Olga G. Kapp
May 27 1932 - Apr 07 2010

Olga G. Kapp passed away unexpectedly at her home in Rapid City on Wed., April 7, 2010. She was born Olga Geneva Olson to Ole and Gina (Arneson) Olson in Stutsman County, North Dakota, on May 27, 1932. She attended school in Medina, graduating from high school in 1951. She worked as a telephone operator in Medina.

She married David Kapp on July 12, 1952, and they moved to Bismarck, North Dakota. She continued working as an operator until the birth of their first daughter, Karen Ann in 1954. They managed a farm for part of the time they were still in North Dakota. Olga bottle fed many lambs and drew great satisfaction from caring for animals.

They moved to Rapid City in 1957 to follow Dave’s employment and have lived here ever since. Another daughter, Donna Kay, was born in 1959 to complete the family. Olga was a devoted mother and wife, and she loved spending time with both of her daughters. Later in life, she partnered with her husband to care for the park shelters and public enjoyment areas of Rapid City, as seasonal workers for the Rapid City Parks Department.

Olga loved music, playing the piano and accordion by ear, as well as the autoharp. She adored watching the Atlanta Braves on TV, and was very much looking forward to following them this season. She always had her nose in a puzzle book, and she enjoyed watching her favorite TV shows, Days of Our Lives and Wheel of Fortune.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents, three brothers—Edwin, Alfred and Sever—a sister, and two stillborn brothers. Grateful for having shared in Olga’s life, she is survived by her daughter, Karen (David) Goldammer of Black Hawk, and Donna (Gary Hascal) of Dallas, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 14 from 4:30pm to 7 pm and one hour prior to the funeral service. The funeral will be held at Kirk Funeral Home on Thursday, April 15 at 10 am, with Pastor Eric Grinager officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park.

Vern Edward Powell

Vern Edward Powell, 88, of New Underwood, died on Wed., April 7, 2010 at a local nursing home in Rapid City.

Vern was born Dec. 15, 1921 in Rapid City to Joshua D. and Ida M. (Stover) Powell. He graduated from New Underwood High School in 1940 and married Florabelle Mae Furrow on June 3, 1942 also in Rapid City. Vern and his new wife then took residence on the ranch just southwest of New Underwood where they lived and raised their family.

He was a member of Rapid Valley United Methodist Church, the Lions Club (30 year pin), West River Electric Board of Directors (12 years), 33 years combined service on the church boards at Caputa and later in New Underwood, a member of the Rural Pennington County Tax Payer Association, local Dawkins School Board, church counselor for Methodist Youth Fellowship group, served on the building committee for the Walt Taylor 4-H Building on the Rapid City fairgrounds, and was awarded District Rangeman of the year in 1991.

Vern along with his wife Florabelle dedicated many years assisting the local area 4-H and Methodist Youth groups. He was a well known commercial haymaker throughout the South Dakota area and raised beef cattle on the ranch until his more recent years. Vern enjoyed visiting with people and making new friends. Vern enjoyed hunting and was a deer hunting guide at his brother’s deer hunting camp near Hill City for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Florabelle Powell of New Underwood; his daughter, Roberta Powell of Seattle, Wash.; his son, Gary and wife Mirsada Powell of Sarajevo, Bosnia; son-in-law Bryce Sowards of Rapid City; five grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, numerous relatives, friends and acquaintances throughout the area.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Darlene Sowards.

Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Tues., Apr. 13, 2010 from 5pm to 7pm and at the church for one hour before services.

Services are set for 2:00pm Wed., Apr. 14, 2010 at Rapid Valley United Methodist Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Linda Baldock officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View cemetery in Rapid City.

A memorial has been established to Rapid Valley United Methodist Church.

Randall L. Sexton
Jan 17 1958 - Feb 25 2010

The Lord called one of his children, Randall Lee Sexton, home on Thursday, February 25, 2010.

Randall was born January 17, 1958 in Deadwood to Donald D. and Betty (Prokop) Sexton. He attended the Lead schools graduating with the class of 1977. He attended Western Technical Trade School in Sidney, NE for heavy equipment. Randall served in the U.S. Navy for two years as a Boiler Technician.

