PIERRE - Donna J. Blumhardt, 53, Pierre, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Maryhouse Sub-Acute Center in Pierre.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Blumhardt, Pierre; one daughter, Lorna Blumhardt Robinson, Pierre; one son, Leon Blumhardt, Pierre; her mother, Christena Abbott; one sister, Grace Fields; one brother, Ray Abbott; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 2, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Faith Lutheran Church in Pierre.

Burial will follow at Riverside cemetery in Pierre.

Grace E. John

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Grace E. John, 86, Ann Arbor and formerly of Sisseton, S.D., and Rapid City, died Monday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor.

Survivors include one son, Fred L. John, Whitmore Lake, Mich.

She was cremated. No services were held.

Generations Funeral and Cremation Services of Berkley, Mich., was in charge of arrangements.

Wilma A. Miller

RAPID CITY - Wilma A. Miller, 74, Rapid City, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include her husband, Don Miller, Rapid City; three sons, Raymond Miller, Laramie, Wyo., Harold Miller, Rapid City, and Larry Miller, Fort Collins, Colo.; two brothers, Gene Parker, Elliot, Iowa, and Gerald Parker, Sebring, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Beth Raber

BELLE FOURCHE - Beth Raber, 37, Belle Fourche, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Monte Raber, Belle Fourche; two children, Kathryn Raber and Kurtis Raber, both of Belle Fourche; her parents, Ron and Phyllis Watson, Sundance, Wyo.; one brother, Doug Watson, Sundance; and one sister, Ronda Fox, Englewood, Colo.

Arrangements are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.

Mark Kindle

OGLALA — Mark Kindle, 80, Oglala, died Sunday, Sept. 9, in Chadron, Neb.

Survivors include three sons, Ceferino Kindle and Fred Kindle, both of Oglala, and Benjamin Kindle, Pine Ridge; four daughters, Kate Kindle and Katherine Starr, both of Oglala, Minnie Kindle, Columbus, Ohio, and Audrey Wallace, Dallas; one sister, Pauline Kindle, Oglala; 26 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

A two-night wake began Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Our Lady of the Sioux Catholic Hall in Oglala.

Services were held Friday, Sept. 14, at Makasan Presbyterian Church in Oglala, with the Rev. Asa Wilson and the Rev. Simon Looking Elk officiating. Everett Poor Thunder and Marvin Helper will officiate over traditional ceremonies.

Burial will be at Makasan Presbyterian cemetery in Oglala.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Ray Ellis Burney

SUNDANCE, Wyo. — Ray Ellis Burney, 68, of Sundance, passed away Friday, September 14, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Memorial services will be held at the Church of the Nazarene in Hemingford, Neb., on Wednesday, September 19, at 11 a.m. Visitation services will be held at the Whitted Funeral Chapel in Shelby, Mont., on Friday, September 21, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., to conclude with a graveside service at the Crown Hill cemetery in Cut Bank, Mont., at 11 a.m. A reception will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Cut Bank following the graveside service. A memorial fund has been established in the name of Ray Burney for the Cancer Care Institute at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. Memorials may be sent to 353 Fairmont Blvd., Rapid City, SD 57701.

Ray was born August 22, 1933, in Springfield, Mo., to the late Cyril and Marie (Tutor) Burney. He grew up and was educated in Hemingford, Neb., working on the family farm. He learned to fly at Alliance, Neb. Ray served with the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 and was a tank operator in Germany and Austria. He attended church and shared his faith with others. He married Eva Snyder in 1957 and they later divorced in 1973. Ray lived in Cut Bank, Mont., in the early '70s. He married Bernice Hoffman in 1974 and they divorced in 1992. Ray was a self-employed helicopter pilot since the early 1970s and owned his own flying service for the past 20 years. Ray enjoyed flying, traveling, fishing and visiting with people.

