Raymond Rieker

Funeral services for Raymond Rieker, 73, Lemmon, were held on Feb. 17, 2000, at Calvary Lutheran Church. Rev. Harold Watrous officiated with interment in Greenhill cemetery. Casket bearers were John Wells, Neale Lorius, Larry Moser, Doug Neibauer, Larry Rieker, Ron Holdahl, Russ Olson and Jim Duncan.

He died on Feb. 11, 2000, at a Prescott, AZ, hospital.

A memorial has been established.

Raymond Rieker was born in the Howe community of Grant County, ND, on March 2, 1926, to Rudolph and Louisa (Baker) Rieker. He attended grade school at Howe and worked for area farms and ranches in his youth.

He married Shirley Holdahl on April 22, 1946, at Baker, MT. They raised their family in Lemmon where he spent several years working for the Mobil Oil Co., Standard Oil Co., Lemmon Livestock, State Highway department and the City of Lemmon. He retired in 1989.

He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Sharon) Crevier, Lemmon, and Mrs. Jeff (Sandy) Duncan and Mrs. Michael (Stacy) MacArthur, both of Prescott, AZ; two sons, Randy Rieker, Coalville, UT, and Raymond Rieker Jr., Lemmon; 15 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; three sisters, Bernice Trautman and Mildred Holdahl, both of Lemmon, and Irene Olson, Sioux Falls; and three brothers, Harold Rieker, Modesto, CA, Oscar Rieker, Seattle, WA, and Robert Rieker, Missoula, MT.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 8, 1996; one son, Richard; one great grandson, Zachary Johnson; one brother, Ruben; and six sisters, Martha Mindt, Lorraine Brown, Marlys Nelson, Esther Ulrich, Doris Smebakken and Adeline Rieker in infancy.

Lawrence 'Pappy' Stokes

Funeral services for Lawrence 'Pappy' Stokes, 93, Hettinger, were held on Feb. 14, 2000, at the Hettinger Lutheran Church. Rev. Stephen M. Sherer officiated with burial in the Hettinger cemetery. Special music was provided by Charlotte Morey, pianist, and Norman and Bonnie Smith, vocalists. Casket bearers were Todd, Paul and Michael Bortke, Michael Krueger, Al McIntyre and Mike Marion. All friends were considered honorary bearers.

Lawrence Martin 'Pappy' Stokes was born Aug. 1, 1906, at Harris, MN, to Edward and Mercy Evelyn (Stuttle) Stokes. In 1912, he moved with his parents to Oakes, ND, and in 1917 to Hettinger where they operated a grocery store. Lawrence attended grade and high school in Hettinger, graduating from Hettinger High School in 1924. He began working at a local drug store where he earned enough money to attend college. He attended Polk College in LaPorte, IN, a music and piano tuning school, graduating on Aug. 3, 1926.

Lawrence moved from Hettinger in 1927 to Philadelphia where he played in numerous big bands along the east coast until 1930. He worked part-time at a drug store there and tuned pianos on the side. In 1930, he returned to Hettinger where he started his own piano tuning business. He played in numerous big bands, night clubs, jazz festivals and dances throughout North and South Dakota and surrounding states.

He married Dorothy Bortke on April 27, 1971, at Reeder and they continued to live in Hettinger.

He entered Hillcrest Care Center on Jan. 24, 2000, where he died on Feb. 10.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, Hettinger; two stepsons, Al Bortke, Bismarck, and Len Bortke, Crystal, MN; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Norm (Gen) Krueger, Mandan; five step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Nellie, Mary Eleanor, Effie and Edith; one brother, Joel; and one step grandson, Jeffrey Krueger.

Bonnie Campbell

Mass of Christian Burial for Bonnie Campbell, 69, rural Keldron, was held on May 29, 2000, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon. Rev. Dennis Riss officiated with burial in Greenhill cemetery in Lemmon.

