Jerome Naber

Jerome F. Naber, 74, of Pierre, formerly of Polo, died Thursday, August 12, 2010 at St. Mary's Healthcare Center in Pierre. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 14 at St. Liborious Catholic Church in Polo. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary cemetery in Polo.

Jerome was born January 5, 1936 at Faulkton the second of three sons to Frank and Renata (Wieseler) Naber of Polo. Jerome attended St. Liborious Elementary graduating from Fairview High School in 1954. After farming with his father for two years, Jerome entered the Army in 1956, receiving training at Fort Chaffee, AR and Fort Belvoir, VA. He was transferred to Fort Richardson, AK, where the remainder of his military service was as a member of the Military Police. On June 26th 1957, he and Carol Ann Martinmaas of Polo were married by the Air Force Chaplin at Fort Elmendorf Air Force Base.

Following his army discharge in 1958 he and Carol returned to South Dakota and Jerome became the manager of the Farmers’ Oil Company in Orient. Jerome was elected Mayor of Orient and directed the construction of a new building to house the Farmers’ Oil Company complete with new service bays.

Jerome was especially proud of his leadership role planning and preparing the Orient Jubilee. He often reminisced of driving in the parade with his 5 year old daughter Jody by his side, dressed in a pioneer style dress made by her mother Carol, in a new Buick convertible that he had convinced an Aberdeen car dealer to provide.

In 1970 the family moved to Aberdeen and in 1972 Jerome moved to Denver, Colorado where he worked in the construction industry. In the late 1970’s Jerome moved to Casper, Wyoming where he was supervisor for Steel Structures Inc. He retired to Polo, SD. He met Dorothy Louise McGruder in 1993 and they were married on September 2, 1995. They purchased a home in Pierre in 1996 where Jerome enjoyed hobbies such as yard work, finishing projects, and home improvement.

He is survived by children, Louis Francis (Kristie) of Hudson, Wisconsin, Margaret Mary of Columbia, South Carolina, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Jerome is also survived by his second wife, Dorothy Louise Naber of Pierre, South Dakota and brother Leo (Betty) Naber of Polo, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by brother Bernard, wife Carol Ann Naber and two of their four children, Jodine Marie and Russell Jerome.

Jerry Schock

Jerry “Shakey” Schock, 61, of Ree Heights, died Friday, September 3 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller. Jerry’s memorial service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, September 7 at the Ree Heights Auditorium with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Inurnment will follow at Morningside cemetery in Ree Heights.

On April 9, 1949 Shakey was born in Miller, SD, the youngest child of Theodore and Emily (Burkhardt), growing up on the farm and in Ree Heights.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971 completing two tours in Vietnam. He earned several medals including the NDSM, VSM, VCM, BSM and Gallantry Cross with Palm.

Following his military service, among other jobs, he was an over the road truck driver for Steve DeGeest, and then became an owner operator. He switched professions and raised pigs for a number of years, but then the semi truck driver returned. He left St. Lawrence Elevator, after 10 years, to fulfill his dream. He ran Shakey’s Tavern for 3 great years.

Due to Shakey’s health, he had to completely retire, but at noon every work day, he usually could be found at the “Office” playing pinochle with his friends.

Jerry was a member of the Volunteer Ree Heights Fire Department and an active member of the American Legion and V.F.W. He was on the Ree Heights Town Board. Jerry always enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially for the bullheads.

Jerry met Marlene (Cowan) in the Hills of Ree Heights at the first Ree Heights pig feed. Jerry and Marlene were married in Las Vegas on February 9th, 1981. They had 3 daughters, Emily, Amber, and Jennifer. Jerry was a cherished husband, father, and grandfather. He will be sorely missed.

Survivors include his wife Marlene of Ree Heights, daughters, Emily Schock of Aberdeen, Amber (Adam) Harford of Redfield and Jennifer Schock of Ree Heights; His pride and joy, grandson Logan; one brother Verlin (Irene) Schock of Evergreen, CO; two sisters, Alice Obermueller of San Jose, CA and Arlene “Susie” (Verlin) Tollefson of Hitchcock, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Vivian Hammill and Betty Schwartz and one infant brother Loren.

Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence has been entrusted with Jerry’s arrangements.

LeRoy Danburg

LeRoy Louis Danburg, 92, of Miller, died Sunday November 21, 2010 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday November 26 at the First United Methodist Church in Miller with Rev. Mary Ann Sheldon officiating. Visitation will be at the church two hours before the service. Burial will follow at G.A.R. cemetery in Miller.

LeRoy Louis Danburg was born August 29, 1918 to Eugene and Norma (Shonbrun) Danburg at Miller, South Dakota. He attended and graduated from St. Lawrence High School in 1936. On May 15, 1942 LeRoy went to serve in the United States Army in World War II, in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged on October 17, 1945.

LeRoy married Deloris May Root on March 5, 1946 in Miller. They lived in Midland township where they farmed. LeRoy and Deloris moved to Miller in 1962 where he and his dad, Gene, had a trucking business for 22 years. LeRoy was then employed by the Miller School District as custodian at the armory and the activities bus driver for 21 years.

