Beryl Heckert

STURGIS — Beryl Heckert, 87, Sturgis, died Friday,

Dec. 14, 2001, at Sturgis Community Health Care Center.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Ramona Hope and Dallas Alsdurf, both of Arizona, and Terry Alsdurf, Sturgis.

A memorial service for her and her husband, Ray

Heckert, will be next spring, with inurnment at White Owl cemetery.

Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Sturgis is in charge of arrangements.

Robert D. Cooper

RAPID CITY — Robert D. Cooper, 71, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Verlie Cooper, Box Elder; one daughter, Valerie Hoffman, Sturgis; two sons, Terry Cooper, Box Elder, and Ted Cooper, Sioux Falls; two brothers, Billy Cooper, Denver, and Barry Cooper, Washington, D.C.; one sister, Nancy Anderson, Maine; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Inurnment will be at a later date at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Rochelle Dianne Devine

PIERRE — Rochelle Dianne Devine, 40, Pierre, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

Survivors include one son, Sean Devine, Pierre; one daughter, Ariane Devine, Pierre; and three brothers, Charles Devine Jr. and James Devine, both of Pierre, and Wayne Chasing Crow, Bishop, Calif.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pierre.

Feigum Funeral Home of Pierre is in charge of arrangements.

Max M. Grove

RAPID CITY — Max M. Grove, 82, Rapid City, died at his residence Monday, Dec. 17, 2001.

Max Melvin Grove was born on April 19, 1919, at Dell Rapids, S. Dak., the son of Dr. Martin M. and Grace (Fisk) Grove. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1938. He graduated from South Dakota State University in 1942. Max was married to Ardelle Solem at Madison, Minnesota, on June 3, 1944. They made their home in San Francisco while Max served in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Admiral Benson and the APA American Legion. The couple returned to Sioux Falls in 1946, where Max was on active duty with the Navy. Max and Evans Nord were appointed to establish the Naval Reserve in Sioux Falls. In 1950 he attended Optometry College in Memphis, Tennessee. He practiced Optometry in S. Dak. from 1954 until his retirement in 1996.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Ardelle Grove, Rapid City; two sons, Stephen Grove, and his wife, Marla, Atlanta, Georgia, and Marshall Grove, and his wife, Julie, Yakima, Washington; one daughter, Stephanie Dean, and her husband, Kirk, Fargo, N.D.; and seven grandchildren, Tim Dean, and his wife, Katy, Richmond, Virginia, Greg Dean, and his wife, Jami, Fargo, N. Dak., Sarah Hovda, and her husband, Michael, Sioux Falls,

Gina Grove, Alexandria, Virginia, Andrew Grove, New York City, QuAnna Grove and Meeghan Grove, both of Yakima, Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday,

Dec. 29, 2001, at the South Canyon Lutheran Church, with Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating. Private inurnment will be at the Black Hills National cemetery with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 Honor Guard.

A Memorial has been established.

Services are under the direction of the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Phyllis Mae Kramer

RAPID CITY — Phyllis Mae Kramer, 60, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Milton Kramer, Rapid City; two sons, Charles Kramer, Aurora, Colo., and Steven Kramer, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; her father, Milbert Ellwein, Aberdeen; one brother, Donald Ellwein, Wanatchee, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Ralph ‘Tubby' Carr

SPEARFISH — Ralph "Tubby" Carr, 81, Spearfish and former longtime resident of Lead, died December 18, 2001, at his home in Spearfish.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 20, 2001, at Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2001, at Christ Church Episcopal in Lead, with Rev. Fr. Ron Hennies officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Black Hills National cemetery, Sturgis, with full military honors provided by the Spearfish Honor Guard. A Memorial has been established.

Tubby was born March 14, 1920, on the family homestead near Whitetail, to Samuel and Lillian (Furze) Carr. He attended school in Lead and Hanna until 1929, when his father was killed in a hunting accident. The family moved to Spearfish for a short while before moving to Piedmont, where he graduated from the eighth grade. He attended Lead High School for three years until joining the CCC camp at Orman Dam. He completed his education, receiving his GED in California when he was 42 years old. He continued his education, attending San Pablo Junior College and classes at the Alameda Navy base.

On June 12, 1941, Tubby married Mel Drucilla Erikson. In February of 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in

Europe. He became a prisoner of war in Germany and received the Purple Heart award for his bravery. In September 1945 he

received an honorable discharge, returned to Lead, and worked for Homestake Mining Company until May 1962. Tubby, Mel and their children, Sharren and Randie, moved to California and he worked for the Oakland Naval Supply base until 1971, when he retired. They returned to the Black Hills area in May of 1972 and lived on the family farm on Elk Creek. In 1998, the Carrs moved to Spearfish and they enjoyed long walks with friends, family, and his dog Freckles.

Tubby served as Lawrence County Commissioner for 11 years, a member of the Lawrence County Airport Board, the Galena School Board, and a member of VFW Post No. 5969, Deadwood. Tubby, along with his wife, Mel, enjoyed taking an active role in running the Roubaix Sunday School.

Grateful for having shared in Tubby's life are his wife, Mel Carr, Spearfish; two daughters, Randie Luond, Rapid City, and Sharren (and Don) Carr Meirs, San Diego, Calif.; and one sister, Charlotte McLaughlin, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother in infancy.

Fidler Funeral Chapels of Lead and Spearfish have been

entrusted with arrangements.

Elmer H. Trautman

SPEARFISH — Elmer H. Trautman, 80, Spearfish, died of natural causes on December 18, 2001, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Elmer Henry Trautman was born September 17, 1921 at St. Charles, SD.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; his son, Larry and his wife Renee Trautman, Spearfish; his daughters, Arlys Bartholomew and her husband Don of San Diego, CA, and Alice Trautman of Ocala, FL; and four granddaughters. One sister, Alma (Warren) Sylliaasen, Rapid City, SD; and four brothers, Harris (Marcella) Trautman of Marysville, WA, Harold (Phyllis) Trautman of Mesa, AZ, Emil (Alma) Trautman of Rapid City, SD, and Jerry (Janice) Trautman of Battle Creek, MI.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Emmett and Etrine.

