Lynne Susan Gaudreau was born on Sunday, September 21, 1958 at Putnam, Connecticut to Valmore and Dorothy (Bromley) Gaudreau. She graduated from Mission Bay High School in San Diego, California in 1976. She was a flight attendant for PSA and USAir for over ten years. Lynne loved animals and had worked for the San Diego Zoo, Sea World and the Helen Woodward Animal Hospital in San Diego. She especially loved her dog, Bear Dog. After moving to South Dakota, she worked at Casey’s in Springfield, Frank’s Trading Post in Tyndall and the Sportsman’s in Tyndall. Lynne died on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls following injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident near Springfield, South Dakota at the age of 54 years, 3 months and 1 day.

Lynne is survived by one brother, John Gaudreau of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; three sisters: Leslie Richter of Carlsbad, California, Valerie Millsom of Yuma, Arizona, , and Karen (Mike) Winn of San Diego, California; and her beloved friend, Rick Kreber of Springfield.

Lynne was preceded in death by her parents, Valmore and Dorothy Gaudreau.

Elmer Ruben Koth
Born December 5, 1924

Died December 18, 2012
Age 88

Elmer Ruben Koth was born Friday, December 5, 1924 on the family farm northwest of Tripp. He was the fourth of seven children born to Solomon and Anna (Goehring) Koth. He attended a rural Hutchinson County school, Pearly Mound Elementary, and graduated from Tripp High School in 1942.

Following high school, Elmer worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the Army in 1950. He served his country in Korea as a member of Company K, 21st Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, from 1950 to 1952. He rose through the ranks to Sergeant First Class and became a squad leader in late 1951. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement. Upon his return to the area in 1953, he was an active member of Jelkin-Harms American Legion Post #142 in Tripp in 1953, where he served as a rifleman on the firing squad for 57 years.

Elmer returned to help his parents with the family farm. He also worked as a builder for Hanson Silo Company. He retired from farming in 1997 and moved to a home in town. He was a member of the Pilgrim Congregational Church of Tripp, where he served as a deacon for many years. When it was closed, he became a member of Freiden’s Reformed Church of Tripp. Elmer passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Avera St. Benedict Health Center in Parkston at the age of 88 years, 13 days.

Elmer is survived by two sisters: Ruby Hicks and Arvilla Perkinson, both of Tripp; and many nieces and nephews who remember him with love and affection.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Milton Koth and Hubert Koth; and two sisters: LaVerne Bastone and Norma Tatman.

Karen Ann Nelson

Karen Ann (Mack) Nelson was born on Saturday, October 29, 1947 at Watertown, South Dakota to Ralph T. and Eileen (Alcorn) Mack. She spent her early years in Watertown, attended school in Clark through 2nd grade, Webster through the 10th grade and graduated from Yankton High School in 1965. During high school, she spent her summers at the family cottage at Blue Dog Lake and enjoyed fishing and swimming. As a girl, she enjoyed painting paint-by-number pictures and was an avid reader.

Karen attended Northern State College in Aberdeen and earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and her master’s degree in administration. She attended college during the summer with her mother, who was a teacher. Having grown up with this role model, Karen always wanted to be a teacher as well. She lived in Andover while going to Northern State College and was a certified teacher’s aide for first grade in Milbank. Her first teaching job was in Yankton. She lived in Rapid City during the flood. She was later principal at Carthage and taught fifth and sixth grades at Scotland and Lesterville schools. Karen taught school for 29 years in Scotland, retiring in 2008, and enjoyed the time spent with her students over her many years as a teacher, reading specialist and administrator.

Karen married Rick Pierce in December of 1970 in Huron and they had two children: Jeffrey Lee and Julie Ann. She was united in marriage with David Nelson on August 19, 1977 at Carthage and they had a son, Matthew David.

Karen had a deep love of family, especially children. She loved spending time with family and loved every moment spent with her grandchildren. Karen also loved spending time with her nieces and nephews and their children. Karen will always be remembered as “Gram-Gram” by her grandchildren.

Karen enjoyed reading, spending time with friends, bowling on Thursday afternoons and watching movies. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Scotland and also the VFW Post #791 Auxiliary in Yankton.

Especially dear to her were her pets and her horses. She loved raising and watching her horses, going to horse sales and caring for her pets.

Karen passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland at the age of 65 years, 1 month and 12 days.

Left to cherish Karen’s memory are her three children: Jeffrey Pierce of Rapid City, Julie Pierce and fiancé Mike Erickson of Brookings and Matthew (Jenny) Nelson of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren: Matthew, Jacob, Jacie, Justin, Meredith and Evelyn; a sister, Donna (Don) Larson of Milbank; her mother-in-law, Kathleen Nelson of Scotland; a brother-in-law, Jerry (Mary) Nelson of Scotland; three sisters-in-law: Jeanette (John) Lisbeth of Viera, Florida, Marlys (Don) Wasmund of Worthington, Minnesota, and Mary (Rick) Lingberg of Sioux Falls; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Eileen Mack, and her husband, David Nelson in 2003.

