Joella Sprayberry

RAPID CITY - Joella Sprayberry, 64, Rapid City and formerly of Gillette, Wyo., died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Meadowbrook Manor in Rapid City.

Survivors include her mother, Ruth Greathouse, Arcadia, Calif.; two daughters, Elizabeth Matti, Deadwood, and Rhonda Sprayberry, Casper, Wyo.; two sons, Calvin Yockey, Black Hawk, and Steven Sprayberry, Gillette; two sisters, Jenelle Schott and Cherianne Atzbach, both of Denver; one brother, Dr. Hugh E. Greathouse, Arcadia; and six grandchildren.

In keeping with Joella's wishes, private family services will be held at a later date.

Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish is in charge of arrangements.

Harold J. Monroe

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Harold J. Monroe, 77, Gainesville, Fla., died Dec. 29, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Pam Monroe, Gainesville; two daughters, Melody J. Monroe, Atlanta, Ga., and Marci J. Monroe, Gainesville; and twin granddaughters.

There will be a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, at United Churches in Hot Springs, S.D.

Benedict 'Benny' Dirk

WINNER - Benedict "Benny" Dirk, 74, Winner, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Winner Regional Healthcare Center.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Dirk, Winner; five stepchildren, Joel Gronlund, Sioux Falls, Jim Gronlund, Pierre, Jerry Gronlund, Rapid City, Richard Gronlund, Belle Fourche, and Diane Ekroth, Winner; five grandchildren; five sisters; and one brother.

Visitation will be before services at Mason Funeral Home in Winner.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at the funeral home.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Elton Lloyd

PLATTE - Elton Lloyd, 77, Platte, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at home.

Survivors include three daughters, Pam Holter, Rapid City, Bobbe Westra, Platte, and Melinda Mayer, Tripp; two brothers, Casey Lloyd and O.D. Lloyd, both of Jacksonville, Texas; one sister, Mary Lou Browne, Green Valley, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at Platte Funeral Chapel, with a prayer service at 1:30 p.m.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Olive Presbyterian Church in Platte. Burial will be in Old Platte cemetery.

Jossiye Hobert DuBray

RAPID CITY - Jossiye Hobert DuBray, 60, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Denver.

Jossiye Hobert DuBray, whose Lakota name is OKechezeh Ah Echaghe, which means growing up through the war, was born March 11, 1941, to Eugene and Eva Vera (Hawkins) DuBray at Allen. He attended school at American Horse Day School in Allen. He later attended high school at the Black Hills Army Depot at Igloo, where he graduated. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. While in the service, he served in the Vietnam War, where he received a Purple Heart and many other awards. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant after serving 19 years and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was also stationed in Istanbul, Turkey. He returned to Ellsworth Air Force Base. In 1973, he retired from the Air Force.

Joe worked in Washington, D.C., for a short time, then moved to Aberdeen, where he worked at the United Tribes as Director for College Funds.

In 1979, Joe donated his kidney to his brother, Jeff.

In the 1990s, he spent most of his time traveling and visiting relatives and friends.

He is survived by three children, Myron DuBray of Batesland, and Mark DuBray and Michelle Howard, both of South Carolina; his sisters, Amelia Nelson, Marcella Iron Cloud, and Permillia Prue, all of Rapid City, and Joan Arguello of Thornton, Colo.; one brother, Marty Mahrt of Rapid City; one Hunka sister, Irene Gonzales of Rapid City; two granddaughters; many nieces and nephews; and two aunts, Louise DuBray Zimiga and Cynthia DuBray Mahrt, both of Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and one sister.

A wake service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at Mother Butler Center in Rapid City, with a Rosary at 7 p.m.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Mother Butler Center, with Fr. Pat McCorkell S.J. officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be held by Patrick Nelson and Alvin Iron Cloud. Military rites will be conducted by the Pass Creek Post 317, with Commander Melvin Young, and also the Native American Veterans Association Post 1, with Commander Ed Cutgrass. Interment will be at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Arrangements are with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Richard 'Dick' Tall

MANDERSON - Richard "Dick" Tall, 83, Manderson, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, in Manderson.

Survivors include one sister, Norma Shields, Rapid City; three nieces, Jo Ann Tall and Lorraine Pourier, both of Porcupine, and Betty Janis, Manderson; and two nephews, Eugene Sun Bear, Gordon, Neb., and George Tall, Manderson.

