Sadie Hoar
HOT SPRINGS — Sadie Marie Hoar, 96, formerly of Hot Springs, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Westhills Village in Rapid City.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Hoar, Temecula, Calif., Darrell Hoar, Rapid City, and Donald Hoar, Poynette, Wis.; two daughters, Anice Reiman, Altoona, Wis., and Patty Brunner, Rapid City; one brother, Charlie Stearns, Hot Springs; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at The United Church in Edgemont, with the Rev. Elizabeth Jassmann officiating. Burial will follow at Edgemont cemetery.
Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Edgemont is in charge of arrangements.
Jean Breitag
RAPID CITY — Jean Breitag, 81, Rapid City, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at a Rapid City nursing home.
She was born Oct. 18, 1919, at Aberdeen, S.D., the daughter of Myron C. and Carol (Keller) DeLapp. She grew up at Mobridge, S.D., and graduated from school at Mobridge.
She moved to Rapid City as a young woman and was employed at EAFB as a secretary with Civil Service for a number of years.
Jean was a private person who was loved by her family and close circle of friends. In her later years, she lived with her sister, Margaret Johnson, in Rapid City. She enjoyed collecting dolls and was known at Westhills Village as the "Doll Lady."
Survivors include her sister, Margaret Johnson, Rapid City; a niece, Candace Christofferson and her husband, Gene Hufford, and their family, and a nephew, Bob Johnson and his wife, Linda, and their family.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ted Huffman and the Rev. Susan Huffman officiating.
Ida Mary Koskela
RAPID CITY — Ida Mary Koskela, 80, Rapid City, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Koskela, Rapid City; one son, Ronald Koskela, Ocean Side, Calif.; one daughter, Debra Brandt, Rapid City; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.
Hilda Harris
PIERRE — Hilda Harris, 85, Pierre, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Scotty Philip cemetery in Fort Pierre.
Warren Sanborn
DRAPER — Warren Sanborn, 80, Draper, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Monday, Sept. 24, at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Murdo.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at United Methodist Church in Draper. Burial will be at Winner cemetery in Winner.
Edith Beaird Thorpe
RAPID CITY — Edith Beaird Thorpe of Rapid City died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at a local nursing home at the age of 93.
Edith Margaret (Beaird) Thorpe was born Sept. 25, 1908, in Walthill, Neb., the second oldest daughter of Bud and Estelle Beaird. Edith started grade school in Walthill. She grew up in rural South Dakota when her family moved to South Dakota. The Beaird family first lived and operated the Farley Ranch on the Base Line Road, south of New Underwood, and then managed the Duhamel Ranch on Cuny Table.
She attended National College for a short time and after marriage was a homemaker and mother. Later, she worked as a checker at National Tea grocery store in Rapid City, Red Owl grocery store in Rapid City, and her final place of employment was First Bank of South Dakota in Rapid City as a teller until she retired in 1973.
Edith married
Benjamin L. Thorpe on Nov. 26, 1929, in Rapid City. They began their life together in Sioux City, Iowa, where Ben was a chef in a cafe and then in 1932 began ranching on Cuny Table. During this time, their daughters were born and started school.
During their sixty years together, they not only ranched on Cuny Table south of Scenic but ran a refinery in Fort Pierre and another refinery in Douglas, Wyo. They moved back to Rapid City in 1947, where they both worked and raised their family of two daughters.
Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters, Nadine and husband Kenny Canfield, Ida and husband Alvin Holst, all of Rapid City; five granddaughters, Carol Whiting, Connie and Marv Potthoff, Cari Downen, all of Rapid City, Tandy Nash and Wendy Holst of Mesa, Ariz.; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters-in-law LaVaughn Beaird of Rapid City, Fern Jennewein of Billings, Mont., Donna Beaird of Amity, Ore., and Dorothy Beaird of Rogers, Ark.; and brother-in-law Leslie Cuny of Rapid City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Ben L. Thorpe, Edith was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers, four sisters and one great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be today from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City and then on Saturday for one hour before services.
Services are set for Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Kirk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Cheryl Stewart officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City. A memorial has been established.
Victor Young
VIVIAN — Victor Young, 79, Vivian, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at home.
Survivors include his wife, Verna Young, Vivian; two sons, Robert Young, Spearfish, and Ron Young, Pierre; one daughter, Marietta Squires, Pierre; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Mary Boehmer, Parkston; and one brother, Norbert Young, Parkston.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at the church.
Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Home of Pierre is in charge of arrangements.
Clifford G. Foster
BELLE FOURCHE — Clifford G. Foster, 67, Belle Fourche, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at home.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara "Pat" Foster, Belle Fourche; two sons, Wayne Foster and Gene Foster, both of Alliance, Neb.; four grandchildren; and one brother, Gifford "Bub" Foster, Torrington, Wyo.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche and for one hour before services at the church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Paul Howard officiating.
Erwin ‘Hap' Herrmann
WINNER — Erwin "Hap" Herrmann, 81, Winner, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Winner Regional Nursing Home.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Herrmann, Winner; three daughters, Diane Herrmann, Janice Huggins and Janell Millian, all of Winner; one brother, Vernon Herrmann, Millboro; three sisters, Katherine Denny, Grand Island, Neb., Marie Palmer, Brandon, and Gladys Rajewich, Gregory; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Mason Funeral Home in Winner.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Winner cemetery.
Rosina Sleeping Bear Simpson
AURORA, Colo. — Rosina Sleeping Bear Simpson, 59, Aurora, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, in Aurora.

