Myron Matusiak

RAPID CITY — Myron Matusiak, 69, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather of Rapid City, died Sunday evening, Sept. 9, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He was born May 25, 1932, in Pukiw, Ukraine, and came to the United States at the age of 20, where he joined the United States Air Force shortly after. He served under General Ellsworth as his enlisted aide. After retiring from the military, he worked for Rushmore Homes and at EAFB Packing and Crating as a civilian employee.

He married Delores Greenwood in1956 in Rapid City.

He is survived by his loving wife, Delores; son Ronald, baby Kelly, of Rapid City; daughters Susan of Bahrain and Linda of Rapid City; sons-in-law, Tom Berger and Terry Brewer; daughter-in-law, Christine Matusiak; grandsons, Christopher Matusiak, Jon Matusiak, Sean Ireland, Ryan Matusiak, and Brenden Berger; granddaughters, Amanda Foltz and Sarah Brewer; great-grandsons, Cody and Zion Foltz; and nephews, Lance, Todd and Jay Kneer of Seattle, Wash., Robert and Rita Bowman, and Richard and Cecelia Bowman, all of Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alexij; mother, Natalia; brother, Walter; and sister, Nancy.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Behrens Mortuary.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Bill Paepke officiating.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

The family has asked in lieu of flowers that donations be sent in honor of Myron to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Avalencia Songer
Arnold Songer Jr.

WINNER — Avalencia Songer, 10, and Arnold Songer Jr., 12, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, as a result of a house fire in Winner.

Survivors include their parents, Arnold and Sue Songer of Winner.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner. Burial will be at Mosher Advent Chapel cemetery in Mosher.

Mason Funeral Home of Winner is in charge of arrangements.

Louise J. Wilkinson

HOT SPRINGS — Louise J. Wilkinson, 89, Hot Springs, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs.

Survivors include a daughter, Della Rae Bowers, Monroe, Ore.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.

Matilda (Halley) Stanford

WILMINGTON, Del. — Matilda was born in South Dakota, grew up in Rapid City and Tucson, Ariz. She began her career as a nutritionist but found her lifelong calling as a preschool teacher. When Covenant Preschool was founded, Matilda was the head teacher and taught the class of four-year-olds. She loved children and also taught the younger ones in Sunday school at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant for many years.

This love of children extended to the congregation, and Matilda served faithfully three separate terms on the Church's Board of Deacons. For most of that time, she was also in charge of the Fellowship Hour held after Worship.

Matilda served her country in the U.S. Coast Guard. She was very active in her sorority, Chi Omega, PEO Chapter F. Other interests included sculpturing, painting, sewing and gardening. Matilda and her husband, Chuck, who predeceased her by several months, also enjoyed traveling and square dancing.

Survivors include a brother, Albert F. Halley, Rapid City; two children, Tom Stanford, Worchester, Mass., and Frances Lissette Stanford Frampton, Claymont; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ryan Kendall Pierce

BELLE FOURCHE — Ryan Kendall Pierce, 21, Belle Fourche, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, as a result of an ATV accident while gathering cattle at a Wyoming ranch.

Survivors include his parents, Jess and Patti Pierce, Belle Fourche; two brothers, Adam Pierce and Robert "Bobby" Pierce, both of Belle Fourche; maternal grandmother, Elsie Gorder, Belle Fourche; paternal grandparents, Verle and Bonnie Pierce, Belle Fourche; maternal great-grandmother, Helen Fager, Belle Fourche; and paternal great-grandmother, Ardeth Tomek, Twin Valley, Minn.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Hans Sacrison officiating. Burial will be at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.

Mathilda 'Tillie' Lincoln Joseph

RAPID CITY — Mathilda "Tillie" Lincoln Joseph, 87, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include one daughter, Alma Andrews, Rapid City; four sons, Namose Joseph, Ronald Joseph and Donald Joseph, all of New Orleans, and Jerald Joseph, Charleston, S.C.; one sister, Dorothy McKnight, New Orleans; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

A vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral in Our Lady's Chapel, Rapid City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Our Lady's Chapel, with the Rev. Brian Christensen officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.

Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of the arrangements.

Joe Leonard

SPEARFISH — Joe Leonard, 89, Spearfish, died Sept. 6, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include one son, James Leonard, Avon, Conn.; three daughters, Mary Pritchett, Englewood, Colo., Peggy Zieser, Rowley, Iowa, and Catheryn Mitchell, Spearfish; three sisters, Gertrude Slick, Winthrop, Iowa, Rita Fox,

Waterloo, Iowa, and Patricia Cruz, Mira Loma, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

In keeping with Joe's wishes, his body was cremated, and there will be no visitation.

A rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the church, with the Rev. Kerry Prendiville officiating. Inurnment will be at Rose Hill cemetery in Spearfish.

Fidler Funeral Chapel of Spearfish is in charge of arrangements.

Glenn A. Fingerson

SPEARFISH — Glenn A. Fingerson, 67, of Spearfish, S.D., died unexpectedly on Saturday, September 8, 2001, while vacationing in the Willmar, Minn., area. Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 14, 2001, at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.

