Darlene Fayola Roth was born on February 4, 1936 in Charles Mix County to Albert and Lenora (Schnabel) Bittermann. She attended the Klein Country School. Darlene was united in marriage to Clarence Roth on April 5, 1956. They farmed southwest of Tripp and moved to Tripp in 1968. Darlene was employed at Cookie’s Bar for several years and she also enjoyed doing crafts. After her husband’s death in 1998, Darlene made her home at the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp, and it is there that she passed away at the age of 76 years, 1 month and 24 days.

Darlene is survived by her sister, Lavonne and her husband Melvin Konrad of Mitchell; brother Glenn and wife Julie Bittermann of West Bend, Wisconsin; brother-in-law Walt and wife Ella Roth of Tripp; sister-in-law Mildred Roth of Avon; sister-in-law Agnes and husband Marvin Thum of Scotland; brother-in-law Norbert and wife Diana Roth of Yankton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Albert and Lenora Bittermann, Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp.

Age 91

Elsie Permann was born on Thursday, June 17, 1920, at Tripp, South Dakota. She was one of ten children born to Jacob and Kathrine (Mehlhaf) Pietz. She attended country school through the 8th grade. Elsie was united in marriage to Alvin Permann on March 9, 1941 in Tripp. They farmed four miles northwest of Tripp for fifteen years. In 1956, they moved to the Black Hills area, later moving to Belvedere, Illinois in 1966. During those years, she cleaned houses and worked in the laundry at a nursing home. They moved back to Tripp in 1981. Elsie enjoyed quilting and crafts and was a talented gardener of both wonderful vegetables and beautiful flowers. She loved time spent with her family, especially spending Christmases with her grandchildren. In May of 2009, she became a resident of the Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell and was named Resident of the Month in August of 2010. It is there that Elsie passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at the age of 91 years and 9 months.

Elsie is survived by three children: Donna (Vernon) Simmons of Rapid City, Joelene (Frank) Nikkila of Fulton, and Gerald (Bonnie) Permann of Amboy, Illinois; 8 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Leona Pietz of Parkston.

In addition to her parents, Jacob and Kathrine Pietz, Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin, on April 2, 1997; two sons, Darvin Permann in 1943 and Lyle Permann in 1993; one great-grandson, Robert, in 1994; two great-great-granddaughters; five brothers, four sisters, and two half-sisters.

Beverly Jean Ranek

Beverly Jean Ranek was born on Thursday, August 21, 1930 at Tyndall, South Dakota to Karl and Freda (Rueb) Schmoll. She attended Tyndall High School. She began working as a waitress at the Ranek Café, where she met Basil Ranek. They were united in marriage on February 13, 1950 in Tyndall. They owned and operated the café until 1959. She provided childcare in her home for many years. Beverly was a devoted homemaker, and spent her time caring for her husband and children. She was a life-long member of St. Leo Catholic Church and served in the St. Leo Altar Society. Beverly passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society of Tyndall at the age of 81 years, 6 months, and 21 days.

Grateful for having shared Beverly’s life are her three children: Timothy (Dawn) Ranek of Conroe, Texas, Julie Ranek (Roger) Schmidt of Yankton, and Joanie (William) Crews of Tyndall; nine grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Ariel Hood, Samantha Crews, Abigail Crews, Justin Zoburg, Ashley Crespo, Amaris Crespo, Samara Crespo, Brianna Crespo, and Jonathan Kroger; and one great-grandson, Anthony Lopez; a brother, Elmer Schmoll of California; and one sister, Leona (Laddie) Becvar of Tyndall.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil Ranek, in October of 1995, her father, Karl Schmoll, her mother, Freda (Rueb) Schmoll Bren, her step-father, Ed Bren, and three sisters: Marcella Younger, Viola Stemper and Leona Irene Schmoll, in infancy.

