SPEARFISH — Ilene Fay Fish, 59, Spearfish, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, in Spearfish.

Survivors include two brothers, Wayne Fish, Lead, and Roger Fish, Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from noon until service time Saturday, Sept. 8, at Presbyterian Memorial Church in Pollock.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Burial will be at Spring

Valley cemetery in Pollock.

Chaput Memorial Chapel of Lead is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel S. Courtney

ALZADA, Mont. — Hazel S. Courtney, 69, Alzada, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City.

Survivors include her husband, James Courtney, Alzada; three daughters, Lezlie Moore, Vivian, Colleen Yates, British Columbia, and Jeanne Wombold, Black Hawk; one son, Thomas Courtney, Alzada; 13 grandchildren; one brother, Ned Summers, Ekalaka, Mont.; and one sister, Betty Loken, Capitol, Mont.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche, S.D.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Hans Sacrison officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.

Leah Zoe Brown

SPEARFISH - Leah Zoe Brown, 82, Spearfish, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Survivors include two sons, William Brown, Omaha, Neb., and Dan Brown, Minneapolis; one brother, Maurice Truman, Rapid City; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

Lydia Zimmerman

SPEARFISH - Lydia Zimmerman, 80, Spearfish and formerly of Belle Fourche, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Her husband, Theopil "Ted" Zimmerman, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and for one hour before services Thursday, Dec. 6, at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Hans Sacrison officiating.

Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Richard 'Dick' Simpson

ALADDIN, Wyo. - Richard "Dick" Simpson, 68, died Nov. 11, 2001, at Wyoming Medical Center, Casper, Wyo. Richard, a retired Millwright, was a regular at casinos in Deadwood and Millstone Restaurant in Spearfish, as well as a board member of Bearlodge Multiple Use Association. He is survived by his sister, Jean Waterloo of Richmond, Mich., and daughter, Laura Simpson of Colorado Springs, Colo. The memorial service was held Nov. 18 in Hulett, Wyo. Memorials may be made to Bearlodge Multiple Use Association, P.O. Box 404, Hulett, WY 82720, or Masterson Place, 2325 E. Yellowstone Casper, WY 82609.

Cora Ellen Buchholz

RAPID CITY - Cora Ellen Buchholz, 78, Rapid City, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the Sturgis Community Hospital.

She was born March 5, 1923, the daughter of William and May (DeBurn) Buchholz, on her parents' ranch north of Philip, S.D.

Cora moved to Rapid City at the end of her teen-age years and was employed as one of the first women taxi drivers in Rapid City in 1944. She was employed at Plowman Cleaners, owned a french fry business, a package liquor store and managed a gas station near Baken Park. She was also employed by the Rapid City Journal. She lived in Rapid Valley for several years and was well known in that area.

Cora owned several antique cars and enjoyed showing them at car shows. She also enjoyed the Powder Puff car races and was often the winner. In later years, she moved to the Keystone Retirement Home, Sturgis, S.D., where she lived until suffering a stroke that took her life.

Cora enjoyed ice skating and prided herself on being able to skate on the pond near East Boulevard on her 70th birthday.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Viken, Nisland, S.D., and nieces Jeanne Glessner and her husband Bill, Banner, Wyoming, Roxanne Neilan and her husband Nathan, Newell, S.D., and six other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an older brother, Paul; and a younger brother, Kenneth.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City. Interment will be at the Pine Lawn Memorial Park cemetery.

Glenn W. Sorenson

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. — Glenn W. Sorenson, 73, Newcastle and formerly of Lead, S.D., passed away Oct. 11, 2001, at the Fort Meade Veterans Hospital in Sturgis, S.D.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Country Church at Four Corners, Wyo., with Pastors Charles Dutcher and Bill Haley officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Alberta; son Lenny (Berger) and Kayce Sorenson of Ten Sleep, Wyo.; daughter Sandy and David Fisher of Newcastle, Wyo.; granddaughter Sarah and Joel Chase of Spearfish, S.D.; grandson Rick and Kizzy Fisher of Laramie, Wyo.; three brothers, Arthur Sorenson of Madison, S.D., Melvin and Betty Sorenson of Bellevista, Arkansas, and Kenn and Gerri Sorenson of Rapid City, S.D.; four sisters, Ruth and Justin Lauer of Fremont, Neb., Shirley and Dan Barker of Madison, S.D., Velma and Chuck Wagner of Alexandria, S.D., and Carolen and Bob Weeks of Cordova, Tenn; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Sorenson, in 1957.

A memorial has been established to the Fort Meade VA Hospice program at Sturgis, S.D.

Helen Katherine Gilles

LEAD - Mass of Christian Burial for Helen Katherine Gilles, 69, of Lead, S.D., will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead. The Rev. William Zandri will officiate. Helen died Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Northern Hills General Hospital in Deadwood. Christian Wake and Rosary Service will be 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead. A memorial has been established by the family.

