Thomas E. Steers

Thomas E. Steers, 81, of Miller, SD passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller, surrounded by his loving family. Visitation was Tuesday, January 8th at Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Funeral Service was Wednesday, January 9th at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller with the Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial was at G.A.R. cemetery in Miller.

Tom was born on March 16, 1926 in Detroit, MI. He was the only beloved child of Ben T. and Irene (Granger) Steers. He attended school in Detroit until the age of 11, and then attended a one-room country school in Northville, MI. He graduated from high school at Detroit Country Day in 1944, and then attended VMI (Virginia Military Institute) until he was drafted into the Army where he served in the European Theatre in World War II. Upon his discharge, he attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he met and married the love of his life, Shirley O’Brien, on September 16, 1946.

In 1952, Tom and Shirley moved from Detroit to rural Miller, SD where he spent his life raising their family of six children and cattle ranching in the Ree Hills area. Over the years he served on the Rockdale township and school boards, and was a long time member of the Miller First Presbyterian Church, serving various terms as an elder, trustee, and usher. Due to declining mobility, he spent the last four years living at Miller Good Samaritan Center where he received warm and loving care.

Tom’s greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren and experiencing the many activities they participated in through the years. He was a man of great strength, integrity and loyalty. He made friends easily and treasured the many friendships he made along the way. He was very proud of his family, and his humor, good nature, and gentle, loving ways will be cherished always.

Tom is survived by Shirley, his loving wife of 61 years, and his adoring children: Susan Andersen, Sioux Falls, Tom Steers, Burnsville, MN, Nancy Steers, Sioux Falls, Todd Steers, Huntington Beach, CA, Bob (Diane) Steers, Miller, and Ben (Rebecca) Steers, Fort Worth, TX; grandchildren: Kristin (Brian), Aimie, Megan (and her mother, Pam), Travis, Garett, Emma, Evan, Ivy, Chance, Connor, Sara, and Theron; and great-grandchildren: Caleb, Alex, Madelynn, Elise and Marissa; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, parents in-law, and two brothers in-law, Charles and John O’Brien and their wives.

The family kindly requests that memorials be directed to any of the following organizations: First Presbyterian Church of Miller Building Fund, National Kidney Foundation, or the American Lung Association.

Dale D. Wagner

Dale Dennis “Rude Dog” Wagner, 44, of Miller, died Wednesday, January 2nd as the result of an avalanche while snowmobiling in Laramie Wyoming. Visitation was at the St. Lawrence Community Church on Monday, January 7th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Funeral service was Tuesday, January 8th at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Lawrence Church with Rev. Brian Jones and John Rasko officiating. Burial was at the G.A.R. cemetery in Miller. Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence was entrusted with Dale's arrangements.

Dale Dennis Wagner was born June 13, 1963 at Huron, SD to Clarence and Mable (Haeffner) Wagner. He attended school in St. Lawrence and Miller graduating from Miller High School in 1981. Dale attended Lake-Area Vo-Tech receiving a degree in Building Trades graduating in 1983. After graduation he worked in Rapid City for a short time before returning to the family farm.

On October 17, 1992 he married Roberta “Bobi” Bussell in Miller, SD. Dale farmed with his family all over Hand County until the time of his death.

Dale enjoyed and lived life to the fullest. His greatest love was for his family. Dale’s obvious love of his life shows thru his three beautiful children, Lyndsay Kae, Rhett Lynn, and Camrynn Clare. His one and only love was Bobi, his wife of 15 short years.

Working on the family farm everyday was one of the simple pleasures Dale enjoyed. His snowmobiling and racing friends have such wonderful life long memories.

Survivors include his wife Bobi and his three children Lyndsay Kae, Rhett Lynn, and Camrynn Clare all of Miller; parents, Clarence and Mable Wagner of Miller; brothers and sister, Rod (Mary) Wagner of Miller, Lynette (Bob) Moser of Rapid City, Gary (Julie) Wagner of Miller; mother and father in law Dale and Kae Bussell of Tucson, AZ; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles and many special friends; he is also survived by his dog Peaches.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Robert and Hulda Wagner and Jake and Carrie Haeffner.

Glenn W. Walberg Sr.

Glenn W. Walberg Sr., 86, of Miller, formerly of Aberdeen, died Monday, January 14 at the Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller. Prayer service was at the St. Lawrence Community Church on Thursday, January 17 at 7:00 p.m. The family was present from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Memorial service was Friday, January 18 at the St. Lawrence Community Church at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. John Rasko officiating. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence.

