Rhonda Fischer

OMAHA, Neb. - Rhonda Fischer, 46, Omaha and formerly of Rapid City, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Lied Transplant Center in Omaha.

Survivors include one son, Jason Fischer, Omaha; her parents Lyle and Frances Fischer, Rapid City; three brothers, Alan Fischer, Powell, Wyo., Robin Fischer, Houston, and Mark Fischer, Rapid City; and one sister, Julie Reuer, Rapid City.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City, with the Rev. Dwight Stensgaard officiating.

Elva Leona Steele

RAPID CITY - Elva Leona Steele, 80, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 2, 2001, in Rapid City, South Dakota.

She is survived by Marilyn Steele (daughter) of Rapid City, S.D.; James Steele (son) of Rapid City, S.D.; Robert Steele (son) of Black Hawk, S.D.; Byrl Baker (brother) of Gordon, Neb.; Jane Young (sister) of Elgin, Ill.; Lola Mae Cook (sister) of Casper, Wyo.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carney Steele.

Graveside services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Pine Lawn Memorial Park, with Pastor Robert Rehberg officiating.

Services are under the direction of Campbell, Paula and Quinn Funeral Service.

John F. Perli

RAPID CITY - John F. Perli, 80, Rapid City, died Sunday, September 30, 2001, at his home.

John attended high school in Rapid City and graduated from Rapid City, S.D., High School in 1939.

In 1949 John and Inez began their lifelong business of ranching southeast of Rapid City, where they were devoted to raising their three sons. John has a never-ending passion for ranch life.

In 1996, John and Inez moved to Rapid City and continued to be part of the family-operated ranches. John was known in the community as one of the Perli boys who were always ready and willing to help out family and friends. This work ethic and compassion continues to be a family tradition.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral. He served on the Spring Creek School Board, was President and Lineman of the Dry Creek Telephone Company, and supported the local 4-H Club, of which his sons were members. John and Inez spent most every wedding anniversary at the Western Junior Livestock Show, where they traditionally placed in the Plant Identification Competition.

He is survived by his wife, Inez (Koopman) Perli of Rapid City; one sister, Frances (Perli) Baker of Rockerville, S.D.; three sons, Rodney and his wife, Lou, of Holland, Minn., Richard and his wife, Sharon, and Keith and his wife, Jacque, all of Rapid City, S.D.; and 10 grandchildren, who gave him great joy, Heather (Perli) Rushmeyer and her husband, Mike, Sauk Rapids, Minn., Nathan Perli, Rapid City, S.D., Angela (Perli) Amlund and her husband, Josh, Maple Lake, Minn., Lisa (Perli) Teigen and her husband, J.O., Gillette, Wyo., Brian Perli, Katie Perli, Tayler Perli, Kaleb Britton and Raina Perli, all of Rapid City, S.D., and Laura Perli, Holland, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Visitation was Wednesday, October 3, 2001, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Behrens Funeral Home. A rosary followed at 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, October 4, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, with Father Brian Christensen.

Burial will be at Mount Calvary cemetery in Rapid City.

A memorial has been established to provide a cash incentive for the Youth Plant Identification at the Western Livestock Show.

Harry Simek

KADOKA - Harry Simek, 90, Kadoka, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at Kadoka Care Center.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Simek, Kadoka; one daughter, Josephine "JoAnn" Lettelier, Norris; several grandchildren; and one sister, Annabelle Heiser, Belvidere.

Arrangements are pending with Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka.

Roger D. King

SEVERN, Md. — Roger D. King, 58, Severn and formerly of Rapid City, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at an Annapolis, Md., hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Coleen King, Burke, Va.; two daughters, Sarah Pentz, Bristow, Va., and Kristine Vallette, Ranson, W.Va.; one son, Justin King, Charlestown, W.Va.; his parents, Carl and Edith King, Rapid City; two sisters, Janice Gednalske and JoAnn Sauer, both of Rapid City; and one granddaughter.

Local arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Kenneth Tolbert

RAPID CITY — Kenneth Tolbert, 97, Rapid City and formerly of Huron, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Custer.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille, Rapid City; one stepson, Leonard Wormstadt, Custer; and four stepgrandchildren.

Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at Kuhler Funeral Home in Huron, with the family present from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., and before services Monday, Oct. 15, at Church of the Resurrection in Huron.

A scripture service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Joe Holzhauser officiating.

Burial will be at Riverside cemetery in Huron.

Gloria Ann Pettigrew

PINE RIDGE — Gloria Ann Pettigrew, 60, Pine Ridge, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Wounded Knee.

Survivors include four sons, James Pettigrew, Michael Pettigrew, John Pettigrew and Jason Pettigrew, all of Wounded Knee; three daughters, Michelle Pettigrew, Rapid City, Susan Pettigrew, Pine Ridge, and Sandra Pettigrew, Wounded Knee; four brothers, Clifton Clifford and Joseph Clifford, both of Pine Ridge, Patrick Clifford, Manderson, and Phil Clifford, Wounded Knee; four sisters, Theresa Perkins and Anita Ecoffey, both of Wounded Knee, Dorothy Lafferty, Pine Ridge, and Mary Wilson, Payabaya Community Number Four; and 13 grandchildren.

A one-night wake begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at Billy Mills Hall, with the Rev. Jim Ryan officiating.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

John Francis Stangle

COVINGTON, Wash. — John Francis Stangle, 71, of Covington, passed away at home October 8, 2001. Born May 26, 1930, in Creston, S.D., Mr. Stangle served in the Air Force for 21 years, retiring in 1969. John worked for Washington State Department of Licensing, retiring in 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Gretchen Stangle, of Covington; sons John Stangle Jr. of Enterprise, Ala., and Mike Stangle, San Diego, Calif.; daughter Julie Stangle of Seattle, Wash.; brothers Sonny Stangle, Leo Stangle and Tom Stangle, all of South Dakota; sister Mary Ann Voyles of Wall, S.D.; and two grandchildren. Services were held Friday, October 12, 2001, at Marlatt Funeral Home in Kent, Wash., with interment at Tahoma National cemetery, Kent, Wash.

Russell Lee Smith

BOX ELDER — Memorial services for Russell Lee Smith, 42, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Ellsworth AFB Freedom Chapel, with Chaplain Gaither officiating. Russell was born August 7, 1959, at Carswell Air Force Base, Fort Worth, Texas, to Robert H. and Dorothy A. (Marsh) Smith. He died October 2, 2001, in Rapid City. He was buried in Ardmore, Okla., after services on October 6.

He graduated from Altus High School in 1977. He had been a resident of Box Elder since 1994.

He retired in July as a Master Sergeant in the Air Force following 24 years of service.

He and Tamara Marie Curtis were married Feb. 14, 1978, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Tamara; a daughter, Kimberly A. Smith, Travis Air Force Base, Calif.; a son, Anthony L. Smith, Dyes AFB, Abilene, Texas; his mother, Dorothy Smith, Ardmore, Oklahoma; two sisters, Lauren McLaughlin, Ardmore, Okla., and Lisa Jones, Oklahoma City; and one brother, Ricky of Austin, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his father on July 2, 2000.

Audrae Euginie Visser

MABANK, Texas — Audrae Euginie Visser, 82, Mabank and formerly of Hot Springs, S.D., died Monday, Oct. 8, in Mabank.

Survivors include one son, Lou Guardino, Mabank; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at United Methodist Church in Payne Springs, Texas, with the Rev. James Jones officiating.

Catherine Dilley

SPEARFISH — Catherine Dilley, 88, Spearfish, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Survivors include five daughters, T. Jeannette Senn, Reston, Va., Judith Blair, Littleton, Colo., Eileen Landers and Toni Rae Wiederich, both of Rapid City, and Patty Ragsdale, Glenrock, Wyo.; two sons, Walter Brothers, Flint, Mich., and Gerald Brothers, Rapid City; 19 grandchildren; one stepdaughter, Betty Dodd, Anchorage, Alaska; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Sturgis.

Dexter E. Barlow

RAPID CITY — Dexter E. Barlow, 81, of Rapid City, died Thursday, October 11, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Sturgis, S.D.

