Dorothy Wellner

Dorothy (Shaykett) Wellner, 81, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Miller, died Thursday, February 24 at Doughtery Hospice House in Sioux Falls.

Dorothy's memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 28 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller with Pastor Bob Ohnstad officiating.Inurnment will be at a later date at the Danish Lutheran cemetery, Nisland, SD.

Dorothy was born January 29, 1930 to John and Kate Adams in Vale, SD. On June 16, 1950 she married Charles R. Shaykett and they moved to Huron, SD. They later moved to Miller, SD where she worked with Charles in his insurance and real estate business. Charles passed away in 1983.

In December of 1991, Dorothy married Frank “Bud” Wellner. They resided at Lee’s Corner near Ft. Thompson for several years before returning to Miller. In 2010 they moved to Sioux Falls.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller. She was an avid bowler, and enjoyed playing card games. Most of all she enjoyed being around her family and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; brothers, Fredrick and Elmer; and her son, Greg Shaykett.

Grateful for having share her life are her husband, Frank “Bud” Wellner; a son, Steven (Dianna) Shaykett, Hartford, SD; grandchildren, Jessica (Scott Whitely) Shaykett, St. Paul, MN, Travis (Katie) Shaykett, Sioux Falls, SD; step son, Frankie (Cathy) Wellner, Pierre, SD; step-grandchildren, Patrick Wellner, Pierre, SD, Megan Wellner, Sioux Falls; and sisters, Rosie Zwetzig, Sturgis, SD and Mildred Brunner, Vale, SD.

Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence has been entrusted with Dorothy's arrangements.

Beverly Ringlbauer

Beverly Loraine Ringlbauer, 85, of St. Lawrence, died peacefully in her sleep Saturday, March 19, at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 22nd at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Miller with Fr. Chester Murtha officiating. Visitation will be Monday, March 21, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 scripture service all at Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. MST Wednesday March 23rd at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis with Rev. Arnold Kari officiating. Friends and family may sign Beverly’s online register at www.remboldfuneralhome.com.

Beverly was born November 23, 1925 in Miller to Bernard and Anna (Dobmeier) Goyke. Beverly attended school in the Miller/Polo area, graduating from Polo High School.

On July 24, 1946 she married Roderick Ringlbauer in Miller. They farmed in the Miller/St. Lawrence area until 1957, when they moved to Rapid City. While her husband worked construction, Beverly was a homemaker and mother raising 6 children while also running the couple’s dairy business. In 1977 they returned to St. Lawrence residing at the Goyke homestead, in York Township where Beverly bred and raised Paint horses.

She was a member of the American Paint Horse Association and the South Dakota Paint Horse Club, serving on the board in various positions and was secretary of the club at the time of her death.

She was an avid Nascar fan, following Dale Jr. whether live at the track or on TV.

Beverly is survived by two sons, Randy R. (Deb) of Amarillo, TX, Jerry R of Sioux Falls; four daughters, Diane (Don) Pugh of Miller, Sherry (Lon) Sidle of Rapid City, Barbara Reckling of Wall, Linda (Frank) Gilbert of Anchorage AK; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; two sisters, Berniece Simons of Miller and Colleen Kearns of Olathe, KS.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two great grandsons and three infant sister.

Rembold Funeral Home of St. Lawrence has been entrusted with Beverly’s arrangements.

Lauretta Schaefers

Lauretta Mae Schaefers, 82, of Cavour, formerly of Miller and Federal Way, Washington, died Wednesday, April 20 at her daughter's home in Cavour after a short battle with cancer. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Miller with Fr. Chester Murtha officiating. Visitation will be Monday, April 25 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. scripture service all at St. Ann Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Ann Catholic cemetery in Miller.

Lauretta was born May 4, 1928 in Miller to Vern and Bernice (Hamilton) Johnson.

Lauretta married Lloyd Bud McMahon in 1946. To this union, five children were born. Bud died in 1964.

In 1968, she married Al Roesler. He died in 1973.

In November of 1983, Lauretta married Duane Schaefers.

She worked at various places including the Hand County Clinic, Wilbers Feed and Seed and Ree Electric Coop. After moving to Washington, Lauretta worked as a receptionist and office manager for a drug and alcohol treatment agency for 22 years. She retired in July of 2009.

