Rinard Harris Yellow Boy

RAPID CITY — Rinard Harris Yellow Boy, 43, Rapid City, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Yellow Boy, Wolf Point, Mont.; two sons, Rinard Yellow Boy Jr., Rapid City, and Darrel Bird, Wolf Point; three daughters, Cristy Yellow Boy, Catherine Yellow Boy and Carla Yellow Boy, all of Rapid City; two stepsons, Neal Iron Cloud and Thomas Iron Cloud, Wolf Point; one stepdaughter, Bonnie Iron Cloud, Wolf Point; six sisters, Denise Yellow Boy, Jessie Yellow Boy, Peggy Yellow Boy, Irma Swift Bird and Wanda Yellow Boy, all of Rapid City, and Victoria Castrejon, St. Paul, Minn.; two brothers, Calvin Yellow Boy and Royce Yellow Boy, both of Rapid City; and two grandchildren.

A service will be at 7 p.m. today at Mother Butler Center in Rapid City, with the Rev. Carl Douglas officiating.

One-night wake begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Billy Mills Hall, with Aberham Tobacco, the Rev. Darrell New and Keith Rich officiating.

Burial will follow at First Body of Jesus Christ cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Lester S. Tippey

SPEARFISH — Lester S. Tippey, 89, Spearfish and formerly of Whitewood, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Tippey, Spearfish; two daughters, Marlys Meyer, Sturgis, and Jean Miller, Spearfish; one sister, Lucille Gibbs, Portland, Ore.; one stepson, Ralph Jones, Chicago; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time Friday, Nov. 9, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Howard Smith officiating.

Burial will follow at Bear Butte cemetery in Sturgis.

Leonard Herr, 90
November 24, 1926 - December 16, 2016

Funeral services for Leonard Herr were held December 21 at St. John Lutheran Church, Madison, with the Rev. Elizabeth Pagnotta officiating.

Burial was in the Graceland cemetery, Madison, with Ellsworth Funeral Home, Madison, in charge of arrangements.

Leonard Herr was born November 24, 1926, at Tripp to Jacob and Sophia (Reich) Herr. He attended school in Tripp and married Viola Riedel March 3, 1950, at Tripp. They farmed south of Madison until he retired in 1992. He was a South Dakota auctioneer. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.

He died Friday, December 16. He attained the age of 90 years.

He is survived by his wife, Viola, Madison; four children, Donna (DeVern) Bundy, Converse, Texas, Richard (Dana) Herr, Sioux City, Iowa, Roger Herr, Sioux Falls, and Diane Kaiser, Fargo, North Dakota; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters and three brothers.

James Douglas "Jim" Bellman
Mar 25 1961 - Feb 18 2009

James (Jim) Douglas Bellman, age 47, passed away in a fire February 18, 2009 where he was living on Mystic Road near Hill City, SD.

He was born March 25, 1961, to Charles and Carolyn (Belkonen) Bellman at Grand Folks, ND.

A private memorial service was held with family in Rapid City.

Jim attended schools at Vermillion, Faulkton, and Cresbard, SD. In 1979 he married Lori Weideman in Baltic, SD. He lived in Dallas, TX, Los Angeles, CA, Lake Norden, SD and has lived in the Black Hills for the past seven years. He was a skilled carpenter with a specialty in woodworking. He enjoyed panning for gold, American history, reading, music and playing guitar.

Jim liked visiting with people and was a free spirit with a sense of adventure.

Survivors include one daughter Dana Haberling, Atlanta, GA, his mother Carolyn Larsen, Austin, TX, one brother John Bellman, Austin, TX and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father and his grandparents.

Arrangements have been entrusted with the Black Hills Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Sturgis, SD.

Dr. Alden Brooks Ranney, 101
January 31, 1915 - December 22, 2016

Funeral services for Dr. Brooks Ranney will be held Wednesday, December 28, at the United Church of Christ (Congregational), Yankton, with the Rev. Molly Carlson officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Ernest-Bowyer V.F.W. Post #791 and the SDARNGHG. Burial of his cremated remains will take place at a later date. Arrangements are by Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton.

