Roger Erickson, 66

Roger “Mick” Erickson, 66, Sturgis, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Gussie Erickson, Sturgis; his children, Lora, Erickson, Sioux Falls, Michael Erickson, Pierre, Diane Solaas and Daniel Solaas, both of Sturgis; two brothers, Jim Erickson, Rapid City, and Lynn Erickson, Pierre; and two granddaughters.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Josephine Flossie Herbert

BELLE FOURCHE — Josephine Flossie Herbert died September 23, 2001, after a five-year bout with lung cancer.

Born March 18, 1918, she was preceded in death by her first two husbands, George Noyce and Lauren Davis, and an infant daughter, Nelly Noyce. She is survived by her husband, Alan Herbert, and two children, Leona Wyatt of Chadron, Nebraska, and Larry Noyce of Tucson, Arizona. Also surviving are stepdaughters Dallerie Davis of Pleasant Valley and Kayla Clark of Missoula, Montana, and stepson Lauren Steve Davis of Arlington, Virginia. There are 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren as well.

Josie was a noted artist in several media for more than 70 years. She did custom leatherwork for many years and began painting in the 1930s, using household enamels on pieces of linoleum. Her later canvases sold widely both in the Tri-State area and in Arizona, where she spent her winters.

She was a charter member of the Black Hills Art Association and affiliated with several art groups in Arizona. She was honored with a two-artist show with nationally known sculptor Edward E. Hlavka at the High Plains Heritage Center Museum in Spearfish, and she was an active participant in the Quick Draw shows and sales there for a number of years. Her paintings were also exhibited in Las Vegas, Tucson, Mesa and Scottsdale, Arizona, and Sioux City, Iowa. She was a charter exhibitor at the Western Arts Roundup held during the Black Hills Roundup in Belle Fourche.

Josie worked for a number of years at the Belle Fourche Livestock Exchange and held the distinction of being the first female weigh-master in the United States.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at the Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Paul Howard officiating. Burial will be in Pine Slope cemetery. A memorial to the Christian Life Center has been established in lieu of flowers.

Arrangements are under the direction of Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.

Jerry Pettis

KENT, Wash. — Jerry Pettis, 56, Kent and formerly of Faith, S.D., died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001.

Survivors include two sons, Justin Pettis and Dustin Pettis, both of Kent; one daughter, Jerry Ann Pettis, Kent; two grandchildren; his mother and stepfather, Neva and Orvie Bowli, South Dakota; two brothers, Darryl, South Dakota, and Gary, Tucson, Ariz.; and two sisters, Renee and Dala, both of Texas.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Faith Baptist Church in Kent.

A gathering will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Meridian Grange Hall in Kent.

Merrilee A. Trucano

RAPID CITY — Merrilee A. Trucano, 65, Rapid City, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, A.P. "Pat" Trucano, Rapid City; one son, Delyle Fall, Rapid City; three daughters, Betty Butler, Rapid City, Starla Lindblom, Hermosa, and Amber Timmerman, Bismarck, N.D.; one brother, Harley Emick, Oral; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Buffalo Gap cemetery.

Connie N. Mulford Case

POWELL, Wyo. — Connie N. (Mulford) Case, age 72, passed away at the Powell Hospital, Powell, Wyoming. She was born on March 4, 1929, to Charlie and Mollie (Conerly) Mulford in Laurel, Mississippi. On January 14, 1950, she and Clifford L. Case were married in Pascagoula, Mississippi. For 37 years, they resided in Rapid City, S.D., serving the Southern Baptist Churches. For the past eight years, they have resided in Powell, Wyoming, to be near their son and daughter-in-law. Connie enjoyed reading and playing gospel music on the organ and piano. She is survived by her husband Clifford of the family home in Powell; son and daughter-in-law Kenneth Ray and Myrna Case of Powell; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Millie Mulford.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home, Powell, Wyoming. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home, with Rev. Clyde Thompson officiating. Pallbearers will be Dan Shumway, Ron Elwood, David Jamison, Jim Smith, Vern Groskop, Chris Hoellwarth and Bill Breaham. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Buchanan, R.H. Rock, Warren Reub, Ken Case and Bob Webber. Burial will follow in Crown Hill cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials might be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Virginia L. Mathern

SPEARFISH — Virginia L. Mathern, 74, Spearfish, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Zweigle, Minneapolis, and Janet Mathern, Spearfish; one son, Spencer Stearns, Heckla; two sisters, Marjorie Bonzer, Lakewood, Colo., and Bonnie Herseth, Phoenix; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

Sadie Marie Hoar

RAPID CITY — Sadie Marie Hoar, 96, of Rapid City, died Friday, September 21, 2001, at WestHills Village.