Glenn Alvin Fingerson was born on May 5, 1934, at Billings, Mont., the son of Ellsworth Earl and Pearl Ivah (Gilbert) Fingerson. In 1946, their family moved to Huron, S.D., where he graduated from Huron High School in 1953. Following High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1955. He later continued his education at the University of South Dakota, graduating in 1961 with his Law Degree. He was self-employed as a partner of Fingerson-Erickson Law Firm in Huron, S.D., and following his retirement, he became associated with Morgan-Theeler-Cogley and Peterson of Mitchell and Huron, where he was currently serving of-counsel with this firm.

Glenn was united in marriage to Mary Ann Winans; they made their home in Huron, S.D. On May 3, 1983, Glenn was united in marriage to Nelda J. Loftis at Sioux Falls, S.D. They continued to live in Huron until 1998, when he retired and moved to Spearfish, S.D.

Glenn was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Delta Tau Delta, USD Alumni and the Masons.

Surviving are his wife, Nelda; mother, Pearl Ivah Holliway, Missoula, Mont.; brother, Ronald Lee Fingerson, Omaha, Neb.; and sister, Chari Lipske, Missoula, Mont.

Memorials are preferred to USD Alumni or USD Law School Foundation.

Louise Wilkinson

HOT SPRINGS — Louise Wilkinson, 89, Hot Springs, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs.

Survivors include one daughter, Dell Rae Bowers, Monroe, Ore.; one son, Orman Flanagan, Quesnel, British Columbia; three sisters, Freda Duncan, Elkton, Ore., Wilma Monroe, Amissville, Va., and Dorothy Thorp, Oakridge, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Evergreen cemetery in Hot Springs.

Ernest Guy Robbins

RAPID CITY — Ernest Guy Robbins, 92, Rapid City, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include his son, David Robbins, Wasella, Alaska; his daughter, Phyllis Gladback, Mendon, Mo.; three sisters, Mildred McDermott, Eleanor Hiatt and Beulah Mack, all of Rapid City; two brothers, Charlie Robbins and Rollie Robbins, both of Rapid City; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary.

Noel I. Babcock

MADELIA, Minn. — Noel I. Babcock, 71, Madelia, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at the Madelia Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead, S.D., with burial in the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.

Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is in charge of the arrangements.

Noel is survived by his daughter and son-in-law,

Celina and Roger Mosser of Madelia; and a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Cindy Babcock of Omaha, Neb.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma Babcock, in April of 2001; a son, Clayton Babcock; and by a grandson, Ivan Babcock.

Noel was born February 10, 1930, in Wall, S.D., to Clayton and Claire (Stomley) Babock. He attended school in Spearfish, S.D. On August 20, 1952, he married Norma Miles in Iowa. After marriage, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War. After he returned home, he drove truck for a mobile-home company and also farmed. Later, he taught country school in Wall, S.D., then worked for Boeing as a dispatcher with the Minute Man Missile Project in Rapid City, S.D., moving often with the company throughout North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. He managed restaurants in Lead, S.D., and Gordon, Neb., and owning and operating a restaurant in Deadwood, S.D. In 1981, they moved to California to manage apartments, retiring in 1993 and returning to Omaha, Neb. He moved to Madelia in July of this year to be near his daughter. He was a member of the Black Hills Pioneer Society.

William P. 'Bill' Shannon

FAYETTVILLE, Tenn. — William P. "Bill" Shannon, 63, Fayettville, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at home.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Shannon, Fayettville; one son, William Shannon, Tucson, Ariz.; one daughter, Rebecca Kirby, Newell, S.D.; one sister, Carolyn McCoy, Anderson, Calif.; one half brother, Welford, Davie, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Laverne 'Vern' Schlekeway

SIOUX FALLS — Laverne "Vern" Schlekeway, 65, Sioux Falls, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at Avera McKennan Hospice Wing in Sioux Falls.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Schlekeway, Sioux Falls; one son, Brett Schlekeway, Sioux Falls; his mother, Celia Schlekeway, Lake City; one sister, Elaine Angone, Los Angeles; and eight brothers, Orion Schlekeway, Tacoma, Wash., Gene Schlekeway, Spearfish, Ronald Schlekeway, Minooka, Ill., Doran Schlekeway, Lake City, Jerry Schlekeway, Pierre, Jim Schlekeway, Mobridge, Wayne Schlekeway, Las Vegas, and Richard Schlekeway, Bartlesville, Okla.

Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, with a 7 p.m. Scripture service, at Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Christ The King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Burial will be at Woodlawn cemetery in Sioux Falls.

Duane W. Steele

MANDERSON — Duane W. Steele, 27, Manderson, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Sharps Corner.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Two Bulls-Steele, Red Shirt Village; his mother, Freda Big Road, Denver; one son, Dayton Steele, Red Shirt Village; two brothers, David White Hawk, Manderson, and Wesley Steele, Rapid City; five sisters, Mamie Steele, Heather Steele and Amy Steele, all of Rapid City, and Heather White Hawk and Anya Big Road, both of Denver.

Two-night wake begins at 2 p.m. today at St. Agnes Catholic Church Hall in Manderson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at the church hall, with the Rev. Jim Ryan, S.J., and Wilmer Mesteth officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's cemetery in Rockyford.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.
