Leonard Allison Wade Mehlhaff, Jr., 56
October 12, 1959 - April 16, 2016

Funeral services for Leonard Allison Wade Mehlhaff, Jr., were held April 20 at Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston.

Arrangements were by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston.

Leonard Allison Wade Mehlhaff, Jr., was born October 12, 1959, to Leonard Sr. and Valindy (Kreth) Mehlhaff in Parkston. He attended Kulm #35 country school and Parkston High School, graduating in 1977. He attended Mitchell Vo-Tech and graduated in May 1979 with a degree in Electronic Communications. For a short time, he worked for Jim’s TV and Radio in Tripp, but moved back to the farm in order to help his dad. After his dad retired off the farm, he worked for Syncom in Mitchell until being injured in an altercation resulting in a serious brain injury. After extensive therapy, he returned to work at Jude’s Restaurant in Parkston for a few years.

He was a member of the Parkston JCs.

He entered the Good Samaritan Society, Tripp, on April 15 and died April 16 at the age of 56 years.

He is survived by his sister, Cheryl (Richard) Weisz, Sturgis; four nieces, Shanna Weisz, Sturgis, Alexa (Alois) Hartl, Austria, Kyla (David) Guthmiller, Scotland, and Chaska Weisz and fiancee, Shawn Walker, Sturgis; 11 great-nieces and great-nephews; an uncle, LuVern Kreth, Mt. Vernon; an aunt, Gladys Ziebart, Parkston; and 31 cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 15 aunts and uncles; and several cousins.

Viola Brockel

Funeral services for Viola Brockel, 90, of McLaughlin, were held Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at the UCC Church in McLaughlin.

Burial was in the McLaughlin United Methodist cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.

Visitation and prayer services were held Nov. 15 at the funeral home.

Viola passed away Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at the Golden LivingCenter in Mobridge.

Viola (Eberhart) Brockel was born May 9, 1920, to John and Elizabeth (Kary) Eberhart southeast of Eureka. At a young age her parents moved to McLaughlin on a farm northeast of town. Viola attended Lincoln School and graduated from McLaughlin High School.

In 1949, she married Reuben Brockel. They had two girls, Betty and Nila. In addition to raising her family, she helped her husband whenever she was needed on the farm.

Viola was active in her church as a Sunday School teacher and served on Christian Women’s Fellowship for many years. She served a term as President of the Women’s Society, was active in 4-H as a leader, and worked for election boards and county fairs.

Her hobbies were gardening and raising a lot of flowers, always sharing her produce with many friends.

Viola also cut many pictures of the first graders for over 20 years. The children really enjoyed the animals and western pictures, something that Viola really enjoyed too. She baked the children a batch of cookies at the end of each year.

She is survived by daughters, Betty (Roger) Opp of Rapid City, Nila (Casper) Kraft of McLaughlin; five grandchildren, Susan (Evan) Deneris of Salt Lake City, Utah, Stuart (Deidre) Opp of London, England, Stacey (Mike) Arens of Sandy, Utah, Carmen (Carson) Kostelecky of Sidney, Mont., and Kim (Cody) Eaton of Dupree; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clara Stotz of Hugo, Minn., and Emma Rau of Rapid City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and four sisters, Lydia Banek, Martha Aman, and Irene and Edna in infancy.

Casketbearers were Claude Kissack, Dean Banek, George Chalmers, Tom Fischer, Virgil Comeau, Joe Harrison, Donald Schott and Donnie Kraft.

Honorary bearers were David Harrison Sr., John Harrison, Ray Goehring, Warren and Gladys Friesz, Marvin Pleinis and all staff at Golden LivingCenter.

David S. Beckler

TULSA, Okla. — David S. Beckler, 75, Tulsa and formerly of Rapid City, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at Village Health Care Center in Broken Arrow, Okla.

Survivors include one son, Scott Beckler, Tulsa; two brothers, Gary Beckler, Hettinger, N.D., and Milton Beckler, Walnut Creek, Calif.; five sisters, Thelma Greni, Bowman, N.D., Ruth Kuntz, Mandan, N.D., Beatrice Christenson, Fargo, N.D., Shirley Gardner, Rapid City, and Holly Blair, Napa, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche, S.D.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Kent Stillson officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.

