Hazel (Hanson) Back

On the eve of Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, Hazel Back, surrounded by her children singing her favorite hymns, went to be with her Lord.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at First Covenant Church in Red Wing, Minn. Mahn Family Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.

Hazel Back was born in Pingree, N.D., to Alfred and Anna Hanson on Feb. 25, 1922. When she was two years old, they moved to Glenham, where she went to country school. She graduated from Mobridge High School in 1950 and went on the teacher’s college in Aberdeen.

After that, Hazel taught country school and town school for 12 years.

Hazel attended Lutheran Bible Institute in 1954 and 1955, after which she married Christian Back on June 4, 1955, at Norway Lutheran Church in Glenham.

Together they lived in several places, Pipestone, Minn., for six years, Michigan, N.D., for one year, Velva, N.D., for one year, Staples, Minn., for six years, and Goodhue, Minn., for 12 years. Following that they moved to Red Wing, Minn., where Hazel worked as a food supervisor at Red Wing Technical College. She also taught Sunday school at First Covenant Church and helped with many Christian organizations.

After retirement Christian and Hazel went to Japan for two years. Hazel worked in the food service and Christian taught industrial arts at the Christian Academy in Tokyo.

The Backs have five adult children, Brad Back, Barbara (Robert) Owsley, Brian Back, Barry (Laura) Back and Beverly (David) Schneider; 13 grandchildren, Joseph Back, David Back, Luke (Wendi) Owsley, Elizabeth Owsley, Caleb Owsley, Benajmin (Zoe) Back, Katrina Back, Jonathan (fiancée Briana) Back, Nathaniel Back, Samuel Scheider, Abigail Schneider, Aaron Johannes Schneider and Rachael Schneider; and one great-grandson, Milo Back. Hazel is also survived by her siblings, Vivian (Richard) Schlomer, Jennie (Norris) Carlson and Agnes (Gerhardt) Schlomer, and Clarence Hanson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Christian; parents; and siblings, Mable Schlomer, Hilma Walters, Myrtle Schlomer, Violet Espeland and Vernon Hanson.

Memorials are preferred to the First Covenant Church Sunday school program.

Rose Bleyle

Funeral services for Rosalie “Rose” Dolney Bleyle, 62, of Mobridge and formerly of Aberdeen, were held Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mobridge, with Fr. Bill Hamak officiating.

Burial followed at Greenwood cemetery in Mobridge. Stout Family Funeral Home of Mobridge was entrusted with the arrangements.

Rose passed away at her home in Mobridge on Aug. 12, 2011, from complications of multiple sclerosis.

Rosalie Ann Dolney Bleyle was born Oct. 6, 1948, in Britton. She was raised on the family farm in Marshall County and attended school in Langford prior to moving to Aberdeen. She graduated from Central High School in 1966.

During her teen years, Rose participated in powder-puff demolition derbies and stockcar racing.

Shortly after high school Rose met Don Bleyle in Aberdeen. They were married on July 1, 1968, in Groton. Don left shortly thereafter for service in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. While Don was in Vietnam, Rose lived with his parents, John and Lillian Bleyle in Momence, Ill., where she worked in a factory.

After Don’s honorable discharge from the Army (he was awarded the Purple Heart), the couple moved to Hitchcock, Texas, where Rose worked as an activities director at a nursing home and was a deckhand on a shrimp boat. She and Don later lived in various coastal communities in Texas where Rose worked as a waitress and a cook.

Rose was diagnosed with MS in 1984. The Bleyle family moved to Mobridge in 1986. Rose worked for Cardinal Plastics before her health began to decline. She then provided daycare out of her home. Her favorite pastimes were bowling, darts and card games. She especially loved Texas hold-em and blitz.

Rose will be deeply missed by her husband of 43 years, Don; her children, Kari Bleyle Wright of Mobridge, Don Jr. (Melissa) Bleyle of Bismarck, N.D., and “adopted” son, Michael J. House of Bismarck; two grandsons, William W. Wright (Ravan Winterberg) of Mobridge, and Clinton B. Wright of Pasadena, Texas; along with special extended family, Katie Gilbert of Mobridge. Rose is also survived by siblings James (Judy) Dolney of Blaine, Minn., Leonard (Pam) Dolney of Cleveland, Texas, Robert (Joni) Dolney of Hebron, N.D., Lawrence Dolney of Andover, Mary Ann (Delmar) Wahl of Aberdeen, Rita (Bob) Loterbauer of Bristol, Ramona (Ken) Strohfus of Aberdeen and Alice Gilbert of Burnsville, Minn., along with other extended family and friends.

Rose was preceded in death by parents, a sister in infancy and four brothers, John, Edward, Ronald and Donnie Dolney.

