Ruth Louison

POLSON, Mont. - Ruth Louison, 77, Polson, died Sept. 7, 2001, in Polson, after a lengthy illness.

Ruth was born Feb. 6, 1924, at Titonka, Iowa, daughter of Frank and Minnie Tryon.

At an early age, Ruth worked for room and board so that she could attend high school, graduating at East Chain, Minn., in 1941. Ruth married the love of her life, Clifford M. Louison, on March 1, 1942, in Austin, Minn.

They lived in Iowa, then moved to Rapid City and finally to Pierre in 1964. Ruth and Clifford celebrated their Golden Anniversary surrounded by numerous friends and family at the Moose Lodge in Ft. Pierre, S.D., in 1992. Throughout her marriage, Ruth was a strong supporter of Clifford in the Moose Lodge.

Ruth was employed by the State of South Dakota as a Driver's Examiner, before transferring to the Office of Driver Improvement, retiring from government in June 1996. Later that year, she moved to Polson, making her home with her daughter, Julianne, and son-in-law Dave Humphrey.

While Ruth lived in Pierre, she volunteered with the Governor's Hunt for many years. Ruth was also an active volunteer with the Capitol Christmas project.

After Ruth's retirement from state government, she traveled extensively, visiting her children and grandchildren. She always looked forward to her visits to Pierre to visit old friends and family.

Ruth is survived by four sons, Jerome Louison and wife, Lynn, of Burtonsville, Md., Rodney Louison and wife, Elizabeth, of Alexandria, Va., James Louison and wife, Connie, of Chugiak, Alaska, Jeffrey Louison and wife, Catherine, of Polson; one daughter, Julianne and her husband, David Humphrey, of Polson; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her aunt, Myrtle Peterson of Sheridan, Wyo.; and a sister-in-law, Helen Louison of Rapid City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Clifford; her brother, Roy; and a brother-in-law, Verle Louison.

Throughout her life, Ruth displayed an exceptional ability to show kindness, comfort and love to family and friends.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at Behrens Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Behrens Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bruce Baum officiating.

Burial will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.

Arrangements are under the care of Grogan Funeral Home in Polson and Behrens Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Harold Schmitz

FORT PIERRE - Harold Schmitz, 77, Fort Pierre, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Maryhouse Sub-acute Center in Pierre.

Arrangements are pending with Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre.

Mathilda 'Tillie' Lincoln Joseph

RAPID CITY - Mathilda "Tillie" Lincoln Joseph, 87, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include one daughter, Alma Andrews, Rapid City; four sons, Namose Joseph, Ronald Joseph and Donald Joseph, all of New Orleans, La., and Jerald Joseph, Charleston, S.C.; one sister, Dorothy McKnight, New Orleans; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

A vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral in Our Lady's Chapel, Rapid City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Our Lady's Chapel, with the Rev. Brian Christensen as celebrant.

Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.

Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred A. Morgan

FAITH - Mildred A. Morgan, 94, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, in Encinitas, Calif.

Mildred Almyra Morgan was born April 11, 1907, at Irene, S.D., to Frank and Lillian Dean Morgan. The family homesteaded in the Brushie area and moved into Faith in 1911.

Her career in social work took her to many South Dakota communities and finally to California in 1948. In 1990, she moved to the San Diego area to be near family.

Survivors include two nieces, Lois (Jack) Doyle, Vermillion, and Mary (Jim) Riley, Lincoln, Neb.; 10 great-nieces and nephews; and 17 great-great nieces and nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Francys Naslund.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Faith.

The public is invited to attend an evening of praise and thanksgiving by Millie's great-niece, Christian singer/songwriter Lynn Cooper, at 7 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Church.

Edwin Stoller

ELGIN - Edwin Stoller, 88, Elgin, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Jacobson Memorial Hospital in Elgin.

Survivors include one son, Wayne Stoller, Bismarck, N.D.; two daughters, Judy Holscher, Alexandria, Minn., and Fay Clegg, Rapid City; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin, and one hour before services at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elgin, with the Rev. Wayne Rouse officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be at 3 p.m. CDT at North Dakota Veterans cemetery in Mandan.

Evelyn Uttenhove

RAPID CITY - Evelyn Uttenhove, 78, Rapid City, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa.

Services are pending with Hein Funeral Home in Ipswich.

Ralph W. Van Der Vorste

SPEARFISH - Ralph W. Van Der Vorste, 53, of Spearfish, died at his home in Spearfish.

Arrangements are pending with Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish.

Ellen Troy Parker Schmidt

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Ellen Troy Parker Schmidt, 81, born March 23, 1920, in Chicago, Illinois, died September 10, 2001, in Rapid City, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Troy LaSalle Parker and Janet Smith Parker. Her early years were spent in Evanston, Illinois. When she reached her teens, most of her years were spent in Hill City, South Dakota, where her parents owned and operated Palmer Gulch Lodge. Winters during this period were spent in California. She attended Rockford College and received her BA in psychology at the University of Chicago from the hand of Robert Maynard Hutchins.

