Zona Fills the Pipe

PINE RIDGE — Zona Fills the Pipe-Pte San Wambli Win (White Buffalo Eagle Woman), 92, passed away on September 15, 2001, at her home in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.

Zona was born in Kyle, South Dakota, on October 28, 1908. Her parents were Frank Afraid of Horses and Lucy Red Cloud. Zona was always proud that she was a direct descendent of three great Oglala chiefs: Red Cloud, Afraid of Horses, and Little Wound. She recently attended an honoring event in the Nebraska State Capitol, where Chief Red Cloud became a member of the Nebraska Hall of Fame, and she spoke about her great-grandfather.

Zona attended No.19 Day School in Kyle, and rode horseback to attend school. She also attended schools at Pine Ridge, Flandreau, and Chemewa Indian School in Oregon, where she earned letters for playing basketball. Zona was a strong supporter of education of Indian people and she encouraged young Indian people to get their education.

She worked for over 20 years at the Oglala Community Boarding School in Pine Ridge as a dorm matron, seamstress and laundress. She was the Director of the Oglala Sioux Tribal Arts and Crafts Shop in the early 1970s. She was a 4-H leader for a number of years on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

She was a very traditional Lakota woman, as well as a very devout Episcopalian. Her traditional beliefs and those of Christianity were a natural fit for her, as many of the beliefs of the Lakota and Christianity are similar, the belief in the Supreme being, good and evil spirits, and an afterlife. She never missed the annual Niobara Convocation Meeting or a Diocese Convention, and attended many events of the Episcopal Church. She was nominated for the "Episcopal Church Woman of the Year" and received a plaque from Bishop Creighton Robertson.

Zona is survived by her children, Starlet and Peter Pipe, Pine Ridge, S.D.; her sister, Sadie Janis, Pine Ridge, S.D.; niece Darlene Shortbull, Rapid City, S.D.; grandsons Paul, John and Frank Shortbull and granddaughter Vanessa Shortbull, and great-grandson Brandon Shortbull, all of Rapid City, S.D.; Lakota brothers Oliver Red Cloud, Bernard Red Cloud, Burgess Red Cloud and Delphine Red Cloud-Brown, all of Pine Ridge, S.D.; Lakota Sister; and the Hand families, Horn Cloud families, Fills the Pipe Families, Youngman families, Red Cloud families, Power families, Poor Thunder Families, and those who called her "Unci, " meaning Grandmother.

She will be missed by her relatives and friends on the Pine Ridge Reservation, in South Dakota, and the friends who came to visit her throughout the United States and internationally.

In January, a story was written by Zona and her sister Sadie in the Rapid City Journal titled "My Sister, My Friend." This story depicted their life history and the great love they had for one another.

A one-night wake service will be held on Wednesday, September 19, at 6 p.m. in the Pine Ridge High School Gymnasium. Services will be at 10 a.m. in the gymnasium on Thursday, September 20. Burial will follow at the St. Barnabas cemetery in Kyle, South Dakota.

Zona's death marks the end stage of a generation of Lakotas who possessed the best of their people, who spoke the language, knew their tribal culture and history, and wanted the best for their people. When the very last of this generation passes away, a great treasure will have been lost to the Lakota people and to all people in this country. As one of the last Elders of the Fourth Generation journeys home, a great treasure of teachings, stories and knowledge is lost to the Lakota and non-Lakota people of this country.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.