Lauretta was a past member of St. Ann Catholic Church where she was a religious instructor. She was a member of the St. Vincent Parish in Federal Way, Wash.

Survivors include her husband, Duane of Cavour; a daughter, Helen LeeAnn (Hugh) Miner of Cavour; three sons, Michael (Charlotte) McMahon of Huron, Patrick (Jean) McMahon of Houston, Texas, and Tim (Verna) McMahon of Miller; fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; a sister Lenore (Warren) Case of Daleville, Ala.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Bud and Al; one infant son, Joseph; and one sister, LaVerne Valentine.

Ton`ia Miller

Ton`ia Miller, 88, of Miller, died Saturday, April 30 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Miller with Fr. Chester Murtha officiating. Inurnment will be at St. Ann Catholic cemetery.

Elizabeth Ann Strand was born April 13, 1923 to George and Florence (O’Connor) Strand at Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Ton’ia was blessed to have shared in the lives of her “Wyoming Family, ” Rhonda and Bob Boyd, along with their daughters Kendall and Kelly. The Boyds welcomed her into their family, enjoying many holidays and evenings out to dinner.

Work was a source of great pride for Ton’ia. For many years she was employed as Office Manager for Les Darnall at his business “Wyoming Wood Stove and Decorating” in Laramie, Wyoming. She loved working almost as much as she loved Les and his family. Ton’ia was fortunate to work until she was 87 years old. She retired in May 2010, just two weeks before moving to Miller, SD.

After arriving in Miller, Ton’ia moved into the Joy Apartments. She greatly enjoyed the friendships she made with the other Gals in the apartments. She was always quick with a joke or story. Ton’ia was known to regale her experiences and adventures of an earlier lifetime spent traveling the world.

One of her favorite pastimes was talking (and bragging) about her 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Grandma always had a big smile on her face whenever the subject of her grandkids arose. She kept close track of each of them and was never late with a birthday card.

Ton’ia is survived by her daughter Mary (Leo) Beranek of Miller; grandchildren: John Beranek, Tom (Robin) Beranek, Barb (Gerry) Rounds, Tim (Paula) Beranek, James Beranek, Angela (Davin) Brandt, and Joe Beranek; and great-grandchildren: Austin, Garret, Isaac and Sarah Rounds, Bernadette and Mary Alice Beranek, John, Luke and Leo Brandt, and Brooke and Karleigh Beranek.

The Beranek family is grateful for the help and care provided to Grandma by Donna Engelmann. Donna’s assistance allowed Grandma to maintain her independence – something extremely important to her - throughout the last year of her life.

Jim Peck

Jim Peck, 71, of St. Lawrence, died Friday, May 6 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 11 at the St. Lawrence Community Church. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 10 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service all at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. Interment will be at St. Ann Catholic cemetery.

Geraldine Ames

Geraldine Kay Ames, 71, of Virgil, died Wednesday, May 4 at Fire Steel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7th at the Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence. Visitation will be two hours before the funeral at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Tulare cemetery.

Geraldine Kay Blake was born December 9, 1939 to Raphael and Mable (Hammill) Blake in Miller. She grew up and attended country school in rural Ree Heights. She attended Ree Heights High School, graduating in 1957. Gerry and her mother then moved to Huron for a short time after her father’s death. While in Huron she graduated from the Huron Business School.

Gerry then returned to Ree Heights where she met Steve “Bud” Ames. They were married nearly 50 years ago on June 11, 1961. They farmed by Wessington Springs for a short time and then moved northwest of Miller near Bud’s family farm. They then moved to the Virgil area to live and farm and have been there for 45 years.

Geraldine is one of a dying breed of farm/ranch wives. She put in many hours of cooking meals for Bud and the farm help and even hauled many fried chicken meals to the field for the guys. Many times Gerry would get on a tractor to help in the hay field. She also helped move cattle many times on either horse or in a pickup. She raised chickens, milked cows and helped raise many calves, lambs, pigs, cats, dogs and even a pet raccoon. Gerry grew many gardens over the years. She was a great cook and baker and many drop in guests were treated to a good meal at Bud and Gerry’s table.

Gerry did some fishing with her family when they were younger but her favorite past times were planting flowers and sewing for herself and her family. She made many Easter dresses, prom dresses and dress clothes for her children and herself over the years. Her proudest moments in sewing were the making of her wedding gown, her daughter’s wedding gown and her granddaughter’s first communion dresses.

