William "Bill" Mark Rensch
Feb 18 1925 - Oct 15 2008

William Mark Rensch died peacefully on October 15, 2008, after a long, exciting, passionate, extreme, and productive life.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City with Sister Susan Pohl officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at Black Hills National cemetery.

He was born February 18, 1925, to Harold and Greta Rensch in Madison, South Dakota. He had the good fortune to be blessed with wonderful brothers and sisters, a warm and loving family, and a mother who was an angel in his eyes. The family moved to Sioux City, Iowa, in the mid 1930’s, and Billy, as he was then known, attended Trinity High School, lettering in football, being named All-City left end, and excelling in other sports.

Most notably, however, was his skillful and talented boxing. He began training at the police gym in Sioux City, Iowa, as a teenager, won the lightweight Golden Gloves title for the state of Iowa in 1942, took the welterweight crown in 1943 and the Light Heavyweight Crown in 1946. While Bill Rensch competed on the Navy Boxing Team, Tommy Freeman, the former welterweight champion of the world, said, That boy has one of the most dangerous right hands I have seen in 40 years of fighting. Bill also fought 10 professional fights.

Bill served in the United States Navy during World War II, as a tail gunner on a PBY Mariner. Both of his beloved brothers were WWII pilots, Patrick Rensch, a bomber pilot, Richard Rensch, a fighter pilot who gave his life in the war. After the war, Bill attended the University of South Dakota School Of Law, attaining his law degree in 1950.

Bill married his first wife Betty (Ege), moved to Rapid City, South Dakota and started a law practice. Of the union with Betty he had eight children listed hereafter with their spouses: Elizabeth (Ray) Strand, Stephanie (Joe) Audino, Patrick (Diane) Rensch, James (Linda) Rensch, Christina (Chris) Lee, Thomas (Tammy) Rensch, Scott Rensch, and Sheila Alexopoulos.

In 1962, Bill married Phyllis (Feyereisen). They had four children: Todd Rensch, deceased, Timothy (Kim) Rensch, Melissa (Pat) Wood, and William (Lisa) Rensch.

Throughout the 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s Bill was always in court, trying cases, personal injury, criminal, and everything in between. He tried hundreds of jury trials. He was well known for his self-deprecating style, pleasant demeanor in the courtroom, ability to take a witness and turn him inside out, and an uncanny knack to speak directly to the heart of jurors. He was not only an excellent criminal lawyer, but a dangerous plaintiff’s attorney. Bill was awarded the 50-year plaque by the State Bar of South Dakota in recognition of his practice of law for half a century.

Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, gambling in Las Vegas, happy hours, many friends, boats and the thrill of the chase. He often said he wished he would have done some things differently, but in the end he was able to show through his smiles, his happy words, and a child-like twinkle in his eye, he loved all of his children. Bill was also an avid pilot, a chess player, a boxing coach, referee, and enthusiast, and a man of powerful philosophies. And he loved his dogs, seven Corgies, and would pout for a day if he thought they were mistreated.

Bill is survived by his present wife, Mary (Williams) Rensch, and her extended family, by his children, his sister Sheila Gottron, of San Juan Capistrano, California, his sister Punky Hustead of Wall, South Dakota, 25 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his mother, father, his brothers, one child, one grandchild.

Special thanks to Mary Rensch and her son Ronald Williams for the loving and sincere care they gave Bill in his last years. Ronald was like a son to Bill. Their love, care, help and support made Bill’s final days not only tolerable, but pleasant. Goodbye beloved father,