James Mathew Brech, 68
September 20, 1947 - November 10, 2015

Mass of Christian burial for James Mathew Brech was held November 16 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Parkston, with the Revs. Ken Koster, John Rader, Gerald Thury and Robert Krantz and Deacon Barry Wagner as concelebrants. Lectors were John Berg and Verna Bormann. Music was furnished by Bonna McGregor, organist. Cantor was Tina Roth.

Burial was in the Sacred Heart cemetery with military graveside service. Casket-bearers were Paul Behrend, Duane Engel, Kenneth Henke, Bill Herrmann, Tracy Neugebauer, George Sandhoff, Linus Schmidt, Dave Semmler, Larry Thuringer and Robert Van Zee.

James Mathew Brech was born September 20, 1947, in Parkston to Rudolph and Clara (Thome) Brech. He grew up on the farm, attended Sacred Heart School through the eighth grade and graduated from Parkston High School in 1965.

He served in the Army National Guard for six years.

On October 28, 1972, he married Sharon Koster at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Dimock. They made their home on the farm west of Dimock. He worked for Pat Weber Construction for several years, Trail King Industries for 23 years and most recently was a courier for Avera Health until failing health.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He died Tuesday, November 10. He attained the age of 68 years.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of 43 years; daughter, Jennifer (Sam) Hoiland, Ethan; son, Scott Brech, Dimock; one brother, Dave (Patty) Brech, Menno; aunt, Bernadine Thomas, Parkston; and 10 special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Urban and Rita Koster; grandparents, Matt and Katie Brech; one nephew, Shawn Gerlach; and several aunts and uncles.

Frances Elsie (Tiede) Herrboldt, 84
August 24, 1931 - November 9, 2015

Funeral services for Frances E. Herrboldt were held November 13 at Salem Reformed Church, Menno, with the Rev. Michael Hecht officiating.

Burial was in the Menno cemetery with Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Menno, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Andrew Kanengieter, Aaron Kanengieter, Macon Oplinger, Austin Herrboldt, Ajay Herrboldt, Reid Johnson, Matt Rigo, Brian Lueders, Joshua Hofer and Micah Mastbergen.

Frances Elsie (Tiede) Herrboldt was born to Gustave and Elsie (Juhnke) Tiede of Parkston August 24, 1931. She was baptized November 8, 1931, by the Rev. Friederick Wacker. She was confirmed by the Rev. Schiller. She attended country school in rural Parkston.

She married Donald Herrboldt September 24, 1953, at Parkston by the Rev. Koehler at the Salem Congregational Church. She was a lifetime member of the Salem Reformed Church and a member of the Ladies Aid of Menno. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She worked at the Menno-Olivet Care Center from 1975 to 1979. They moved into Menno in 1993 and into the Salem Mennonite Home in Freeman in 2014.

In 2003, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows with the Rev. Chuck Ashe. In 2013, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

She died Monday, November 9, at the Salem Mennonite Home in Freeman. She attained the age of 84 years.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren: Cynthia (Gary) Loerts, Worthington, Minn., and their daughters, Stacy Walters and Hope (Micah) Mastbergen, Debra (James) Christensen, Freeman, and their daughters, Michelle (Brian) Lueders, Sheila (Matt) Rigo and Tammy (Josh) Hofer, Brenda Mettler, Menno, and her sons, Andrew and Aaron Kanengieter, Mary (James) Mettler, Menno, and their sons, Reid Johnson and Macon Oplinger, Brian (Cindy) Herrboldt, Menno, and their children, Austin (Michelle), Abby and Ajay; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys Friederich; and sisters-in-law, Alice Kost and Cleva (Norb) Wenzel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; and countless relatives and numerous friends.

Lillian (Moege) Zirpel, 85
August 25, 1930 - December 12, 2015

Funeral services for Lillian Zirpel were held December 18 at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell.

Burial was in the Flensburg Immanuel cemetery at rural Dimock. Bittner Funeral Chapel of Mitchell was in charge of arrangements.

Lillian Zirpel was born August 25, 1930, in Douglas County to Carl and Clara (Walz) Moege. She was baptized by the Rev. Paul Hempel and later confirmed in the German language in June 1943 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church at rural Dimock. She attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse in Washington Township and graduated from Parkston High School in 1948.

On June 6, 1948, she married Wally Zirpel. Together, they farmed 12 miles southwest of Mitchell. Wally died in 1993, and in 1994, she married Leonard Zirpel. Leonard died in 1998.

In 2001 she began working at Avera Select Insurance in Mitchell and retired in March 2013.

She died Saturday, December 12, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. She attained the age of 85 years.