Casket bearers were Dean LaDue, Richard Wiesinger, Lynn Wolf, Gordon Picker, George Gilland and Nub Long. Honorary casket bearers were all her friends and relatives. Ushers were Dennis Schneider and Willard Ottman.

Special music was provided by Bart and Gillian Damjanovich and Amanda Campbell.

She died at her home on May 26, 2000, due to natural causes.

Bonnie Campbell was born July 8, 1930, to Harry and Leola (Nicholie-Alkire) Moser in Adams County, ND. She attended school at the Orange School #1 in Adams County and Lemmon High School. She married Dale Campbell on Sept. 21, 1953, in Aberdeen. They made their home on the ranch and also farmed in Adams County, ND. Along with the ranching, Bonnie worked at The Lemmon Leader for 18 years.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and of St. Joseph's Circle.

Survivors include her husband, Dale, Keldron; one son, Todd, Lemmon; three daughters, Mrs. Bob (Nola) Dietz, Lemmon, JoDee Campbell, Sturgis, and Mrs.. Scott (Vicki) Walters, Keldron; one brother, Larry Moser, Lemmon; five sisters, Bernice Mullikin, Protem, MO, Iona Baumeister, Lemmon, Rosemary Peterson, Lemmon, Millie Roland, Rapid City, and Kay Smyle, Reeder; ten grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, two sons, one daughter and one grandson.

Gerhard 'Jerry' A. Christianson

Funeral services for Gerhard 'Jerry' A. Christianson, 90, Hettinger, were held on June 5, 2000, at Hettinger Lutheran Church. Rev. Robert L. Boxrud officiated with burial in the Hettinger cemetery.

Special music was provided by Linda Nudell, organist, and Norman Smith, soloist. Honorary casket bearers were all of Jerry's grandchildren and great grandchildren. Active casket bearers were Laverne Stippich, Alvin Skaarvold, J.B. Lindquist, John Molbert, Ray Jahner, Milton Marthaller, Robert Week, Orville Haugen, Duane Cregger and David Muggerud.

A memorial has been established.

Gerhard Arthur Christianson was born Aug. 22, 1909, near Haley, ND, to Gunvald and Amelia (Anderson) Christianson. His parents came to this country from Norway. He attended school in Haley Township, Bowman County, ND, graduating from the eight grade in the spring of 1924. Jerry worked on the family farm near Haley until 1936 and during the winters of 1928 through 1931, he worked at a coal mine near Reeder and then for a coal mine near Scranton. From March 15, 1936, to Oct. 31, 1939, Jerry worked for Farmers Union Oil Company in Reeder. A branch of the Reeder Farmers Union opened in Hettinger on Nov. 1, 1939, and Jerry was hired as branch manager.

He married Clara Berg on March 22, 1941, in Hettinger. They began their life together there and Jerry continued to serve as manager until retiring in December 1975. Following his retirement, he continued to work part-time helping out wherever he was needed for the next six years.

He was a member of Hettinger Lutheran Church, the Eagles, the Airport Authority, Civil Air Patrol, Sons of Norway, the Hettinger cemetery Board and past member of the Hettinger City Council.

He died on May 31, 2000, at West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.

Survivors include his wife, Clara, Hettinger; four daughters, Mrs. Irvin (Lynda) Goetz, Westminster, MD, Mrs. Gary (LaVonne) Foss, Lemmon, Mrs. Lew (Ardell) Samdel, Puyallup, WA, and Karen Fandrich, Bonney Lake, WA; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Connie Rue and Lorraine Cooper.

Emma Schoch

Genevieve Mary Kahl, 83, Sturgis, died at her home on May 28, 2000.

Funeral services were held on June 1, 2000, at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. James Olson officiating. Burial was at Bear Butte cemetery.

A memorial has been established to Bethesda Lutheran Church at Leith, ND, and Grace Lutheran Church, Sturgis.

