Mildred Agnes (Porter) Spargur

CUSTER - Mildred Agnes (Porter) Spargur passed away while holding the hands of her two oldest granddaughters on May 20, 2002, at the Custer Community Hospital.

Mildred was born on March 8, 1910, to Effie Jane (Hare) and George Edwin Porter in Custer, South Dakota. She had 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

Mildred married Irvin Spargur on April 1, 1930. They had four sons, Jim, twins Jack and Jerry, and Gene. She cooked and was a waitress in various cafes in Custer. She cleaned houses, sewed and did washing and ironing for people. She loved her work and in her 70's trained as a cook at the Custer hospital.

She and Irvin lived in Custer and Hill City until Irvin died in September 1973. Mildred moved to the Hillyo Manor in Hill City to be closer to her family. She loved to crochet and made beautiful tablecloths for all of her "daughters," granddaughters and great-granddaughters. She was a wonderful cook and would fix Sunday dinner in case any of the family came. If they didn't, she would call them to come and help her eat the food, after which she would usually sneak in a game of Yahtzee or canasta!

God was very important in her life. She was a member of the Little White Church, and on July 28, 1974, was baptized by immersion despite her morbid fear of the water.

She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America, and served on their local board many times over the years.

She was evidently not Y2K compatible, as, after a short illness beginning on January 1, 2000, she became a resident of the Colonial Manor in Custer, where she received excellent care and started a college fund for her 2 great-granddaughters with her winnings from bingo!

She was loved deeply by her family and her greatest joys came from their company. She gave unselfishly to everyone, especially her family, who will all greatly miss her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, several brothers and sisters, an infant grandson and a beloved daughter-in-law.

She is survived by her sons, Jim (Jean) of Hill City, Jack of San Diego, Calif., Jerry (Alice) of Gillette, Wyoming, and Gene (Pat) of Custer, and one sister, Rose Dean of Custer. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and their spouses, 23 great-grandchildren and spouses and her 2 precious great-great-granddaughters. Another great-great-grandchild is expected in July.

Services will be held at the Little White Church in Hill City on Saturday, May 25, at 10 a.m. Pastors Dwayne Snell and Bill Savery will be officiating, with burial at the Custer cemetery. A memorial will be established in her name.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Custer.