Randall worked different jobs in many places, including Wyoming, Alaska, Ohio, Arizona and the last nine years in Rapid City. He was involved with the Big Brothers/ Big Sisters organization while living in Arizona. He enjoyed fishing, ice fishing, the outdoors and especially the fall of the year. For several years he enjoyed making sleds out of cardboard boxes and racing them at Deer Mountain. Randall was a member of Canyon Lake United Methodist Church in Rapid City. He was a van driver and picked up the elderly to bring them to church. Randall was active with the youth group for a time and helped with Sunday school and also drove for the youth groups when they went on group activities. He was always ready to help unload the semi truck of pumpkins for the youth project.

He is survived by his father, Donald Sexton of Spearfish, his mother, Betty Sexton-Bender and her husband Harold of Lead, his sister, Teresa Finger and her husband Kevin of Chanhassen, MN, step brother, Robert Bender of Lead, many uncles, aunts, cousins and his special friends, Daryle and Karyan Mergan of Colorado and Shannon Thornburg of Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Myron, two sisters, Renee and Connie and his grandparents, George and Bessie Sexton and Elmer and Alberta Prokop.

Randall was a very loving, caring, compassionate, considerate person. He will be sadly missed by his family.

A memorial service will be at 10am on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church (3500 Canyon Lake Drive) in Rapid City with Pastor DeAnn Eidem officiating.

Thomas James Douglas

Thomas James Douglas, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Tom was born January 19, 1945 to Thomas P. Douglas and Helen (Bonamie) Douglas in Pierre, South Dakota. He grew up in Pierre and graduated from Riggs High School in 1963. He later attended school for diesel mechanics. He was a lifelong mechanic and loved restoring classic cars. He was an avid racecar fan and traveled often to different events whenever possible.

For most of Tom’s adult life he was employed in the tire business. He worked in all positions for the business and retired as a sales executive from J.W. Brewer in 2005. After retiring he formed is own business (Douglas Auto) in Arvada, Colorado. Tom’s passions included cooking, traveling, rock & roll and spending time with family and numerous friends. He especially enjoyed his seven granddaughters, Tiffany Lyn Douglas, Tia Jean Douglas, Nikita Rae Douglas, Trinny Lynn Douglas, Sasha Roz Douglas, Taylor Jill Douglas and Jess Nicole Douglas.

He married Rosalyn Klemann and resided in Pierre, Ft. Pierre and Rapid City. To this union three sons were born, Marty R. Douglas, Tony J. Douglas and Triny L. Douglas.

He married Claudia Coon on August 13, 1980 at the StavKirk Chapel in Rapid City, SD. They resided in Rapid City, Casper, WY, and Arvada, CO. In 2008 Tom and Claudia relocated to their retirement home south of Rapid City near Rockerville.

Tom is survived by his wife, Claudia Douglas of Rapid City; two sons, Tony Douglas of Denver, Colo., Triny Douglas of Rapid City; four brothers, Kelly Douglas of Rapid City, Gerald Douglas of Gardner, MA, Paul Douglas of Rapid City, Dennis Douglas of Windsor, Colo.; two sisters, Phyllis Lindbloom of Sioux Falls, Gail Jacobson of Ft. Pierre; seven granddaughters; numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Marty Douglas, his grandparents, Carl and Mary Douglas, his parents, Thomas and Helen Douglas, a brother, Donald Douglas, and a sister Linda (Douglas) Davis.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Kirk Funeral Home from 5-7 with a 7 pm prayer service.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 1, 2010 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of the Black Hills Church in Piedmont with Father Mark McCormick as celebrant. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary cemetery in Rapid City.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to Habitat for Humanity and Christian Life Ministries.

Robin R. Garrett
Jul 07 1952 - Feb 23 2010

Robin R. Garrett, 57, New Underwood, passed away on February 23, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Robin enjoyed time with family and friends, playing cards, and going on outings. She has owned and operated Garrett Fencing Inc. since 2003. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She will be missed by her family.

She is survived by her husband David L. Garrett of New Underwood, her daughter Patsy (Tom) Tines of Wasta, Justin (Kathy) Garrett of New Underwood, 4 grandsons: Gage & Gunner Garrett, and Colton & Traeton Tines, her mother Jean Colvin or Rapid City, and one sister Roxy (Tim) Dix of Wasta.

She is preceded in death by her father Pat C. Colvin.

As per Robin’s wishes, she will be cremated and no services will be held.

Stephen M. Wheaton

Stephen M. Wheaton, 69, of Keystone died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Steve was born in North Platte, NE to Dr. Richard D. Wheaton and Beth Amundson Wheaton on November 15, 1940. He lived most of his early life in Helena, MT. Steve received a B.S. degree from Montana State University and an M.S. degree from the University of Houston, both in physics. He worked in oil and gas exploration in Texas and later was with the Department of the Navy on the Trident Submarine program in California.

