Neil Harvey

Neil Harvey, 57, of Miller, died Sunday, October 19, 2008 at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 24 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller, with the Father Terry Anderson officiating. The family will be present at Rembold Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and there will be a 7:00 p.m. prayer service with Rev. Brian Jones officiating.

Neil Eugene Harvey was born on January 31, 1951 in Miller, South Dakota. Neil grew up on a farm in south Hand County, and attended Spring Lake country school. He later graduated from Miller High School in 1969. After high school, Neil attended the University of South Dakota, and later completed his education at Lake Area Technical Institute with an Associate Degree.

After attending USD, Neil held various jobs including working in the Wyoming oil fields, managing a custom combining crew, and building roads for Sivertsen Construction. Neil farmed with his father-in-law Louis Donlin for twenty years, and spent the last number of years farming for Howard Peterka.

Neil married Kathleen Donlin in June of 1975. They lived in Pearl Township where they raised three sons.

Neil’s loves included working with cattle, and farming. He cherished spending time with his family, enjoyed sharing jokes and stories, loved to entertain his nieces and nephews, and later his grandson Thomas. Among his other interests were reading, playing cards, and having coffee with his many friends.

Neil is survived by his wife Kathleen; three sons, Sean of Minneapolis, MN; Ryan of Miller; Darin of Sioux Falls, and one grandson Thomas Cuny; his mother Roberta Harvey of Miller; his siblings Donna (Lonnie) Hanson of Rapid City, Jerry (Marsha) of Casper, WY; Merle (Teresa) of Rapid City, Nancy (Loren) Major of Sioux Falls; 19 nieces and nephews; and 6 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Bill Harvey.

Dorothy Freimark

Dorothy M. Freimark, 95, went home to our Lord on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the Miller Good Samaritan Society in Miller. Visitation was Monday, May 5 at the First United Methodist Church in Miller from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Funeral service was Tuesday, May 6 at the First United Methodist Church in Miller at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Brian Jones and Rev. David Andrews officiating. Interment was at G.A.R. cemetery in Miller. Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence was entrusted with Dorothy’s arrangements.

Our beautiful mother, mother-in-law, grandma, great-grandma, great-great-grandma, sister, sister-in-law, and friend was born on April 11, 1913 in Loomis, South Dakota to Gene and Norma Danburg.

Dorothy married Ralph Freimark, the love of her life on August 12, 1946, in Miller, South Dakota. To this union, two daughters were born.

Dorothy lived in Hand County her entire life. She worked at the Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller, and held various positions there from 1961 until 1981, at which time she retired.

After her retirement, she enjoyed looking after her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed baking for the holidays, playing cards, attending sporting events in which her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participated in, and spending time with all her family and friends.

Those she leaves behind to live on with her beautiful memories are her two daughters, Carolyn (Steve) Danburg, Miller, SD, Sharon (Roger) Kindle, Tenino, WA, eight grandchildren, Staci (Scott) Saugstad, Marshall, MN, Tamie (Barry) Grogan, Miller, SD, Sherry (Bill) Speirs, Hewlett, WY, Tania (Dana) Ruhnke, Miller, SD, Shawn (Kelly) Fernholz, Miller, SD, Tyann (Rob) Baloun, Redfield, SD, Robin (Pat) Colvin, Tenino, WA, and Roger Kindle, Jr. Tenino, WA, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandsons, her siblings Leroy (Deloris) Danburg, Wessington, SD, Lenore Ufen, Miller, SD, and Derla (Dave) Simons, St. Lawrence, SD. Sister-in-laws, Rose Danburg, Miller, SD, and Ruth Roeber, Miller, SD.

She is preceeded in death by her husband, Ralph, in 1983, parents, Gene and Norma, one brother, Ray, one sister, Phyllis, mother and father-in-law, Opal and Rolland Freimark, one sister-in-law, and three brother-in-laws.

Wesley "Andy" Anderson

Wesley “Andy” Anderson, 71, of Wessington, died Monday, December 15th at his home south of Wessington. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 17th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 18th at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial will be at the Wessington cemetery.

Wesley Andrew Anderson was born January 24, 1937 at Platte, SD to Ted and Aleene (Durham) Anderson. Wes moved to Pierre in 1962 and started working for the State of South Dakota in the Buildings and Grounds Department and continued until his retirement on November 10, 2002.

He married Sharon Dick on December 4, 1964 in Pierre. In December 2003 Wes and Sharon moved from rural Pierre to Wessington.