She was born November 4, 1904, in a farm home near Brewster, Minnesota, to Frank and Annie Stearns. At the age of 6, she moved to a homestead near Provo, S.D., with her four brothers and parents. She completed grade school at a country school, getting there by horseback, wagon, sleigh, or walking. She attended high school at Provo and Edgemont and graduated with the class of 1924. She advanced her education by receiving a Teacher's Certificate in elementary education from Spearfish Normal. Her teaching career involved teaching the first year at a country school between Cascade and Rumford, S.D., for $75 per month. The following few years, she taught school in Provo, S.D., in the schoolhouse that her father helped build, and the salary was $110 per month. Her three oldest children also attended the same school for their first few years of education, and the schoolhouse still stands today.

On June 1, 1929, she married John D. Hoar in Custer. She was actively involved in all cattle ranching operations for 43 years until 1972, when they retired in Hot Springs.

Even though Sadie's schedule on the ranch was busy from before daylight to after dark, she still found time for Ladies Aid, Ladies Extension Clubs, many years on various school boards, several years as a 4-H leader and 4-H mom, Sunday School teacher, organist and superintendent.

She was known for her inner strength and her positive and accepting attitude. She took great and caring pleasure in her family, friends and church. She has been a member of the United Church in Edgemont for 80 years.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters, Robert and wife Charlotte of Temecula, Calif., Anice Reiman and husband Leonard of Altoona, Wis., Darrell and wife Jo of Black Hawk, Donald and wife Doris of Poynette, Wis., and Patty Brunner and husband Don of Rapid City; one brother, Charlie Stearns and wife Beverly of Hot Springs; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, on March 11, 1982; and her brothers, Ted, Art and Ed Stearns.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 26, at United Church in Edgemont, with Pastor Elizabeth Jassmann officiating. Burial will follow in the Edgemont cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the United Church of Edgemont.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel, Edgemont, S.D.

Milo 'Keno' Jerome Black Crow Jr.

WANBLEE — Milo Jerome Black Crow Jr., 40, died September 22, 2001, at his home. He was born January 5, 1961, in Riverton, Wyoming, to Milo Black Crow and Esther Addison Black Crow, and was raised on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, and Wanblee and Rapid City in South Dakota. Milo was an accomplished artist and painter with a gentle, caring and loving spirit.

Survivors include his daughter, Debra Black Crow-Stauty, Ellsworth Air Force Base; six sisters, Celia Farley, Carmen Gray, Susan Spotted Bear and Alicia Bassett, all of Rapid City, and Angela Richards and Connie Lawrence of Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers, David Black Crow, Rapid City, and Allen Black Crow, Salt Lake City, Utah; one half-sister, Morgan Black Crow, and four half-brothers, Jessie Keta and Joseph, Justin and Jared Black Crow, all of Mission, S.D.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Also happy to have shared in his life is Salome Broderson, Rapid City, his fiancιe and special friend for eight years. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Gary, Aaron and Austin Black Crow; and one sister, Debra Black Crow.

Services will be held at the Wanblee CAP office, with wake services on Wednesday and Thursday nights, and the funeral service at 10 a.m. Friday, September 28, 2001, with Rev. Daniel Makes Good officiating. Burial will follow at the Gethsemane Episcopal cemetery, Wanblee, under the direction of Sioux Funeral Home, Pine Ridge, S.D.

Beulah Ann Burgess

YANKTON — Beulah Ann Burgess, 71, Yankton and formerly of Millboro and Martin, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Burgess, Yankton; one daughter, Deborah Valentine, Yankton; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Janelle Follette, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Janice Selby, Faith; and four brothers, Derl Jensen and Lloyd Jensen, Lantry, Roger Jensen, Sturgis, and Marvin Jensen, Faith.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with an 8:30 p.m. Scripture service, and for one hour before services Thursday, Sept. 27, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Yankton.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. David Gunderson officiating.

Burial will be at Garden of Memories in Yankton.