Cynthia Runs Above

PINE RIDGE — Cynthia Runs Above, 41, Pine Ridge, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, in Minneapolis.

Survivors include three sons, Eldon No Moccasin III, Lincoln, Neb., and Colton Runs Above and Cruz Granillo, both of Sioux Falls; three daughters, Robin Chase Alone, Hermosa, Aldena Ollinger, Rapid City, and Kamelia No Moccasin, Manderson; and two grandchildren.

Two-night wake begins at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Wakpamni CAP office in Pine Ridge.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the CAP office, with the Rev. Ben Tyon, the Rev. Agnes Tyon and the Rev. Fred Mesteth officiating. Vincent Brings Plenty will officiate at traditional ceremonies.

Burial will be at Holy Cross Episcopal cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn F. ‘Koko' Saknikent

MANDERSON — Carolyn F. "Koko" Saknikent, 60, Manderson, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, in Rapid City.

Survivors include one son, Josef Saknikent, Manderson; one daughter, Tia Mai Saknikent, Manderson; four brothers, Faron Runs Against, Manderson, Merrill Fast Horse, Rapid City, James Hawk, Okreek, and Michael Lucio, Morton, Minn.; three sisters, Helene McClosky, St. Francis, Donnalyn Snider, Manderson, and Juanita Lucio, Rapid City; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Two-night wake begins at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at St. Agnes Catholic Hall in Manderson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the hall, with the Rev. Jim Ryan officiating. Rick Two Dogs will officiate at traditional services.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Otto ‘Glenn' Harmon

NEWELL — Otto "Glenn" Harmon, 71, Newell, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at his home.

Survivors include one son, Richard Harmon, Newell; four daughters, Myra Meyer, Piedmont, Lori Couch, Gillette, Wyo., Tina Hayton, Paducah, Ky., and Rebecca Boylay, Newell; his mother, Ruth Harmon, Oacoma; three sisters; Irene, June and Alice; five brothers, Gene, Kenneth, Donald, James and Wayne; 20 grandchildren; and five great-grandsons.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, with family present from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and from 10 a.m. to service time Saturday, Nov. 17, at First Baptist Church in Chamberlain.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Bruce Anderson officiating.

Burial will follow at Oacoma cemetery.

William Robert ‘Bill' Emme Jr.

CLEARFIELD — William Robert "Bill" Emme Jr., 67, Clearfield, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at Winner Regional Healthcare Center.

Survivors include his wife, Leora Emme, Millboro; four sons, Dale Emme, Milboro, Tim Emme, Spearfish, Robert Emme, Hill City, and Dennis Emme, Arnolds Park, Iowa; and nine grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, at Mason Funeral Home in Winner.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winner.

Burial will be at Colome cemetery.

William Fred Littau

SAN MANUEL, Ariz. —(William) Fred Littau, of San Manuel, Ariz., died on November 11, 2001.

He was born on January 1, 1920, at Burke, S.D., the son of John and Magdalena (Hoffman) Littau. His early years were spent on the family farms near Gregory, Carter and in Mellette County, S.D. He was a graduate of White River High School, Southern Normal, and Yankton College. Fred obtained a Masters Degree from University of South Dakota. He taught and coached for two years in Nebraska, one in Washington state, and 16 years in South Dakota. He married Sally, daughter of Charles and Edith Hight, in 1948. In 1960, they moved to San Manuel, Ariz., where Fred coached until his retirement in 1982. After his retirement, he enjoyed cabinet making until two days before his death. He was an accomplished horseshoe player, golfer and bowler. He continued his bowling until 2001. He had notable success with his football team in Deshler, Nebraska (1943-44), White River, S.D., basketball teams in 1949, 1955 and 1956, and nearly 20 years of track at San Manuel, Arizona. He was inducted into the Arizona Track/Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 1995. Littau Field in San Manuel, Ariz., is named in his honor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 50 years, Sally; and his brother Otto. He is survived by his two children, Clifford, Lead, S.D., and Sally, Tucson, Ariz.; four brothers, Adolph (San Diego, Calif.), Donald (Portland, Ore.), Ruben (Auburn, Calif.), and Anton (Naknek, Alaska); and six sisters, Edna Stoltz (Sycamore, Ill.), Martha Schafer (Vacaville, Calif.), Luella Ring (Rapid City, S.D.), Alvina Evans (Spearfish, S.D.), Emma Fawx (Newcastle, Calif.), and Suzanne Mundorf (Anchorage, Alaska).

