Daniel Victor Rippe

RAPID CITY - Daniel V. Rippe, 54, of Rapid City, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at his home.

Beloved son of Louis and Bea Rippe of Rapid City, soulmate of Kathy Huebner of Rapid City, brother to Don and his wife Judy of Belle Fourche, brother to Mike and his wife Connie of Missoula, Mont., father to Jason of Bismarck. He will be remembered by his aunts and uncles, Vicki and Joe Wallace of Rapid City, Roy Rippe of Fort Meade, and Freida Kammarath of Porterville, Calif. He leaves a beautiful assortment of nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Dan was a 1965 graduate of Cathedral High School and 20-year retired Navy veteran, all of it spent as a Medical Corpsman. During a tour in Vietnam, Dan was attached to a Marine Corps Infantry Unit, seeing much combat. In this and all things during his career he did his duty with courage and professionalism, receiving numerous medals and commendations. Dan was a disabled veteran, life member of the VFW, and TREA.

Dan's love of the Black Hills was complete. He rode his motorcycle through them in all seasons, camping, fishing, and absorbing Lakotah Culture along the way. He was a human magnet for people of all stripes, always willing to fix a meal, share a story or lend a hand. He loved people and touched the lives of many.

Dan never knew a stranger, was a genuine friend to all. In a troubled world the loss of so genuine a spirit is great indeed.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Kirk Funeral Home's Chapel of Light in Rapid City, with Fr. Brian Lane and Dr. Kenneth Leonard officiating. Inurnment will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and three brothers.

A memorial has been established.

John L. Hess Jr.

SIOUX FALLS - John L. Hess Jr., 39, Sioux Falls and formerly of Custer, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Survivors include his parents, John and Marge Hess, Flandreau; two brothers, Mark Hess, Trinidad, Colo., and Paul Hess, Rapid City; and four sisters, Michele Peters, Onaway, Mich., Kristi Jo Johnson and Tonya Hess, both of Rapid City, and Jeri Sabie, Flandreau.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. Scripture service, at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 2, at Saints Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Flandreau, with the Rev. Richard Fox officiating.

Burial will be at St. Leo's cemetery in Pipestone, Minn.

Wilma Bell Johnson

RAPID CITY - Wilma Bell Johnson, 85, Rapid City, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at her home.

She was born on November 11, 1916, to Seymour and Cora (Gray) Snyder in Johnstown, Neb. She graduated from Johnstown High School in 1934.

She moved to Rapid City when she was 17. She attended St. John's Nursing Home and graduated with a nurse's degree in 1938.

On September 16, 1939, she married Harold Olaf Johnson in Rapid City, S.D. She was a nurse at St. John's Nursing Home, VA Medical Center, Hot Springs, S.D., and the Methodist Hospital, Hot Springs, S.D. In 1956, they began their own business, Johnson Transfer and Storage; she was the managerial assistant until 1991.

She enjoyed the outdoors, tending to flowers, gardening and yard work, and spending time with family and caring for her pets.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Johnson of Rapid City, S.D.; one brother, Ralph Snyder; a cousin, Robert Johnson; three grandchildren, Deborah Marr, Sharla Scull and Mark Miller; and four great-grandchildren, Melissa Friese, R.C. Scull, Josiah Scull and Sophia Scull.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, on March 31, 1983; three brothers; and four sisters.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 2, 2002, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 3, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Reverend Donald Brendtro officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Kirk Finley Carlsten

STURGIS - Kirk Finley Carlsten, 81, Sturgis, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 6, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the First Wesleyan Church on Junction Avenue in Sturgis, with Rev. Dwight Peterson officiating.

Following his request, his body was cremated.

Kirk was born November 29, 1920, at Denver, Colo., to Conrad and Jean (Kirk) Carlsten. He grew up in Denver and graduated from Colorado School of Mines at Golden, Colo. After graduation, he worked for Shell Oil Company. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as an electrical technician. After his discharge, he worked as an engineer for the Bureau of Reclamation. He married Alma Beug on April 7, 1967, at Aspen, Colo. The couple moved to South Dakota, and Kirk worked at the C.P. Clare Electrical Company in Rapid City until retiring in 1977.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Carlsten, Sturgis; two sons, Kirk Carlsten Jr., Tucson, Ariz., and Douglas Carlsten, Deadwood, S.D.; one daughter, Nancy Rollins, Denver, Colo.; one stepson, Kurt Hartman, Sturgis; one stepdaughter, Effie Johnson, Vale; one sister, Phoebe Everett, Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established to the First Wesleyan Church in Sturgis.

Kenneth D. Johnson

RELIANCE - Kenneth D. Johnson, 78, Reliance, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Johnson, Reliance; two sons, Dennis Johnson, Abilene, Kan., and Robert Johnson, Rapid City; one daughter, Patricia Lien, Chamberlain; one brother, Dale Johnson, Wessington Springs; two sisters, Evelyn Dearborn, Miller, and Joan Krog, Gillette, Wyo.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 3, at Wevik Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain.

A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Reliance.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at the church, with the Rev. Stephen Huffstetter, the Rev. Jim Walters and the Rev. Chuck Wonch officiating.

Burial will be at St. Placidus Catholic cemetery in Gann Valley.

Ray Butolph

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Ray Butolph, 72, Newcastle, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Weston County Manor in Newcastle.

Survivors include two sisters, Edith Clark, Hawaii, and Nancy Zerbst, Newcastle, and one brother, Glenn Butolph, Newcastle.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Worden Chapel in Newcastle.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 2, at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Norm Brotzman officiating.

Burial will be at Green Mountain cemetery in Sundance, Wyo.

Memorials may be made to Weston County Health Services Foundation.