His two daughters, Shawn and Ray Christaens of Kevin, Mont., and Sheryl and Scott Cook of Soldotna, Alaska; his two sons, Steve Burney of Cut Bank, Mont., and Shane and Jama Burney of Cascade, Mont.; and two grandchildren survive Ray. One sister, Bonnie and Eldon Clark of Alliance, Neb., and five brothers, Donald Burney of Alliance, Neb., Charles Burney of Upton, Wyo., Paul and Emily Burney of Carter, Mont., Larry and Linda Burney and Jim and Becky Burney of Cheyenne, Wyo., also survive him. His parents, two brothers, and two nephews preceded Ray in death.

Mary L. Johnson

BISON — Mary L. Johnson, 63, Bison, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, en route to Hettinger, N.D.

Survivors include three sons, Leslie Johnson, Lyndel Johnson and Nathan Johnson, all of Bison; and one daughter, Nadine Kanne, Rochelle, Ill.

Arrangements are pending with Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home of Lemmon.

Dale Hovland

RAPID CITY - Dale Hovland, 59, Rapid City, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include two sons, Mitchell of Dallas, Texas, and Michael of Laramie, Wyo.; and one brother, Ivan Hovland, Central City.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Ken M. Hansen

RAPID CITY - Ken M. Hansen, 39, Rapid City, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, near Piedmont.

Survivors include one daughter, Lindsy Hansen, Rapid City; his mother and stepfather, Rachel and Robert J. Moore, Rapid City; his father and stepmother, Glenn M. and Leasa Hansen, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; two brothers, Mark S. Hansen, Rapid City, and Kerry Hansen, Liberty Lakes, Wash; and one sister, Jennifer Moore, Rapid City.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Jane Hoyt Lamb
Jun 15 1918 - May 31 2010

Jane Hoyt Lamb, 91, of Hill City, South Dakota, died at Rapid City Regional Hospital on May 31, 2010. She was cremated and a private family memorial service was held at the Hill City cemetery on June 1, 2010. A celebration of life ceremony is planned for Sunday, June 13, 2010 Noon-2:00pm at the Hill City Senior Citizen Center.

Mrs. Jane Hoyt Lamb was born on June 15, 1918 to Dr. Randal Hoyt and Jacqueline Hendrick Hoyt of New York City.

She received a B.A. from Barnard College, Columbia University, New York City, in 1940, and an M.A. from Syracuse University in 1964. She taught elementary school for 15 years in New York State, and moved to Hill City in the Black Hills of South Dakota in 1974.

She served as member and officer of several organizations, including the Friends of the Hill City Library, the Hill City Area Memorial Park, The Hill City Arts Council, The Hill City Senior Citizens, the Western Women in the Arts, and the Hill City Artforms. She has been a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship for many years.

Mrs. Lamb worked for two years for the Hill City Forest Service part time, drawing maps and botanical specimens.

She published four books, The Aerie in 1981, Imaging in 1989, and Remembrance Framed in 1992, which was the winner of the South Dakota State Poetry Society award. A fourth book, Poems by a Teenager, had been written in her years at the George Washington High School in New York City. She recorded two CD’s of her poetry accompanied by her son Charles, One Sky in 1997 and After Love in 2001. In 1999 she received the Second Bullion Award for poetry at the West River Conference of the Keystone and Area Historical Society. She also received awards for art and photography.

Mrs. Lamb is survived by a daughter, Betsy (Dave) L. Lyons of Hill City, South Dakota, and five sons: Dr. James (Vicki) W. Lamb of Dallas, Texas; Peter (Nancy) H. Lamb of Broomfield, Colorado; John (Pam) A. Lamb of Smyrna, Georgia; Richard (Andrea) H. Lamb of Conifer, Colorado; Charles (Theano) C. Lamb of Crestone, Colorado. There are six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jacqueline Hoyt Swank of Towanda, Pennsylvania and Audrey Hoyt Johnson of Ojai, California and Hill City, South Dakota, and her husband of 28 years, Dr. Walter C. Lamb of Oneida, New York.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Hill City Area Arts Council at PO Box 321, Hill City, SD 57745.

