Zeta H. Diede-Schmidt

Zeta Henrietta King, daughter of Henry and Katherine (Crosley) King was born Tuesday, November 21, 1916 in Springfield, South Dakota. Zeta attended school in Springfield, Avon and Scotland schools and graduated from Scotland High School in 1934. After the death of Zeta’s father, her mother, sister and five brothers moved to the west coast while Zeta remained in Scotland. In 1935, she married Harold “Dutch” Diede and to this union one son, Don, was born. While living in Scotland, Zeta was employed by Max’s Drug Store, Gemar’s Market and was a bookkeeper for the Scotland Creamery. In 1955, the family moved to Kaylor where Dutch was employed as a depot agent for the railroad and Zeta was employed by Farmer’s State Bank of Kaylor. She retired in 1978 after 24 years of service. Her husband died in March of 1979 and her son, Don, died in November of 1979 at the age of 43. Zeta then moved back to Scotland and spent much of her time traveling to visit her west coast family. She married Adam Schmidt, Jr. and lived in California for a short time before moving back to Scotland, where they purchased a home. Zeta and Adam attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Scotland and were active members of that parish. Upon Adam’s death, Zeta returned to the United Methodist Church in Scotland where she had attended at an earlier time. She was an active member of the UMW and served on the church council. Zeta was also a past Worthy Matron of the Augusta Chapter of the Eastern Star. Zeta loved to read and was an avid bowler, bowling on leagues in Scotland, Tripp, and Parkston. At the age of 94, after 50 years of bowling she ended her bowling career. She enjoyed her pinochle foursome and at the age of 84 learned and enjoyed the game of bridge. Her family was always the center of her life and she loved them very much. Zeta passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Oakview Terrace in Freeman, South Dakota, having attained the age of 95 years, 2 months, and 17 days.

Zeta is survived by her loving daughter-in-law, Laverne Diede of Freeman; granddaughter Kim (Gregg) Uecker of Freeman and grandson Cory Diede of Spearfish; five great-grandsons: Tyler, Travis and Tanner Uecker of Freeman and Baker and Devin Diede of Spearfish. She is also survived by her step-daughter, Mary Lynn (Ray) Marchi of New Mexico, step-son-in-law Chris (Rose Marie) Clarke of Louisiana; three step-granddaughters: Cindy Pendergraft Bromberg, Jennifer Clarke and Mildred Sutton; two step-grandsons: Ed Matthews and Andrew Clarke; seven step-great-grandchildren: Breanne Pendergraft Jones, Aaron Clarke, Michael and Cori Beth Sutton, Dustin Casey, Cierra Clyde and Brayden Clarke; and a sister-in-law, Agnes Ireland of Scotland.

In addition to her parents, Henry and Katherine King, she was preceded in death by both husbands and her son, Don, five brothers, one sister, one step-granddaughter and one step grandson.

Adeline Rose Pesek was born on Monday, August 19, 1918 in the Lakeport area near Yankton. She was the second of four children born to Fred and Rose (Nedved) Hejl. After attending Wilson School District #54 through the 8th grade, she spent some time working away from home doing domestic work. On February 12, 1947, she was united in marriage to Edward Joseph Pesek at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Lesterville. They began their farming career on a rented farm near her in-laws. Three daughters were born during this time. In 1961, they purchased a farm near Tyndall and continued farming there until they retired and purchased a home in Tyndall in 1981. During their retirement, they did a lot of traveling until they were no longer able to due to health issues.

Adeline will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother. She worked side by side with Edward in their livestock and crop operation. She also raised poultry, vegetables and canned. This is how she will be remembered by everyone who knew her. She was especially proud of her two sets of twin great-grandchildren. Adeline passed away on Friday, February 3, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society of Tyndall at the age of 93 years, 5 months and 15 days.

Thankful for having shared her life are her husband of 64 years, Edward, of Tyndall; three daughters: Florence and husband Kenneth Powers of Avon, Elaine and husband Thomas Jaeger of Platte, and Joyce and husband Kenneth Diediker of Dixon, Nebraska; six grandchildren: Stacey Powers and Julie of Avon, Melissa (Powers) and Matt DePauw of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jackie (Jaeger) and Steve Thomson of Sioux Falls, Carla (Jaeger) and Gerald Eppel of Mitchell, Sam Jaeger of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Denise (Diediker) and Joe Dangberg of Omaha, Nebraska; nine great-grandchildren: Andrew, Jackson and twins Hayden and Hanna Powers, Max and twins Vanessa and Felicity Thomson, and Luke and Emma Eppel; two brothers: Wesley Hejl of Sioux Falls and Joseph and wife Dorothy Hejl of Lesterville; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Rose Hejl, a brother, Fred, and his wife, Evelyn.