Survivors include his wife Sharon; one son Jeffrey of South Sioux City, NE; one daughter Dawn Dawson; 6 Grandchildren Tyler, Zach, Jessica and Cody Anderson, Carrie and Christopher Dawson ; one sister Marlene Henry of Sioux City, Iowa; Brothers-in-law Herbert (Barb) Dick of Versailles, MO, Gene (Linda) Dick of Oklahoma City, OK, Wallace (Rhonda) Dick of Houston, TX; Sister-in-law Dianne (Ken) Wedge of Wessington; 8 nephews and 7 nieces.

He was preceded in death by his son Randy, mother Aleene Parks, stepfather Edward Parks, sisters Rose Gregory and Wanda Dixon.

Ruth Harrell

Ruth Harrell, 84, of Miller, died Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center of Miller. Visitation will be Friday, November 21 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence, SD with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Ruth’s funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 22 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller with Pastor Bob Ohnstad officiating. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer memorials.

Ruth Eschenbaum was born April 13, 1924 in Logan Township to Henry and Lena (Engelmann) Eschenbaum. She attended White School in Ohio Township and Miller High School. She moved to Chicago, IL and worked for a short time before moving to Seattle, WA where she worked as a drill-press operator, making ammunition for Boeing Aircraft Corporation during World War II.

After the war, Ruth moved to Pierre and on September 9, 1947 married Wilbert Bechtold of Highmore. To this union three children were born. Wilbert died in March of 1952. On April 17, 1953, she married Ola Ray Harrell at Miller, SD. Three children were born to this union. She spent her life as a loving wife, mother, and friend. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Ola; six children, Dennis (Joy) Bechtold of Fruita, CO; Kenneth Bechtold of Huron; Teresa Venjohn of Watertown; Delvin Harrell of Englewood, CO; Melvin (Vicki) Harrell of Aberdeen; Bill (Correen) Harrell of Omaha, NE; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Duane (Roberta) Eschenbaum of Baltic; two sisters, Mary Ann Clodt of Inyokern, CA; JoDean (Vernon) Joy of Miller; one sister-in-law, Donna Eschenbaum of Miller; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Wilbert; two brothers, Robert and Harold; and one sister-in-law, Vonnie Eschenbaum.

Pallbearers are Keith Joy, Kurt Joy, Harrison Eschenbaum, Jeff Eschenbaum, Jim Eschenbaum, Lynn Harrell, Harry Harrell, and Darvin Harrell.

Betty Johnson

Betty Johnson, 81, of Miller, died Tuesday, December 16 at the Avera Hand County Hospital. Betty’s memorial service will be 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 19th at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence with Pastor Calvin Jones officiating.

Betty Jean Shafer was born April 14, 1927 at Tekamah, Nebraska to Bill and Jane (Bowers) Shafer. She went to school through the 6th grade, but quit to help her father shovel coal and unload lumber at the town lumberyard.

Betty moved to Miller in 1950. She helped Oliver Johnson work his farms in Hand County. Betty moved to town around 1963 after Oliver’s death.

Betty helped local people with odd jobs. She enjoyed going to coffee, playing bingo, and fishing. She often went to Highmore to play bingo with her friends. She loved going to the Good Samaritan Center and the Assisted Living Center for their church services. Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Miller.

Survivors include one sister Elizabeth Knight of Omaha, Nebraska and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Robert Shafer, husband Oliver Johnson, sisters Mary and Geneva, and brother Billy.

Martin Schneider

Martin Schneider, 85, of Miller, died Thursday, November 6 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be Sunday, November 9 at Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence from 1:00-4:00 p.m. with a 4:00 p.m. Vigil Service. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 10 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Miller with Fr. Chester Murtha officiating. Interment will be 1:30 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery in Gettysburg, SD.

Martin William Schneider was born on July 22, 1923, at Gettysburg, SD. He attended country school and high school at Gettysburg. He lived on the family farm until he joined the Navy in December 1942. He shipped out on the troop transport USS Leanorwood from Norfolk VA and was assigned to the USS Concord at the Panama Canal. His ship patroled the west coast of South America and operated out of Panama. In the Fall of 1943 his ship carried Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd on a special reconnaissance mission to study airbase sites on islands of the S.E. Pacific. His ship then was assigned to the northern Pacific where it operated off the Aleutian Islands, making raids on Japan until the war’s end. At the end of the war his ship went back through the Panama Canal to Boston and Philadelphia where the USS Concord was decommissioned. Martin was discharged in December 1945 at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital.

When he returned to SD he farmed with his father and brother until he entered barber school. After going to barber school, he worked in Rapid City, Sturgis and Spearfish. He came to Miller in June of 1960 and bought the "Englecke Klip Joint" barber shop in downtown Miller. Later he moved his shop to his home. He retired from barbering in 1996 and spent time traveling to south Texas. Martin was also a gunsmith and locksmith. He loved to build things including his famous "trike" out of a Harley motorcycle and volkswagon and lots of odds and ends. His constant companion was always a poodle. He enjoyed attending his ships reunions every year and visiting with his old shipmates.

