Nora Jean 'Jeanie' Struensee
PHILIP - Nora Jean "Jeanie" Struensee, 53, Philip, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at her home.
Survivors include one son, Christopher Hummell, Green Bay, Wis.; one daughter, Angela Schroeder, Appleton, Wis.; four grandchildren; three stepsons, Dave Struensee, Daniel Struensee and Darwin Struensee; two brothers, Herb Eutsler, Cotter, Iowa, and Doug Eutsler, Wapello, Iowa; and one half brother, Tom Lawton, Salem, Iowa.
Her husband, Greg Struensee, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Rush Funeral Home in Philip.
Private family graveside services will be at 2 p.m. CST Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Chapelle cemetery in Pierre.

Wayne Carlson
BELLE FOURCHE - Wayne Carlson, 64, Belle Fourche, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at home.
Survivors include his wife, Vera Carlson, Belle Fourche; one son, Bob Carlson, Fargo, N.D.; two grandchildren; one half brother, Gary Carlson, Texas; one sister, Faye Collions, Newell; and two half sisters, Cheryl Cunningham, Loveland, Colo., and Donna Mathern, Spearfish.
Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche. A rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Belle Fourche.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the church, with the Rev. Arnold Kari officiating.
Burial will follow at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.
Helen Hedwig Busch Sande
RAPID CITY - Helen Hedwig Busch Sande, 92, Rapid City and formerly of Huron, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare Center in Rapid City.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald Sande, Huron, and Kermit Sande, Reston, Va.; one daughter, Mary Christensen, Rapid City; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Andrew H. Sande, preceded her in death.
Visitation with family present will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at American Lutheran Church in Huron, with the Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating.
Burial will be at Riverside cemetery.
Memorials may be made to American Lutheran Church, Huron, or South Canyon Lutheran Church, Rapid City.
Roy M. Lathem
PIERRE - Longtime Stanley County rancher Roy M. Lathem, 80, passed away December 8, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Services will be held Thursday, December 13, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Pierre with the Rev. Theodora Bollin officiating. Burial with full military honors will take place at the National cemetery in Sturgis.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Home Wednesday, Dec. 12.
Roy M. Lathem was born November 2, 1921, in Floyd County, Texas, to Marion and Clara (Sluder) Lathem, the oldest of four children. He graduated from Floydada High School in 1940. He worked at the W.M. Massy Ranch in Floydada, Texas, until Pearl Harbor, following which he joined the United States Air Force. Roy spent almost four years stationed in England, France, Belgium and Germany, serving as an airplane electrical mechanic.
During his European tour of duty Roy played as an offensive and defensive guard on the Air Force football team, and had the privilege of playing on the European Operations Theatre Championship team when Air Force upset General Eisenhower's Army Headquarters team.
Roy returned to the United States in November 1945, working for several years in ranching, logging and trucking. Roy married
Loreta (Reta) Stringer on July 20, 1947, in Sandhill, Texas. Following their wedding Roy returned to ranching, working for G.L. Taylor Cattle Co. at Stratford, Texas, and later, LaVeta, Colorado. While in Colorado he received an associate's degree in agriculture from Trinidad Junior College.
In 1952, the Lathems returned to Olton, Texas, where Roy worked with the Olton Butane Co. until 1956, when he was asked to move to Stanley County, South Dakota, to work at the Billy Barrick Cattle ranches. Roy subsequently became the manager of three of the Barrick ranches until their sale in 1984. In 1978, Roy was recognized by the state of South Dakota for his work in soil conservation.
Upon their retirement they moved to Fort Pierre, where Roy became more active in activities of the First Baptist Church, YMCA, Gideons, and developed an extensive reputation for his skills in baking bread.
Grateful for having shared his zest for life include his wife, Reta; a daughter and son-in-law, Penny and John Porter of Yankton; three grandchildren, Valerie (Porter) and Russ Hanson of Pierre, Jerime and Cynthia of Rapid City and Zachary of Yankton; and one great-granddaughter, Kylee Quinn Hanson, with whom he loved to share Coke and ice cream; a brother, W.G. Lathem of Bee Branch, Arkansas; a brother-in-law, Bruce Baumann of Perryton, Texas; a sister-in-law, Sylba Williams of Flint, Texas; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ray Lathem; and a sister, Nell Baumann.
Memorials may be given in memory of Roy M. Lathem to First Baptist Church, 2310 East Capitol, Box 105; YMCA, 900 E. Church; or Gideons International, P.O. Box 251, Pierre, SD 57501.
Raymond R. 'Ray' Quinn
RAPID CITY - Raymond R. "Ray" Quinn, 76, of Rapid City, died on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at a local nursing home.
Ray was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Ralph and Harriet (Angerhofer) Quinn. He attended Aberdeen schools and moved to Rapid City in 1947 after a tour in the Merchant Marines during WWII. He married
Annie Heupel on June 5, 1949 at Leola. He was a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City. He worked part time at Robbinsdale Bowling Alley in Rapid City for many years and enjoyed bowling. He also served as a coach and manager with little league baseball for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and treasured his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Quinn of Rapid City; two sons, Rodney Quinn and his wife, Diane, and their children, Rachel and Danny, of Fort Collins, Colo.; Malcolm Quinn and his wife, Lynn and their children, Joe and Cameron of Gillette, Wyo.; one daughter, Carol Huether and her husband, Kevin, and their children, Matt, Myles and Kayla of Rapid City; one sister, Bonnie Gardner of Aberdeen; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and then at the church on Wednesday for one hour before services.