Marilyn R. Behl was born on Tuesday, June 30, 1925 near Scotland, South Dakota to Maynard and Minnie (Reiking) Brooks. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Scotland High School in 1942. After high school, she began working at Farmer’s and Merchants State Bank of Scotland and worked for the bank for 70 years. Marilyn was united in marriage to Darwin “Bud” Behl on Sunday, June 9, 1946 in a candlelight service at the Scotland Methodist Church. She loved camping with family and friends. In the winter, Marilyn and Bud would go dancing and in the summer they went fishing. Family was very important to Marilyn, and she treasured the gatherings that were spent celebrating holidays and birthdays. She was a wonderful cook and her specialties included lasagna, Hershey bar dessert, apple pie and rhubarb bread. She enjoyed playing “500” with her card group. Marilyn surrounded herself with flowers, both around her house and in her garden. Marilyn served on the Board of Directors of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Scotland for 42 years. Marilyn served on the Board of Directors of the Scotland Holding Company for 29 years. Over the past 32 years of working for the bank, Marilyn sent hundreds of cards and flowers to people for every occasion. When her health allowed, she was very active in the Methodist Church, serving as Treasurer, on the Audit Committee, and the Ladies’ Guild. She was an active member of the Civic Club and the Landmann-Jungman Hospital Auxillary. Marilyn passed away on Monday, January 30, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland at the age of 86 years and 7 months.

Grateful for having shared Marilyn’s life are her husband Bud, of Scotland; four children: Katherine “Kathy” (Leonard) Jerke of Madison, Donna (Victor) Bush of Olivet, Nancy (Larry) Auch of Scotland, and Dick (Peg) Behl of Scotland; eleven grandchildren: Melissa, Jason, Brian, Lisa, Jared, Stacy, Erin, Lindsay, Michelle, Jennifer, and Michael; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Maynard and Minnie Brooks, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Jerke; two sisters, Bernice Hesla and Betty Paulson; and one brother, Gerald Brooks

Delphine Kathryn Schmidt was born on Friday, March 2, 1934 on a farm near Scotland, the sixth daughter born to John and Katie (Mehrer) Weidenbach. She graduated from Scotland High School in 1952, after which she received her teaching certificate and taught school for one year and worked as a telephone operator. On August 23, 1955, she married her high school sweetheart, Donald Schmidt. They moved to California while Don was stationed there with the U.S. Army. After spending seven years living in Arizona, they returned to the Scotland area and farmed for 23 years. They retired in 1995, and a highlight of their retirement was a 50th wedding anniversary trip with her entire family to Branson, Missouri in 2005. Delphine was a very devoted Catholic and lived her life for her faith and her family. She was a member of St. George Altar Society and the National Catholic Society of Foresters and spent much time volunteering at the church. She also donated her time and talents to the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland and the National Historical Society. She was also a member of the LEE Committee, the Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Scotland Red Hat Society. Her greatest joys were living to see her grandson get married and the birth of her first great-grandson. Delphine passed away on Friday, January 27, 2012 at her residence in Scotland after a courageous bout with cancer at the age of 77 years, 10 months, and 25 days.

Delphine’s memory will be cherished by her husband of 56 years, Donald, of Scotland; four children: Brian Schmidt of Phoenix, Arizona, Tim Schmidt of Chamberlain, Susan (Marc) Bies of Yankton and Mary (Scott) Novak of O’Neill, Nebraska; eight grandchildren: Rebecca Schmidt, Nicole Schmidt, Joshua (Lia) Bies, Betsy Bies, Jacob Bies, Sarah Novak, Tony (Anna) Novak, and Zachary Novak; one great-grandson, Ryder Novak; and one sister, Adeline (Neil) Bjorum of Holland, Michigan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Katie Weidenbach, and four sisters: Alta Orth, Inez Weidenbach, Luella Gall and Irene Gall.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Scotland Library, which will be used to purchase books for the visually impaired.

Esther Amalia (Dobler) Weisser was born on Monday, August 9, 1926, on the family farm in Hutchinson County near Tripp to Edward and Emilia (Bietz) Dobler. She attended country grade school and one year of high school in Tripp. She was baptized in Dennewitz Lutheran Church by Rev. Goeken and confirmed after due instruction by Rev. J. Schmitt in Dennewitz Church. She married Leo Weisser on January 19, 1947 in Dennewitz Church by Rev. J. Schmitt. They farmed four miles east and three miles north of Tripp until 1975. After Leo was disabled, they moved into Tripp. Esther worked various jobs including nurse’s aide, receptionist at a chiropractor’s office, a clerk at Friederich’s Grocery and Dairy Mart, cut meat at Spomer’s Locker, and later worked at Raven’s in Parkston for 13 years, from which she retired. She moved to Mitchell, where she worked at the Corn Palace Motel for 9 years as a desk clerk. Esther also volunteered at L.B. Williams Elementary School. Esther passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 12 days.

Esther is survived by four children: Lynnetta (Al) Dinehart of Rapid City, Robert (Kathy) Weisser of Sioux Falls, Kay (David) Farrar of Gayville and Jane (Ron) Dahme of Mitchell; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, her parents, and a sister, Violet.