Genevieve was born in Grant County, ND, on Aug. 17, 1916, to Henry John and Leona Ellen (Tracy) Gaugler. She grew up in Pretty Rock, ND, and married Paul G. Kahl at Carson, ND, on Jan. 14, 1939. They ranched in Grant County for 56 years before moving to Sturgis three and one-half years ago.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a former member of Bethesda Lutheran Church. She served on the Howe Township Board as clerk and on the school board at Pretty Rock. She was also a member of the Homemakers Club.

Survivors include her husband, Paul, Sturgis; one son, Kermet Kahl, Shadehill; two daughters, Mrs. Dale (Mary Ellen) Kreutz, Sturgis, and Mrs. Jack (Paulette) Walker, Tucson; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and five sisters, Patricia Schmitz, and Frances Schmitz, both of Elgin, Kathleen Dawson, Coatsville, PA, Berniece DuBois, Billings, MT, and Theresa Welch, Bismarck.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Joe Gaugler.

Margaret D. Weaver

Margaret Dorothea Weaver, 93, Spearfish, died May 26, 2000, at the Belle Fourche Long-Term Health Care Center.

She was born Jan. 1, 1907, in Park, KS, to George and Catherine (Zitter) Schlick. The family moved to a homestead in Perkins County, near Bison, in 1910. She attended rural schools and graduated from Bison High School in 1925. She attended Northern State College in Aberdeen and taught school for several years at the Lone Tree School, Sunnyside School, Strool School and schools in the Meadow area. She taught all eight grades and sometimes would have as many as 40 students. She also assisted in the office of the Perkins County Courthouse.

On May 28, 1928, she married John Earl Weaver in Bison. They farmed and ranched in Perkins County near Bison until 1960. In 1967, they moved to Spearfish to make their home.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday School. She was a member of Fairview Chapter #166 Order of Eastern Star, Lone Tree Club, Presbyterian Ladies Circle and National Federation of Republican Women.

Survivors include two sons, Wendell Weaver, Spearfish, and Michael Weaver, Belle Fourche; one sister, Joyce Hafner, Bishop, CA; nine grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; one granddaughter, Cynthia Weaver; and one grandson, John Weaver.

A memorial has been established for the Fairview Chapter #166 Order of Eastern Star in Bison.

Funeral services were held on May 30, 2000, at Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish, with Rev. Wayland Holbrook officiating. At Margaret's request, her body was cremated following the service with inurnment taking place at a later date.

E.C. Coddington

E.C. Coddington, 92, Rapid City and formerly of Ashton, Ipswich and Lemmon, died June 2, 2000, in Rapid City.

His funeral was June 5 at the First Baptist Church in Rapid City. Burial was June 6 in Rose Hill cemetery in Parker with Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City in charge of arrangements.

Ellwood Clinton Coddington was born at Parker April 28, 1908, to William S. and Edna (Smith) Coddington. He grew up in Parker and attended public schools there. He graduated from Sioux Falls College and received his master of arts degree from the University of South Dakota.

He married Janice Rosenberger on June 30, 1930, in Nashua, IA. He spent his career as a high school teacher, principal and superintendent in Ashton, Alpena, Ipswich, Lemmon in the 1950s, Spearfish, the Douglas School System and the Shannon County Schools. He retired in 1973 and had lived in Rapid City since that time, most recently at Westhills Healthcare.

He was an active church member. He served as choir director in churches in Alpena, Redfield and Spearfish. He had served as church treasurer, adult Sunday School teacher and a member of the diaconate at the First Baptist Church in Rapid City. He had served as president of the South Dakota School Administrators, president and life member of the Beadle Club educational association and president of the South Dakota High School Music Association.

Survivors include his wife, a resident of Bella Vista in Rapid City; two sons, Dean Coddington, Littleton, CO, and Richard Coddington, Cloverdale, CA; one daughter, Mrs. Joel (Mary Ann) Severson, San Antonio; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

George T. Gabbert

George Thomas (Tom) Gabbert, 79, Mobridge, died June 7, 2000 at the Mobridge Regional Hospital. Memorial services were held Monday, June 12 at Spencer Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lemmon with Reverends Bill and Ethel Livingston officiating. Interment with military honors were at the Galloway cemetery, Meadow.

