Robert LeRoy "Bob" Wessel Jr.
May 09 1959 - Apr 30 2009

Robert LeRoy Wessel Jr. was born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota. He passed away unexpectedly at Rapid City Regional Hospital of a brain aneurism on April 30, 2009. He entered the world on May 9, 1959, to the joy of his parents and three older sisters. They had little Bobby’s chaps and holsters ready and his sisters enjoyed dressing their little brother in scarves and skirts whenever they could. Bobby grew up with a love of sports which his mom and dad passionately encouraged. His mom literally broke her car horn at a baseball game in her enthusiastic cheering on of little Bobby. Bobby joined his dad in the family business and began shining shoes at Bob’s Shoe Repair at the tender age of eight. He spent many nights after school and on weekends at the shop. He jokingly would say that he never got to watch Saturday cartoons like the other kids. Bobby’s favorite pastime as a child was going to Sheridan Lake where the family spent weekends at their trailer and enjoyed boating. He continued his love of the lake all of his life and has been a co-owner of Blue Wing Recreation at Sheridan Lake where he has many weekend friends.

Bob was a devoted family man who put his wife and children first in all he did.

Bob married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Lori Kenner, on April 20, 1979.

They recently celebrated 30 years of marriage. They loved hiking Harney Peak with their dogs and later with their young children.

They spent weekends boating which continued as a memorable family outing on the warm summer weekends.

Bob and Lori were blessed with the arrival of three children; two beautiful daughters; Bre and Stevie and one handsome son; Bobby.

Bob took every opportunity to be part of his children’s lives. He was versed in throwing softballs, footballs, baseballs, and basketballs for hours in the backyard with his three children and attended every activity possible including dance recitals, basketball, softball, volleyball, and football games, along with Jujitsu. One of Bob’s favorite pastimes was sharing with all who would listen about the many academic and athletic accomplishments of his kids who truly were the joy of his life.

Bob’s work ethic was known by all. Bob continued working at the family business after the untimely death of his father when Bob was only 16 years old.

Bob and his wife, Lori, officially took over the business upon their marriage and have worked side by side for the past thirty years. He never missed a day of work and if there was extra work to be done, he could be found at the shoe shop in the early dawn hours, late evenings or weekends. He jokingly told his wife Lori, “If I called in sick, no one would answer”. He also recognized that the shop could not run without the efforts of his hard-working employees whom he greatly appreciated. He was a master craftsman of his trade who was meticulous about the quality of his work and took immense pride in every thing he did. At work, he was known as Dr. Bob or Shoe-Shine Bob. He always kept his sense of humor and a smile—one of his favorite signs was “We’re open when I get here, closed when I leave, I own this business and often it’s true, I ponder the question of what owns who.”

Bob loved his many friends and was always surrounded by them. He knew how to have fun and a testament to the lives he touched was evident in that his friends came from every walk of life and he loved them all. He will be remembered by his friends in the Texas Street Hereford Society and will be forever missed by his life-long best friend, Ed Rypkema. Lori always jokingly said that Bob was married twice because he and Ed loved and fought like a married coupled and always came out smiling at the end of the day. Bob had a way of fitting in anywhere and he always made everyone feel at home. He had compassion and would give the shirt off his back to help a friend in need. He was never too busy to offer a hand to help. He was an organ donor and over 50 people were helped medically from his donations upon his death.

Bob was involved in many organizations including the Shrine Club which he devoted 18 years to, past member of the Jesters, past member of the Elks Lodge 1187, the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce and a long-term guest of the Custer Trail Riders where he was known as “Walker” since he was always telling his horse to walk. He loved hunting, boating, fishing, four-wheeling, and anything else that would take him into the Black Hills. He always had his camera with him for a ‘Kodak moment’. He always looked forward to his family’s Christmas tree hunting expeditions.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Lori, two daughters, Bre, 21, and Stevie, 18, and one son, Bobby, 15, all of Rapid City; three sisters, Janet Walters (Ken) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Linda Evensen (Lee) of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, and Robin Berg of Fort Collins, Colorado, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob Wessel Sr., and Mary (Bruns) Wessel, along with aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Sunday from 3pm to 5pm with a public prayer service at 5pm, and then at the services for one hour before.

Services are set for 11:00am, Mon., May 4, 2009 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Theatre in Rapid City, with Bob’s uncle, Rev. Glen Wessel officiating. Interment at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City will follow a reception at the civic center.
