Shirley Lou (Rumsey) Hatch

EDGEMONT - Shirley Lou (Rumsey) Hatch of Edgemont died Saturday, December 8, 2001, in Rapid City Regional Hospital after an extended illness.

She was born in Newport, Nebraska, in 1940 and spent her first eight years living in Bassett, Nebraska, on a family farm. She and her family moved to Hot Springs, S.D., in 1948, where Shirley graduated from high school with the class of 1957. Shirley married Bennie Hatch in 1964 and together they raised a family of five children. Shirley was a Postmaster for 19 years, starting in Smithwick, S.D., then Buffalo Gap, S.D., and finally in Edgemont, S.D. She retired in 1994.

Shirley was a member of the Minnekahta Quilter's Guild, the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States. Shirley loved people, a good book and a good story. She played bridge most every week at the Senior Citizen's Center in Edgemont.

Shirley was an avid collector of the family's genealogy, both hers and Bennie's. She had boxes and boxes of old photographs, letters and mementos. If there was a story behind something or someone, Shirley was sure to know.

Shirley had a close family network of children, brothers, and sisters, aunts and uncles and cousins near and far. There were plenty of family gatherings throughout the years. Shirley loved to sit and listen to others' stories and share a few of her own. She came from a long line of storytellers who sometimes embellished to round out the tale.

Shirley enjoyed traveling, though in the last few years only a few trips were made. She and Bennie often traveled in a vintage vehicle from their large collection of automobiles. The annual Rod Run in the Black Hills was one of their favorites.

Shirley liked a good football game, especially if the Denver Broncos were playing. You knew to never interrupt her during a game. She generously supported high school sports when her children were in school and often traveled to the away games.

Shirley was the center of our family. You could generally catch up on everyone else after one conversation with her. She was our source of good advice. If you were contemplating a problem, she was sure to have a reasonable solution or suggestion. If you were discouraged, she'd tell you a funny story and cheer you up.

Shirley had a good heart. There was never anyone going hungry if she knew about it. Hence, at mealtimes, there was often an extra face or two. She was accepting of anyone regardless of race or socioeconomic status. More than once she opened her home to a wayward traveler. Friends of her children often sought refuge in her home.

Shirley was an avid collector of antiques. Many of the pieces in her home she had personally discovered and refinished. Some of them she had had for years, others were recent purchases. A few of the antiques had been in Shirley or Bennie's family for years.

In her retirement, Shirley took up quilting. Her favorite project was a quilt over 60 years old that had been worked on by three generations, including her mother, Evelyn, and daughter Amanda.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Bennie, of Edgemont, S.D.; two sons, W.T. and Joyce Hatch of Caputa, S.D., and A.J. and Natalie of Rapid City, S.D.; three daughters, Lisa and Robert of Portland, Ore., Adriana and Adam of Glenpool, Okla., and Amanda of Spearfish, S.D.; seven grandchildren, Jay, John, Daniel, Maria, Gabriel, Chemenne, and Sara; two brothers, Bob Rumsey and wife Marion, Old Town, Idaho, and Bud Rumsey, Kennewick, Wash.; and two sisters, Doris Nielsen and husband Herb, Dayton, Wyo., and Beverly Muhm and husband Skip, Ames, Neb. Additional extended family are Tom and Dee Petrizzo and children of Sturgis, S.D., and Steve and Myra Alexander of Rapid City, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Jackson Rumsey and Evelyn Adeline (Orr) Rumsey.

A memorial has been established in her name to the Minnekahta Quilter's Guild in lieu of flowers.