Florin Hemminger, 83

Florin W. Hemminger, 83, Pierre, passed away Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at McKennan Select Specialty Hospital, in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, with a 7 p.m. prayer and Masonic service that is open to the public at the Masonic Building in Pierre. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, in Pierre. Interment will follow at Riverside cemetery, Pierre.

Florin was born May 15, 1925, at Highmore, to Floyd and Audrey (Morford) Hemminger. He attended all eight grades of school in rural Hyde County. He attended four years of high school at the South Dakota School of Agriculture at South Dakota State College at Brookings, graduating in 1943. Florin farmed with his father and brother until 1945, when he joined the Navy, assigned as a Seabee in a construction battalion serving in the Philippine Islands. His farming skills were used for operating large equipment to rebuild roads and runways. Florin farmed from 1947 to 1954 near Highmore and Harrold.

On Aug. 16, 1950, he and Marian Krull were married in Harrold. Linda Sue was born in 1952, and they moved to Pierre in August 1954.

Florin was employed at the Pierre Power Plant, Friman Oil Co., and the United States Postal Service. He began his own window business in 1962, which grew to F.W. Hemminger Building and Supply, a statewide home improvement icon. Florin continued to work his business until his death.

Florin was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Pierre, former Pierre JCs, Kiwanis — where he had perfect attendance for the past 33 years and was named Kiwanian of the Year several years and received the Kiwanis Distinguished Service Award, VFW, Elks, American Legion, and Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce serving on the agri-interest committee.

Worshipful Brother Florin W. Hemminger was a Mason for 59 years. He was a member and past master in Harrold and also a member in Pierre. Over the last 50-plus years of Masonry, Worshipful Brother Hemminger was an active member of many Masonic organizations, including Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shrine and Order of Eastern Star. Worshipful Brother Hemminger is a past most illustrious grand master of the Grand Council of Cryptic Masons of South Dakota, past grand commander of the Grand Commander of Knights Templar of South Dakota, past grand high priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of South Dakota, grand trustee emeritus of the Grand Lodge of South Dakota. Other Masonic organizations that Worshipful Brother Hemminger belonged to are Red Cross of Constantine, Knight of the York Cross of Honor, Order of the High Priesthood, Order of Thrice Illustrious Master, Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests, Masonic Veterans’ Association and South Dakota Masonic Lodge of Research.

Florin was a leader and admired for his can-do attitude. Thus, he held leadership positions in many organizations which benefited from his vision and willingness to always take on tough challenges. He was known as someone who was always helping others to accomplish their goals, whether it was to help a child receive medical care at a Shriner’s Hospital, make certain that the Shrine Circus was successful, deliver meals-on-wheels, visit nursing home or veteran’s home residents, assist friends to attend church or other events or help his granddaughters catch an elusive salmon in the Missouri River. He was happiest when with family and close friends and when helping others.

Florin is survived by Marian, his wife of 58 and a half years, of Pierre; daughter, Linda Hemminger Fisher, and her husband, Martin, of Adair, Iowa; three granddaughters, Livia Fisher, of Sioux Falls, and Laine and Lynae Fisher, of Adair, Iowa; sisters-in-law Betty Krull and Arlene Hemminger; nephews Kim, Kip (Deb), and Keith (Lynda) Krull, Don (Sandi) Hemminger, Randy (Ida) and Rick (Wendy) Johnson; nieces Dixie (Mike) Volek, Judy (Steve) Thiesse, Roberta Tingle, Jolynn (Scott) Kuhn; and many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews and numerous close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Vira in infancy, and Vionna Johnson and brother-in-law Ivan, brother, Howard Hemminger, brother-in-law Louis Krull, mother-in-law Esther Krull Hoard and great-nephew Winston Hemminger.

Bruce Michael Helms
Aug 05 1952 - Jul 06 2010

Mike was the eldest of eight children. Born to Bruce and Midge Helms of Faith, SD.

