E. Wilfred Salzsieder

Memorial services for E. Wilfred Salzsieder, 83, Toledo, WA, were held Sept. 21, 2000, in Toledo.

He was born Aug. 31, 1917, in Petrel, ND, to Emil and Elizabeth (Napton) Salzsieder. He attended school in Lemmon and lived in Aberdeen. In 1940, he married Inez Mahoney in Aitkin, MN.

After leaving South Dakota in the 1950s, they moved to Toledo, WA, where he worked for Boeing for seven years. They then returned to farming and raising cattle. They moved many times, finally settling on a spot near Toledo.

Wilfred was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Longview, and was active at St. Paul Lutheran, which was closer to their home. He was also a member of the Toledo Senior Center.

He died Sept. 14 at Longview, WA.

Survivors include his wife, Inez; three children, Karl, Wesley and Linda; four brothers, Elmer, Doyle, Wayne and Dean; one sister, Dorothy; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Wilfred was preceded in death by his brothers, Arnold and Gerald.

Robert Voigt

Funeral services for Robert Voigt, 80, Harvey, ND, were held Sept. 23, 2000, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He died Sept. 20 at the Trinity Nursing Home, Minot.

Robert Voigt was born July 22, 1920, in Lemmon to Henry and Gertrude (Johnson) Voigt. He grew up in Lemmon and graduated from Lemmon High School in 1940. During World War II he worked in the shipyards as a welder in Tacoma, WA. He also worked as a carpenter for one year prior to returning to Lemmon in 1944.

He married Lillian Rose Miaera on June 15, 1948, in McIntosh. He then went to work for the South Dakota Highway Department as a surveyor in the Lemmon and Huron, SD, areas. He also worked for the Bureau of Reclamation while living in South Dakota. They moved to Enderlin in 1954 and he began working for the Soo Line Railroad as a Civil Engineer. In 1973, they moved to Harvey and he retired in 1983.

He was a member of the St. Cecilia Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian, Harvey; three sons, Charles, Corpus Christi, TX, Robert, Bemidji, MN, and James, Northwood, ND; two daughters, Jean Voigt and Rose Mary Voigt, both of St. Paul, MN; one brother, Art, Minneapolis, MN; two sisters, Jeanette White, Milbank, SD, and Lila Knittel, Rapid City; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Scott, and one brother, Glendon Voigt.

Mary Lou Currens

Mary Lou Currens, 66, Gering, NE, died Nov. 21, 2000, after a long battle with cancer. Memorial services were held Nov. 25, 2000, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering with Rev. Gerald Harr officiating. Cremation followed the service. A private family inurnment was held at West Lawn cemetery in Gering.

Memorials have been established for the PEO Scholarship Fund, American Cancer Society and Prairie Haven Hospice.

Mary Lou Kirchoff was born in Lemmon on Oct. 9, 1934, to Lawrence and Gertrude (Eyer) Kirchoff. She attended school in Lemmon and graduated from Lemmon High school in 1953. She attended Presentation school of Nursing St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen. Upon completion of nurses training, she worked at the Kaiser Permanente Clinic in Portland, OR.

She married John F. Currens at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon on Sept. 14, 1959.

She was a member of Chapter EV PEO, Christ the King Catholic Church and Valley Voices.

Survivors include her husband, John, Gering; two daughters, Kathryn Currens, Fargo, and Patti Currens, Denver; two sons, David Currens, Paynesville, MN, and Michael Currens, Eagan, MN; one brother, Larry Kirchoff, Nipomo, CA; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Roy Frerking

Funeral services for Roy Emil Frerking, 92, Arizona, were held at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon on Nov. 27, 2000. Interment was at Green Hill cemetery, Lemmon. Casket bearers were Vaughn Berg, Darrold Frerking, Tom Frerking, Jared Leff, Randy Reister and John Renstrom.

Roy Frerking was born in Greenway, SD, on Nov. 26, 1907, to Magdalena (Hofer) Frerking and Herman Frerking Sr. The family moved to Lemmon in 1908 and then moved to a farm south of Lemmon in 1917. He attended school in the Lemmon area.

Roy married Beulah Louise Plocek of Lemmon on Oct. 15, 1931. The Frerkings lived nine miles southeast of Lemmon where he was engaged in farming and ranching operations for 40 years. He also did some trucking with Pete Sittner in his earlier years.

He served as Superintendent of Elections and Road Supervisor for Lincoln Township. He also served for many years on the school board for the Comstock School District and the Tax Equalization Board and participated in Farmers Union.

Beulah died on Dec. 10, 1968, and Roy sold his farm in 1971 and retired to Phoenix, AZ.

He married Edna Miller Fields on July 8, 1972, in Las Vegas. They purchased a home in Sun City, AZ, where they lived until three weeks prior to his death.

