PIERRE — Elmer "Bud" Ruttman, 76, Pierre, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Maryhouse Sub-acute Center in Pierre.

Arrangements are pending with Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel of Pierre.

Willard 'Sam' Sammeli

RAPID CITY — Willard "Sam" Sammeli, 70, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Sammeli, Rapid City; six children, Kevin Sammeli, Kathy Sammeli, Kelly Sammeli and Mike Berry, all of Rapid City, Kirby Sammeli, Salt Lake City, and Connie Eaton, Chadron, Neb.; and 10 grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Verna Jean Huckins

STURGIS — Verna Jean Huckins, 78, Sturgis, died Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at the Sturgis Long Term Care Center.

Visitation will be Thursday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and for one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.

Funeral services will be Friday, September 7, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church, with Pastor Bob Yantis officiating. Burial will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Hulett cemetery.

Verna was born December 14, 1922, at Keystone, S.D., to James and Esther (Serby) Proffitt. She grew up in the Vale area. She married Percy Huckins at Broadus, Mont., on October 3, 1942. They lived in the Sundance and Hulett area and ranched on Sunny Divide. Her husband died in July of 1969, and in August of 1969, Verna moved to Sturgis, where she has made her home since. She worked as a nurse's aide for many years.

Verna was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Sturgis. She also did volunteer work at the Sturgis Community Health Care Center.

Survivors include her children, Karen Popham, Belle Fourche, S.D., Don Huckins and his wife, Carol, Laramie, Wyo., Wes Huckins and his wife, Carolyn, Laramie, Wyo., Hazel Whaley, Lincoln, Neb., J.C. Huckins and his wife, Josie, Sturgis, Leon Huckins and his wife, Jackie, Sturgis, Martin Huckins and his wife, Mary Jo, Gillette, Wyo., and Lester Huckins and his wife, Carol, Sturgis. Survivors also include one brother, Albert Stockton, Las Vegas, Nev.; three sisters, Bessie Stockton Marenda, Sturgis, Florence Bradford, Otis, Ore., and Waunita Shaykett, Prineville, Ore.; 44 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who love her very much. We will all miss her.

Her parents; her husband; three children, Norma Jean Dexter, Gary R. Huckins and Nancy M. Daniels; four brothers, Norman Proffitt, Charles Stockton, Martin Stockton and Ernest Stockton; two sisters, Ruby Stockton Baker and Alvira Stockton Troxell; one granddaughter, Dolly Mae Huckins; and one great-grandson, Devon Scott Huckins, preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established to the Sturgis Community Long Term Care Center.

Harry Putnam
October 27, 1922 - September 15, 2014

RAPID CITY - Harry W. Putnam, 91, died Monday, September 15, 2014 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Ft. Meade, SD.

Harry was born to Fannie (Livermore) and Kimball Putnam October 27, 1922, forty miles west of Pierre near the Bad River. He graduated from Pierre High School in 1940. He lived at home until November 1942 when he joined the United States Navy. He was stationed at Pensacola, Florida, from the spring of 1943 until November 1944, when he was assigned to the U.S.S. Suwannee, a small aircraft carrier. He saw action in the Battle of Okinawa.

After discharge in January 1946, he moved to Rapid City and married Margaret Daughenbaugh June 28, 1947. He worked as a carpenter and fireman, which was his favorite job. Then, through the efforts of Margaret, he attended Black Hill State College, and eventually attained a Master’s degree in education. He taught English in Rapid City for twenty-one years until he retired at age 62. He was a life time member of VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota Educational Association.

Margaret and Harry loved to travel, saw most of the United States and made several trips to England and Scotland where Margaret had relatives. He was a student of history and enjoyed faraway places, especially places of historical interest. He was a longtime diarist, keeping a daily diary for seventy-three years.

During his retirement from teaching, he worked as a carpenter and handyman, building or repairing things for many people, and he loved to meet with and hear from former students. Harry felt life was good to him. He suffered few ailments and enjoyed many years of marriage with Margaret. He enjoyed his children and grandkids and his many friendships.