Pallbearers were Donald Wilken, Art Christman, Roy Hulm, Gerald Morris, Vern Schneider and George Aberle. Special music was provided by Mary Ellen Fried, vocalist and Dorothy Dayton, organist.

Tom was born Feb. 23, 1921, to George W. and Florence (Freeman) Gabbert at the family farm three miles west and south of Meadow, SD. He attended Meadow Central Grade School and graduated from the South Dakota Agricultural High School Program at Brookings, SD. He then enlisted in the U. S. Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he served as an aircraft mechanic. Following the war he returned to the family farm. He married Evelyn Hartman, Sept. 21, 1946 at Bison.

They farmed and ranched on his parents homestead and raised their family there. The family moved to Hobbs, NM in 1965 where he operated an A-Z Rental Center and then opened a machine shop. They returned to SD in 1971 and Tom resumed farming and also taught the metals unit for Northwest Area School for three years. In 1976 he opened West River Machine at Meadow in partnership with his son-in-law, Donald Borowski. Tom remained on the farm until his retirement in l984 when they moved to Mobridge.

Tom is survived by his wife, Evelyn, Mobridge; one daughter, Dorothy (Dottie) Borowski; three sons, John (Jack), Meadow, James (Jim), Calgary, Alberta, and Mark Gabbert of Aurora, CO; 5 grandchildren, one great grandson; one sister, Dale Heide, Portland, OR and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Garland, Lew, I.A. (Dutch), Jess and Dick; sisters, Dorothy and Nell Gabbert, Mary Gaaskjolen and Gladys Bergstrand.

Maurice J. Lynch

Funeral services for Maurice J. Lynch, 75, Broken Arrow, OK, were held Sept. 27, 2000, at Floral Haven cemetery in Broken Arrow.

Maurice John Lynch was born Nov. 27, 1924, at Bowman. He grew up on a farm in Adams County, ND, and worked on a large cattle ranch for one and a half years before joining military service in 1943. He served aboard a U.S. Coast Guard ship in the South Pacific during World War II and participated in the invasion of Okinawa.

He received an Honorable Discharge in 1946 and then worked highway construction. He drove 18-wheelers until 1950 when he leased a 3, 000 acre farm and ranch which he operated for the next 20 years. In 1970, he moved to Wyoming where he worked as a heavy equipment operator in uranium strip mines until 1983. Maurice moved to Oklahoma and continued to work at road construction until retirement.

He was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of American Legion Post #308 and the Knights of Columbus Council 6606 of Broken Arrow.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, Broken Arrow; six children from a former marriage, Mike Lynch, Broken Arrow, Sharon Fusick, Tulsa, OK, Jean Rucker, Springdale, AR, and Barbara Holbrook, Cindy Trotter and Mark Lynch, all of Denver; 14 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Kathleen Witt, Sioux Falls, and Margaret Clark, Riverton, WY; and three brothers, Denis Lynch, Keldron, Terry Lynch, Idabel, OK, and Pat Lynch, Riverton, WY.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Marcella Lynch, two brothers, Jim Lynch and George Lynch, and one sister, Shirley Lynch.

Milo Charles Ostby

Memorial services are pending for Milo Charles Ostby, 69, Marysville, WA. He died Sept. 13, 2000, after suffering a massive heart attack. He was cremated Sept. 15.

Milo Charles Ostby was born to Charles and Esther (Anderson) Ostby on Jan. 24, 1931, in Lemmon, where he grew up and attended school. He married Ardyce Svihovec on June 16, 1953. They lived and worked in and around the Lemmon, Belle Fourche and Hettinger areas until 1966, when they moved to Marysville.

He was employed at the Marysville Co-op until 1980, then went to work for the Marysville School District until his retirement in 1995.

Survivors include his wife, Ardyce, Marysville; two sons, Robert, Wichita, KS, and Ronald, Marysville; two sisters, Ramona Larson, Bucyrus, and Beverly Derschan, Lemmon; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