Glenn D. Smith

AURORA, Colo. - Glenn D. Smith, 50, Aurora and formerly of Rapid City, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in Aurora.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Smith, Aurora; three sons, Darren Smith and Nathen Hoyt, both of Aurora, and James Bourne, Frederick, Colo.; two daughters, Cathy Carbone, Westminster, Colo., and Hope Reese, Craig, Colo.; his father, Leo Smith, Bennett, Colo.; two brothers, Ted Smith, Parker, Colo., and Scott Smith, Fort Lupton, Colo.; one sister, Deanna Thompson, Littleton, Colo.; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Roy Edward Siebrecht

REDFIELD - Roy Edward Siebrecht, 91, Redfield, died Monday, May 13, 2002, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Siebrecht, Redfield; four sons, Darwin Siebrecht, Cottage Grove, Minn., Dale Siebrecht, Mounds View, Minn., and Ron Siebrecht and Don Siebrecht, both of Redfield; five daughters, Janice Gardner, Aberdeen, Marlene Parker, Rapid City, LaVonne Robinson, Cresbard, LaVerne Zeck, Redfield, and Carole Binger, Pierre; 26 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruby Siebrecht, Redfield, and Melba Sour, Puyallup, Wash.

Services were held Thursday, May 16, at United Methodist Church in Redfield.

Burial was at Ashton cemetery.

Thelen Funeral Home of Redfield was in charge of arrangements.

Patience 'Pat' Edwards Bakeberg

SPEARFISH - Patience "Pat" Edwards Bakeberg, 72, loved by so many family and friends, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 22, 2002.

Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

A rosary and Christian prayer service will be Friday, May 24, 2002, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 844 5th Street, Spearfish, S.D.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2002, at 10 a.m. MDT, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with Father Kerry Prendiville officiating. Burial will follow at the Dupree cemetery.

Pat was born September 22, 1929, in Dupree, S.D., the first of five children born to James (Edd) and Ruth (Maynard) Edwards. When Pat was a young girl, her family moved to Iowa. The family returned to the Dupree area, where Pat attended and graduated from Dupree High School. Pat attended Summer School in Aberdeen, S.D., in 1947, returning to Dupree to teach at the Cloverleaf School in 1947-48. She then began what would be a lifelong career with the ASCS office.

Pat met and married the love of her life, Leo Anthony Bakeberg, while in Dupree. The couple married on April 10, 1950. To this union ten children were born.

Following the marriage, Pat and Leo moved to Sioux Falls where Pat worked at Shonemann's Lumber for one year. In 1951, Leo and Pat moved their family back to Dupree. Pat returned to work at the Ziebach County ASCS office in 1951, continuing to work at the office until the family moved to Spearfish in 1978. She returned to work with ASCS at the Butte/Lawrence County office in 1979, where she worked until her retirement in 1989.

Pat enjoyed quilting, card playing, traveling, bowling, gardening, cooking and canning, and spending time with family and friends.

Grateful to have shared her life are her husband, Leo Bakeberg, Spearfish; her children, Ruth (Dave) Slaughter, Belle Fourche, August (Nancy) Bakeberg, Rapid City; Leo Bakeberg Jr., Vermillion, Donald Bakeberg, Spearfish, Mary Jo (Darrell) Jundt, Derby, Kan., Alan (Deb) Bakeberg, Pierre, John Bakeberg, Gloria Bakeberg, Rapid City, Todd (Billie Jo) Bakeberg, Spearfish, and Shelly (Steve) Brito, Albuquerque, N.M.; and grandchildren, John and Joseph Slaughter, Brian Larson, Andy, Brandon, and Aric Bakeberg, Corrin, Mathias, and Clayton Grueb and their father, Herb Grueb, Amy Mae, Alan James, Leo Anthony III and their mother, Trudy Bakeberg Eulberg, Keenan and Trenton Bakeberg and their mother, Denise Casillas, Cera and Cassie Bakeberg and their mother, Connie Bakeberg Nelson, Matthew, Adam, Amy, Andrew, Kai, and Erin Jundt, Jason and William Bakeberg, Janesa and Jacksyn Bakeberg, Ryan, Katelyn, and Jordan Brito; great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Natalie Larson, Christian Slaughter, and Sadie Bakeberg; her siblings, Leonard Edwards, Spearfish, Jim Edwards, Absorkee, Mont., Wayne Edwards, Billings, Mont., and Lloyd Edwards, Lovell, Wyo.; her mother-in-law, Josephine Bakeberg, Spearfish; and two aunts, Marie Edwards, Spearfish, and Mabel Hinzman, Eagle Butte.

Preceding her in death are her parents, James (Edd) and Ruth Edwards, and one daughter, Debra Rose Grueb.

A memorial has been established.

David W. Kohut

RAPID CITY - David W. Kohut, 38, Rapid City, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Kohut, Rapid City; his parents, Thomas and Theresa Kohut, Ocala, Fla.; one stepson, Stan Reed, Rapid City; one stepdaughter, Brandy Hartsell, Rapid City; two sisters, Barbara Rose, Ocala, and Ione Mroczka, Carbondale, Pa.; one brother, Thomas Kohut, Carbondale; and three stepgrandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1981 to 1982.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Robert S. Tiltrum

ALCESTER - Robert S. Tiltrum, 81, Alcester, died Monday, May 13, 2002, at Brookings Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Tiltrum, Alcester; one son, Charles Tiltrum, Aurora; one daughter, Eilene Thormodsgaard, Oneida, Wis.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Milton Tiltrum, Hermosa; and one sister, Mildred Lawrenson, Beresford.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from fall 1942 to December 1945.

Services were held Friday, May 17, at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester.

Burial, with military graveside rites by Beresford American Legion, was at Pleasant Hill cemetery in Alcester.

Wass Funeral Home of Alcester was in charge of arrangements.