He leaves his wife, Margaret, of 67 years; daughter, Susan (Dean) Hade; a son, Kenneth (Linnea) Putnam, all of Rapid City; a sister, Hazel Madaris of Cambridge, MN; and grandchildren; Randall and Daniel Hade, and Lee and Layne Putnam.

Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.

Services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 20, at First Congregational Church UCC with Rev. Kathleen Batchelder officiating.

Interment will be at Black Hills National cemetery with full military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and U.S. Navy Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Rapid City Fire Department, the Rapid City Library, and the First Congregational Church.

Charles "Chuck" Mickel
December 28, 1938 - September 17, 2014

RAPID CITY - Charles J. “Chuck” Mickel, 75, passed away unexpectedly September 17, 2014 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Chuck was born on December 28, 1938 in Winner, SD to John and Carolina (Koellmann) Mickel. He went to school in White River, SD and graduated from White River High School in 1956. Chuck attended the University of South Dakota and graduated with a Master’s of Science in Geology. Following graduation, Chuck enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for six years, having an assignment in the Pentagon. After being honorably discharged in May of 1969, he applied to the University of South Dakota Law School where he graduated with his Juris Doctorate.

During his early years as a lawyer, Chuck worked as a law clerk for a Federal District Judge in Aberdeen, did campaigning for his cousin Senator James Abourezk, and served for a time as Deputy States Attorney for Pennington County. In the late 1970’s, Chuck started Mickel Law Practice, and owned it until he retired in 2004.

Chuck was very active in the Rapid City Community participating in many local organizations. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge in White River, member of Rapid City’s St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and a member of the South Dakota Bar Association. Chuck served a term in the South Dakota Legislature in the mid 1970’s, supported the Geology Club at SDSM&T;, and was active in the Rapid City Kennel Club where he held a leadership position and trained his own dogs. After retiring, he became actively involved in Habitat for Humanity, donating many hours to this organization; volunteered at the South Dakota Game Fish & Parks Outdoor Campus West in Rapid City donating hours every week, and he was involved in the South Dakota Grasslands Wilderness Coalition.

Chuck loved the Black Hills where he took advantage of the outdoors. In his free time he loved to hike, fish, cross country ski, and sailing in his own sailboat. He also loved jazz music. As a young man, and during his years as an attorney, Chuck loved to travel to Europe with his friends.

He was very active with his nieces and nephews in Rapid City, following many of their activities. Chuck will be remembered for being a loving brother, uncle, and friend.

He is survived by his brother, Edward (Dolores) Mickel, Farmington, NM; sisters: Kathryn “Katie” (Barry) Jensen, White River, SD; and Helen Burnette, Tulsa, OK; and many nieces and nephews: John Mickel, Valerie Mickel, Jeff Mickel, Vicki Mickel Snyder, John Sprague, Kim Pellettera, Kelly Heck, Wendy Conrad, Katie Bates, and Paige Kelly and many great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 22, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kathy Monson Lutes officiating.

Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota Army National Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Habitat for Humanity and Humane Society of the Black Hills.

Ann Rose Chyba

DEADWOOD - Ann Rose Chyba, 89, Deadwood, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Survivors include three children, Robert Chyba, Campbells Port, Wis., Jan Thorsen, Deadwood, and Ron Chyba.

Arrangements are pending with Chaput Funeral Home of Deadwood.

Lucile Ann Burnett Gibson

FOLSOM, Calif. - Lucile Ann (Burnett) Gibson, a former resident of Rapid City, S.D., died on September 25 in Folsom, California.

A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, October 19, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Rapid City. She will be buried at the Black Hills National cemetery.