On July 6, 1950, she married Dr. Roland E. Schmidt on the terrace of Palmer Gulch Lodge. They lived in Winnfield, Louisiana; Belvedere, California; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Morgantown, West Virginia; and Eugene, Oregon. Upon

Dr. Schmidt's retirement, they returned to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, but spent all their summers in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Ellen's greatest commitment was to family and to the entertainment of family and friends, much of which took place at Palmer Gulch in the Black Hills. Her extended family greatly trusted and valued her judgement about how one ought to conduct oneself. She was widely read, with particular interest in the history and literature of the Elizabethan era. She had a flair for cooking, for gardening and garden design, and for creating a quietly elegant home. Through Ellen, her children, grandchildren and many young relatives were exposed early, often, and to their eventual profit, to "Tiffany's Table Manners for Teenagers."

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Roland E. Schmidt; by her son, Troy Neils Schmidt, daughter-in-law Alison and grandchildren Emily, Troy and Geoffrey, all of Wooster, Ohio; by her daughter, Anna Victoria Lowden, son-in-law Michael Patrick and granddaughter Ellen Goldie, all of Eugene, Oregon; by her brother, Watson Parker and his wife, Olga, of Hill City and Rapid City, South Dakota; by her nephew James Watson Parker and his wife, Karyn Kozo; her nephew David Troy Parker and his wife,

Diana, and their children, Jennifer, Sarah, Matthew and Laura; and her niece Rebecca Ellen Jensen and her husband, Larry, and their children, Elizabeth and Katherine.

Gifts in memoriam may be made to the University of Chicago, Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, Randy L. Betty Conger

HELENA, Mont. — Betty Conger, 70, Helena, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, in Helena.

Survivors include her mother, Grace Case, Hot Springs, S.D.; one daughter, Dana Weber, Helena; two grandsons; five brothers, Bob Case, Newcastle, Wyo., Frank Case, Mike Evans and Pat Evans, all of Hot Springs, and Bill Case, Lakewood, Colo.; and five sisters, Edna McAdam, Norma Haacke and Joan Sheets, all of Hot Springs, Lois Helmig, Linn, Mo., and Judy Case, Rapid City.

Hagler-Anderson Mortuary of Helena is in charge of arrangements.

William P. 'Bill' Shannon

BOONSHILL COMMUNITY, Tenn. — William P. "Bill" Shannon, 63, of Boonshill Community, Tennessee, died Sunday, September 9, 2001, at his home.

He was born November 26, 1937, in New Albany, Miss., to William L. and Myrtle (Phillips) Shannon. Bill retired from the military after serving four years in the U.S. Air Force, four years in the U.S. Marines and 18 years in the U.S. Army. He served two tours in Vietnam during his service. Bill also was a member of the VFW, Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association and the Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Wright Shannon of the Boonshill Community; a son, William H. Shannon of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Rebecca Kirby of Newell, S.D.; a sister, Carolyn McCoy of Anderson, Calif.; a half-brother, James Welford of Davie, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Ramona Sanovia of Rapid City; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be one hour before Mass of Christian Burial, which will be offered at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, at St. Isaac Jogues Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Patrick McCorkell S.J. presiding.

Interment will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City.

Local arrangements are entrusted to Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Pearl E. Cocking

RAPID CITY — Pearl E. Cocking, 89, Rapid City and formerly of Lead, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Beverly Health Care in Rapid City.

Survivors include three nieces, Beverly Bergstrom, Whitewood, Margaret Curnow, Lead, and Caryl Fancher, Safford, Ariz.; and four nephews, Eddie Watt, Lead, Joe Watt and Gary Watt, both of Rapid City, and Robert Watt, Spearfish.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Fidler Funeral Chapel in Lead, with the Rev. Greg Kroger officiating.

Inurnment will follow at Mountain Lawn cemetery in Lead.

Dr. Bertram R. Berg

HETTINGER, N.D. — Dr. Bertram R. Berg, 71, Hettinger, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.

Survivors include his wife, Francie Berg, Hettinger; two sons, Rick Berg, Fargo, and Mike Berg, St. Louis; and two daughters, Kathy Walsh, Harvey, N.D., and Cindy Halunen, Minneapolis.

A family prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Hettinger Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger, and for one hour before services Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Hettinger Lutheran Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Robert Boxrud officiating. Burial will follow at Hettinger cemetery.

Evelyn V. Allen

RAPID CITY — Evelyn V. Allen, 89, of Rapid City, died at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

She was born on May 30, 1912, in Minneapolis, Minn., to John W. and Victoria (Young) Durnin. Evelyn grew up in Minneapolis and attended St. Mary's Hall at Faribault, Minn. She also attended the University of Minnesota for two years.

Evelyn married George G. Allen on August 2, 1942, in Minneapolis, and the couple made their home in Santa Ana, Calif. They moved to Rapid City after WWII, and she has been a resident of Rapid City since that time. Evelyn and her husband owned and operated Dows Park Motel for five years. She also was a longtime employee of Landstrom's Jewelry and Haggerty's Department Store. Evelyn was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and recently was awarded her 50-year pin for membership in the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include four nieces, Charlene Doolittle, Rapid City, Maxine Oehler, Bullhead City, Ariz., Jeanine Bissette, Albuquerque, N.M., and Corinne Weyrich of greater Phoenix. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985 and by a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Boyd Thybo, in 1998.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. William C. Hibbert and Deacon Virginia Bird officiating.

Interment will follow at Mountain View cemetery.

A memorial has been established for St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
