Doris E. Crandell, 91
Jan. 16, 1918 - Feb. 4, 2009

Doris E. Crandell, 91, of Pierre, died at her home Feb. 4, 2009.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, at First Baptist Church in Pierre. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7 at the First Baptist Church, Pierre. Interment will follow at Riverside cemetery.

Doris E. Parsons was born Jan. 16, 1918, to George and Ethel (Griffith) Parsons in Cozad, Neb. She was their fifth of 10 children. Doris received her education in Cozad and at Ravenswood, W.Va. Her family moved from Nebraska to West Virginia when Doris was young and returned when she was a very young woman.

Doris worked as a housemaid in Gothenburg and later as a waitress in North Platte, where she met Benjamin Franklin Crandell. They were married on July 4, 1938. They moved to Kearney, where Ben worked as a night clerk and Doris as a waitress at the Midway Hotel. They lived at the same hotel and, as a young married couple, made lifelong friends. They lived there until after their first son, Larry, was born in January 1941. Keith was born in March 1945.

Because Ben slept days, Doris entertained her boys with games. Playing cards was great fun for all the Parsons get-togethers, which were many and often. Fishing was the other family entertainment. Doris fished, too, except for baiting the hook, and she was known for hollering every time she caught a fish. She was proud to be a homemaker and was the best of the best.

Ben later worked as an REA Express Agent and was transferred to Pierre in 1957. They joined the First Baptist Church, beginning another chapter in their lives. Over the years, Doris was active in Elizabeth Circle, and the church kitchen was where she enjoyed working the most. Doris served lunch at Buchanan School for over 18 years. Ben was transferred from Pierre to Hastings, Neb., in 1963; but they returned to Pierre to stay in 1971. Ben passed away in 1980, and Larry in 1991.

In 1993, Doris moved to Lincoln Apartments, one of 24 new tenants in that new living center. When Mills Property Management celebrated Pierre Lincoln Apartments’15th anniversary in 2008, Doris was the last of the first tenants to still live there.

Survivors, grateful for having been Doris’ family, are her son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Donna Crandell, and Larry’s wife, Myrtle Crandell; grandchildren Barbara Miller, Eileen Lindblom and her husband, Ryan, and Brenda Carroll and her husband, Terry; great-grandchildren Jacob Miller and his wife, Chandra, and Rebekah Miller. She is survived by two sisters, Ellen Major and Virginia Vogt, sister-in-law Evelyn Parsons; and many nieces and nephews. Doris is survived, too, by Sherrie Murphy, whom she had known and loved since Sherrie’s birth, along with her parents, Mel and Elayne Cunningham.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and love of her life, Ben; her son, Larry; four brothers, Alvin, Charlie, Donald, and Robert; and three sisters, Goldie Buck, Margaret Howat, and Dorothy Hennige and their spouses, as well as brothers-in-law Jim Major and Johnny Vogt. She was the last surviving spouse in Ben’s family of three brothers and two sisters.
