Eleanor Jeanne Richards

RAPID CITY — Eleanor Jeanne Richards, 67, of Rapid City, entered the presence of our Lord after a long illness on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at a local nursing home.

Eleanor Jeanne was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., on June 7, 1934, to Phillip and Eleanor (Rowen) McNally. She was known to many in her life as "E.J." She graduated from St. Veronica's High School, Pittsburgh, in l952. In keeping with her love of the theatre, city life and warm weather, E.J. moved to Los Angeles to follow a dream in 1955. In 1960, she married the love of her life, Jerome (Jerry) G. Leadingham. Together they raised two daughters, Joanie and Laurie, and E.J. enjoyed success as a real estate agent. Following Jerry's death in 1975, E.J. and her daughters moved to the lovely, art-centered community of Laguna Beach, California. In 1979 she married Clinton E. Richards and enjoyed world traveling through the 1980's. In 1995 Mr. Richards died and E.J. relocated to Rapid City, S.D., to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She came to love the friendliness of South Dakota and the beauty of the Black Hills.

E.J. had tremendous capacity to love and be compassionate, always spotting out the best qualities in everyone and offering encouragement to them. Her love of Jesus carried her through many difficulties throughout her life. She will be remembered for her generosity in giving and her special fondness of babies, dogs and cats! E.J. loved books, plays, movies and music and was unbeatable at the game of Scrabble. We will all miss her sparkling green eyes, bright smile and wacky sense of humor.

Besides her first and second husband, she was preceded in death by both of her parents and her sister, Joan Lewis, in 1988.

E.J. is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Joanie and Joel Anderson of Rapid City, and Laurie and Jeff Schick of Peoria, Arizona. She was known as "Grandy" to her five grandchildren, Alden, Laurie, Ryan and Holly Anderson and Elizabeth Schick. She is also survived by four nieces and one nephew and a special friend, Colleen Kerk of Rapid City and her three children, Josie, Steven and Janna.

We love you, Mom ... you are always in our hearts and our thoughts and we thank God for you in our prayers. God bless you.

The family would love to offer sincere thanks to all of the staff of the Clarkson Mountain View Guest Home for always going the extra mile to make Mom so comfortable and for meeting so many needs in her life during the past 17 months. Our thanks also extend to Hospice of the Black Hills for helping make her transition to Eternal Life easier.

He attended and graduated from NDSU in pre-veterinary Medicine and Animal Science in 1953. He returned to Maddock to farm, and in 1954 was an IFYE (North Dakota International Foreign Youth Exchange) delegate to England/Wales where he met Francie Marie Brink, an IFYE delegate to Switzerland from Montana. They were married on June 2, 1957, and farmed in Maddock until 1962. He then attended the University of Minnesota School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 1966. He moved to Hettinger with his family where he practiced at the West River Veterinary Clinic until his retirement in July of 2000.

He is survived by wife, Francie, daughter Kathy Walsh and son-in-law Dennis of Harvey; son Rick and daughter-in-law Tracy of Fargo, daughter Cindy Halunen and Todd of Minneapolis, Minn., son Mike and daughter-in-law Wendy of St. Louis, Mo.; brother Rolf and wife, Helen, Maddock; six grandsons, Brian, Aaron and Kevin Walsh, George and soon-to-arrive Baby Halunen, and Jack Berg; special nieces, Katie and Janet

Sallgren Tobin and husband Phil, Golden, Ill.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Bert was a dedicated veterinarian, but he was foremost a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He touched the hearts of everybody and anybody he ever came in contact with. He measured success not in dollars and cents, but in friends and especially family. His wealth came in friendships and he knew no strangers, only friends he hadn't met. His life was devoted to helping others and his true joy came from making lives better for those around him.

Bert loved North Dakota and believed in giving his time and energy to organizations, which had a positive impact on people's lives.

Bert was a lifetime supporter of 4-H. He was an IFYE delegate, a 4-H Leader for 38 years, served as ND 4-H Foundation Director and president. In 1990, he received the Distinguished Service Award, the highest 4-H award given, for a lifetime of service to youth and 4-H.

Dr. Berg deeply cared for and respected animals. He was active in the North Dakota Veterinary Medical Association for over 30 years, serving in many leadership roles including president of the organization. He was recognized as Veterinarian of the Year by NDVMA in 1998. Dr. Berg also served the American Veterinary Medical Association for over 30 years, most recently on the Judicial Council and the Accreditation Committee.

Bert was an NDSU Bison from 1948 when he entered NDSU through his recently completed 9-year term as Alumni director, he believed in leadership and scholastic opportunities for students.

Bert was a living example of community spirit. He was always in the middle of any Hettinger event that helped kids or promoted the community. His role as 9-year president of the Hettinger Black Devils Booster Club, even after his children graduated, is symbolic of a lifetime of supporting and encouraging others. He loved all sports and activities, especially those his family participated in.