Simpson, Aurora and formerly of Lead, S.D.

Emil Louis Staedtler
HOT SPRINGS — Emil Louis Staedtler, 84, Hot Springs, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center following a brief illness.
Louis was born in Albert Lea, Minn., on April 8, 1917, to Fredierick and Minnie (Olson) Staedtler.
When Louis was small, his family moved to a farm at Melon, Wis., where he attended school. Louis was a WWII veteran, and he received many medals and citations during his tour of duty, including the Purple Heart.
He married
Janet Kupczyk on Dec. 6, 1946. They lived in Huron, where Louis was a railroad engineer for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. Louis retired in 1977, and they moved to Custer so they could be close to their children and grandchildren.
Louis is survived by his son, James, and his wife,
Carol, Rapid City; his daughter, Marjie Eckholt of Hot Springs; six grandchildren, Joseph Staedtler, Fort Collins, Colo., Becky Staedtler, Michael Staedtler and Patrick Staedtler, all of Rapid City, Kari and her husband, Rob Heckel, and great-grandson Teigen, Jacksonville, N.C., and Adam Eckholt, Hot Springs; and his sisters, Clara Bullock, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Pauline King, Las Vegas, Nev., and Laura Miller, Marshfield, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet; his parents; his brothers, Fredierick and Carl; and his sisters, Margaret Anderson, Lena Schutte and Louise Schaduck.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at the Rooks McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Custer cemetery.
Rooks McColley's Chapel of the Hills is in charge of the arrangements.
Velma Nenaber
BELLE FOURCHE — Velma Nenaber, 85, Belle Fourche, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Belle Fourche Long Term Care Center.
Survivors include her son, Ron Nenaber of Belle Fourche; and three grandchildren.

Dorothy Nielsen
WINNER — Dorothy Nielsen, 83, Winner, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Winner Regional Healthcare Center.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Nielsen, Winner; three sons, William Nielsen, Winner, Douglas Nielsen, Wichita, Kan., and David Nielsen, Nahant; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Miriam Caton, Onterio, Ore., and Virginia McArthur, Salem, Miss.

Vera Anderson
BUFFALO GAP — Vera Anderson, 87, Buffalo Gap, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at home.
Survivors include two daughters, C.J. "Freddy" Clark, Buffalo Gap, and Lori Russell, Casper, Wyo.; one son, Eddie Anderson, Stayton, Ore.; and two sisters, Sally Anderson, Rapid City, and
Elma Curtis, Pierre.
