Harold Bolyard, 84

Harold Bolyard, 84, of Pierre, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at St. Mary’s TCU. Memorial services were Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Pierre. Inurnment will be in his home state of West Virginia at a later date.

Isburg Funeral Chapel of Pierre has been placed in care of the arrangements.

Harold was born on Jan. 6, 1924, in Mogantown, W.Va., a son of the late Roy B. Bolyard and Lenna F. Bolyard.

He served in the U.S. Army in Europe in World War II and the U.S. Air Force as a B29 co-pilot in the Korean War. He retired in 1979 from the Pierre Regional Airport as air traffic controller with a combined military and government service of 30 years. He then owned and managed apartment complexes. He lived in Pierre since 1956 and enjoyed hunting, fishing and owned and flew his own airplane. He was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church and a member and volunteer with the American Legion, Masonic and VFW.

He is survived by a brother, Jerry Bolyard and spouse, Joan, of Sparks, Md. and sister, Patty Decker and spouse, Bill, of Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Dale Bolyard, and a sister, Edma E. Gibson, and brother-in-law, John C. Gibson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the St. Mary’s Healthcare Hospice, 801 E. Sioux Ave Pierre, SD 57501 or your preference Cancer Society/Research program and the First United Methodist Church.

Veronica Kathleen Parsons
June 2, 1941 - May 8, 2011

Veronica K. Parsons 69 of Rapid City, SD passed away Sunday, May 8, 2011 at her home.

A celebration of life will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2011 at the Sturgis First United Methodist Church 1755 Ball Park Road, with Rev. Kyle Reinhiller officiating.

Survivors include her daughters Deborah Parsons of Rapid City, Shari Parsons of Vail, CO, granddaughters Kassandra of Fort Hood, TX, Eryka and 2 great-granddaughters all of Rapid City, sisters Eleanor and husband Lloyd DaHaai of Chadron, Austen Stone of Christchurch, New Zealand, niece Holly DaHaai of Englewood, CO, nephews Jay DaHaai of Papillion, NE, Darby DaHaai of Bellevue, NE, brother-in-law Dick and wife Linda Parsons of Rapid City.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald R. Parsons April 18, 2011, and her parents.

Mark Allen Radel, 62
November 3, 1954 - June 3, 2017

Funeral Mass for Mark Radel were held June 8 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mitchell, with a visitation prior. Burial as at Calvary cemetery. Arrangements were by Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.

Mark Allen Radel was born November 3, 1954, in Parkston to Laverne and Bernice (Mogck) Radel. He grew up on the family farm south east of Parkston. He attended country school and then Parkston School, where he graduated High School in 1973. He then attended Mitchell Area Tech for electrical construction and maintenance and graduated in 1975. He then did electrical work and helped on the family farm.

He married Paula Mechtenberg June 5, 1976, in Parkston. The couple then lived by Parkston. They moved to a farm southeast of Parkston near his parents, and Mark started farming. Together, they were blessed with three children, Sara, Chad and Amanda.

They farmed until about 1989. They later moved to Mitchell where Mark worked for APC Management and then Radke Construction. He then went to work for Krohmer Plumbing, where he worked as a plumber for over 22 years until retiring. Mark loved his family, his wife, his children and their spouses and his grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching movies and talking with family and friends.

Mark died June 3 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 62.

Grateful for sharing his life, he is loved and remembered by his wife Paula Radel, Mitchell; children Sara (Dean) Parker, Sioux Falls, Chad (Danielle) Radel, Mitchell, and Amanda (John) Millan, Mitchell; five grandchildren, Carter, Eva, Sophia, Ella and Porter; brother Gary (Joyce) Radel; in-laws Dan (Pam) Mechtenberg, Mike (Patty) Mechtenberg, Linda (Steve) Williams, Becky (Dan) Bauer, Mary (Bob) Smits and Leslie Mechtenberg; step-mother-in-law Marilyn Mechtenberg; aunt Sr. Carol Mechtenberg; 17 nieces and nephews; five step-brothers and step-sisters in law; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Laverne and Bernice Radel; father and mother-in-law Gerry and Joyce Mechtenberg; brothers-in-law Scott Mechtenberg and Jay Hansen; two cousins; a nephew; aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