Glenn Warren Walberg was born July 17, 1921 at Mina, SD to Peter and Mary (Babcock) Walberg. He grew up on the family farm attending country school near Mina. In 1939 he graduated from Mina High School. Glenn attended Northern College in Aberdeen until his father’s death, when he returned home to operate the family farm.

On June 11, 1949 he married Vera Light at the First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen. To this union two children were born, Glenn Jr. and Shirley. In 1954 Glenn started Walberg Construction. He built many spec houses, remodeled homes and built numerous homes for his family. After retiring Glen and Vera moved to their home on Pickeral Lake to spend their summers. They spent their winters going south, finally settling in Yuma, AZ. In May of 2003 they moved to Miller to be closer to family.

Survivors include his wife Vera of Miller; one son Glenn (Sue) Walberg Jr. of Windsor, CO; one daughter Shirley (Ernie) Stirling of Miller; 5 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Carol Kluthe

On April 16, 2008, Carol Arlene Kluthe, surrounded by her family, was called home by God from the Hand County Memorial Hospital. Visitation was Friday April 18 at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Funeral service was at 10:00 a.m. Saturday April 19 at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial was at Ashton cemetery, Ashton, SD.

“Christmas Carol” was born on December 25, 1924, to Charles and Martha Kopplin on a farm near Tulare. Carol attended and graduated from Redfield High School in 1942. Upon graduation, she worked at Parsons Hardware, Ben Franklin and eventually as a parts person for an automobile dealership in Redfield where she met Garth Zeigler. They married on December 31, 1948. Together, they operated Zeigler Motor Company in Miller until his death on June 17, 1970. Unto this marriage, five children were born. Linda (Gregg) Holtz, Belle Fourche; Steve (Linda) Zeigler, Miller; Jeanie Zeigler, Austin, Texas; Judy (Ken) Grunewaldt, Pierre and Ron (Sue) Zeigler, Rochester, Minnesota.

On November 14, 1970, Carol married Les Winsell. Together, they operated the Hi-Lite Bar and Steakhouse. Les passed away in November of 1980. In February, 1985, Carol married Kenny Speirs. Kenny passed away in May of 1988. Carol married Ed Kluthe January 26, 1996.

Carol had a zest for life. Always one ready for a new adventure, Carol spent her life filled with fun, including her hobbies of golfing, traveling, singing, walking and playing cards. She was very close to her children, not only as a mother, but as their best friend.

Carol was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Church Choir and United Presbyterian Women for 60 years. She served her community including serving as a Girl Scout leader for many years and organizer of the Junior Golf League. Carol was very active in the Miller Country Club, was a past women’s club champion and a member of the Hole-in-One Club from a shot in 1984. Spending time at the Senior Citizen’s Center also brought Carol great pleasure.

Carol is survived by Ed Kluthe; her children; her step-son, Richard (Judy) Zeigler, Palm Desert, CA; 12 grandchildren – Perry Zeigler, Angela Wolter, Amber Jones, Garrett Holtz, Heath Zeigler, Jeff Zeigler, Matthew (Todd) Zeigler, Carmen Swartz, Kim Grunewaldt, Brett Grunewaldt, Jared Zeigler, Stephanie Zeigler; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Sylvia Steinhauser, Redfield; one sister-in-law, Harriett Kopplin, Miller; many special nieces and nephews; special family friend Hattie Cherland, Miller; and 11 step-children and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands, two brothers, Milton and Lester, and two sisters, Mildred and Vera.

Patricia "Patty" Jean Werdel

Patricia “Patty” Jean Werdel, 80 of Ree Heights, SD died Sunday Sept. 21, 2008 at the Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller under the watch of her loving family. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 23rd at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Miller from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 pm. Rosary Service. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 24th at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Stephan, SD. Interment will be at the Cedar cemetery, rural Ree Heights.

Patty was born July 19, 1928 to J.Q. and Gladys (Finnerty) Robbins in Redfield, SD. She was the oldest of four children. As a child, Patty’s family moved to Chamberlain where she spent her elementary years. As a high school girl she went to Mount Marty High School in Yankton. It was there that she met “The Werdel Girls” who introduced her to their brother and her future husband, Pete Werdel.

