Dorothy A. "Dusty" Borelson
May 04 1931 - Feb 25 2010

Dorothy “Dusty” Borelson, 78, of rural Rapid City passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2010 in the care of the Rapid City Regional Hospice House. She was born May 4, 1931 to Tobias and Christina (Matthews) Borelson in New Underwood and lived there until her teens. The family moved to their Rapid City area ranch after the death of her sister Lorraine in a tractor accident.

Dorothy became her father’s “hired man” after graduating from high school. She was always there to help with the haying and threshing. A paint brush and hammer were familiar tools to Dorothy as she and her father earned extra money working as contractors. Dorothy saved her money for several trips to Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry.

A life time lover of music, Dorothy accumulated a collection of over 50, 000 Country Western songs which she recently donated to the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming. Along with the music, Dorothy obtained autographed photographs of her favorite musicians. She also collected the star’s autographs on quilt pieces which she embroidered and sewed into a beautiful quilt. She recently donated this collection to the Pearl Hotel Museum in Kadoka, South Dakota.

She was the president of the Buddy Meredith and Polly Johnson fan club’s for 21 years. She also published the newsletter for both.

During her life time Dorothy made over 1800 quilts, most of which were donated to local charities. Every one of those quilts was sewn on her treadle sewing machine and tied or quilted by hand. On warm sunny days you could find Dorothy in her garage tying quilts.

In 1995 Dorothy was chosen by the Catalyst Club to receive the Good Neighbor Award for which she received a carved wooden bust of herself. In November of 2002 she was named Rapid City’s Good Citizen. She was a founding and current member of the Rapid City Quilter’s Guild. In addition, Dorothy found time to volunteer as a board member of the North Elk Fire Protection District.

In recent years Dorothy became a care giver. After the passing of her mother, she assumed the responsibility of caring for her disabled sister. How wonderful it was that Carol was able to be cared for by her loving family.

Preceding her in death were Dorothy’s older sister Lorraine, her father Tobias and mother Christina. She is survived by her sister Carol, over 100 pen pals and many local friends.

Funeral services will be at 11am on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the Atonement Lutheran Church in Rapid City with Rev. Jon Mapa officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at the New Underwood cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Atonement Lutheran Church.

Wesley Arnold "Arnie" Schneider
Sep 03 1923 - Jul 09 2009

God called his faithful servant Wesley Arnold “Arnie” Schneider to His Heavenly home. Arnie was born in Custer, South Dakota on September 3, 1923 to Wesley N. and Lessie (Parker) Schneider, and proudly called Custer home for the next 85 plus years, before moving to Rapid City in February, 2009 due to health concerns. He passed away with his loved ones at his side at the Rapid City Regional Hospice House on Thurs., July 9, 2009.

Arnie spent his young years doing odd jobs around Custer and keeping up with many chores around the family home, which was shared with his sister, Evelyn, and their grandparents.

Raised with a love of God, family and country, it was no surprise that Arnie left his hometown in January, 1943 to report to the Naval Training Center in Farragut, Idaho. Arnie served his country honorably during World War II as a Boatswains Mate on board the U.S.S. LST-201 and the U.S.S. Pontus serving PT boats and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with three stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two stars before returning from the south Pacific onboard the U.S.S. Doyen APA-1 with liberated POW’s from Battan. Arnie returned to Custer after being honorably discharged in January 1946.

After returning to Custer, Arnie found his best friend and the love of his life there, Alberta “Bert” Libolt. Arnie and Bert were married on November 12, 1946, and on September 2, 1947 they welcomed son Jim to the family – just a bit early to be a “true” birthday present. Son Wayne heralded the coming of sunny days when he joined the family on May 3, 1950. On November 7, 1952, Arnie and Bert called their family complete with the birth of daughter Marcia.

Arnie supported his family by working in the timber industry for many years, becoming Custer’s first certified lumber grader. He logged along side his dad for a time before going to work at Winters Sawmill. Arnie was sawyer at the Mountain Sawmill, owned by Korczak Ziolkowski, and at O’Connor Lumber Company, before running the planer at Custer Lumber Company. In 1983, Arnie went to work for the U.S. Forest Service-Black Hills National Forest, retiring on December 31, 1989.

Years of working didn’t prepare Arnie to be idle in retirement so he looked for a hobby to keep himself busy. Soon he was building picture frames, sharpening saws and mower blades, and being asked if he could fix a vast array of small engines. Arnie soon had a full-time hobby that could have easily kept two or more people busy. For the next 20 years, Arnie repaired, with few exceptions, virtually every engine he was presented, even after suffering a serious injury caused by the blades of one angry mower.

Arnie was a Charter and Life member of the Kenneth Kuper Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3442. He served in many positions, including Commander, and always participated in events recognizing veterans and their service to the country he loved. Arnie was especially pleased when Custer School District decided to hold an event each Veterans Day to honor our veterans, fallen soldiers, prisoners of war, missing in action, and active duty service personnel. He was humbled when in 2000 the School presented him with an honorary diploma to recognize his choice to serve his country prior to completing his education.

Always ready to give to his community, Arnie served on the Custer Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years. He was a charter member of the Custer Alano Society. He was also a Life member of the Custer County Historical Society, Life member of the Custer Senior Citizens Center, Custer Lutheran Fellowship and The PT Boat Sailors Association.

Arnie was preceded in death by his parents Wesley and Lessie Schneider, his sister Evelyn Brauner, and a grandson, Mike Schneider.

Grateful and blessed to have been part of his life are his wife of 62+ years Bert; sons and daughters-in-law Jim and Monica Schneider (Rapid City, SD) and Wayne and Gayle Schneider (Henderson, NV); daughter, Marcia Eisenbraun (Arvada, CO); granddaughters Brenda (Schneider) Luedtke (Rapid City, SD), Wendy Eisenbraun (Wall, SD), and Becky Eisenbraun (Rapid City, SD); grandsons Jorin Eisenbraun (Custer, SD) and Matt Schneider (Westminster, CO); great-grandson Michael Schneider (Rapid City, SD); great-great-granddaughter Ashlyne (Rapid City, SD); extended family and a lifetime of friends.

Family and friends will gather at Custer Lutheran Fellowship 3 miles east of Custer at 10:00am on Mon., July 13, 2009 for a memorial service to honor Arnie, a quiet man with a warm smile and twinkling blue eyes, who treated everyone with dignity and respect, who was known and loved by many, and who was respected by all who knew him.

A memorial has been established to Hospice House in Rapid City and Custer Lutheran Fellowship Church.

Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of the arrangements.