Bobby Dean Bentz
Aug 21 1961 - Jul 07 2010

Bobby Dean Bentz, 48, of Prescott Valley, Arizona died unexpectedly July 7, 2010 in Prescott, AZ. Bob was born August 21, 1961 in Sturgis, South Dakota to Don and Nola Bentz. Bob was employed by Summit Construction at the open pit of Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD and was a ranching partner with his parents in St. Onge, SD for many years before relocating to Arizona. Bob was currently employed with Freeport Moran in Bagdad, AZ. He proudly served his country in the South Dakota National Guard for 20 years, retiring in 1999.

Bobby enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles and especially drag racing Harleys with his brother, Bill and family’s race team, Eagle Cycle Racing. Bob won numerous events all around the western United States and he was the 2009 MDRA National Champion in the ET class: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGegyII3srY&feature;=channel. Bob especially enjoyed having his son Robert join the race team and share the thrill of racing.

Bobby is survived by his wife of 21 years, Connie; and children: son, Robert of Rapid City, SD, daughter Brandy and fiancée Dan Karcie of Phoenix, AZ; daughter April, Prescott Valley, AZ; step-son Will Janssen and fiancée Courtney of Lake Preston, SD; step-daughter Jessica (Connell) and husband Robert of Lake Norden, SD; and step-daughter Amanda (Scott) and husband Brad of Tucson, AZ. Bob had seven grandchildren and one on the way: Ethan, Tate, Daisalynn, Talan, Parker, Trinity, and Trystin. Bob is also survived by his mother, Nola Bentz-Reber of Rapid City, SD; three brothers: Curtis and wife Karen of Nemo, SD; George of Rapid City, SD; and Bill and wife Vikki of Prescott Valley, AZ; and two sisters: Cindy (Lester) and husband Tom, of Rapid City, SD and Suzi Schermerhorn of Rapid City, SD. Finally, Bobby is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who all looked up to him and will miss him greatly as well.

Bob was preceded in death by his father, Don in 1998 and brother, Duane in 1991.

A memorial service was held Thursday, July 15 in Prescott Valley, AZ. An additional service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, July 19 at the United Church of Christ, St. Onge, South Dakota with interment following at 11:30 A.M. at the Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis, SD. Family and friends will return to the St. Onge Church for lunch and family visitation following the interment. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Black Hills Funeral Home, Sturgis, SD (605-347-2522).

Bobby lived every day to the fullest and lived it for his family and grandkids. Bobby’s nickname was Jose Wales and he was fond of saying “holy cow”. We will try to remember him telling us “EASY” the way only he could. Bob would give you the shirt off his back, and his kindness and easy-going manner have been an inspiration in the lives of family and friends alike. He will be missed every single day from this day on. Ride on, Bobby, ride on.

Brad R Boardsen
Dec 25 1963 - Mar 23 2009

Black Hawk, SD - Brad R Boardsen, age 45, of Black Hawk, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Brad was born December 25, 1963, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of the late Danny R. Boardsen and the late Sharon J. Boardsen-Smith.

Brad was a dedicated and loving father. He enjoyed the outdoors, was an avid hunter and fisherman. Brad was an accomplished golfer who played many years at Valley Oaks Country Club. He authored an inspiring book “The Legend of Greenhorn”. He hiked the entire Appalachian Trail for the charity Volunteers in Medicine. Brad’s nickname on the trail was “cree” from the Indian tribe meaning “one who speaks our language” for his uncanny ability to mimic bird calls.