She is survived by her five children, Caroline (Duane) Schuh, Rapid City, Bill (Kathy) Zirpel, Dell Rapids, Jim (Becky) Zirpel, Burke, Rita (Jimmie Jr.) Pope, Cleveland, Ohio, and Bob (Carolyn) Zirpel, Humboldt; six grandchildren: Mark (Josette) Schuh, Paula Arthur, Mikaela Pope, Jimmie Pope III, Hannah and Justin Zirpel; four great-grandchildren: Morgan and Lane Arthur, Ryan and Candace Wurdeman; one great-great-grandchild, Kenley Wurdeman and her very special friend, Aleck Larson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and brother, Willard Moege.

Bernice Jean (Ymker) Hempel, 73
September 1, 1942 - December 19, 2015

Funeral services for Bernice Jean Hempel will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, at the Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.

Bernice Jean Hempel was born September 1, 1942, to Herman and Ziena (Kiel) Ymker on a family farm near Corsica Lake.

She attended country school and later Southern College in Springfield, earning her two-year teaching certificate. She taught country school near Lake Andes and later Parkston Public School.

Bernice and Richard Hempel were married at the United Church of Christ in Parkston July, 19, 1969. The couple lived in Mitchell. She attended Dakota Wesleyan University to complete her bachelor of arts in elementary education. She resumed her teaching career at Rosedale Colony. She then taught at Longfellow and L.B. Williams in Mitchell. She earned Teacher of the Year and later retired while at L.B. Williams.

She died Saturday, December 19, at Firesteel Health Care Center in Mitchell at the age of 73.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Richard; two sons: Todd (Rebecca Studelska) and children, Grace and Ella, Mitchell, Tim (Nicole) and son, Nathan, Sioux Falls; her siblings: Jay (Ellen) Ymker and Janis Koster, both of Armour; Luann (Ben) Lagge, Corsica; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John.

Darlene Carda-Kuil, 73

Darlene Carda-Kuil, 73, Pierre, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at her home. Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Feigum Funeral Home, Pierre. Interment will follow at Riverside cemetery, Pierre. Online register book can be found at www.feigumvanlith.com.

Darlene was born Jan. 14, 1936, to James and Grace (Robinson) Carda and raised in the Geddes area until 1956 when she moved to Fort Pierre.

She was employed as a dishwasher and housekeeper for many years. She loved cats and animals in general. She enjoyed walking and spending time in the outdoors in the community.

She is survived by a brother, Keith Carda, of Pierre; nephew Dale Carda, of Pierre; and niece Luann Collins, of Sheridan Wyo.

Sandra Kay Bates

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Sandra Kay Bates, 40, of Rapid City, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, near Hot Springs, S.D.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Duke Corning Armory at Camp Randall in Rapid City.

Sandy was born Feb. 27, 1961, in Sioux City. She attended Longfellow, East Junior High School and East High School. She was currently stationed at Camp Rapid in Rapid City as an administrative sergeant/budget analyst for the South Dakota National Guard.

Survivors include her daughter, Ronna D. Rogers and grandson, Noah Miguel, of Sioux City; a daughter, Sunday D. Rogers of South Sioux City; parents, Dolores E. Fedie of Northglenn, Colo., and Ronald G. and his wife, Lori B. Bates, of Sioux City; a brother, Thomas A. and his wife, Jackie R. Bates, of Sioux City; sisters, Debra J. and her husband, Rodney Watson, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Laura L. and her husband, Tony Michael, of Northglenn, Colo.; and many other relatives.

A Sandra Bates memorial has been established at the Army Guard Federal Credit Union at Camp Rapid.

Anne M. Fields

LEAD — Anne M. Fields, 92, Lead, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Loving Care Group Home in Spearfish.

Survivors include two cousins, Kenny Marengo, Wilmington, Del., and Judy Hink, Lead.

A wake and rosary service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. William Zandri officiating.

Inurnment will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Chaput Memorial Chapel of Lead is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth A. Morrow

BELLE FOURCHE — Elizabeth A. Morrow, 49, Belle Fourche, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Survivors include her husband, Doug Morrow, Belle Fourche; two sons, Danny Morrow and David Morrow, both of Belle Fourche; one daughter, Donna Morrow, Rapid City; her mother, Anna Dell, Nisland; brothers, Joe Dell, Jake Dell and Ray Dell, all of Nisland, Ron Dell, Oklahoma City, Dave Dell, Spearfish, and Rob Dell, Gillette, Wyo.; and two sisters, Mary Fay and Carol Bach, both of Belle Fourche.

Wake and rosary services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Belle Fourche.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Kerry Prendiville officiating.

Burial will follow at Hope cemetery in Newell.

Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish is in charge of arrangements.
