Rose Anna Ericsson

Funeral services for Rose Anna Ericsson, 81, lifelong Thunder Hawk and Lemmon resident, were held Aug. 8, 2001, at the Prairie Hills Church of God in Lemmon with Rev. Arlen Swanson officiating and interment was in Greenhill cemetery.

Casket bearers were Tracy Wolf, Somar Austin, David Ericsson, Jr., Grant Austin, Andy Mitkos, Dan Yaich, Todd Wolf and Eric Ericsson with the Staff of Five Counties Nursing Home and all friends considered honorary bearers. Pat Peterson, organist, Somar Austin and Darrel Klitzke, vocalists provided special music. Mrs. Ericsson died Aug. 5, 2001 at West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.

Rose Anna Rotter Ericsson was born Oct. 5, 1919 at Thunder Hawk, SD in the railroad section home to Joseph and Hannah (Vodnik) Rotter. Her father was the section foreman for the C.M.St.P. & P. Railroad. She grew up and received her education in Thunder Hawk and rural Morristown, SD. She worked for a time as a housekeeper for area families and in the early 1940's moved to Seattle, WA, to work for Boeing as a riveter during World War II. There she met Eugene Ericsson, also a Thunder Hawk native and they were married on May 30, 1942 at Spokane, WA. They began their life together on a farm near Tekoa, WA and in 1945 returned to the north Thunder Hawk area to farm. In 1947, they moved into Thunder Hawk, living there until retiring and moving to Lemmon. In Thunder Hawk, she served as the Postal Clerk for many years until the Post Office closed and after moving to Lemmon she baked for a local restaurant. Following an auto accident, she was unable to resume working.

Rose suffered a stroke in February of 1997 and on June 1, 1997 entered Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon, where she has resided since. Rose loved to bake, spoil her grandchildren and entertain family and friends. She was a member of the Church of God and Friendship Circle of its Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school especially to the small children and dearly loved her Lord.

Survivors include her husband Gene Ericsson, Lemmon, one son, David Ericsson, Danville, IN, two daughters, Vickie Kane, Thunder Hawk, SD and VeRene Potter, Lemmon, 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, one brother; Joe Rotter, Craig, CO and one sister, Mary Goodmanson, Lemmon.

Allen Walter

Funeral services for Allen Walter, 83, Lemmon, were held Oct. 12, 2001, at the Lemmon Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Johnson officiating and internment in Greenhill cemetery in Lemmon. Casketbearers were Dale Kvale, Tim Kvale, Tim Holdahl, Ryan Goodmanson, Neil Johnson and Loren Johnson.

Allen J. Walter was born September 27, 1918 to Ransom H. and Edna J. (Cunningham) Walter on a farm near Conde, SD. At the age of six he moved with his parents to North Lemmon Township, Adams County, ND. He attended the North Lemmon School and graduated from Lemmon High School in 1936.

Allen worked on farms and ranches in Minnesota and eastern South Dakota. In 1941 he married Inez Taylor in Ipswich, SD. In 1947, they moved to Garrison Dam, ND where Allen worked on construction of the dam. In 1949 he returned to the Lemmon area where he worked in construction and drove semitrucks for Barber Transportation for many years. In 1973 he married Dorothy (Skooglund) Goodman. While Allen was still in good health they enjoyed traveling during the winter for ten years, meeting and making many new friends. Allen worked for the Green Thumb program in Lemmon for several years until his health failed. He enjoyed going out for coffee every day and visiting with his friends.

Allen was a longtime faithful member of the Lemmon Baptist Church, having served as a Deacon and volunteering his time doing the maintenance on the church building.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, Lemmon; three daughters, Carol Holdhusen and Barbara Gillick, Ipswich, SD and Gail Ledward, Mesa, AZ; two sons, Lowell Walter, Aberdeen, SD and Barton Walter, Phoenix, AZ; two stepdaughters, Ellen Cloninger, Middletown, OH and Beverly Lewis, Portland, OR; one stepson, David Goodman, Aberdeen, SD; five sisters, Gladys Baldwin, Spokane, WA, Belle Kvale, Lemmon, Phyllis Riddle, Lemmon, Ella Johnson, Groton, SD and Clara Leonard, Walla Walla, WA, and 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, two brothers and one sister.

