SPEARFISH - Lydia Zimmerman, 80, Spearfish and formerly of Belle Fourche, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Survivors include one son, Larry Zimmerman, Pierre; four daughters, Linda Boyd, Sioux Falls, Penny Harris, Cincinnati, Peggy Zimmerman, Washington Court House, Ohio, and Mary McGuigan, Spearfish; two brothers, Raymond Schmidt, Belle Fourche, and Thomis Schmidt, Advance, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.

Inez F. Komer

WINNER - Inez F. Komer, 96, Winner, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Winner Regional Nursing Home.

Survivors include one stepdaughter, Dorothy Edwards, Winner.

Her husband, Leonard Komer, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be before services, which will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner.

Burial will be at St. James cemetery in Toronto, Iowa.

Mason Funeral Home of Winner is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence Everett Woodard Jr.

UPTON, Wyo. - Clarence "Woody" Woodard Jr. died Oct. 19, 2001, at the age of 70, at the family home in Upton.

Clarence was born in a Model A Ford on Jan. 27, 1931, near Westover, S.D., on the way to the hospital, the son of Clarence Everett and Florence Gwyneth (Walker) Woodard. He was the fourth child born in a family of 10 children. The family resided on a farm near Westover. They relocated to Murdo, S.D., in 1937.

Lefty, as he was called as a boy, received all his schooling in Murdo, graduating in 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict in the Pacific.

He married Elsie Palander on Dec. 31, 1954, in Murdo. To this union, three children were born. The couple divorced in 1995.

Woody attended linotype school in St. Charles, Iowa. He worked at various newspapers until purchasing the Valley Irrigator, the weekly newspaper in Newell, S.D., on Jan. 1, 1967. The family operated the paper until October 1971, moving to Aberdeen, S.D.

He returned to printing in 1975, purchasing Northern Hills Printing in Spearfish, S.D. In July of 1976, he also purchased the Weston County Gazette. Woody operated the Gazette until the time of his death.

On Aug. 10, 1996, Woody married Marjery McAulay in Upton, Wyo. Through this union, he gained seven children and a large extended family. The couple enjoyed six years of adventures, golfing, traveling, gambling, enjoying friends, family and most of all each other.

Woody was a founding member of the Upton Golf Club, an officer and board member of the organization, He was the "Upton Citizen of the Year" in 1996. He was past president of the Upton Chamber of Commerce and held many other offices during his membership. He was a member of the Wyoming Press Association, and the Edwin H. Japp VFW Post No. 9758, where he was currently serving as the Senior Vice Commander. Woody was also an avid participant in the Thursday night poker group.

Woody received numerous community awards. Most recently, he was honored with the PRECorp Team Champion Community Super Star award and the Weston County Friends of 4-H award. He was always willing to help any organization in the county with newspaper coverage or monetary support.

Woody is survived by his wife, Marjery, of Upton; one son, J. Bruce and Marilee Woodard of Spearfish; two daughters, Carmen and Jim Diehl of Upton, and Lisa Trandahl and fiance Ben LeVasseur of Upton. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Buffy and Justin McMillan, Gerald Haynes, Melaynee Trandahl, Jaki Haynes, T.J. Trandahl, Nick Trandahl and Matt Woodard; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Kade McMillan; stepsons, Chuck and Becky McAulay of Spearfish, Bruce and Anita McAulay of Kamluela, Hawaii, Mike McAulay of Casper, Wyo., Steve and Vicki Erickson of Guide Rock, Neb.; stepdaughters, Kathy and Everett Kraft of Upton, Vonda Carlson of Oakdale, Minn., Cathy and Ken Hanneman of Craig, Colo.; 26 step grandchildren; nine great-step grandchildren; two brothers, Roxy and Darlene Kieffe of Edgewood, N.M., and Richard and Darlene Kieffe of Kyle, S.D.; four sisters, Betty and Clarence Thornberg of Presho, S.D., Mitzi Kleinsasser of Stockton, Calif., Kay McMeeken of Santa Fe, Texas, Gay and Harvey Leider of Carson City. Nev.; many, many nieces and nephews; special "daughter" Melody Toth of Upton; and good friend and forever golf buddy Melvin Douglas of Upton.

Woody was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clifford Woodard; two sisters, Polly McFadden and Oma King; and one son-in-law, Joe Haynes.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Cedar Pines Golf Course. Burial will follow at the Upton Greenwood cemetery immediately following the memorial. The family would like friends to gather at the Upton Community Center after inurnment.

Memorials have been established to the Upton Ambulance Service and Cedar Pines Golf Course.

Fidler-Roberts Funeral Chapel in Sundance has been entrusted with arrangements.