Brad was a highly skilled optician. He pioneered the development of a mobile prescription eyewear laboratory. He was also the founder and President of Eye Lenses, Inc. Throughout his career he cultivated many new friendships across the country. He also made it a priority to stay in touch with his hometown friends.

Although Brad’s life was cut short, he lived what he was given to the fullest. He didn’t wait until the end to experience his bucket list. He lived and worked all the way from Canada to the Caribbean.

Survivors include his Grandmother, Marjorie Graves of Clinton, brother Danny R. Boardsen II of Moberly, MO, sister Becky D. Boardsen of Boulder, CO and 3-year old daughter Aleigha Bradlee Yeager of Black Hawk, SD. He is also survived by 2 nieces and a nephew. He will be missed by his hunting dog Shiloh. He was preceded in death by his parents, his Grandfather Donald B Graves of Clinton, and his Grandparents Jensina and Ingvard Boardsen of Clinton.

Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church, 439 3rd Ave. So., Clinton, IA 52732. The Visitation and photo tribute commences at 10:00 a.m. The Memorial Service follows at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Stacy officiating. A marker will be placed at Clinton Lawn cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established for Brad's children's benefit. If you're interested in donating, the name of the fund is: Memorial Fund for Brad Boardsens Children. Donations will be accepted at the Memorial Service or can be deposited at any Wells Fargo Bank.

Douglas Emerson "Bud" Cates
Jan 09 1934 - Feb 28 2009

Douglas Emerson (Bud) Cates was taken by his Lord February 28, 2009, at his home surrounded by family and friends after battling Leukemia. He was born January 9, 1934 in Gillette, Wyoming to James and Willa (Bell) Cates. He was raised and attended schools in Gillette. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1951 and served in Korea and Japan on the USS Mispillion, with an Honorable discharge in 1954.

Douglas married Juanita L. Wells in 1953. Six children were born to this union, Cynthia, Kevin, Darryl, Mark, Lori, and Doyle.

Bud and his family moved to Everett, Washington, in 1965 where he worked and retired from Scott Paper Mill and later was a Singing Bartender. He was an excellent dancer and people would stop to watch him and Nita dance. They later divorced.

He met his long time friend, Dave Lyons and they moved to Gillette. They loved to fish and tell “Buddy Stories” with Vera McKinney and their faithful dog “Jingles”. He loved to garden, plant flowers, and trees (one of which the News-Record wrote an article because it was not native to the climate). He also grew tomatoes of every variety.

He dearly loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bud is survived by his long time friend Dave, Sisters: Mary Ann Barritt of Gold Bar, WA, Nancy Slattery (Jim), of Gillette. Brother: Raymond (Kathie) Cates of Gillette.

Daughters: Cynthia Wher of Sultan, WA, Lori (Doug) Bruskrud of Granite Falls, WA. Sons: Kevin (Rikki) Cates of Machias, WA., Darryl Cates of Everett, WA, Mark Cates of Cumby, TX, Doyle Cates of Marysville, WA and numerous nieces, and nephews.

Grandchildren: Donny, Chad, Katrina, Kala, Krista, and Kristi.

Great-Grandchildren: Cole, Chandler, Isabella, Kevin, Tea Maria, Jadin, Garette, Taylor, Baily, and Richard.

He was preceded in death by Ex-wife: Juanita, Father: James, Mother: Willa, and Brothers: James and Tim.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Memorials and Condolences may be mailed to 106 Richards Avenue, Gillette, Wyoming 82716.

Eleanor 'Bobbie' Van Pelt Rainman

RAPID CITY - Eleanor "Bobbie" Van Pelt Rainman, 87, Rapid City, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at a Rapid City nursing home.

Eleanor was born Nov. 24, 1913, in Walters, Okla. Eleanor, or Bobbie as her family and friends all called her, has had an exciting and entertaining life as she has accomplished everything she set her mind to do!