Alden Brooks Ranney was born January 31, 1915, in Daytona Beach, Florida, to Milo and Ruth (Schertz) Ranney. He grew up in Metamora, Illinois. He graduated from Metamora High School and worked his way through Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio. He graduated from Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Illinois, in 1939. He married Ruth Vail Snow October 14, 1939, in Oak Park, Illinois.He applied for a commission in the United States Army as a medical officer January 1, 1941. He became Battalion Surgeon for the 181st Engineer Heavy Ponton Battalion and served in that position for 52 months in England, France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg and Germany under combat conditions. He had attained the rank of Captain.

After the war, he came back to Chicago and began residency training at Wesley Memorial Hospital in October 1945. There, he earned a Masters Degree in Physiology.

He joined the Yankton Clinic in 1948 and taught at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, Vermillion, where he became Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Dakota and established the OB/GYN residency training program. He was a Founding Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a founding member of the Perinatal Mortality Standing Committee for South Dakota. He was a member of the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served in various offices and committees in those organizations. He served as the national President of American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1981-1983.

During the 1960s, he was elected to two three-year terms on the Yankton City Commissions and served one year as Mayor of Yankton.

After the death of his wife, Ruth, in 1979, he married Viona (Thum) Voy in 1981. She joined him in his travels as President of ACOG, and together they led tours to many countries around the world, first for Pillar Travel and then Rupiper Travel. He retired from active practice at the age of 80.

He was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in the year 2000. He and his wife, Vi, were designated Citizens of the year in 2013, for their many contributions to this community.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Congregational, serving as moderator and on many committees. He was a V.F.W. life member, member of the Elks and American Legion and has been a member of the Yankton Area Concert Association since 1948.

He died Thursday, December 22, at Autumn Winds Assisted Living at the age of 101.

He is survived by his wife, Vi; children: Robert (Pat) Ranney, Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. David Ranney, Dallas, Texas, and Carol Ranney Hesla, Yankton; one granddaughter, Erin (Tony) Decker, Sioux Falls; four great-grandsons, one great- granddaughter; brother and sisters-in law, Marvin and Agnes Thum, Scotland, Bud and Marilyn Kratz, Yankton, and Donna Mouser, Scottsdale, Arizona; and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth in 1979, sisters Eloise (Minar) Rogers and Muriel (Richard) Schrempf, and brother Richard (Barbara), nephew Michael Ranney, Alexandria, Virginia, niece LeAnn Gerlah, and step-son Mark Lynell Voy.

Dorothy Fritz
Mar 18 1914 - May 10 2009

Dorothy Fritz 95 of Sturgis passed away Sunday, May 10, 2009 at the Sturgis Regional Senior Care.

Visitation will be from 12-7:00 pm Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at the Black Hills Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Sturgis. A funeral service will be 10:00 am Thursday, May 14, 2009 at the Grace Lutheran Church, with Rev. Michael Fox officiating. Interment will follow at the Bear Butte cemetery in Sturgis.

Dorothy was born March 18, 1914 to Conrad and Mary Rieb in Chicago. In her younger years, Dorothy and her family moved to Kansas, Wisconsin, and finally South Dakota where she went to grade school in the Nisland/Belle Fourche area. In 1934 she married Carl Fritz and after six years of living in Newell they moved to Montana, then to Colorado. Eventually, they came back to farm in Belle Fourche, Spearfish, Newell, and Vale area for fifteen years. Dorothy has lived in Sturgis since 1963 where she was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her children Melvin and Grada Fritz of FL, Carl Fritz of OK, James Fritz of SD, Barbara and Palmer Dahl of SD, Dona and Jim Brennan of CA, brothers Jake Rieb of SD, Fred Rieb of MO, sister Erma Werlinger of SD, 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Fritz, son Robert, grandson Robert Jr., great-granddaughter Monique, parents, 4 brothers Edward, Henry, Carlie, John Rieb, and sister Annie Felton.

Daryl Vander Vorste

Daryl Joseph Vander Vorste, 56, of Spearfish, passed away on Oct. 19, in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

Daryl was born on August 22, 1954, in Bismarck, N.D., to Lloyd and Alvina (Lauinger) Vander Vorste. He graduated from Pollock High School in 1972, and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree at Black Hills State University in Spearfish in 2005. Daryl went on to complete additional course work at the University of South Dakota and completed his higher education with a Master’s Degree in Business from Arizona State University in 2008.