Deloris M. Steele

RAPID CITY - Deloris M. Steele, 68, Rapid City, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, James Steele, Rapid City; one daughter, Brenda Adami, Black Hawk; three sons, Clyde Steele, Rapid City, Clark Steele, Hot Springs, and Clay Steele, Lake City, Fla.; two sisters, Alberta Hando and Marcella Wilson, both of Newcastle, Wyo.; three brothers, Alvin Fall, Newcastle, Kenneth Fall, Gillette, Wyo., and Jack Fall, Moorcroft, Wyo.; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Mary M. Welsh

WALL - Mary M. Welsh, 96, of Wall, died Saturday afternoon, Oct. 20, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.

Mary M. McDonald and her twin sister, Maurine, were born June 4, 1905, on a farm near Highmore, S.D., the daughters of Charles J. and Sarah (Cowan) McDonald. In 1908, the family moved by covered wagon to a farm on Bull Creek, located between Wall and Wasta, S.D. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1923.

Mary was united in marriage to Harold V. Welsh on April 23, 1927, in Wall. They made their home on a farm near Wasta until moving into Wall in 1935. While in Wall, Mary and Harold owned and operated a grocery store and later the Welsh Motel. After retiring from the motel in 1970, they continued to make their home in Wall.

After Harold's death on Nov. 12, 1991, Mary continued to reside in Wall until moving into the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood in 1993.

Mary was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wall.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Laura Jean Gunn and her husband, George, of Wasta; two sons, Wesley C. Welsh of Wall, and Gary L. Welsh and his wife, Patricia, of Rapid City; a daughter-in-law, Evonne Welsh of Spearfish; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Harold Welsh, she was preceded in death by two sons, Gail Arthur Welsh and one son in infancy; a great-great-granddaughter; her parents; two sisters, her twin sister Maurine McDonald who died as an infant, and her sister, Laura McDonald; three brothers, Carrol McDonald, Stephan McDonald and Paul McDonald.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a Rosary Service scheduled for 7 p.m., on Wednesday,

Oct. 24, all at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wall, with Father Bob Baden as the celebrant. Interment will be in the Wall cemetery, Wall.

A memorial is established.

Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.

Robert A. 'Bob' Quatier

SIOUX FALLS - Robert A. "Bob" Quatier, 63, Sioux Falls, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Avera McKennan Hospice.

Survivor include his wife, JoAnne Quatier; one daughter, Colleen Borstad, West Des Moines Iowa; one son, Brad Quatier, Rosemont, Minn.; two sisters, Irene Hubbard, Gillette, Wyo., and Jean Hennies, Sioux Falls; and four grandchildren.

No funeral services will be held.

Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William John 'Johnny' Krause

BELLE FOURCHE - William John "Johnny" Krause, 86, Rapid City and formerly of Belle Fourche, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in Rapid City.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel, Rapid City; three sons, William Krause, Columbia, Mo., Dennis Krause, Atkinson, N.H., and Kelvin Krause, Rapid City; one sister, Lillian Hansen of California; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and for one hour before services. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Hans Sacrison officiating. Burial will be at Pine Slope cemetery.

Roger Erickson, 66

Roger “Mick” Erickson, 66, Sturgis, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Gussie Erickson, Sturgis; his children, Lora, Erickson, Sioux Falls, Michael Erickson, Pierre, Diane Solaas and Daniel Solaas, both of Sturgis; two brothers, Jim Erickson, Rapid City, and Lynn Erickson, Pierre; and two granddaughters.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Frances "Maxine" Huckins
Jun 02 1921 - Oct 11 2010

Maxine Huckins died in Sundance, Wyoming after a short illness.

Frances “Maxine” Huckins was born in Alva, Wyoming on June 2, 1921 to Sara Orpha Berry and Henry Irving Bear. Maxine felt grateful for the support of her family especially her mother and her sisters and brothers as she grew up in Northern Wyoming. She married Robert “Bob” Huckins on November 19, 1937. They lived most of their married life in Upton, Wyoming. Maxine attended Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota for a short period hoping to become an elementary teacher. She was the mother of three sons in whom she took great pride. She is survived by one son, Alvin and Marsha Huckins and her devoted daughter-in-law, Ruby Huckins.

One of her greatest joys was being “granny” to her eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. She also had many wonderful relationships with her nieces and nephews. Maxine will be remembered for the many ways she supported and cared for her family.

She loved to garden and grew enough food to share with her entire family and neighborhood. She particularly enjoyed cooking and was well known for her amazing chicken noodle soup. She was a rancher and spent many years raising cattle and a variety of chickens, turkeys, peacocks, geese, ducks and whatever new variety of birds she could order each spring. Maxine was a quilter and left a legacy of quilts for each member of her family. Maxine will be remembered for the quiet strength she demonstrated in meeting life’s challenges and the extraordinary ways she supported her family.