In the last few years she started quilting and sewing doll clothes for her family. She was an avid NASCAR fan and cheered on her favorite drivers. She loved cheering for the Vikings, Twins and Cornhuskers over the years. She also enjoyed watching rodeos.

The times Gerry enjoyed most are the times spent with family, children and grandchildren. Visits were always too short so many phone calls were enjoyed between visits

Gerry lived a quiet existence here on earth and invested nearly all her time and energy in her family. When Gerry was asked what her greatest accomplishments are, she would say her family, which consists of Steve “Bud” Ames, her husband of nearly 50 years; daughter, Sandra (Alan) Woytassek of Aberdeen, SD; two sons, Randy (Kate) Ames of Grand Island, Nebraska, Rick Ames of Mitchell, South Dakota; All of whom are so grateful and blessed to have shared in Gerry’s life. Also grateful and blessed are her eight grandchildren, Abby, Kendra, Rebecca, Alexandra and Andrea Woytassek of Aberdeen, Wyatt, Garrett and Levi Ames of Grand Island; one sister Joyce Blake of Ft. Bragg, California; and numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister in law Delton and Mabel Blake and an infant sister Dorothy.

Rudolph "Rudy" Freitag

Rudolph “Rudy” Freitag, 86, of Miller, died Sunday, June 12, at the Good Samaritan Center in Miller. Rudy’s memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 17 at the First Baptist Church in Miller with Rev. Kent Atkinson officiating.

Rudolph Lee Freitag was born August 10, 1924 to Gustav and Annette (Trottnow) Freitag on their family farm near Kaylor, South Dakota. He attended school at Kaylor, graduating from Kaylor High School in 1942.

He helped his parents around the farm and later moved to Portland, Oregon with his mother and sisters, Leona and Ella. He worked in a pet store where his fondest memories were of the Boston Bull Terriers.

Rudy moved back to Miller and helped his sister Ruth and her husband on their farm before managing the Pool Hall on Main Street of Miller. In 1964 he met Bonniemae Funk at Nammany’s Café after he dared her to throw a glass of water on him. They were married December 10, 1964. Rudy went to work for Wayne White south of Ree Heights before eventually working for TJ Poindexter and Dub Clement north of Ree Heights. After a brief taste of retirement, he decided that he and Bonniemae should deliver newspapers in Miller. They delivered 150 papers and always had the paper there before people go up to have their morning coffee.

Rudy moved to the Good Samaritan Healthcare Center in May 2009 due to health issues.

Rudy loved to sit outside for hours and watch the traffic go by in the Spring and Summer while in the Fall and Winter you could find him watching football, cheering for his favorite team, the Vikings. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, as they were the apple of his eye.

Rudy was a hard working, honest man of few words. He touched the hearts of everyone that met him.

Blessed to have shared his life are is daughter, Karen (David Tice) Hoag of Miller; step son, John (Jeanette) Funk of Nokesville, Virginia; grandchildren, Shelby and Dana Tice, Dawn, April and Holly Funk, Tim, Tom, Hope and Amanda Funk, Melisa and Michael Genzler; 11 great grandchildren; sister, Leona of Portland, Oregon; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bonniemae, his wife of 46 years, grandson Eric, seven brothers and five sisters.

Gary "Gabby" Gabriel

Gary "Gabby" Gabriel, 70, of Miller, died Friday, June 17 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital. Gary’s memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 25 at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Huron.

Gary Ray Gabriel was born May 23, 1941 to Frank R. and Imogene (Holcomb) Gabriel in Redfield, SD.

He spent the first five years of his life in Rockham, SD. From there his family moved to Miller, SD where he spent his childhood. In 1956, he moved with his family to Huron, SD and finished high school there.

After graduation, he took to the road pursuing a career in music. He was a traveling musician for many years with several bands. His efforts paid off and earned him a place in the Midwest Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame with the band The Green Men. He truly enjoyed entertaining and continued to play music throughout his life.