One-night wake services will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at St. Agnes Catholic Hall in Manderson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Manderson, with the Rev. Jim Ryan, S.J., and the Rev. Cordelia Red Owl officiating. Burial will be in St. Thomas Episcopal cemetery in Manderson.

Sioux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Theresa Hollow Horn Bear-Lulow

ROSEBUD - Theresa Hollow Horn Bear-Lulow, 70, Rosebud, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at White River Health Care Center.

Theresa was born Nov. 28, 1931, in Parmelee, youngest daughter of Daniel and Julia Hollow Horn Bear. She attended school in St. Francis.

She was married to Paul R. Gregg Sr. in 1948. Seven children were born to this marriage.

In 1971, Theresa married Albert Lulow.

Theresa lived in Rapid City from 1973 to 1994. She moved back home to the Rosebud area in 1994.

Theresa's working career was as a nursing assistant. She worked in hospitals in Rosebud, Pierre, and Rapid City.

Theresa loved her family deeply. She was from the honorable Hollow Horn Bear Tiospaye on the Rosebud Reservation. She was the last grandchild of Chief Hollow Horn Bear.

Survivors include seven children, Paul R. Gregg-Bear and

Terrence Gregg, both of Rosebud, Barbara and Joe Jones, Howard Gregg, and Susan Gregg, all of Rapid City, Delores Gregg, Winner, and Patricia and Render Wyatt, Cheyenne, Wyo.; her 21 beloved grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; nephews; nieces; and cousins. Theresa is also survived by her best friend, Ruby Dubray from St. Francis.

She was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings.

Theresa was loved and will be missed by many.

A two-day wake will begin at 1 p.m. today at St. Bridges Church in Rosebud.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at St. Charles Church in St. Francis.

Cheryl L. Ice

BEULAH, Wyo. - Cheryl L. Ice, 58, Beulah, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at home.

Survivors inclue her life partner, Bill Shepperson, Beulah; and her sister, Vernelle "Sam" Ice Armstrong, Spearfish.

Arrangements are pending with Carlsen and Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish.

Roger Damberger

SPEARFISH - Roger Damberger, 53, Spearfish, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include his mother, Kathryn Damberger, Spearfish; two sons, Michael Damberger and Joseph Damberger, both of Spearfish; and a lifelong friend and companion, Nancy Tallent, Spearfish; three brothers; Donald Damberger and Robert Damberger, both of Minneapolis, and Myron Damberger, Annadale, Minn.; three sisters, Marlys Leinen, Apple Valley, Minn., Mary Lou Campbell, Fargo, N.D., and Colleen Pool, Gillette, Wyo.; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Carlsen and Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish. A rosary will be at 6 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the church, with the Rev. Ron Garry officiating.

Burial, with military honors, will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Sandra K. Bates

RAPID CITY - Sandra K. Bates, 40, Rapid City, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, in Hot Springs.

Survivors include her mother, Delores Fedie, Northglenn, Colo.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs.

Ellin M. Dunn

RAPID CITY — Ellin M. Dunn, 92, of Rapid City, died Friday, August 31, 2001, at a Rapid City nursing home.

Ellin was born on June 6, 1909. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Dunn, and one son, William Dunn. Ellin is survived by her daughter, Jacquie Sorbon and her husband, Robert, of Rapid City; five granddaughters, Lori Salkowski and her husband, John, Kristie Constantine and her husband, Jim, Shelly Johnson and her husband, Denis, Marilyn Dunn Martin and her husband, David, and Marty Edwards and three grandsons, Martin Dunn and his wife, Kelly, Bill Dunn and Mike Dunn. Ellin was blessed with 13 great-grandchildren, Abigail, Michael and Kate Salkowski, Jessica and John Constantine, Wendy and Sam Johnson, Matty Christensen, Tyler and Conner Dunn and Merrick, MaKenna and Isaac Martin; and one great-great-grandchild, Chloe McClain.

Memorial services and inurnment will take place in Butte, Mont., at a later date.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Alfred 'Bugs' Oien

KADOKA — Alfred "Bugs" Oien, 76, Kadoka, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Survivors include one sister, Alvina Brown, Kadoka.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Kadoka, with the Rev. Jill Jackson officiating.