He was well known to his grandkids as “Papa Roy” and even several school students called him by that name.

LeRoy was a member of the VFW for 49 years, was a 4H Leader and served on the Midland township board for several years.

Deloris and LeRoy were avid race fans during the years their sons were racing. They enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle, and loved to travel. During LeRoy’s retirement years he loved doing woodcrafts.

LeRoy is survived by his wife, Deloris of Miller; one daughter, Becky (Lyle) Resel of Wessington; four sons, Chet (Karen) Danburg of Carson City, Nevada, Steve (Caroline) Danburg of Miller, Randy Danburg of Miller, Terry (Lori) Danburg of Wessington; twenty five grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; two sisters, Lenore Ufen and Derla (Dave) Simons both of Miller; one sister-in-law Rose Danburg of Miller.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gene and Norma; one brother Ray; two sisters, Phyllis and Dorothy; mother and father-in-law Chet and Jenny Root; step father-in-law Emil Weber; three brothers-in-law; and two grandsons, Chet and Todd Danburg.

Sharon Yost

Sharon Yost, 69, of Miller, died Thursday, December 2 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 6 at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, December 5 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service all at Rembold Funeral Home. Burial will be at G.A.R. cemetery.

Sharon Marie Peterson was born October 10, 1941, in Viborg, South Dakota, to Wesley and Doris Peterson. She grew up and attended school in Viborg graduating from Viborg High School. After high school, Sharon attended Stewart’s School of Hairstyling. In 1959, Sharon moved to Miller to work at Ida’s Beauty Salon. While in Miller, she met Neil Yost.

On October 17, 1960, she married Neil and they farmed and ranched in South Hand County for 20 years. Sharon and Neil moved to Miller in 1985 where Sharon worked at the Good Samaritan Center for 12 years.

Sharon enjoyed playing cards, dancing, camping, and most of all spending time with her family.

Sharon is survived by her husband Neil of Miller; a son, David (Joyce) Yost of Huron; a daughter, Deanne (Alan) Steinke of Colome; five grandchildren, Gerry Shaw, Eric Shaw, Clint Hall, Jesse (Angela) Hall, and Shane Yost; her mother, Doris Peterson of Viborg; a brother, Pete (Phyllis) Peterson of Webster City, Iowa; four sisters, Roberta (Curtis) Rassmussen of Viborg, Char (Dick) Sorum of Renner, Elaine (Mark) Johnson of Sioux Falls, and Paulette (Glen) Hanson of Gilbert, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Lois Yost and Dee (Larry) Danburg; one brother-in-law, Jerry (Sharon) Yost; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wesley G. Peterson.

Marcella Voigt

Marcella Christena Voigt, formerly of Miller, died on her 85th birthday, Tuesday, December 14 at the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center. Visitation with the family present will be Friday, December 17 at the Rembold Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 18 at the First United Methodist Church in Miller with Rev. Mary Ann Sheldon officiating. Burial will be at the G.A.R. cemetery. Friends and family may sign Marci’s online register at www.remboldfuneralhome.com.

Marcella Christena Lippert was born December 14, 1925, at Parkston, SD to Edward and Christene (Mudder) Lippert. Marci graduated from Avon High School and later Southern State College in Springfield, SD.

On October 7, 1943, Marcella married Newton D. Voigt. To this union two children were born.

Marci taught school in Parkston for 6 years and later in Miller for 30 years until her retirement in 1992. She had a passion for teaching and thoroughly enjoyed all her students. She was also known for being a beautiful seamstress. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were very important to her and always made her smile.

Survivors include her daughter, LaDonna (Steve) Speirs of Yankton, SD; four grandchildren, Christena (Scott) Schultz of Emory, SD, Scott Voigt of Huron, SD, Brooks Speirs of Denver, CO, Sondra (David) Naber of Wessington, SD; 9 great grandchildren; 6 siblings, Leola Lukkes of Tyndall, SD, Darlene Baumiller-Zangle of Mitchell, SD, Elroy (Ruth) Lippert of Parkston, SD, Elwood (Janet) Lippert of Yankton, SD, Danelda (Francis) VanDuysen of Wagner, SD, and Eldean (Gloria) Lippert of Yankton, SD; Sisters-in-law, Amelia (Bill) Rattray of Centralia, WA and Shirley Voigt of Clearbrook, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Newton D. Voigt, son Lewyln Voigt, brothers-in-law, Lewis Baumiller, Harvey Zangle, Cornelius Lukkes, and Dwight Voigt.

Esther Blachford

Esther Blachford, 86, of Miller, died Wednesday, December 29 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 5 at the First Baptist Church in Miller with Rev. Kent Atkinson officiating. Visitation will be at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4. Burial will be at the G.A.R. cemetery in Miller.