She was one of the first women professional basketball players ever to enter women's basketball. She played for the Wichita All Stars, the first professional basketball team for women. Bobbie joined the Navy in 1940 and served during World War II until 1944. She has traveled the world, nursing the wounded, doing private duty nursing and was Director of Nursing here in Rapid City at St. John's

McNamara Hospital until 1967. She returned to government nursing in 1967 and continued until 1987 when she retired from Fort Meade.

Survivors include three sons, Joseph H. Rainman, Garden City, Kan., Jim Van Pelt, Rapid City, and Michael D. Van Pelt, Aurora, Colo.; a sister, Lola Mae Lux, Rapid City; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, with a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, with Rev. Brian Christensen as the celebrant.

Interment, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273, will be at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Fred E. Bryan

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Fred E. Bryan, 99, of Chandler, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Gilbert.

Fred was born Sept. 22, 1902, in Oskaloosa, Ill. He moved to Lead, S.D., in 1911. In 1930, he married Hilda Louise Foglesong, who preceded him in death in 1966. Fred went to work for Homestake Mining Company as a payroll clerk in 1918 and retired in 1967 as Chief Purchasing Agent. He was a member of the Masons, South Dakota Traffic Bureau, Kiwanis and Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Lead School Board, the Board of County Commissioners, and the Church Vestry.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary and Martha; two grandsons, Craig and Marc; and two great-granddaughters, Madelyn and Leah. Fred is also survived by one sister, Dory Lyman, and is preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers. He was married to Veronica Stone and is survived by her children, Ben, Charlotte, Bill and Susan. Fred later married Judy Urban, and they moved to Arizona in 1972. She preceded him in death in 1995. He is survived by her children, Suzanne and Conni, and her granddaughter, Anna Rae.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Christ Church Episcopal in Lead, with Father Ron Hennies officiating.

Burial will be at the South Lead cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Pennington Gardens Foundation, 977 Pennington Drive, Chandler, AZ 85224, the nonprofit residence where Fred lived.

Lori Ann Cooke

RAPID CITY - Lori Ann Cooke, 33, Rapid City, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Scott Cooke, Rapid City; one daughter, Beth Cooke, Rapid City; two sons, Larry Joe Cooke and Matthew Cooke, both of Rapid City; her parents, Larry and Lynn Toman, Rapid City; one brother, Lonny Toman, Fort Gordon Ga.; her grandparents, Harvey and Lillian Remington, Rapid City; and Adeline Toman, Edgemont.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, and one hour before services at the church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at First Wesleyan Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Scott Wiley officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.

Harry W. Lehman

EDGEMONT - Harry W. Lehman, 80, Edgemont resident, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Hot Springs.

He was born May 31, 1921, at Summit S.D., the son of Robert and Minnie (DeBus) Lehman. He attended school at Summit and entered the CCC program and was stationed at Wall and Roubaix, S.D. Harry served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving from 1942 until 1945. He was awarded three Bronze Service Stars and two Purple Hearts while serving in Europe. He was called back to active duty during the Korean Conflict.

He married Mary Aune Gurske on Nov. 16, 1946.

Harry served as the Postmaster at Edgemont for a period of 19 years, retiring in 1978.

He was a life member of the American Legion, a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the National Association Postmasters Union, the NRA, Western Antiques Association and the Edgemont Senior Citizens Center. He served as a volunteer at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Hot Springs and accumulated over 6, 000 hours of volunteer time at the VAMC.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lehman, Edgemont; a daughter, Janis Taffe, and her husband, Steven, Alliance, Neb.; a grandson Zach Franzen, Springfield; a stepgrandson, Steve Taffe, Scottsbluff, Neb.; a great grandson, Joel McCarroll, Holton City, Texas; a sister, Deb Herbert, Atlantic, Iowa; and a brother. Melvin Lehman, Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Harry Lehman Jr.

Inurnment will be at the Black Hills National cemetery at Sturgis. Services are under the direction of the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, Rapid City.