Patty and Pete married on June 27th, 1946 in Pierre, SD. They moved to the family farm where they started their life together raising 12 children. Patty was active in the Catholic Church where she served as president of the altar society and religious educator for many years. She was a member of the Cedar Extension Club. Patty was an avid reader and artist.

Grandma had a gift of making everyone she met feel special. This ranged from a daily wave to “the boys” in the tractors from her window by the table, a call to her girls, a hug for the kids, a card for every birthday or a snuggle for every new baby. Grandma had time for us all and her face lit up when her family and friends came in. She made her home warm and welcoming, bright and cozy, smelling of hot coffee and cookies with always room for one more. She was as happy to see the rebellious teenager as the baby.

She put her many health problems aside and chose to smile and focus on how someone else was. She chose to be the calm and happy one, the one with her arms wide open, waiting for just one more to come thru her door.

Survivors include: Pete, her husband of 62 years; twelve children and their spouses; Laura (Jerry) Heinz of St. Paul, MN, John (Lex) Werdel of Ree Heights, Ray (Lynn) Werdel of Ree Heights, Lee (Jeanne) Werdel of Clark, SD, Mary (Rich) Stuhlmacher of Malta, MT, Bill (Peggy) Werdel of Hurley, SD, Kay (Randy) Shepherd of Conrad, MT, Ed (Patti) Werdel of Ree Heights, Carol (Mark) Steichen of Alpena, SD, Gail (Todd) Christensen of Vermillion, SD, Jean (Tom) Hamiel, St. Lawrence, and Judy (Thom) Haley of Renner, SD; 49 grandchildren and 58 great grandchildren; two brothers Jack (Pat) Robbins and Joe (Carol) Robbins. Sister and brother-in-laws; Sister Marie Helene Werdel, Theresa Summerfon, Annabell Clausen, Leona (Rick) Yanta, and Art Schuster.

She was preceded in death by her parents J.Q. and Gladys Robbins; mother and father-in-law Elizabeth and John Werdel; one brother, Jim; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Loretta and Jr. Suhn, Marita Schuster, Bob Ricklick, Al Summerton, and Bob Clausen; one grandchild Francis Peter Werdel.

Buster Deuter

Francis “Buster” Deuter, 87, of Ree Heights, died Tuesday, July 22 at Littleton, Co. Funeral Service were 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 26 at the Ree Heights Auditorium. The prayer service was 7:00 p.m. at the Ree Heights Community Church on Friday, July 25. Burial was at the Morningside cemetery at Ree Heights. Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence was entrusted with Buster’s funeral arrangements.

Francis Franklin “Buster” Deuter was born August 27, 1920 at the family home in Campbell Township, Hand County, SD, to Benjamin Franklin and Margaret Myrtle (Wallace) Deuter.

With the exception of a few of his childhood years, which were spent in Ohio, he spent all of his life in Hand County, most of it in Ree Heights. He attended school in Alden Township a few years, and then attended school in Ree Heights, graduating in 1940. He began working for Roger Paine soon after high school.

He married Lois Paine, February 22, 1947, in Miller, SD. They made their home in Ree Heights all their married years. The two of them ranched together for 56 years until Lois’s death in 2003. They spent many years digging arrowheads from the buffalo kill site on their ranch and sharing their artifacts through tours of their museum and kill site. He liked picking the first crocus in the spring, spending time picking raspberries and hunting deer at their cabin in the Black Hills.

Buster had a real passion for sports. Not only did he enjoy participating in various sports but he also spent countless hours developing the skills of and encouraging the youth of the area. He coached Jr. Jr. baseball for several years, as well as playing baseball himself on several local teams. In later years, he coached the Ree Heights girls’ softball team and was inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame in 1987. He also coached Ree Heights' grade school basketball as a volunteer. Buster was an avid hunter and trapper all his life and was a Hunter Safety Course instructor for 32 years. Buster drove the Ree Heights school bus routes for many years and touched the lives of many young people.

Buster was a charter member of the Ree Heights Fire Department and served as Fire Chief for 32 years. He also served many years on the town board, was a director of the Morningside cemetery Association, and a member of the Ree Heights Church.