Services are set for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Duane Duley and Vicar Thomas Beaverson officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established.
Melvin R. Morris
CUSTER - Melvin R. Morris, 65, Custer, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Custer Community Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Morris, Custer; two sons, Michel Morris, Ester, Alaska, and Richard Morris, Box Elder; one daughter, Myrna Saber, Coos Bay, Ore.; two brothers, David Morris, Custer, and Ralph Morris, Boise, Idaho; one sister, Judy Pond, Custer; and one grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Berean Bible Church in Custer, with the Rev. Larry Weidell officiating.
A memorial has been established.

Reinie Christian Graff
RAPID CITY - Reinie Christian Graff, 76, of Rapid City, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
He was born in Eureka, South Dakota, on Oct. 6, 1925, to John and Margaret (Pfeifle) Graff. He was married
May 7, 1950, to Darlene Rohrbach. The couple lived in Rapid City.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Darlene Graff of Rapid City; three sons, Roy Graff and his wife, Kathy, and Randy Graff, all of Rapid City, and Roger Graff of Las Vegas; three daughters, Elda Graff West and her husband, Douglas, of Las Vegas, Dabra Graff Colo'n and her husband, Carlos Sr., and Rhonda Graff, all of Rapid City; eight grandchildren; three great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; four brothers, Harvey Graff of Rapid City, and Marvin, Allen and Jimmy Graff, all of Ashley, N.D.; and one sister, Pearl Graff Rott of Kulm, N.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, one brother, and one daughter in infancy.
Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and then at the church on Monday for one hour before services.
Services are set for 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 835 E. Fairmont Blvd., in Rapid City, with the Rev. Douglas Free officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.
Avis Baumberger
DESMET - Avis Baumberger, 76, DeSmet, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Good Samaritan Center in DeSmet.
Survivors include four sons, Dennis Baumberger, Zumbrota, Minn., Gary Baumberger, Sturgis, Craig Baumberger, Sioux Falls, and Kevin Baumberger, Gettysburg; one daughter, Joan Unger, Wichita, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Virgil Baumberger, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Osthus Funeral Home in DeSmet.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at United Church of Christ in DeSmet, with the Rev. Gail Arnold officiating.
Burial will be at DeSmet cemetery.
Alma Jean Doan
RAPID CITY - Alma Jean Doan, 89, Rapid City, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Westhills Village in Rapid City.
Survivors include two nieces, Sara Masilko, Grand Forks, N.D., and Sandra Morris, Denver.
Private committal services will be held at a later date in Joplin, Mo.
Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Service of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.
Gerty V. Hilzinger
RAPID CITY - Gerty V. Hilzinger, 79, Rapid City, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include two sons, Reinhardt Hilzinger, Sacramento, Calif., and Frank Hilzinger, Rapid City; one brother and one sister in Germany; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City, with the Rev. Michel Mulloy officiating.
Inurnment will be at a later date in Red Lodge, Mont.
Zachary Scott Ness
ELLSWORTH AFB - Zachary Scott Ness, 4, of Ellsworth AFB, died Wed., Dec. 5, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital after a courageous fight with cancer.
Zachary was born August 15, 1997, at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, to Scott and Amy (Schmidt) Ness. He lived his entire life at Ellsworth AFB. He loved to play Super Heroes, such as Batman, Spiderman and Luke Skywalker, to name a few. He enjoyed his Play Station. He loved playing outdoors, snowmobiling, driving Grandpa's tractor, and picking flowers. He made everybody he met smile.
He is survived by his parents, Scott and Amy Ness of Ellsworth AFB; his grandparents, Jim Schmidt of Crystal, Minn., Rick and Leona Winters of Bemidji, Minn., Milo Passeri and Linda Ness of Bemidji, Minn., and Roger and Jan Ness of Thief River Falls, Minn.; his great-grandparents, Melvin and Alice Malbraaten of Bemidji, Minn., and Delores Ness of Chandler, Ariz.; and his aunts and uncles, Sky Knute, Roger and Angela Ness, all of Bemidji, Minn., and Curt Ness and Brian Ness, both of Thief River Falls, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his great grandparents, Wendell and Addie Gregg of Bemidji, Minn., Charlie Ness of Chandler, Ariz., and Merle Malbraaten and Edna Schmidt, both of Bemidji.
Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and then at the church on Saturday for one hour before services.
Services are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with Vicar Thomas Beaverson officiating. A second service and burial will take place in Bemidji, Minnesota, at a later date.
Christian Walker
WINNER - Christian Walker, 87, Winner, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Winner Regional Nursing Home.
Survivors include one daughter, Elaine O'Shaughnessy, Salt Lake City; two stepdaughters, LoAnne Haley, Winner, and Gaye Larson, Wheaton, Minn.; one stepson, Ronald Olmsted, Miami; two sisters, Edna Bicek, Winner, and Amanda Janas, North Platte, Neb.; one brother, John Walker, Pierre; three grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many stepgreat-grandchildren.
His wives, Ruth and Leona, preceded him in death.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, followed by an 8 p.m. prayer service, at Mason Funeral Home in Winner.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Christ Lutheran Church in Winner.
Burial will be at Winner cemetery.