With Fred's teaching and coaching, he had a tremendous impact on generations of students. He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, and currently a member of Shepherd of the Hills Church in Tucson.

Funeral services will be at Evergreen Mortuary, 3015 North Oracle Road, on Wednesday, November 14, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Fred Littau Scholarship Fund in White River, South Dakota, 57579.

Otto A. Gutzmer Jr.

MESA, Ariz. — Otto A. Gutzmer Jr. died at Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz., on November 12, 2001, at the age of 93 plus years, from complications resulting from several surgeries.

Otto was born on August 23, 1908, to Otto A. Gutzmer Sr. and Babette Spillman Gutzmer at Lane, South Dakota. He and Margaret Parker were married on March 5, 1933, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Woonsocket, S.D. They farmed and ranched their entire life in the Woonsocket area, prior to their retirement in the early '70s. They continued to reside on the family farm north of Woonsocket until 2000, at which time they moved to Huron, S.D.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Parker) Gutzmer, and five children, Norman (Doris) Gutzmer, Lincoln, Nebraska, Janet (Fay) Witte, Mesa, Ariz., Marilynn (Wayne/Punch) Peters, Mesa, Ariz., Wayne (Bonnie) Gutzmer, Black Hawk, S.D., and Wally (Judi) Gutzmer, East Tawakoni, Texas. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter (Carolyn) Gutzmer; four sisters, Betty Luhrs, Hilda Wacker, Erna Smith and Florence Kaufman; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother (Albert Gutzmer); and a sister (Marie Schroeder).

Pallbearers are his grandsons, Dwight Gutzmer, Dean Gutzmer, David Gutzmer, Rex Witte, Tony Peters, Brett Gutzmer, Wally Gutzmer Jr., Steve Gutzmer, Mark Gutzmer and James Gutzmer. Honorary pallbearers are his granddaughters, great-grandchildren, and his many close friends, relatives and neighbors.

Visitation will be Friday evening (7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) at Basham Funeral Parlor in Woonsocket, S.D. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 17, in Woonsocket, S.D., at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church under the direction of Basham Funeral Service. Interment will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens, rural Huron, S.D.

Ella ‘Floe' Williams Sasiadek

RAPID CITY — Ella "Floe" Williams Sasiadek, 101, of Rapid City, died Sunday, November 11, 2001, at her home.

She was born in Henry County, Iowa, December 28, 1899, to James and Elizabeth Williams. Her family moved to South Dakota in 1903 and lived near Creston, S.D.

She married Steven Sasiadek on December 12, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., and lived there until 1978, when she moved to Rapid City.

Floe was a member of Open Bible Christian Center. She lived with her nephew and wife, Jim and Kay Williams, since 1994.

She is survived by one son, John Sasiadek, Mount Prospect, Ill.; one daughter-in-law, Felice Sasiadek Walters; one sister, Alta Palloch of Rapid City, S.D.; three grandchildren, Stan Sasiadek, Cochranville, Pa., and John Sasiadek and Cheryl Giovannetti, both of Mount Prospect, Ill.; four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two husbands; two brothers, Arlos Williams and Jesse Williams; and two sisters, Wilma Williams and LaVee Nichols.

Visitation will be Wednesday, November 14, 2001, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Thursday, November 15, 2001, from 9 a.m. until service time at Behrens Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be Thursday, November 15, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Behrens Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Les Potts officiating.

Burial will be at Mountain View cemetery.