He is survived by six children: Dan (Ellie) Deuter, of Montrose, CO; Terry (Kim) Deuter, of Kadoka, SD; Casey (Jan) Deuter, of Ree Heights, SD; Sally (Joe) Watkins, of Hartford, SD; Jim (Pati) Deuter, of Ree Heights, SD; and Susan (Randy) Knippling, of Gann Valley, SD; great nephew Rocky (Skyla) Nicholas, of Pierre, SD, seventeen grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, five step grandchildren, and ten step great grandchildren; six sisters: Helen McKay, Orient, SD; Bethene (Jerry) Ray, Chardin, OH; Maxine Deuter, Miller, SD; Betty Deuter, Miller, SD; Evelyn (Dean) Hyde, Pierre, SD; Dot (Allen) Hansen, Ree Heights, SD; two brothers: Dick (Violet) Deuter, Rapid City, SD; and Johnny (Pat) Deuter, Humboldt, SD. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, his parents, a stillborn son, his brother Donald, sister-in-law Ethel, brother-in-law George McKay and his “Killer” dog.

Olga Olson

Olga Magdalena Olson, 84, of Aberdeen, died Saturday, July 19th, 2008 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen. Funeral service was 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 22nd at Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller. Visitation was hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Interment was at G.A.R. cemetery in Miller. Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence was entrusted with Olga’s arrangements.

Olga Magdalena Albrecht was born September 23, 1923 in Mound City, South Dakota to Phillip and Christina (Schaffer) Albrecht. She attended school in Selby.

In 1943 Olga married Casper Wortman at Selby, South Dakota. In 1950 they moved to Willow Lake. They bought and ran a pool hall for 13 years. Olga also helped paint buildings and dip sheep. Olga was a hard worker and always worked side by side with her husband. They enjoyed going to dances.

In 1968 they moved to Miller. Olga worked at the Prairie Good Samaritan Center for several years. After her husband’s death in 1982 Olga moved to Aberdeen.

In 1984 Olga married John Olson and they resided in Aberdeen. They loved to garden and take walks together. Due to health issues Olga went to Manor Care Heath Center in 2003 and resided there until her death. Olga was a member of the VFW and the Royal Neighbors of America.

Happy to have shared her life include her husband John Olson of Aberdeen; daughter JoAnn Hoffman of Aberdeen and her friend Tillman Hofer of Carpenter, SD; son Dan (Marge) Wortman of Mitchell; 6 grandchildren Julie (Doug) Larson of Aberdeen, Jill (Ryan) Mohr of Aberdeen, Jay Hoffman of Black Hawk, SD, Shawn (Kate) Behrens of Volga, SD, Darrell (April) Behrens of Brookings, SD, Angie Dennis of Florence, SD; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Edna Hochhalter of Miller.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Casper, 4 sisters, 4 brothers and 1 son-in-law.

Craig Wharton

Craig Lewis Wharton, 66, died Sunday May 4, 2008 at his home in Miller, SD.

Visitation was Thursday, May 8th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service all at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. Funeral service was 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 9th at the First United Methodist Church in Miller with Rev. David Andrews officiating. Burial was at the G.A.R cemetery in Miller. Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence was entrusted with Craig’s arrangements.

Craig Lewis Wharton was born April 22, 1942 in Rapid City, SD. At the age of 4 months Samuel L. and Corrine B. (Padmore) Wharton chose him to be their adopted son. Craig grew up in Highmore, SD graduating with the class of 1960.

Craig married Ruby Heinrich on November 22, 1962 at Isabel, SD.

Craig had many talents and interests. He was a skilled electrician, welder, and mechanic. Craig loved music, car races, and helping people whenever needed. He loved and was proud of his children and grandsons.

He is survived by his children Valerie (Tim) Zipp of Denver, CO, Son Chad (LaDonna) of Lisbon, ND, and Grandsons Kristopher, Jaren, and Jett. A brother Daniel (Virginia) Wharton of Golden, CO a niece and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dennis Yost

Dennis Eugene Yost was born on May 26, 1954 to Edwin and Norma (Thompson) Yost. He was their first born son. Dennis and his brother Terry always kept life interesting for their parents. They would climb windmills, give snake presents to their mom, or go hunting in the trees. Dennis drove race car from 1970 to 1985. He graduated from Miller High School in 1972. He died peacefully at home on June 3, 2008.