Lucile was born October 14, 1918, at Macksburg, Iowa, to William E. and Iva Burnett. She resided with relatives Cloyce and Vilda Corker and graduated from Mitchell High School and Dakota Wesleyan University. She married Alfred "Bud" Gibson in 1940. She resided in Rapid City from 1953 until 1991, where she was active in South Dakota politics and many city and state organizations including Toastmistress, Business and Professional Women, Black Hills Reading Council, Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and Black Hills Teachers Association. She held office in the Douglas and Rapid City Educational Associations, was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rapid City and served as a volunteer for Widowed Persons Service, a program sponsored by AARP. Lucile taught school in both Rapid City and Douglas school districts from 1956 to 1980.

She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Gibson Lamb and Shirley Anderson, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, "Bud" Gibson, and an infant son.

She will live on in the hearts of all those lives she touched with her giving, humor, strength and wisdom.

Jessica Cooke

RAPID CITY - Jessica Cooke, 8, Rapid City, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, in an automobile accident near Hot Springs.

Survivors include her parents, Scott and Lori Cooke, Rapid City; two sisters, Beth Cooke, Rapid City, and Missy Braddock, Muskegon, Mich.; and grandparents Sally Cooke, Muskegon, and Larry and Lynn Toman, Rapid City.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at First Wesleyan Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Mike Schultz officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.

Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Howard Walter Miller

STURGIS - Howard Walter Miller, 91, Sturgis, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Miller, Sturgis; one son, Harvey Miller, Kent, Wash.; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two stepsons, Donald Kost, Gillette, Wyo., and Ernest Kost, Canyon Country, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Joyce Simons, Gillette, and Doris McGee, Fort Pierre; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, and for one hour before services Friday, Oct. 19, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. James Olson officiating.

Burial, with military honors by Sturgis Honor Guard, will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Alma Oxford

LEAD - Alma Oxford, 79, Lead, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include two sons, Don Oxford, Lead, and Gary Oxford, Seattle; one granddaughter; three sisters, Dorothy Erickson and Irene Mauch, Washington, and Gladys Haeger, Rapid City; and two brothers, Leo Haeger, Washington, and Melvin Haeger, Spearfish.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead, with the Rev. Greg Kroger officiating.

Inurnment will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Maurice W. Dachtler

WHITEWOOD - Maurice W. Dachtler, 77, Whitewood, died Monday, October 15, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and Thursday for one hour prior to services at the church.

A prayer service will be held Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be Thursday, October 18, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Whitewood, with Pastor Harold Brink officiating.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Maurice was born July 5, 1924, at Sturgis, S.D., to William George and Elizabeth K. (Young) Dachtler. He grew up on the family ranch. He attended three years of high school at Nisland, S.D., before joining the U.S. Army in 1943.

Following his honorable discharge in 1945, Maurice returned to South Dakota, where he lived in Sioux Falls. He met Blanche M. Hansen at Sioux Falls, and they were married on October 27, 1945. To this union, four children were born.

For years, he traveled and worked as a mechanic. In 1968, they returned to Whitewood, and Maurice worked at Hersrud's as a mechanic. He acquired heavy equipment in the early '80s after his retirement and then owned and operated his own construction company.

Maurice married Donna Curwen at Rapid City on May 13, 2000.

He was a member of the Whitewood Presbyterian Church and the Moose Lodge in Rapid City and was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion in Sturgis.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Dachtler, Whitewood; one son and his wife, Dale and Susan Dachtler, Madison, S.D.; three daughters, Barbara and her husband Wayne Loof, Rapid City, Julie and her husband Tom Terlisner, Tucson, Ariz., and Donna Dachtler and her husband Calvin McFarland, Dayton, Nev.; one stepson and his wife, Scot and Marlene Dannenbring, Rapid City, S.D.; one stepdaughter and her husband, Sue and Leroy Schlomer, Rapid City; two brothers, Donavon Dachtler and his wife Velma, Whitewood, and Gayle Dachtler, Whitewood; one sister, Meddill Gruidel, LaVista, Neb.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.

His parents; his wife Marge; three brothers, Harold, Lowell and Lloyd; one son in infancy, Robert; and one grandson, Scott, preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Whitewood Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