Esther was born May 31, 1924 at Omaha, Nebraska to Anton and Iva (Bower) Jensen. She was raised in Omaha, and attended South High School graduating in 1941. On August 26, 1942 Esther married Virgil Laverne Almond in Miller. They resided on a farm south of Miller until Virgil’s death in 1967. She then moved to Miller, and worked at the Hand County Hospital as a nurses aide. She was married to Norman Blachford on September 21, 1968 in Pierre. Esther lived her entire life in Miller until recently when she moved into the Highmore Healthcare Center. After many years of devotion at the hospital, she retired from that position to provide daycare for area children. She truly loved her job and loved providing for the children. She had many talents, including crocheting, knitting, sewing and baking. She spent countless hours making clothes, hats and gloves as gifts.

Esther is survived by two daughters, Virleen (Ed) Brown of Tuolomne, CA, Marsha (Rod) Davis of Miller; two sons, Rick (Bev) Almond of Kimberling City, MO, David (Joni) Blachford of Miller; 25 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton Jensen and Iva Rosella (Bower) LeStrange, step-father Bill LeStrange, husbands Virgil Almond and Norman Blachford, son Preston Virgil Almond, daughter Kathy (Almond) Stanphill, grandson Chris Swartz, and brother Robert Jensen.

Ruben Widmayer

Ruben Ralph Widmayer, 83, of Miller, died Tuesday, September 28 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller surrounded by his loving family

Ruben's funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 1 at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, September 30 from 5pm to 7pm with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence.

Ruben was born on September 19th 1927 to Gottlieb & Katherine Widmayer who emigrated from Germany to Iowa. His dad was a minister so he spent all his childhood in rural country areas, wherever his dad had a parish.

He joined the military at the end of WWII. Due to his German heritage he was called to Germany to be an interpreter for the CIA. During this time he was able to see many of his relatives who had survived the war.

After his time in the army he attended college in Yankton SD where he met his lifelong love & companion Donna McClelland. Donna and Ruben were married on March 18th 1951. To this union three daughters were born. After graduation he taught high school in St. Lawrence, SD where he was also the basketball coach. Given the opportunity to go to law school and promised a partnership with Herb Heidepriem, he decided to take advantage of a program in Vermillion SD and go back to college to become an attorney.

Ruben’s involvement in the community included building the Hand County Library & helping establish the Good Samaritan Center. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, Kiwanis, and Miller city council. He touched the lives of many people & will remain in our hearts forever.

Honored to share his life was his loving wife of 61 years Donna, daughters Deborah (Michael) Jorgensen, Tera Fawcett and Judy (Jerry) Koeck. His grandchildren Nicole (Arlen) Gortmaker, Kristen (Matthew) Krieger, Stephen Koeck, Kelly (Samuel) Felix, Lacey Fawcett, Rebekah Koeck, Colton Fawcett, Angela Koeck, Josiah Fawcett and Christian Koeck, and four beloved great-grandchildren Caden, Isaiah, & Allie Gortmaker & Jackson Krieger.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gottleib & Katherine, brothers Ted, & John, sisters Ruth & Lydia and an infant brother.

In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.

Jacob Walter

Jacob A. Walter, 87, of St. Lawrence, died Wednesday, December 29 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, Janaury 7 at the St. Lawrence Community Church with Pastor John Rasko officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, January 6 from 5:00-7:00 at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. Burial will be at the St. Lawrence cemetery.

Emil Wagner

Emil Wagner, 104, of Miller, died Friday, December 31, 2010 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be Friday, January 7 from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service all at Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. Emil's funeral service will be at a later date. The family requests no memorials until the funeral day. Burial will be at G.A.R. cemetery in Miller.

Bonniemae Freitag

Bonniemae Freitag, 78, of Miller, died Friday, February 11, at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 at the First Baptist Church in Miller with the Rev. Kent Atkinson officiating.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service, all at the First Baptist Church in Miller.

Inurnment will be at the Tulare cemetery at a later date.

Bonniemae was born March 14, 1932 at Mitchell, South Dakota. She was an only child.

She met Rudy Freitag in September 1964, and they were married on December 10, 1964. They celebrated 46 years of married life together and raised four children.

Bonniemae worked at Namanny’s Café, The Driftwood Café and the Miller nursing home. She also helped Rudy when they owned the pool hall.

Bonniemae enjoyed people. She always made time to visit and would ask how things were going with others. She enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, babysitting and she really loved playing Bingo.

As her children left home and had families of their own, she always wanted to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She would always show pictures and talk about each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were her pride and joy.

Bonniemae is survived by her husband, Rudolph (Rudy) of Miller; four children, John (Jeannette) of Norfolk, Va., Duane (JoAnn) of Sioux Falls, Donna Genzler of Rockham, and Karen (Russell Tice) Hoag of Miller; 15 grandchildren, Dawn, April, Holly, Tim, Tom (Candance), Hope, Amanda, Bobbie-Jo, Echo Lynn, Billy-Jo, Melisa (Victor), Scott (Kristin), Michael, Shelby and Dana; 12 great-grandchildren, John, Benny, Kareem, Autum, Nickki, Aylen, Elizabeth, Dustin, Joseph, Lori, Marcus and Bryan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Jacob Ballad and Ina (Johnson) Ballad, and one grandson, Eric.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Rembold Funeral Home.