Tillie Mary Varilek was born on Sunday, December 2, 1917 in Bon Homme County near Tyndall, South Dakota to Vaclav and Anastasia (Blaha) Plavec. She attended the Stekly School through the 8th grade. Tillie was united in marriage to Frank H. Varilek on June 21, 1938 at Tabor, South Dakota. They farmed until 1964 when they moved to Tyndall. Tillie worked at the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center for one year as a cook, then worked at various jobs at St. Michael’s Hospital for 8½ years. She worked in the cafeteria at the Tyndall School for 9 years and also part-time at the Tyndall Bakery. She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church and the St. Leo Altar Society, the National Catholic Society of Foresters, the Czech Heritage Preservation Society and the Tyndall Senior Citizens. Tillie was devoted to her faith and participated in the St. John Bosco Study Group and the de Colores Cursillo group. She was also a member of the T.O.P.S. Club (later named “Yes, Yes I Can”), St. Michael’s Hospital Auxiliary, the Good Samaritan Guild, and served on the Site Council for the local senior nutrition program. She loved to play cards and enjoyed playing Pinochle with her card club. In her retirement, she was an active senior citizen and loved to take trips and visit family. She had been recognized during Older Americans Month as an “Outstanding Senior Achiever” by the South Dakota Department of Adult Services and Aging.

Tillie passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at St. Michael’s Hospital Avera at the age of 94 years, 3 months and 8 days. She will live on in the hearts of her six sons and two daughters: Francis Varilek and Sally Boyd of Mission Hill, Daniel Varilek of Tyndall, JoAnn (John) Jonas of Yankton, Irene Koranda of Tabor, Thomas (Dina) Varilek of Ankeny, Iowa, David Varilek of Tabor, Charles (Julie) Varilek of Estes Park, Colorado, and Kenneth (Jeanne) Varilek of Springfield; 20 grandchildren and 5 step-grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her parents, Vaclav and Anastasia Plavec, Tillie was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in August of 1985; a daughter, Henrietta, in 1942; a son-in-law, Donald Koranda, in 2008; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank (Anna) Plavec; and three sisters and brothers-in-law: Lillian (Joseph) Varilek, Rose (Henry) Teply, and Helen (Roy) Bower.

Laurie Ann Brunette was born on Thursday, March 30, 1978 in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada to Richard and Catherine (Mack) Brunette. She loved singing and music, and in her younger years loved to rollerskate. She will be remembered as a caring young woman with a big heart who especially loved her three boys. She was baptized on December 5, 1999 at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Tripp. Laurie passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at her residence in Tripp at the age of 34 years, 1 month and 22 days.

Laurie is survived by her fiancé, Lawrence G. Polvorosa of Tripp; three sons: Richard A. Brunette of Tripp, Jacob R. Brunette of Arizona and Kenneth J. Meisenhoelder of Tripp; her parents: Richard and Catherine Brunette of Tripp; a sister, Carolyn Joyce Brunette of Tripp; two nephews, Nicholas and Matthew Brunette of Tripp; a niece, Faith Brunette of Tripp; her maternal grandmothers, Udee Knisley of Tripp and Elaine Mack of Ohio; an aunt, Sherilynn Rodgers of Ohio; an uncle, David K. (Ruth) Mack of West Virginia; and numerous cousins.

Laurie was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Paul and Shirley Brunette, her maternal grandfather, Robert A. Mack, two uncles: David Shirey and Michael Mack, and a cousin, Jacob Mack.

Alice Klemme
Born December 27, 1924

Age 87

Alice was born Saturday, December 27, 1924 to Arthur and Ida (Treick) Klemme. She was baptized on April 1, 1925 at Bethany Reformed Church and was confirmed on July 2, 1939. She grew up on the family farm by Scotland and attended Nellis Country School. She graduated from Scotland High School and Brown Beauty School. Alice owned and operated her own hair salon on Main Street in Scotland for 50 years. She was an avid sports fan, attending nearly all home basketball games. She enjoyed bowling and bowled on a league for many years. Her gardens were simply beautiful, featuring red roses and her yard was nominated as yard of the month. She enjoyed the holidays, being one of the first homes to elaborately decorate her yard for Christmas. She loved her pets. She played a big part in planning and organizing the Scotland All School Reunion. Alice passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland, having attained the age of 87 years, 4 months and 20 days.

Alice is survived by one brother, Paul Pete Klemme: several nieces: Phyllis (Don) Jerke, Vera (Allen) Bierle, Paula (George) Bauder, GayLynn (Ken) Konrad, and Wilma Estes.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, special friend Frank Tuffs, brother Elmer (Ella) Klemme, sisters Ruth Klemme and Lola (Otto) Jenner, sister-in-law Esther Klemme, and nephew Allen Klemme.