Michael L. 'Mick' Larson

RAPID CITY — Michael L. "Mick" Larson, 56, Rapid City, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2001, at his home.

Survivors include three sons, Scott Larson, Mitchell, Shawn Larson, Rapid City, and Trevor Larson, Norfolk, Neb.; one daughter, Lori Larson, Rapid City; his parents, Thomas and Vina Larson, Rapid City; two brothers, Gary Larson, Rapid City, and Doug Larson, Towanda, Penn.; two sisters, Maureen Bay, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Luanne Rummell, Lead; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at South Canyon Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating.

Inurnment will be at Mountain View cemetery in Rapid City.

Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Marie G. McKiernan

RAPID CITY — Marie G. McKiernan, 80, Rapid City, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include one son, Brian McKiernan, Rapid City, and three grandsons.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at South Canyon Baptist Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Dick Nickel officiating.

Burial will be at Mountain View cemetery in Rapid City.

Margaret Catherine Morgan

KREMMLING, Colo. — Margaret Catherine Morgan, 76, Kremmling, Colo., died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, in Austin, Texas.

Survivors include one sister, W. Jean Anthony, Lovington, N.M.; seven children, Jesse Collins, Marblehead, Mass., Michael Collins, Rapid City, P.J. Crouch, Kremmling, Roy Collins, Corbin, Va., Marilyn Swanson, Austin, Barbara Pierce, Hooker, Okla., and Donna Hartman, Manalapan, N.J.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services are private.

All Faiths Funeral Service of Austin is in charge of arrangements.

Norman 'Tony' Stuen

SPEARFISH — Norman "Tony" Stuen, 78, Spearfish and formerly of Deadwood, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Fort Meade Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Stuen, Spearfish; two sons, Wayne Stuen, Spearfish, and Norman Stuen, Deadwood; two daughters, Ardel Gienger, Littleton, Colo., and Judy Myers, Belle Fourche; four brothers, Chester Stuen, Sturgis, Donald Stuen, Yankton, Glenn Stuen, Forrest Lake, Minn., and Larry Stuen, Simi Valley, Calif.; four sisters, Annabelle Schindel, Yankton, Ruth White, Joplin, Mo., Eunice Bride, Arcadia, Calif., and Alice Chrsitenson, Mesa, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Sturgis.

Charles L. 'Chuck' Tollinger

LITTLETON, Colo. — Charles "Chuck" Tollinger, 91, died Friday, September 21, 2001, at the Christian Living Campus, Johnson Center Nursing Home in Littleton, Colorado.

The son of Charles J. and Mary Huxtable Tollinger, he was born June 23, 1910, in New Underwood, South Dakota. After graduating from high school in South Dakota, he attended and graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. He married Maxine Miller on June 5, 1933, and they were married for 61 years, until her death in 1994. They had one son, Thomas. During World War II, Mr. Tollinger was a civilian employee at Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City. After the war, Mr. Tollinger joined the faculty of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, and was there until his retirement in 1979.

Mr. Tollinger had many interests such as golf, hunting and fishing. He was a lifetime member of the Rapid City Elks Lodge. He was also active for many years in the Isaac Walton League.

Surviving are his son, Thomas W. Tollinger and wife Joyce of Littleton, Colo.; twin granddaughters, Adele Tollinger Harbrick and Allyson Tollinger Gehring; and twin grandsons, Alan Thomas Tollinger and Andrew Charles Tollinger.

Mr. Tollinger was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Tollinger.

Friends will be received from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Behrens Mortuary. Graveside services for Mr. Tollinger will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Mountain View cemetery, with Reverend Ted Huffman officiating.

Jacqualyn Rook-Thibodeau

RAPID CITY — Jacqualyn Rook-Thibodeau, 68, Rapid City and formerly of Madison, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Meadowbrook Manor Nursing Home in Rapid City.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene Thibodeau, Rapid City; two daughters, Susan Beyer, Rapid City, and Debra Holloway, Lake Stevens, Wash.; two sons, Steven Davenport, Sioux Falls, and Daniel Davenport, Lake Stevens; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Denis Rook, Madison, and Dean Rook, Alberta, Canada; and three sisters, Phyllis Kern, Sioux Falls, Mary Rook, Brookings, and Cheryl Gould, California.

A parish Scripture service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Weiland Funeral Chapel in Madison.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Madison.

Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery in Wentworth.