Martha Beckman

Funeral services for Martha Beckman, 80, Lemmon, were Oct. 12, 2001 at the Prince Of Peace Chapel of the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon. Pastor Harold Watrous officiated with burial in Greenhill cemetery. Casketbearers were Robert, Tom, and Darrold Frerking; Don Leff, Jack Clark, and Vaughn Berg.

Martha Violet Beckman was born March 15, 1921 at Lemmon, SD to Herman and Magdalena (Hofer) Frerking. She grew up east of Shadehill and attended a local country school. Her mother died in August 1930 and she helped her father on the farm until moving to Lemmon in the late 1930's. For many years she worked in local restaurants and hotels in Lemmon until her health began to fail. She lived in her own home until August 2000 when she entered Five Counties Nursing Home.

Martha died at Five Counties Nursing Home Oct. 9, 2001.

Surviving are one sister, Ramona Ham, Lemmon, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edward Beckman; 3 brothers, Otto, Roy, and Herman Frerking, and 6 sisters, Helena Frerking, Ellen Gregerson, Clara Evans, Theresa Ham, Evylin Frerking in infancy, and Mae Evenson.

Martha M. Kirschman

Funeral services for Martha M. Kirschman, 84, were held Oct. 8, 2001, at the Assembly of God Church in Hettinger with Rev. James Murphy officiating. Burial was in TeePee Butte cemetery, southwest of Regent.

Martha M. Kirschman was born Oct. 13, 1916, the eldest daughter of John and Katherine (Wolf) Zenker in the Teepee Butte Township near Havelock, ND. She attended grade school in that area and worked in the community as a hired girl throughout her teen years. Martha married John Kirschman March 10, 1937. They made their home on the John Kirschman homestead by farming 16 miles southwest of Regent, until 1975 when they moved to Hettinger and continued to farm. Martha's desire in life was to portray Jesus in all she did whether it was in teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, homemaking, gardening, making jelly, doing crafts and creating quilts or just being a helping hand to her neighbors.

Survivors include three daughters, Velma Jean Schauer, Dupree; Rita Knutson, Billings, MT, and Shirley White, Paola, KS; one brother, Wilmer Zenker, Bismarck; three sisters, Emma Nelson, Bowman, Adeline Kirschmann, Regent, and Bertha Christensen, New England; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, John, her mother and father, brothers Edmund, Arthur and John, one grandchild, Kara Angel, and one great-grandchild, Jamie Jean.

Bertha Long

Funeral services for Bertha A. Long, 89, Lemmon, SD, were Nov. 19, 2001, at the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Lemmon with Pastor Tom Penning officiating.

Casketbearers were Wayne Volk, Cary Volk, John Buer, Tracy Buer, Todd Buer and Clarence Volz.

Bertha lived 89 years of joy and sorrow. She died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, N.D.

Bertha A. Long was born April 26, 1912, on her parent's homestead, rural Shadehill, S.D., the daughter of Peder Johnson and Tilda Bertine (Anderson) Buer. She attended Hooker school. One of her duties at home was to herd sheep and the hours spent outside with nature inspired her to write stories and poems. She also played the guitar and piano for house dances.

Bertha married Virgil Anderson and they became the parents of two children, Larry and Joyce. Virgil became ill with Huntington's Disease and because this was an inherited weakness, their son Larry and their grandson Craig all succumbed to the disease. Bertha married Lloyd Long on Sept. 13, 1963 at Buffalo, S.D. They lived on his farm and later moved into Lemmon.

Lloyd and Bertha were avid bowlers and have several beautiful trophies. Bertha enjoyed painting and the pictures in their home depict her love of nature. She was also known for baking lefsa at Christmas time.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd, Lemmon; one daughter, Joyce Volk, Hettinger, N.D.; one sister, Ruby Jensen, Bison, S.D.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Virgil, one son, Larry Anderson, one grandson, Craig Anderson, three brothers, Harold, Lloyd and Julian and one sister, Myrtle Thompson.

Paul Gordon

Funeral services for Paul Gordon, 88, Hettinger, N.D., were held Nov. 23, 2001 at the Hettinger Baptist Church in Hettinger with Pastor Tom Caldwell officiating and burial in the Hetttinger cemetery.