He attended and graduated Faith High School. He traveled to, and worked with his brother Mark, in the oil fields of Wyoming. Mike met and married Corinne Bliss and together they were blessed with three beautiful girls. Carey Ann Helms, Auburn, WA, Chelsey Marie Helms, Auburn, WA, and Cassondra Margaret Hamel, Pacific, WA. All together Mike has three grandchildren: Terry (Chelsey) is 17 years old, Sage (Chelsey) is 15 years old, and Julian (Cassondra) is 7.

Unfortunately, Mike and Corinne later divorced and he then settled in Faith, SD. Mike enjoyed his life and family. He worked for Dave and June Kilby of Faith, SD and loved them greatly.

He lived for hunting, fishing, and prayer. He died in his home on July 6th, 2010. He will be forever missed.

Michael is survived by seven siblings. His two brothers are Mark Helms, Douglas, WY, and Matt Helms, Faith, SD. His five sisters are Shannon (Alan) McGinnis, Faith, SD, Sherri Reder, Rapid City, SD, Stephanie (Jeffrey) Weisbeck, Mesa, AZ, Holly (Mike) Haines, Maurine, SD, Christine (Ken) Guenther, Douglas WY, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Bruce and Midge Helms.

Mike wished for his ashes to be spread in a favorite fishing hole.

A vigil and rosary will be held at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Faith, SD on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at 7:00pm. Funeral services will be held at St. Josephs on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 10:00am.

The family extends an invitation to join them for fellowship and refreshments at the church immediately following the mass.

Paul Sweeney
(November 24, 1932 - September 19, 2011)

Paul Francis Sweeney was born on the family farm south of Presho on Nov. 24, 1932. He was the 7th child of Sylvester Sr. & Veronica Sweeney.

He died on Sept 19, 2011 at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. Funeral rite will be held at the Church of Christ the King in Presho, Thursday, Sept. 22 at 10:30 AM. Fr. Gary Orscheski will be officiating. Burial will be in Holy Angels cemetery, Presho.

Paul married Wanda Halverson on Nov. 25, 1951 in Kennebec. At that time Paul worked for Anderson Gas in Presho. In April 1952, Paul and Wanda moved to Presho where they spent their 59 years together. In January 2011 Paul moved to a Nursing Home and in April, 2011 Wanda moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to him.

Over the years Paul also worked for England Construction, Hubbard Implement and Farmers Union Oil, all in Presho. He was the manager at Farmers Union for 10 years. In March, 1974, Paul and Wanda took over management of Cen Dak Builders and later purchased the business. After 27 years of business at Cen Dak, they sold the business in March, 2001.

After retirement, Paul worked for several different farmers and ranchers part time.

Paul also spent countless hours with his registered quarter horses, riding, breeding & training them. They gave him much enjoyment and were loved and cared for just like family. His horses were his pride & joy. Paul rode his horses in many parades over the years in Presho, Vivian and Hettinger, ND.

In 1991 Paul and Wanda established "Sweeney's Bed & Breakfast" and ran it until January 2011. Paul enjoyed visiting with their many guests over the years and especially their pheasant hunter friends who came year and year.

Surviving Paul are his wife Wanda, Sioux Falls; children Paulette Haar, Hettinger, ND; Kirby (Barb) Sweeney, Pierre; Darcie (Perry) Rivard, Sioux Falls; Larissa Sweeney, Seattle, WA; Kelcey (Kris) Sweeney, Sioux Falls; five grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 8 step-great grandchildren and 3 step-great great grandchildren.

Paul's surviving siblings are Martha Blake, Pardenne Prairie, MO; Jerry (Betty) Sweeney, Kennewick, WA; Mike (Wanda Lee) Sweeney, Presho; and Leroy (Helen) Sweeney, Lakewood, CO. Preceding Paul in death were his parents Sylvester Sr. and Veronica Sweeney; one son, Rocky Sweeney; brothers Sylvester Jr. and Lawrence Sweeney; Sisters: Patricia Konzem and Dolores Plueger and his in-laws Emil and Ruth Halvorson.