Helen was born Oct. 17, 1932, in Rapid City, S.D., the daughter of John M. and Carrie (Pearson) Mattson. She was the only child of John and Carrie born in the United States, as her siblings were born in Sweden. She attended country schools in Lone Tree and Box Elder, S.D. She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1950 and began working in Industrial Relations for the Credit Bureau in Rapid City. She married Albert "Al" P. Gilles Jr. on June 5, 1952, in Rapid City. They moved to Gurnsey, Wyo., where they lived for four years. Helen and Al enjoyed traveling, and she supported Al in his various engineering endeavors. They lived in Rapid City, Shoshone, Wyo., Young, Ariz., Pollock, S.D., and Linton, N.D., before moving to Spearfish in 1962. They moved to Lead in 1970, where they have since resided.

Helen enjoyed crafting of all kinds, especially making angels, which she shared with her many friends. She also made decorations for the annual sweetheart dinner at her church. She will be remembered for her rosettes that she made by the thousands, selling them and giving the proceeds to St. Patrick's Church. Her biggest joy in life was in giving to others.

Helen was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Waime Auxiliary and the local Diabetic Support group.

She is survived by her husband, Albert "Al" Gilles Jr. of Lead; four nephews, Kenneth Mattson, Tallahassee, Fla., Robert "Bob" Mattson, San Diego, Calif., Jerry Mattson, Mesa, Ariz., and Raymond Mattson, Kingman, Ariz.; a special nephew, Bill Gilles of Rapid City; two sisters-in-law, Vivian Gilles and Iris Womack both of Rapid City; and a brother-in-law;, Tom Gilles of Caputa, S.D.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Elof and Pella Mattson, and her parents.

The Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead has been entrusted with arrangements.

Maurice R. 'Tubby' Messerli

RAPID CITY - Maurice R. "Tubby" Messerli, 92, Rapid City, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Survivors include one son, James R. Messerli, Cascade, Idaho; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with the Rev. Dwayne Snell officiating. Military honors will be provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:15 p.m. from Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Clayton Ball

HOT SPRINGS - Clayton Ball, 87, lifelong rancher in the Ardmore, S.D., area, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Clayton Ball was born Dec. 6, 1913, near Edgemont, S.D., to McClellan and Ann Florence (Bowman) Ball. He received an elementary education in a rural school near Ardmore in the Plumb Creek area. Afterwards, he helped support his family by working in the Nebraska panhandle doing farm and ranch work for a couple of years. He then returned to Fall River County to farm and ranch. In March of 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In September of 1945, he was honorably discharged, whereupon he returned to the Edgemont/Ardmore areas, where he resumed his lifelong love of farm and ranch work.

He is survived by one brother, James Ball, Forest Grove, Ore.; several nieces and nephews, including Gary (Sharon) Romey, Hot Springs, Linda (Dennis) Anderson, Deadwood, S.D., Peggy (Tom) Wilcox, Mary Lou (Bob) Caster, David (Norma) Kintz, John (Lucy) Kintz, Perry (Margie) Kintz, Dee (Grace) Kintz,

Duane (Ann) Kintz, and Larry (Linda) Kintz, all residing in Oregon, Clifford (Jan) Ball, of California, and Catherine Ball-Hamilton of Kansas.

He was preceded in death by sisters Edna Kintz and Florence Romey, and brothers Roy Ball and Frank Ball.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs. Services will follow visitation at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel. Burial with full military rites will follow at Edgemont Community cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Hot Springs VFW.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley's Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs.

Harold Lloyd 'Bud' Bennett

LEAD - Harold Lloyd "Bud" Bennett, 78, formerly of Lead, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include one daughter, Janet Lancaster, Sioux Falls; one son, Bruce Bennett, Lead; two sisters, Naoma Carl and Mary Glover, both of Spearfish; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Christian wake and rosary service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead. Mass of Christian Burial for will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. William Zandri officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Laverne R. Clark

SPEARFISH - Laverne R. Clark, 78, Spearfish, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Clark, Spearfish; one daughter, Vicki Rafael, Seattle; and one sister, Mildred Earley.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

Beulah Mae Jacobsen

PIERRE - Beulah Mae Jacobsen, 86, Pierre, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare in Pierre

Arrangements are pending with Isburg-Hofmeister Chapels in Pierre.

JoAnn Trask

RAPID CITY — JoAnn Trask, 61, Rapid City, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

She was born July 3, 1940, in Belle Fourche to Bud and Betty (Eccles) Rozell. She earned a bachelor's degree in music from the University of Colorado. JoAnn married Gregg H. Trask on July 23, 1969, in Rapid City.

She worked as a librarian at the Rapid City Public Library for more than 25 years before retiring last year. JoAnn served for many years at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church as organist, lay reader, lay Eucharistic minister, confirmation instructor and Sunday school teacher.

She is survived by her husband, Gregg H. Trask of Rapid City; two sons, Robert C. Trask and wife, Amy, of Venice, Calif., and John D. Trask of Rapid City; one brother, John Rozell and wife, Kay, of Sioux Falls; brother-in-law David S. Trask of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and sister-in-law Sara Marvin of Springfield, Ore.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Rapid City, with Father Paul Sneve officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.

Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of the arrangements.