A Memorial has been established at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Spearfish, SD.

Visitation will be at the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish on Thursday, December 20, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, December 21, 2001 at the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish with Rev. Kent Stillson officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis with military honors by the Spearfish American Legion Post # 164 and VFW Post # 5860 Honor Guard.

Linda Marie Sundstrom Babb

NEWELL — Linda Marie Sundstrom Babb, 79, Newell, died Tuesday evening, December 18, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Sturgis.

Visitation will be Friday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and Saturday one hour prior to the services at the church in Newell.

Funeral services will be Saturday, December 22, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Newell with Rev. Deb Geelsdottir officiating. Burial will follow at Hope cemetery.

Linda was born February 20, 1922, at Mud Butte, SD, to Carl and Elsie (Johnson) Sundstrom. She was the third in the family of nine children. Riding horseback in the Mud Buttes was one of the family pastimes, and she spent much of her childhood caring for her younger siblings.

She attended the Mud Butte Rural School for eight years.

On October 17, 1939, she married Alvin "Buster" Babb of the Twilight area, and she spent the rest of her life on their ranch 25 miles northeast of Newell. Some of their early married life was spent in a sheep wagon. Linda became a full partner in the ranch operation of raising sheep and cattle.

Despite the hardships of drought, blizzards, prairie fire and rattlesnakes, she loved the ranch life and the livestock. She helped with lambing, haying, milking cows, branding calves and other outdoor tasks, but she still appreciated and wore attractive clothes, jewelry, and makeup. Being an excellent seamstress, she sewed for herself, daughters, and grandchildren.

In 1993, she traveled with her daughters and two granddaughters to visit the childhood homes of her father in Sweden and maternal grandmother in Norway.

Water was often scarce, but she never gave up in her effort to grow trees and flowers. Since her retirement from ranching, she enjoyed tole painting and sharing her works of art with family and friends.

Linda was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, AARP, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include two daughters, Diana and her husband, Ronald Glover, Rapid City, and Bonnie Lange, Sturgis; one son and his wife, Gary and Lawren Babb who live on the ranch; eight grandchildren, Lissa and Bob Moeller, Ravenna, NE, Liana and Kevin Gordon, Provo, UT, Jim and Bridget Lange, North Platte, NE, Bradley and Gina Babb, Ord, NE, Linda and Jeff Kaiser, Mendota Heights, MN, John and Teresa Glover, Moorhead, MN, Susan Glover, Bayfield, WI, and Bryce Lange, Denver, CO; one step-grandchild, Brett and LynnAnn Day, Midvale, UT; nine great-grandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include Juno Sundstrom, Moorcroft, WY, Ernest Sundstrom, Apple Valley, CA, Sally O'Dea, Vale, SD, and LaVera Chord, Black Hawk, SD. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Gladys Keene, Sturgis, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Elsie (Johnson) Sundstrom; her husband, Alvin "Buster" Babb; two brothers, Clyde and Wayne; two sisters, Sylvia and Elsie "Babe", one grandchild; one stepgrandchild, and one step-great-grandchild.

Memorial money will be given to a speaker system at First Lutheran Church, the Mud Butte Volunteer Fire Department and the Newell Volunteer Fire Department.

Carl V. Henrickson

RAPID CITY — Carl V. Henrickson, 84, of Rapid City, died Tuesday, December 18, 2001, at a local nursing home.

Carl V. Henrickson was born in Cordova, Alaska on August 10, 1907 to Victor and Anna (Markstrom) Henrickson. He graduated from high school in Seattle, Washington and in 1938 graduated from Whitman College.

He served his country in WWII on Midway Island and was recalled for the Korean War finishing his Navy service with the rank of Lt. Commander.

Carl was married to LaVonne LaCroix, from Elk Point, S.D., in Long Beach, CA, on March 14, 1947. The couple raised three girls. He was employed as a district sales manager for the United States Chamber of Commerce for 39 years.

Carl was very active in the Presbyterian Church, Rotary as well as other philanthropic organizations, including volunteering for the Tulsa Red Cross Disaster Relief Department.

He snow skied until he was 65 and was an active member of the YMCA for 40 years.

Carl dearly valued his family and friends and rejoiced in the beauty and wonders of God's earth and wanted to share it with all. He will always be remembered and cherished for his goodness. Carl was loving, kind, patient, and generous and was always full of enthusiasm and optimism. He tempered it with a gentle spirit, and was truly the strongest, yet most fair and gentle man we knew. We know we are poorer here on earth, but heaven is richer for his presence there.

Carl is survived by his wife, LaVonne Henrickson, Rapid City; three daughters, Shannon Parham, and her special friend, Jerry Peacock; Beth Sartorius, and her husband, Dale, all of Rapid City and Linda Agather and her husband, Max, Kalispell, Montana; a brother, Jack Henrickson and his wife, Mary Jane, Anchorage, Alaska; and 3 grandchildren, Jenny Cassidy, Katie Parham and Justin Parham all of Rapid City.

Graveside services and inurnment will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis with Rev. Kenn Cragg officiating. Military honors will be provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City. Family and friends will meet at 10:15 a.m. at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home to form a procession to go to the cemetery.

Jack Wesley Anderson

RAPID CITY — Jack Wesley Anderson, 73, Rapid City, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include one stepson, Richard Savold, Nordland, Wash.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Mount Moriah cemetery, Sundance, Wyo.

Behrens Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.
