, Roseburg, OR; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and two sisters, Hilda Huber, Rapid City, and Katherine McKim, Fort Gibson, OK.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ralph 'Boots' Kemnitz

Memorial services for Ralph L. 'Boots' Kemnitz, 82, Dickinson, were held Feb. 16, 2000, at Price-Murphy Funeral Home in Dickinson. Internment was Feb. 17 in the Black Hills National cemetery at Sturgis.

He died Feb. 12, 2000, at Medcenter One in Bismarck.

Ralph L. 'Boots' Kemnitz was born on Dec. 10, 1917, in Aberdeen to Frank and Lena Kemnitz (South Dakota Mother of the Year in 1959). He was educated in the Aberdeen school system through his college graduation from Northern in 1940. He married Delphia Benscoter on June 9, 1941, while he was a member of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Boots' Army career took him through 35 states and several European countries, including France, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium. His assignments included underwater demolitions, duty as head instructor of a commando unit where he trained men in hand-to-hand combat and judo, and commanding a German Prisoner-of-War camp at Rheims, France.

Following his discharge in 1946, at the rank of Captain, he coached and taught at Lemmon, where his team continues to hold a record for the most consecutive wins in basketball. He taught history and science.

Boots opened a clothing store in Bowman in 1948 where he remained for 20 years prior to embarking on a new career in the insurance business. He retired from Blue Cross/Blue Shield in 1984.

Boots continued his military experience as member of the National Guard. He formed a Guard unit in Bowman and was recalled to active duty, during the Korean crisis, with that unit. Upon release from active duty once more, he rejoined the South Dakota Army National Guard and served until his retirement in 1962.

An outstanding athlete in high school and college, Kemnitz earned ten college letters and was honored by being inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Northern State College in 1987.

He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Dickinson State University Blue Hawks Booster Club. In 1988 he was the first to receive its Honorary Letterman's Award.

Survivors include his wife, Delphia, Dickinson; three sons, Ralph A. 'Chip' Kemnitz, Philip, Larry L. Kemnitz, Bismarck, and Michael L. Kemnitz, Oakley, CA; one daughter, Rochelle L. Langer, Lincoln, ND; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother, one son, Gary, and two granddaughters.