Frank Anton Vesely

Frank Anton Vesely was born November 15, 1917 on the family homestead near Pischelville, Knox County, Nebraska to Matej (Mike) and Katie (Lanc) Vesely who had come to the area from Czechoslovakia in 1878 and 1911 respectively. Frank was the third of five sons. He attended elementary school in Knox County District #7. After his school days he hired out as a farmhand on various farms in Nebraska and South Dakota.

In 1941, prior to declaration of World War II, he enlisted in the Army for a one-year tour of duty and was assigned to the 27th and later to the 91st Field Artillery. He was also, briefly, in the Infantry. Three months prior to the end of his enlistment, his discharge was cancelled and he served until October 24, 1945. He served stateside as well as two tours of duty overseas in Scotland, Ireland, England, Italy, Algiers and Austria. He had sailed from New York with 16, 000 other servicemen on the Queen Mary.

On December 4, 1944 while home on furlough he married Barbara Ann (Betty) Suchy at O'Neill, NE. To the union was born one daughter, Cynthia Ann. They made their home in Tabor, SD. Betty died after an extended illness on February 6, 1958.

After his discharge from the Army as a PFC in 1945 he worked at the South Dakota State Hospital Farm near Yankton, then for Koranda Well Drilling Co. of Tabor, and finally, for the Bon Homme County Highway Department for 30 years as a truck driver and patrol operator.

On September 1, 1962 he married Hazel (Beecher) Hirsch at the Little Brown Church near Nashua, IA. He thus gained two stepdaughters, Sharon Kaye and Judith Ann. They made their home in Scotland, SD.

He retired in 1982. He then took a serious interest in garden and yard work and in recycling metals. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing and traveling.

He was baptized and became a member of the Scotland Presbyterian Church in 1964 where he served briefly on the Board of Trustees. He was a member of American Legion Post #183 of Tabor, SD since 1945 and a member of a bowling team from 1965 until 2000.

Frank passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland at the age of 95 years and 25 days.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel, of Scotland; three daughters: Cindy (Craig) Dempsey of Omaha, Sharon (Darrell) Orth of Lesterville, and Judy (Tony) Rokusek of Olivet; five grandchildren: Chris (Justin) Mayfield and Cara Dempsey of Omaha, Danielle (Wesley) Schaeffer of Utica, Rochelle (Kevin) Adam Olson of Yankton and Jim (Darcy) Rokusek of Sioux Falls; 10 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law: Florence Vesely, Lena Vesely and Leona Vesely and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his first wife, parents, brothers and a great-grandson.

Vlasta “Lassie” (Ruman) Miller was born on Friday, April 27, 1923 at Tyndall, South Dakota to Alois and Alice (Hladky) Ruman, Sr. She graduated from Tabor High School in 1940. She received her teaching certificate from Southern State Normal School in Springfield, then taught school for four months. She was a civil service clerk for the War Dept. for one year in Washington, D.C. and three years in Detroit, Michigan. She married Orville Henderson in December of 1945 and they had a son, Roger. After returning to South Dakota, Lassie worked for the ASCS for 31 years, retiring in 1981. Lassie married Gerald “Jerry” Miller on August 6, 1960 at the United Methodist Church in Tyndall. She was an active member of the Methodist Church and was treasurer for 17 years. She was a member of the WFLA for over 50 years and was a nominee for “Fraternalist of the Year.” She served as secretary for 39 years and also 2 years for the state chapter. She was a member of the Czech Heritage Preservation Society and was secretary for that organization for 32 years. She was a member of the Tyndall VFW Auxiliary and was secretary for 31 years. She enjoyed bowling and was secretary of the Women’s Bowling League in Tyndall for 20 years and president for 4 years. Lassie passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society of Tyndall at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 12 days.

Grateful for having shared Lassie’s life are her husband Jerry Miller of Tyndall; her son, Roger (Marci) Henderson of Bloomington, Minnesota; two grandchildren: Sean (Andrea) Henderson and Jodi (Dustin) Lotz; one great-grandson, Zachary Parker Lotz; two brothers: Lumir (Marcy) Ruman of Tyndall and Alois Ruman, Jr. of Tabor; a sister-in-law, Esther Ruman of Marquette, Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Alois and Alice Ruman, Sr., she was preceded in death by two brothers: Edward Ruman and Robert Ruman; and two sisters-in-law, Irene (Mrs. Robert) Ruman and Mildred (Mrs. Alois) Ruman.