Maxine is preceded in death by her husband, two sons: Ron and Bill Huckins, her brothers: John Bear and Edward Marenda, her sister, Jeneva Cooley, and two grandchildren: Robert Huckins and Audrey Nading. She is survived by her sisters: Mary Hill of Sturgis, South Dakota and Dorothy Stalbaum and her brother, Edgar Bear.

A private internment ceremony will be held with her immediate family. In lieu of flowers, cards which share stories of her impact on others would be appreciated by her family and can be mailed to 1412 Highway 116 South, Upton, Wyoming 82730.

Ivan A. Pietz, 89
August 7, 1927 - June 4, 2017

Funeral services for Ivan A. Pietz, were held June 10 at Hosanna Lutheran Church, Watertown, with the Rev. Janine Rew-Werling officiating. Music was provided by Lynn Osthus, organist, and Darrek and Celene Olson, vocalists. A prayer service was held prior. Visitation was at Hosanna Lutheran Church. Arrangements were by Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel, Watertown. Burial was at Mt. Hope cemetery, Watertown. Military honors were conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion and Frank H. Adams Post #750 of Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Watertown, and the Funeral Honors Team of the United States Navy. Honorary pallbearers were the residents on “Easy Street.” Active pallbearers were Keith Pietz, Nick Pietz, Keith Eischens, Kevin Fuerst, Travis Baum and Bailey Neuhauser.

Ivan was born August 7, 1927, in Hutchinson County to Edward and Alma (Hirsch) Pietz. He attended rural school and worked for various farmers in the Tripp area. Ivan entered the United States Navy December 12, 1945, serving during WWII and was honorably discharged November 27, 1946.

On August 29, 1949, Ivan married Linda E. Kurtz at Delmont. Ivan worked in construction with Hattendorf Construction, building churches and other buildings. The couple moved to Watertown in 1970, and Ivan worked for Schull Construction, later starting his own construction company called Watertown Builders, which he operated for over 25 years. He then worked as a building inspector for the City of Watertown, retiring in 2008.

He was a member of Hosanna Lutheran Church. Ivan enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially deer hunting, gardening and neighborhood get togethers.

Ivan passed away June 4 at the hospital in Watertown at the age of 89.

Ivan is survived by his wife, Linda, and his son, Duane (Diane) Pietz, both of Watertown; four grandchildren: April Pietz, Nicole Pietz (Keith Eischens), Keith Pietz and Nick Pietz; four great-grandchildren: Bailey Neuhauser, Elizabeth Pietz, Ethan Eischens and Chase Eischens; six brothers: Vilmer Pietz, Tripp, Milbert (Esther) Pietz, Mitchell, Harlan (Harriet) Pietz, Sioux Falls, Darryl (Joy) Pietz, Watertown, Martin (Connie) Pietz, Rapid City and Larry (Penny) Pietz, Palisade, Minnesota; and two sisters, MayDene Fuerst, Sioux Falls, and Lola (Mike) Baum of Brandon.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Pietz; his parents; and four sisters: LaVerna Guericke, Arlene Rieger, Glendora Bartunek and JoAnn Kirschenman.

Mabel Josephine (Hofer) Voss, 92
January 24, 1925 - June 3, 2017

Funeral services for Mabel Voss were held June 8 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Clayton, with the Reb. Kenneth Soyk officiating. Music was provided by Ruth Buchmann, organist. Internment followed in the church cemetery. Casketbearers were her grandchildren: Londa Dewald, Bob Erck, Bill Erck, Josh Marquardt, Michael Jung, Jim Erck, Terese Kubat and Amanda Harty. Walter Funeral Home, Freeman, Bridgewater and Marion, was in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Josephine Hofer Voss, was born to Joe J. Hofer and Justina Wipf January 24, 1925, in Bridgewater. She graduated from Bridgewater High School. She was united in marriage to Bill Voss January 14, 1945, in Dolton. They farmed and raised their family near Clayton. After her husband died, she moved to Parkston in August of 1979.

She was a lifelong member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. In the fall 2014, she moved to the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls.

She died June 3 at the age of 92.

She is survived by her three daughters: Donna Erck, Sioux Falls, Connie (Pat) Jung, Omaha, Nebraska, and Ivadell (Ray) Marquardt, Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Pearl Duba, Rose Larson and Carol Brown; and one brother, Wilbert Hofer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son-in-law Rolan Erck, brothers, brother and sister-in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