Martin is survived by one sister, JoAnn (Melvin) Heck of Kerrville, TX, a sister-in-law Marlys Schneider of Gettysburg, 8 nephews Don (Brenda) Scheller of the Phillipines, Doug (Donna) Scheller of Rapid City, David Scheller of Rochelle Park, NJ, Bob (Kris) Schneider of Pierre, Jim Schneider, Aurora, NE, Mike (Julie) Heck of Lake Ridge, VA, Tim (Jackie) Heck of Wildomar, CA, Larry (Gaye Nell) Heck of Los Altos, CA; 3 nieces Pat Hardie, Spearfish, Kathy Schneider, Council Bluffs, IA, and Renee (Guy) Cornett, Austin, TX and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna Schneider of Gettysburg, a brother Leland of Gettysburg and a sister and brother-in-law Eleanor and Don Scheller of Arlington.

Bob DeGeest

Bob DeGeest Jr., 50, of Miller, died Wednesday, March 5 at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

Robert “Bob” DeGeest Jr. was born in Huron, SD on April 19, 1957 to Robert Sr. and Carol DeGeest. Bob attended school in Miller and participated in student government, the school newspaper, track, wrestling and football. He was on the Sioux Falls Argus Leader and Sports Writers All-State eleven man football teams and the Prep All America Football team in 1974 and 1975. He graduated from Miller High School in 1975. He then attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. He played football and lettered for 4 years with Coach Beanie Cooper and staff. He managed a sporting goods store in Denver, Colorado and coached football in Arvada, Colorado. He then worked for Johnson Concrete in Rapid City and helped with football in Sturgis. In St. Peter, Minnesota he worked for Lambert Building before returning to Miller. Bob sincerely loved working with the youth of the area. Their wins were great and their losses hard, but he hoped they had learned what to do better next time. A friend said he was a gentle giant.

Survivors include his mother Carol of Miller; father Robert of Redfield; one sister Connie Jo (Tim) Casey of Glencoe, MN; three nephews James, Kyle and Garrett Casey all of Glencoe, MN; several aunts, uncles and their families and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Joe and Evelyn Novacek and Cornielius and Mary DeGeest, one cousin and several aunts and uncles.

Bob’s body was donated to the University of South Dakota Medical School. A family service will be held at a later date. Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence has been entrusted with Bob’s arrangements.

Burton Sargent

Burton Orr Sargent, 80, of Miller, died Thursday, October 2nd at the Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller. Visitation was 5:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, October 5th at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. Funeral service was 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 6th at the St. Lawrence Community Church in St. Lawrence with Pastor John Rasko officiating. Interment was at the Wessington cemetery.

Burton Orr Sargent was born June 15, 1928 to Johnnie and Laura Sargent on a farm east of Murdo, SD. They lived on several farms in Jones County before moving to Gilbert Township, Hand County in 1939 where he lived most of his life. He was happy to find friendly schoolmates at Brown School where he attended elementary school. He attended Miller High School and later South Dakota State Agricultural College.

Burton married Helen Dague on June 24, 1948. They lived in the Gilbert Township, Hand County, where they raised their four children. He was very active in his rural Wessington church, Tipton Community, and later attended the St. Lawrence Community Church when Tipton closed. He served on the Gilbert Township board, the Victory Bible Camp board and held several offices at Tipton Community Church. Due to his health he had to retire from farming in 1997.

Being a farmer was his main interest, but he also enjoyed working his cattle and hunting rabbits, pheasants and gophers. He loved music and his children remember his whistling while driving the open air tractor. He played a number of musical instruments, including the guitar, accordion, harmonica, organ and piano. He also amused his children and grandchildren with the silly songs he sang to them.

Survivors include three sons, Kirk (Christine) Sargent of Wessington, Kent (Elaine) Sargent of Wessington, Mark (JoAnne) Sargent of Huron; one daughter Kaye (Rudy) Vercler of Washington, IL; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother John Sargent of Wessington Springs; and one sister Elaine Martens of Huron. He was preceded in death by his brothers Kenneth and Roger.

Lynn Gates

Lynn A. Gates, 59, of Miller, died Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at the Huron Regional Medical Center after a three year battle with cancer. There will be visitation from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, October 17th at Trinity Lutheran Church with a 7:00 p.m. service. Everyone is invited to a gathering at Lynn and Paulette’s home following the service. Interment will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 18th at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen. Friends may sign Lynn’s online register book at www.remboldfuneralhome.com.