He eventually made his way back home to South Dakota where he met and married Irene Kuper. They were married on June 18, 1969 in Long Prairie, MN. They moved to Appleton, WI to start their family. Four sons were born from their union. They moved several more times throughout the marriage. One of the happiest times in their lives was living in Layton, Utah in a beautiful home in the mountains. At that time, Gary was a successful businessman. Eventually, the family moved back to South Dakota. Gary was a man of many trades, no matter what he did, he was good at it. During the last 20 years he sold insurance and drove truck for a mail route until he retired.

He is survived by sons Justin of Huron, Michael of Miller, and Mark and his granddaughter Keara Ray of Huron, four sisters Rita Rudloff and Mary Jane (George) Wilson both of Huron, Gloria Clarke, of Ottertail, MN, and Susan Rasmussen of Kaukauna, WI, also his father Frank R Gabriel of Cresbard, SD.

He is preceded in death by his son Darren, his mother Imogene Marsh, his step-father Lloyd Marsh, his brother-in-laws Edward Rudloff, Rodger Clarke and Alan Rasmussen.

Dr. Norm Meriweather

Dr. Norm Meriweather, 89, of Miller, died Friday, June 17 at his home at the Courtyard Villa Assisted Living Center following a long hard fight against cancer. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 23 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 22 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service all at Rembold Funeral Home. Burial will follow at G.A.R. cemetery in Miller.

Norman Rockwell Meriweather was born December 20, 1921 on a farm in Oswego, KS to William and Addie Tomanza (Robinson) Meriweather. He graduated from high school in 1939 in Chetopa, KS and from Kansas State College in 1943 with a degree in Geology. He served in the U.S. Army infantry during World War II from 1943-1946 entering the service as a Private and discharged as a Captain. Norm was a South Dakota State Game Warden from 1946-1950 when he returned to Kansas State and graduated from the school of Veterinary Medicine in 1955. He was a business partner in Miller with his brother, Dr. Herb Meriweather from 1955-1978. Dr. Norm retired in 1983 after serving as President of Meriweather Vet Supply for over 15 years. He was President of the South Dakota Veterinary Association in 1969 and Veterinarian of the Year in 1983. He was also appointed to the SDSU Agriculture Advisory Committee and was President in 1970. He was a charter member of the Miller Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, a member of Wall Lake Hunting Club and it’s second President. Norm was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on the church council for many years and as its council President. He was also on the Building Committee when the present church was erected in 1959 and also for the new parsonage in the early 1960’s. Norm served on the Board of Directors for many years at First State Bank Miller, the current Quoin Bank.

Norm also enjoyed the great outdoors; he loved to farm and enjoyed a huge garden and sharing his produce with friends. He never missed an opportunity to hunt all forms of wildlife from pheasants, ducks, rabbits and squirrel to deer, elk, bear, and moose. He knew every fishing hole in SD as well as prime places to find morel mushrooms, hunting for them every year since the 1930’s. Norm enjoyed spending many summers at Doc’s cabin in Manitoba Canada and kept his motor home busy with other outdoor adventures. A card game of Pitch with friends or a game of Casino with his grandkids was another of Norm’s favorite pastimes.

Though having no biological sons, Norm has been an avid supporter of Miller athletes through the years; cheering on many aspiring boxers, wrestlers, basketball and football players. He seldom missed a Twins game and loved his K-State Wildcats.

He greatly loved this wonderful world and the good Lord’s beautiful scenery and his many blessings.

Memories of Norm will be treasured by his loving wife of 68 years Margueritte “Margo” L. (Dittman) Meriweather; three daughters, Connie Lou (Gary) Palmer of Pierre, SD, H. Kay (Kenneth) Danielson of Billings, MT, and Marcia Lynn (Tim) Potts of Sturgis; 7 grandchildren, Gina Lynn (David) Adrian of Piedmont, SD, Dr. Bradley Lane (Dana) Palmer of Sioux Falls, Dr. Kirk Damien (Molly) Danielson of Olympia, WA, Korey Dean (Teresa) Danielson of Helena, MT, Kari Dee (Jason) LaRue of Los Alamos, NM, Trevor Rockwell Potts and Tera Lynn Potts of Sturgis; ten great grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Doris (Herb) Meriweather; several nieces and nephews and many very special friends.

Norm was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William, Austin, Jack, Lewis, and Herbert; and sisters Gertrude Mills, Hester Weber and Helen Page.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for a Vet Medicine Scholarship that will be available to students graduated from the Miller area or a gift to the Courtyard Villa Assisted Living Center.
