SPEARFISH — Donald D. Hoffman, beloved husband, father and friend, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2001, at his Lower Valley home with members of his family at his side. He and his family have been residents of Spearfish for 50 years, where he was active in community and business organizations and as a member and leader in the Spearfish United Methodist Church.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sept. 18, 2001, at the United Methodist Church, Spearfish, with Rev. Kip Roozen officiating. Memorial gifts may be designated for Harris Memorial College, the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Men or the charity of choice.
Don was born on July 27, 1924, in Mitchell, S.D., and spent his childhood on the family homestead south of Mitchell near Ethan, S.D. He attended the Tyler school during these years. After the death of his mother and the loss of the family's farm during the early 1930s, he spent seventh and eighth grades in Miles City, Mont., living with his aunt and her family. He returned to Ethan for his high school years and lived with the Willard Mohr and Glen and Lula Huffman families, where he worked for his room and board. Following graduation from Ethan High School in 1942, he went to Seattle, Wash., to work as a machinist at the Todd Shipyards in as part of the growing WW II effort. In the spring of 1943, he volunteered for service in the U.S. Army. After a brief stint learning that baking bread was not his military calling, he joined the Army Corps of Engineers and served in India until the end of the war.
In September 1946, he entered the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and graduated in 1950 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. In 1951, he joined Fred Brady in the establishment of Brady Engineering/Consultants in Spearfish. His engineering career included designing and supervising the first major installation of curbs, gutters and paved streets outside of downtown Spearfish, as well as leading the surveying and design of many of the new campgrounds and other modernized facilities constructed in Yellowstone Park during the 1960s. He was later a founding member of the Alliance of Architects and Engineers prior to retiring in 1987.
He was active in numerous community and business groups, including the Boy Scouts, American Legion, Lion's Club, Snapper's Club, and an investment club. For years, he planted flowers and carried water from a nearby irrigation ditch to make his own contribution toward beautifying Spearfish. This location later became the RSVP Garden. He spent 18 years as a member of the Board of Directors for Lookout Memorial Hospital and was on the Board of Directors for Horizons, Inc. for many years.
The United Methodist Church played a key part in his life. In addition to being a lay member of the church, he was on the Building Committee that spearheaded the major building expansion and renovation of the Church and was a member of the United Methodist Men. In addition to his church, he loved camping, gardening, fishing, traveling and spending time at the family cabin in Silver City, S.D. He was especially proud of the work that he did for the students at Harris Memorial College in the Philippines and the repair and improvement of the family's cabin.
In 1946, he began the most important adventure of his life when he met Joann Joyce Janda. They were married
in Rapid City, S.D., in 1948 and began a family, whom he supported and encouraged in their lives for all of his life. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joann; his sister Florence; his three sons, Steven (and wife Claudia), Michael (and wife Marilyn), and Terry (and wife Lynne); his daughter Holly (and husband David) Heintz; his "adapted" Filipino daughters, Cerna (and Mark) Rand, Analyn (and Brian) Jablo, and Alma Mercy (and Tony) Gioketo; and his 11 grandchildren. He also hosted two African students earning their degrees at BHSC, Girma Bekele from Ethiopia and Joseph Udofia from Nigeria.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lena (Gammill) and Carl F. Hoffman; brothers Robert and Charles; sister Mary; and a stillborn son.
His family knows that he has crossed over to a place where the tomatoes are always red, creeping jenny is really just another pretty flower and Nugget Creek runs year around in the light of God's love.
Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish, has been entrusted with arrangements.