Daryl is survived by his daughter, Susanna Vander Vorste of Brookings; brothers, Wayne Vander Vorste (Janet) of Pierre and Craig Vander Vorste of Gold Canyon, Ariz.

He is preceded in death by his father Lloyd and mother Alvina Vander Vorste.

Memorial services are pending and will be announced when confirmed.

Calvin Mangelsen
Jun 29 1929 - Oct 09 2010

Calvin Mangelsen 81 of Rapid Valley passed away Saturday, October 9, 2010 at the Ft Meade VA Hospital.

A funeral service will be 1:00pm Friday, October 15, 2010 at the Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis, with Rev. Nick Rombaugh officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00am until service time at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Black Hills National cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.

Cal was born June 29, 1929 in Union County, SD to Jake and Bessie Mangelsen. After school Cal joined the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Jeanette Mangelsen on March 5, 1991

In his younger years he enjoyed farming, running, the Hermosa Garage, fishing, hunting, and horse back riding. As he grew older his life was his grandchildren, and his great grandchildren whom he spent all of his time with.

Cal will be Loved and Missed by all!

Survivors include his wife Jeanette, daughters Sandy Blalack, Pam Coleman, Georgina Mandley, sons John Warne, Bryan Warne, brother Elmer Mangelsen, sisters Helen Neth, Shirley Ramhorst, Darlene McPherson, 12 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

Robert Looyenga

Robert W. Looyenga, 71, of Rapid City, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at his residence.

Robert was born Oct. 21, 1939, in Emmons County, N.D., the son of William and Dorothy (VanBeek) Looyenga. He graduated from high school at Pollock and then attended and graduated from Hope College in Holland, Mich. He received his masters degree and his doctorate degree in analytical chemistry from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich.

Robert married Marilyn Fugazzotto on June 29, 1963. He taught middle school math in Mandan, N.D., and later in Ellicottville, N.Y. He also taught high school chemistry in Sacramento, Calif.

The family moved to Rapid City in 1972 and he taught analytical chemistry at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for 25 years. He was a forensic chemist for the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and the Rapid City Police Dept.

He was very active in community affairs. Christian missions and music were his passions.

He was an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving on numerous committees and singing in the church choir. He was a member of the Dakota Choral Union and Kantari Joyful Noise. He enjoyed his garden and working in his yard.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Rapid City; four children, W. Paul Looyenga of Rapid City, Judith Looyenga of Rapid City, Mark Looyenga of Huntsville, Ala., and Suzanne Norton of Rapid City; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Faye Ryckman and Donna Heckelsmiller, both of Pollock; and one brother, Lowell Looyenga of Mobridge.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 15, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rapid City with burial following at Mount Calvary cemetery in Rapid City.

A memorial has been established for the Gideons International, Black Hills Camp.

Arrangements were with Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Leona (Schelske) Pietz, 99
February 28, 1917 - September 12, 2016

Funeral services for Leona Pietz were held September 16 at Friedens Reformed Church in Tripp.

Koehn Bros. Funeral Home of Parkston was in charge of arrangements.

Leona Pietz was born February 28, 1917, to Adolph and Emelia (Schnabel) Schelske on the family farm near Parkston. She was a helper to her mother and her father.

She was united in marriage to Theo J. Pietz February 27, 1938, in Menno. Through their married life, they lived in many different places including Minnesota, Howard, Parkston, California, Tripp and Rapid City. Through these many stops, she worked as a cook’s helper, waitress, helped Ted on the farm and eventually at Raven Industries, retiring at age 80.

In 2008, she published a book, Memories of a Bootlegger’s Daughter, a true account of her life growing up on the farm near Parkston during the dust bowl days and the depression.

She died Monday, September 12, at the Good Samaritan Society, Tripp. She attained the age of 99 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Derald) Schnabel, Tripp; granddaughter, Danae (Todd) Pearce, Denver, Colorado; two great-grandsons, Benjamin and Ethan; two brothers, Alton Schelske, Parkston, and Elmer Schelske, Menno; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Ervin.
