Wilma Rhynard

STURGIS — Wilma Rhynard, 89, of Sturgis, died at her residence on Friday, January 18, 2002.

Wilma Marian Miner was born at Dalzell, S.D., to homesteaders Asa and Ethel (Peabody) Miner on May 22, 1912. She attended the Fenner School in that area and for two years, a school held in the old bunkhouse at the Ward Ranch on the Belle Fourche River. Her formal education ended with the eighth grade.

As a young woman, she worked as a "hired girl" for several families, including the Mortensons who ran the Creighton Store at the time, the Franklin King family in Sturgis and for the Carls in Rapid City.

She married John C. Rhynard at Deadwood, S.D., on June 23, 1937, and the couple honeymooned driving to Los Angeles, Calif., where John had employment as a hod carrier. Once again, Wilma found housekeeping work. By 1941, the couple had saved enough money to return to South Dakota with their two oldest children and begin farming on a rental farm at Dalzell.

In 1947, they purchased a small farm at Creighton and moved their family there. Wilma was a hard worker who milked cows, raised poultry and always had a garden, while raising her family and filling the traditional woman's role. When her younger children were in high school, Wilma cooked at the Quinn Dormitory and later at the New Underwood Hospital.

Her husband died in 1968, and in 1969, Wilma moved to Sturgis where she cared for her two brothers and her mother, Ethel Miner, who lived to be 105 years of age.

Wilma was a quiet woman who found happiness in helping others. She had the gift of listening with her heart and was able to offer much comfort and solace to many people over the years. The children at the Woodland Trailer Court, where she lived for 32 years, knew her as the Candy Lady. She had the knack of always having a meal ready for her family and friends who dropped by. Her trailer house in Sturgis was the scene of many happy gatherings of her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved animals and could be counted on to feed the stray cats and dogs in the trailer court. She was never without a pet cat until the last two years of her life.

Two sons, John Duane Rhynard and his wife, Rene, of Mud Butte, S.D., and Zane Rhynard and his wife, Norma, of Newcastle, Wyo., survive Wilma. She is also survived by four daughters, Patricia Buck and her husband, Gene, of Casper, Wyo., Marcia Gorton of Inglewood, Calif., Judy Stafford of Ocala, Fla., and Anita Milne of Houston, Texas. Other survivors include 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two very special friends, Linda Erion and Carol Crance. Her family also remembers three neighbors, Alice Schroeder and Paul and Sheryl Frey, who were extremely helpful during Wilma's later years, with gratitude.

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; two brothers, Everett and Elvis Miner; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Rhynard; a son-in-law, Mike Gorton; and one great-grandson, Rocko Simone.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, January 21, 2002, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Charley Conger officiating. Burial will be at the Elm Springs cemetery at 3 p.m.

Visitation will be at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel today from noon until 9 p.m., and on Monday prior to the services.

Memorials may be made to the Banner Hospice in Spearfish and to the Elm Springs Community Church.