Mr. Gordon died Nov. 18, 2001 at the Hillcrest Care Center in Hettinger.

Paul Gordon was born Jan. 5, 1913 at Wilder, IN, the son of Oscar and Lerid (Braddock) Gordon. He attended grade school at White Butte, SD, and graduated from Haynes High School, Haynes, ND. After high school he worked at home and for various neighbors before going into the C.C.C. Following that he returned to the home farm. For a time he worked on the west coast at Wenatchee, WA, again returning to the home place where he raised registered Galloway cattle. He then turned to the hog business which he followed until he entered the assisted living facility and later entered the nursing home. Paul never married .

Survivors include two sisters, Opal Stomprud, Faith, and Ruby Cook, Fairview, OR, plus numerous other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Glen, and one sister, Rosa Stomprud.

William F. "Bill" Peck

William F. Peck, 69, Reeder, ND, died Nov. 19, 2001 at West River Regional Medical Center, Hettinger, ND. Funeral services were Nov. 23, 2001 at First Presbyterian Church, Sturgis, SD. Rev. Frank McKeehan officiated with interment in Bear Butte cemetery.

William Peck was born May 25, 1933 at Faith, SD, to William and Marie Peck. His early years were spent in Meade County. Following the death of his mother, he lived at Boys Town, NE, for a time. He later returned to the Sturgis area. Bill was married to Doris Kuykendall in 1952 in Sturgis.

Most of his life, Bill worked in some type of construction. He was a skilled carpenter and loved working with his hands. He also loved hunt-ing, fishing and camping. He lived life to its fullest.

Survivors include four daughters, Darla Day, Huntley, MT, Debbie Frank, Butte, MT, Diana Stein, Billings, MT, and Donna Hunter, Lake Zurich, IL; two brothers, Doug and Bob Hills, Summit, SD; four sisters, Molly Albretsen, San Mateo, CA, Dean Hansen, Willows, CA, Jenny King, Fremont, CA and Julie Pinter, Webster, SD; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters, and one daughter, Brenda Peck.

Hilka Poppinga

Services were to be held Wednesday, Dec. 14 at First Baptist Church in Chancellor for Hilka Poppinga who died Dec. 10, 2005.

She attained the age of 90 years, 10 months and 25 days.

Harriet Dreesman

Harriet Dreesman, 82, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005 at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15 at Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home, Parker with burial in Rosehill cemetery, Parker.

Jean Krick
1931-2012

Jean Krick, 81, of Miller, S.D. died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society of Miller.

By her request, private family graveside rites will be held.

Jean Louise was born on November 16, 1931 at home north of St. Lawrence, S.D., to Casey and Ethel (Williams) Schultz. She attended school through the eighth grade and later received her GED.

Robert A. Sandstedt
1932-2012

Robert (Bob) Alan Sandstedt, 80, of Highmore, S.D., died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 as a result of post-polio syndrome and complications, at the Highmore Health, Highmore, S.D.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Luze Funeral Home, Highmore with the Rev. Canon David Hussey officiating. Burial will follow at Morningside cemetery, Ree Heights.

Gerald Lehnherr
1931-2012

Gerald “Jerry” Lehnherr, 81, of Rochester, Minn., died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012 at Golden Living Center Rochester East.

The memorial mass was held Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Macken Funeral Home River Park Chapel. Burial was in Calvary cemetery in Rochester.

Jerry was born July 10, 1931 in Minneapolis, Minn. to John and Lenore Lehnherr. He graduated from Lourdes High School in 1949.

Alfrieda R. Schock
1918-2012

The funeral service for Alfrieda R. Schock, 94, of Aberdeen, S.D., was Monday, Dec. 3, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Deb Grismer officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Alfrieda died November 27, 2012 at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.

Alfrieda R. Konrad was born on October 12, 1918 to Jacob and Magdelina Konrad in Kulm, N.D. This is the area where she grew up and attended school, graduating from the eighth grade.

Sister Del Rey Thieman
1935-2012

Sister Del Rey Thieman, 77, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died November 28, 2012, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, S.D.

The Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Dec. 3, in Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Presentation Convent, Aberdeen. Celebrants were

Reverend John Lantsberger and Reverend David Krogman. Burial was at Sacred Heart cemetery with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