He and his wife, Pat, retired to the Black Hills ten years ago. Steve was a Master Mason and was active in the Mt. Aetna Lodge in Keystone. He held an amateur radio Extra Class license with the call sign KM5A. Steve shared his computer skills with neighbors and the staff and patrons of the Keystone Town Library.

Survivors include his wife, Pat Wheaton, Keystone; his son, Harold E. Wheaton, Melbourne, FL; and a brother, Richard D. Wheaton Jr., Missoula, MT.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 28, at 2:00 p.m. at the Keystone UCC Church with the Rev. Charles R. Landon, Jr. officiating.

Memorials may be sent to the Black Hills Children’s Home.

Betty Lou Croyle
Mar 19 1937 - Mar 02 2010

Betty Lou Croyle, 72, died March 2, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Betty was born at home in Portage, PA on March 19, 1937 the 8th child of 13 born to James Blair and Lavada (Over) Stombaugh. Betty met Ron Croyle at a dance in Portage during her senior year of high school and they later married on April 9, 1956, the marriage lasted 52 years ending with Ron’s death in January 2009, she joined him on what would have been Ron’s 73rd birthday.

Betty was the most amazing strong mother her six children could ever be blessed with, even through years of declining health, she was our rock.

Betty is survived by her children: Rondi (Mark) Murphy, John (Landy) Croyle, Jim (Patty) Croyle all of Rapid City, Ruth Croyle of Box Elder, and Becky (Bryce) Beachem of Hill City; twenty-three grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; sisters, Wilda Servinsky and Ramona Sweeney of PA, Joan Reese of VA, and Mary Lee Rzeszut of Ohio; brothers, Cliff Stombaugh and Dennis Stombaugh of PA, Ted Stombaugh of Ohio, and Kenneth Stombaugh of VA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ron; son, Jeffrey Sr.; granddaughters, Heather and Raven; grandson, Freedom; brothers, Bill, Jack, and Jimmy; and sister, Cathrine.

Following Betty’s wishes her body has been cremated.

Memorial services will be on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 10:00 am at the Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City with Rev. Lloyd Edwards officiating.

Katherine G. White
Oct 29 1921 - Mar 01 2010

Katherine G. White, 88, Fairburn, peacefully passed away at the Rapid City Regional Hospice House on Monday, March 1, 2010.

She is survived by one son: Leslie (AlMarie) White, Black Hawk, three daughters: DeElda (Ted) Williams, Fairburn, Delia (Dean) Johnson, Fairburn, Donna Degnan, Buffalo Gap; special friends Ruth and Vern Bradford; sisters Dorothy Woessner, Betty Downen, Barbara Shindelbower; brother Harley Kennedy; 9 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a baby daughter, 3 siblings, one son-in-law, and one great-grandchild.

A memorial has been established to the Rapid City Regional Hospice of the Hills, 224 Elk Street, Rapid City, SD 57701.

Memorial services will be held at Fairburn United Methodist Church on Friday, March 5 at 11:00am with Rev. John McKnight officiating. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow in the church basement. As per Katherine’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Mark R. Hakl
Oct 16 1956 - Feb 26 2010

Mark Hakl, 53, Rapid City, peacefully passed away at Rapid City Regional Hospice House on Friday, February 26, 2010.

Survivors include his father Richard; his mother Delores; two brothers, Kim Hakl, Lake Andes, and Bob Hakl, Gillette, Wyo.; two sisters, Mary Beth, Mesa, Ariz., and Judy Hakl, Gillette; and various nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents.

A memorial visitation will be at 1pm Tuesday, March 2 at Kirk Funeral Home. A memorial service will then follow at 2pm with Fr. Bill Zandri officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Lake Andes cemetery.

Leonard R. "Butch" Curington
Dec 08 1939 - Feb 26 2010

Leonard R. Curington, age 70, of Rapid City, died on Thursday, February 25, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He entered the US Air Force in 1958 and honorably served for 23 years and 8 months. Leonard retired from active duty in 1981.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Small, Rapid City, one son, Billy Curington, Rapid City, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 10:00 am at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City with Fr. Bill Zandri presiding. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis with military honors performed by the Ellsworth AFB Honor Guard.