Roy was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 1995 and died on Nov. 20, 2000, at Immanuel Campus of Care in Peoria, AZ.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; two sisters, Ramona Ham and Martha Beckman; four children, Robert, Vernon, Marvelyn and Melvin; one step-daughter, Roberta Brim; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; eight of his siblings, Helena Brewer, Otto Frerking, Ella Gregerson, Clara Evans, Theresa Ham, Evelyn Frerking, Herman Frerking Jr., and May Evenson; and one step-son, Terry Fields.

Roy Magstadt

Funeral services for Roy Magstadt, 74, Mott, were held Nov. 28 at Zoar Congregational Church in Mott with Rev. Corey Warner officiating. Burial was on Nov. 29 at the North Dakota Veterans cemetery south of Mandan with full military honors afforded by the Taylor-Skartvedt American Legion Post of Mott. Honorary casket bearers were Moe Mosher, Lynn Dill, Jim Larson and Gilbert Mehrer. Active casket bearers were Lee Magstadt, Larry Magstadt, Kevin Magstadt, Kelly Friedt, Richard Schatz and Mick Wangsvick.

Roland (Roy) Chester Magstadt was born March 5, 1926, at Maple Leaf, SD, to DeWald and Christina (Stroh) Magstadt. He earned his education at Hebron Public School and then went to work for his father in the gas station. In 1944, he entered the Armed Forces. During World War II, he was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, and was discharged in 1946. He re-enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force for one year and was discharged in 1947.

After returning to North Dakota, Roy went to work for the railroad. He married Loretta Iszler on Nov. 16, 1963, at Hettinger. They made their home and raised their sons in Mott. Roy worked on road construction, for area farmers and for various Mott businesses. He was a custodian at the Hettinger County Court House until his retirement in 1993.

He was a member of the Taylor-Skartvedt American Legion Post in Mott and the "AM Vets" of Bismarck.

He died on Nov. 25, 2000, at West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Magstadt, Mott; four sons, DeWald Magstadt, Victorville, CA, Kenneth Magstadt, Bismarck, Bob Magstadt, Baxter, MN, and Randy Magstadt, Maple Grove, MN; three grandchildren; one brother, Arnold Magstadt, Hesperia, CA; and one sister, Lavina Ostrich, Renton, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Betruice Harshfield.

Cathleen Reisenauer

Mass of Christian Burial for Cathleen D. Reisenauer, 50, Hettinger, was held Nov. 27, 2000, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hettinger. Revs. Dennis Riss and Stephen M. Sherer and Deacon Joe Mattson officiated with burial in the Hettinger cemetery.

Special music was provided by Karen Kobilansky, organist. Casket bearers were Chad and Chris Reisenauer, John Nesland, Darren and Jared Schmaltz, Darron Schnell, Aaron Steckler and Lee Hauck.

Cathleen Denise Schmaltz was born Nov. 10, 1950, at Hettinger to Martin Peter and Marguerite Adell (Tatro) schmaltz. She grew up on a farm 12 miles northeast of Hettinger. She attended school in Hettinger and graduated from Hettinger High School in 1969. She attended Bismarck Junior College where she earned her Secretarial Degree.

Cathy married Charles M. Reisenauer on June 12, 1970, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hettinger. They resided in Dickinson from 1970-77 where she worked at Woolworth Department Store. In 1977, they moved to a farm near Hettinger where they farmed and ranched. In 1989, Cathy began working in Medical records at Hettinger Clinic and in 1995, they moved to Dickinson where she worked at Great Plains Clinic. They returned to Hettinger in 1999 and she worked at the Hettinger School in the Principal's Office.

She was diagnosed with cancer in July 2000 and died on Nov. 24 at West River Regional Medical Center.

Cathy did home interior decorating for many years and also worked part-time at Prairie Rose Floral in Hettinger.

Survivors include her husband, Charles, Hettinger; five sons, Scott and Justin, both of Rapid City, Brent, Ames, IA, and Joshua and Tyler, both of Hettinger; two grandsons; her mother, Marguerite Schmaltz, Hettinger; one brother, Michael Schmaltz, Hettinger; and three sisters, Anita Schmaltz, DeAnn Steckler and Cheryl Schmidt, all of Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her father in 1977.

Lyle Schmitz

Mass of Christian Burial for Ret. HMC Lyle S. Schmitz, 79, Elgin and formerly of Lemmon, was held on Dec. 2, 2000, at St. John's Catholic Church in New Leipzig with Rev. K.K. (Kuriakose Nediakala) officiating. Burial with full military honors was on Dec. 4 at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Special music was provided by Paula Rivinius. Casket bearers were Byrony Seifert, Kim (Revak) Robinson, Stacie Schmitz, Lyle Schmitz III, Jennifer (Schmitz) Gonzales, Patrick Gonzales, Troy Schmitz, Kati Schmitz and Patricia (Jacobs) Hannon. Serving as active casket bearers were Jerrod Seifert, Leigh Seifert, Quincy Baumeister, Tyler Baumeister, Mark Robinson, Christopher Robinson, Brian Hannon and Bernadette Schmitz.

