GLORIA R. SCHOENBERGER
December 10, 1962 - May 29, 2013

RAPID CITY - Gloria R. Schoenberger, 50, passed into her final rest on Wednesday, May 29th at the Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House.

She was born December 10th, 1962 in the town of Nipawin, Saskatchewan, Canada to Walter and Norma Salls.

She grew up with her family there and took all her schooling in the same town finishing her High School degree at L.P. Miller Comprehensive School. One of Gloria's first jobs was working at a Day Care Facility. It is there she first demonstrated her love of caring and looking after children.

In 1986 she met Rick Schoenberger of Yankton, South Dakota through shared functions of the same church of which they were both members. On December 21st, 1986 Gloria and Rick were married at the McClusky SDA Church in McClusky, North Dakota.

Gloria was proud to quickly complete her immigration requirements to become a US naturalized citizen with dual-citizenship for both America and Canada. Gloria never lost touch with family and those she loved on both sides of the border. The couple lived and worked in Yankton, SD until moving to Rapid City, SD in the fall of 2002. While in Yankton, Gloria gave birth to two beautiful Daughters, Tamara in 1992 and Kayla in 1997. She always displayed natural born motherly instincts and values just as her own mother, Norma had passed onto her. Many happy years were spent there as her small family grew up and prospered in her love and support.

After relocating to Rapid City, Gloria worked numerous hours for local retail stores and soon found steady employment with the Douglas School District in Box Elder, SD. She continued to display her love and caring for small children by working at the District's daycare and then with "before and after care" as well as meal supervision for the kids at Francis Case Elementary. She was greatly loved by all the staff and especially by the kids who were always smiling brightly and happy to see "Miss Gloria" looking after them.

Gloria enjoyed the outdoors and helping her husband, Rick with gardening and producing natural, wholesome food for the family. She loved camping, just walking through the neighborhood and generally staying active.

Gloria was greatly liked by anyone that met her and knew her. Everyone recognized how beautiful she was on "both the inside and the outside". She never spoke unkind words and was ever slow to anger.

Her faith and her manners always demonstrated a true Christian lifestyle. She was modest and ever so helpful to anyone in need. She definitely put others before herself.

Gloria worked hard all her years until it was discovered that she had cancer in 2010. She scaled her hours down at the school and kept forging ahead. By September of 2012, she was too ill to continue her work with the school kids. After that, she enjoyed every moment of life with her family at home up to and until the time of her passing. Gloria valiantly fought to stay active and ahead of the cancer but soon it was evident that she was losing the battle.

Her last days were spent at the Hospice House Facility of Rapid City Regional Hospital. There she was comforted by her family, friends, church members and the wonderful staff at Hospice House.

Survivors are her husband Rick of Rapid City, two daughters, Tamara and Kayla, sister Linda Doherty of Okotoks, Alberta, Canada, brother-in-law, Greg Doherty, her brother Glen Salls of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, three nephews, a niece and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in Canada, also her mother-in-law Mary Ann Schoenberger of Yankton, SD as well as a sister-in-law and brother in-law all of Yankton, SD.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 2nd at 2:00 pm at the Rapid City SDA Church (4703 South Canyon Road) with Pastor C. Melvin Walgren officiating.