On September 23, 1978, Dennis married the love of his life, Denise Purrington. They had four daughters and two sons: Amanda, Deidra, Serena, Sabrina, Devron, and Caleb. Dennis was a wonderful father to his children. He taught them to hunt, fish, fix cars, drive, and live life to the fullest. He would not let his children drive until they could change their own tire. He made sure his family was taken care of and knew he loved them. He was proud of them all. Dennis was the father in law to Jeffrey, Andy, Joe and Lee. He was the grandfather to Denae, Cassandra, VonnaGail, Weston, Wyatt, Kailena, Aleah, Stephenie, and Terrell. He loved his grandchildren with his whole heart. Whenever he would see them his eyes would sparkle with joy and love for them even after he was sick.

Dennis and Denise lived in Hand County for most of their marriage, only living south in Buffalo County for a few years. They moved to Miller in 1999 and moved to their current home in 2004.

Dennis had farmed his whole life. He was working for John and A John Boomsma at the time of his illness. He loved working for them and thought of them as family. Dennis loved racing and could be found at the Miller Speedway watching his sons and nephew race.

Dennis will always be remembered for his love of all people, his bushy beard, and his strong work habit. His children and grandchildren will never forget his love for them and how proud of each of them he was.

He was preceded in death by his grandchildren: Alex, Hailei, Baby Yost, and Baby S. Yost; his brother, Terry, his father in law, James.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Denise, his children: Amanda (Jeff) Geraets of Dell Rapids, Deidra (Andy) Schlechter of Polo, Serena (Joe Campbell) Yost of Dell Rapids, Sabrina Kolda of Dell Rapids, Devron Yost of Gettysburg, Caleb Yost of Miller, Lee Kolda of Polo; his grandchildren: Denae, VonnaGail, Aleah, and Terrell Schlechter, Cassandra, Weston, Wyatt, and Stephenie Geraets, Kailena Campbell, his parents, Edwin & Norma Yost of Miller, his in laws, Darrell & Elaine Peterman of Miller, his sister and brother in laws: Allen & Dawn Joy of Miller, Doug & Janice Purrington of Miller, Cindy Selting of Sioux Falls, Brian Peterman of Britton, Bradley Peterman of Aberdeen; his nieces and nephews: Jalynn & Jacob Joy, Kara (Dan) Heffner, Jon (Deidra) Deuter, Nichole Yost, Ryan (Cole Schnathorst) Yost, Trenton Selting; his great nieces & nephews: Hayden & Gavin Yost, Grady & Haley Heffner, Bailey, Nicole, & Mia Deuter, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

The funeral was 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 6th at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Belzer officiating. Visitation was Thursday June 5 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence.

Kenneth "Kenny" Barrows

Kenneth "Kenny" Barrows, 68, of Faulkton, passed away Sunday, October 12 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital in Aberdeen, SD. Funeral service is Friday, October 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church at 1011 Saint John, Faulkton, SD 57479. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayers all at the United Methodist Church in Faulkton. Burial will follow at the Faulkton cemetery. Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence has been entrusted with Kenneth’s arrangements.

Kenny was born in Faulkton on February 12, 1940 to Rev. Douglas and Katherine (Sisson) Barrows. He graduated Faulkton High School in 1958. Then in 1963 Kenny graduated on the Dean’s list from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science/Range Management degree. While in college he belonged to Gamma Sigma Delta fraternity. In 1987 he furthered his education and received an Automotive-Diesel Masters Course diploma.

On November 28, 1963 Kenny married Donna Rae Joyce and they made their home on a farm near Faulkton.

For a short period, Kenny worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Montana. In 1963, Kenny returned to Faulkton where he began farming and ranching for Leonard Lenhoff farms. In 1980, he began farming and ranching on his own until his MS forced him to retire.

Kenny enjoyed many things. He was naturally musically talented. Many nights when his family was young he would play the steel guitar and sing Johnny Cash songs. He had an exceptional love for the outdoors. Hunting and gardening were two of his favorites. He also enjoyed guns and reloading. His family and friends also saw his unconditional love for all animals.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Rae; son, Tim Barrows of Vermillion, SD; two daughters, Joyce Barrows of Waconia, MN and Julie (Greg) Fischbach of Warner, SD; three grandchildren, Cheyenne Davis of Waconia, MN, Ashley and Keeley Fischbach of Warner, SD; two brothers, William (Mary) Barrows of Clarksville, TN, Gordon (Margie) Barrows of Rochester, MN; one sister, Clara Klettke of Kulm, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Troy Barrows and one brother-in-law Lloyd Klettke.

Pallbearers will be Roger Melius, Harold Giest, Bernie Vogel, Earl Knowles, Brad Joyce and Josh Joyce.