Lyle Simon Schmitz was born Nov. 26, 1921, in the Pretty Rock Community of Grant County, ND, to John and Pauline (Reimann) Schmitz. He grew up in the Pretty Rock Community and attended Pretty Rock School. Lyle attended high school in Elgin and graduated in 1940.

He enlisted into the U.S. Navy in January 1941 and was stationed in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941, when Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese. He spent most of W.W.II in the South Pacific Islands. Following the war, he was stationed in China. While stationed there, he took leave and returned to North Dakota where he married Frances Gaugler at New Leipzig on Feb. 13, 1947. They lived in China for one year and then returned to the United States in October 1948.

Lyle retired as a Hospitalman Chief from the U.S. Navy on June 20, 1960. After retiring, they lived in Hidalgo, TX, where Lyle worked for the Civil Service as a Quarantine Inspector on the United States and Mexican Border. He retired from Civil Service in 1973 and they moved to Lemmon, continuing to spend winter months in the south. In August 1999, they moved to Elgin, where they have resided since.

Lyle died on Nov. 28, 2000, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck.

He was a member of George W. Snook American Legion #246 of Elgin.

Survivors include his wife, Frances, Elgin; three sons, Lyle Schmitz II, Franklinton, LA, Mathew Schmitz, Newberg, OR, and David Schmitz, Bryan, TX; three daughters, Mrs. David (Yvonne) Seifert, Hettinger, Mrs. Danny (Yvette) Jansen, Lemmon, and Mrs. Jason (Annette) Baumeister, Piedmont; 17 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one sister, Laurentina Goeres, Lemmon.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Raymond Schmitz; three infant grandsons; and one infant granddaughter.

Chris Zimmermann

Funeral services for Chris Zimmermann, 71, Hettinger, were held Nov. 27, 2000, at the Assembly of God Church in Hettinger. Revs. Garry Weems and Bob Untersher officiated with burial in the Hettinger cemetery.

Casket bearers were Rick, Scott, Ryan, Heather, Kevin and Tyler Zimmerman, and Kyle and Gregory Brown. All friends were considered honorary bearers.

Chris was born Aug. 11, 1929, on the family homestead in Adams County north of Hettinger to Manuel and Freda (Fliehmann) Zimmermann. In 1936, the family moved to a farm two miles north of Hettinger. He attended the Hettinger schools, graduating in 1947. Following his schooling, he worked with his family on the farm. In the spring of 1950, he purchased a place south of Hettinger. He married Hazel Delia Redlin on June 23, 1950, at New England, ND. After their marriage, they made their home and raised their family south of Hettinger.

Chris was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Hettinger and served on the church board. He served on the Hettinger Township Board and was a member of the Gideons International.

He died Nov. 21, 2000, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck.

Survivors include two sons, Ray Zimmermann, Bismarck, and Lauren Zimmermann, Hettinger; two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Karen) Brown and Kathy Tuley, both of Seattle, WA; three brothers, Elmer and Henry Zimmermann, both of Hettinger, and Rueben Zimmermann, Lynden, WA; one sister, Anita Mansfield, Minneapolis, MN; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Grace Hughes

Grace Hughes, 75, Miles City, MT, died Jan. 6, 2001, at her home.

She was born May 23, 1925, in Bristol, SD, to Guy G. and Hazel (Easterby) Dokter. They lived in Andover, SD, moving to Lemmon, where she attended schools and graduated from high school. Grace started her nurse's training at Presentation School of Nursing in 1946. She and Scott Hughes were married on Jan. 10, 1948, in Lemmon and made their home on the Hughes family ranch south of Miles City.

She began working at Holy Rosary Hospital where she worked off and on until 1975. She then worked at the friendship Villa Care Center until 1995 when she was forced to retire due to ill health.

She was named Montana Mother of the Year in 1995.

Survivors include her husband, Scott Hughes, Miles City; four sons, Nolan Hughes, Glasgow, MT, Curtis Hughes, Laurel, MT, Sid Hughes, Claremont, SD, and Wes Hughes, Arapahoe, NE; three daughters, Mrs. Loyal (Sharon) Kauffman, Glasgow, Mrs. Larry (Janice) Inches, Aberdeen, and Mrs. Les (Theresa) LaFranier, Lewistown, MT; 21 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Sidney Dokter; and three sisters, Esther Reasy, Aldyth Peterson and Sarah Eklo.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 8, 2001, at the Assembly of God Church in Miles City. Interment was in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City.

Memorials can be made to the Miles City Gideons, Box 1336, Miles City, MT 59301 or to the charity of one's choice.