Dexter was born November 15, 1919, in Sioux Falls to Peter and Ida (Severson) Barlow. He grew up in Sioux Falls, graduating from high school in 1939. Dex entered the military and served in the Army Air Corps as a B-17 pilot, flying 51 missions over Europe. After his service, he returned to Rapid City where he attended South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, graduating with a civil-engineering degree in 1949. Dex then attended the University of Oregon in the graduate physics program for a year. He returned to Rapid City and married Ruth Mae Siebrecht on December 2, 1952.

Dexter was employed as a purchasing agent with Northwestern Engineering Company for 20 years. In his semi-retirement he was an equipment salesman with Sheehan Equipment for 10 years. Dex was active in recent years as a member of the VFW Post 1273 honor guard. He was a life member of Rushmore VFW Post 1273, a life member and past Seam Squirrel for the Military Order of Cooties and life member in the BPO of Elks Lodge 1187, all in Rapid City.

Dexter is survived by his daughter, Jayne Riske and her husband Dennis of Rapid City; his four sons, Tom Barlow and his wife Denise, Jim Barlow, Pete Barlow and Frank Barlow, all of Rapid City; his brother, Cecil Barlow of Sioux Falls; his 11 grandchildren, Bill Barlow and his wife Karrie of Rapid City, Jake Schad and his wife Julie of Parker, Colo., Ryan Schad of Yokota Air Base in Japan, Shawna Maher, Dustin Barlow, Joshua Barlow, Trista Maher, Brad Riske, Samantha Rae Barlow, Brady Barlow and Katie Jayne Barlow, all of Rapid City; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Beverly Olsen.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 16, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, with Rev. Preston Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City.

A memorial has been established to the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 honor guard.

Glenn W. Sorenson

STURGIS — Glenn W. Sorenson passed away October 11, 2001, at the Fort Meade Veterans Hospital at Sturgis, S.D. Memorial services will be held Sunday, October 14, at 1:30 p.m. at the Country Church at Four Corners, Wyo., with Pastors Charles Dutcher and Bill Haley officiating.

Glenn was born April 9, 1928, in Wessington, S.D., to Karl and Marie (Goglin) Sorenson. He attended schools in eastern South Dakota before enlisting in the Army. He married Alberta "Bert" Nebendahl in 1950 in Elk Point, S.D. They settled in Thermopolis, Wyo., where Glenn was a barber for 16 years. He later moved to Lead, S.D., where Glenn worked for Homestake until his retirement in 1990. Glenn enjoyed working, hunting and fishing. His family and grandchildren meant the world to him. Glenn and Alberta enjoyed several winters as snowbirds to the New Mexico and Arizona areas. Glenn and Alberta moved to Newcastle, Wyo., in 1998.

Survivors include his wife Alberta; son Lenny (Berger) and Kayce Sorenson of Ten Sleep, Wyo.; daughter Sandy and David Fisher of Newcastle, Wyo.; granddaughter Sarah and Joel Chase of Spearfish, S.D.; grandson Rick and Kizzy Fisher of Laramie, Wyo.; three brothers, Arthur Sorenson of Madison, S.D., Melvin and Betty Sorenson of Bellevista, Arkansas, and Kenn and Gerri Sorenson of Rapid City, S.D.; four sisters, Ruth and Justin Lauer of Fremont, Neb., Shirley and Dan Barker of Madison, S.D., Velma and Chuck Wagner of Alexandria, S.D., and Carolen and Bob Weeks of Cordova, Tenn; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Sorenson in 1957.

A memorial has been established to the Fort Meade VA Hospice program at Sturgis, S.D.

Rose McDonnell

WALL — Rose McDonnell, 75, Wall, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Douglas County Memorial Hospital in Armour.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas McDonnell, Wall; one brother, Lyle Melvin, Rapid City; and one sister, Cecilia Melvin, Wall.

Arrangements are pending with Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall.

JoAnn Trask

RAPID CITY — JoAnn Trask, 61, Rapid City, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Gregg Trask, Rapid City; two sons, Robert Trask, Venice, Calif., and John Trask, Rapid City; and one brother, John Rozell, Sioux Falls.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.