Lynn Allen Gates was born June 10, 1949 to Leo and Lillian (Haar) Gates at Aberdeen, SD. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1967.

On February 18, 1967 he married his wife of forty-one years, Paulette K. Hoffman. Shortly after their marriage they moved to San Jose, California where they lived for seven years. He worked as a plumber and also in animal research. He then moved back to Aberdeen and was a plumber for 20 years. In 1984 Lynn went to work for FMC Corporation as a welder and purchasing agent. Lynn and Paulette moved to Miller in 1992 after purchasing Miller Feed Service, a Purina Feed dealership. He was active in youth rodeo, 4-H, and FFA activities in Hand and Beadle Counties.

Lynn’s loves were his horses and cows, rodeos, his grandchildren and all kids. He never turned down a kid for any reason. He served on the South Dakota High School Rodeo Board of Directors and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and many other state and local organizations.

Survivors include his wife Paulette; two children and their spouses, Paullyn (Blaine) Carey of Huron, Casey (Sara) Gates of Miller; seven grandchildren, Sidney, Trey, Kallie, Gracie, Tatum, Tyra and Ellie; Six brothers and sisters, Kathie (David) Murphy of Rapid City, Glenda (Jim) Kolkman of Rapid City, Harlan (Vickie) Gates of Aberdeen, Jana Fischer of Watertown, Jeff (Laurie) Gates of Watertown, and Barry (Lana) Gates of Lincoln, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Lillian Gates and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Lorraine Hoffman. Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence has been entrusted with Lynn’s arrangements.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.

Donna Barrows

Donna Rae Barrows, 67, of Faulkton, died Saturday, January 17th at ManorCare Health Center in Aberdeen. Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 22nd at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic church in Faulkton with Fr. Joji Itukulapati officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 21st from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. rosary and prayer service also at the church. Burial will be at the Faulkton cemetery.

Donna Rae was born Dec. 6th, 1941 at Rockham, S.D., to the late Joseph P. and Carrie Joyce. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic grade school in Zell and then Redfield High School. Donna lived in Zell until her marriage to Kenneth “Kenny” Barrows on Nov. 28th, 1963. They made their home and farmed east of Faulkton for many years.

Donna enjoyed many things. A few included spending time with her friends and family and she loved flowers. She especially enjoyed each summer when her granddaughter, Cheyenne, would come and visit for a few weeks.

She is survived by her three children, son, Tim Barrows of Vermillion, S.D.; two daughters, Joyce Barrows of Waconia, Mn. and Julie (Greg) Fischbach of Warner, S.D.; three grandchildren, Cheyenne Davis of Waconia, Mn. and twins Ashley and Keeley Fischbach of Warner, S.D.; two brothers, Dr. Armond “Terry” (Amalia) Joyce of Slidell, La. and Dan (Jolene) Joyce of St. Cloud, Mn.; two brothers-in-law, William (Mary) Barrows of Clarksville, Tn, Gordon (Margie) Barrows of Rochester Mn; one sister-in-law Clara Klettke of Kulm, N.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenny on October 12th, 2008; infant son, Troy; her oldest brother, Patrick Joyce.

Casketbearers will be Richard Joyce, Ron Joyce, Robert Joyce, Brad Joyce, Josh Joyce and Brian Seamen.

Greg Nolz

Greg L. Nolz, 25, of Miller, died unexpectedly Monday, February 2nd at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 6th at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, February 5th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. Burial will be at the G.A.R. cemetery in Miller.

Gregory Lee was born on March 18, 1983 to Anna (Pettit) Nolz and Lee Nolz at Hand County Memorial Hospital. He attended elementary and high school in Miller, where he graduated in 2002.

Greg was employed by Tri-State Insulation in Miller for the last several years. He had also worked at Performance Seeds of Miller. Prior to that he had lived and worked in Pierre.

Greg was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting and fishing. Pheasant season was a favorite time of year for him. He liked creating meals out of wild game. He enjoyed working on vehicles. He enjoyed video games in his spare time, as well as motorsports, including racing and working on go-carts with his brother, Mark. His pride and joy was his pickup.

He loved his family and friends and would do anything to help them. He liked going to visit friends and spending time with them. He especially loved playing with his young nephews and trying to help family whenever he could.

Greg is survived by his parents, Lee and Anna Nolz of Miller, two sisters, Sarah, of Miller, and Teresa, of Aberdeen, and two brothers, Mark and Jeff, of Miller, two nephews, Ryder and Wyatt of Miller, his grandmothers, Charlotte Nolz and Colleen Koeck, both of Miller, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Jimmy Wayne Pettit, Paul Nolz, and Don Koeck, as well as one aunt, Candy Nolz, and one cousin, Alex Pettit.
