Benjamin Slama

SPRINGFIELD -- Benjamin Slama, 2, Bossier City, La., died Friday (July 4, 2003) at St. Jude's Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. Benjamin is the son of Tom and Tracy Slama, of Bossier City, La.

Services are pending with the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Springfield.

Dean Korslund

VERMILLION -- Dean L. Korslund, 42, Vermillion, died Thursday (July 10, 2003) near Vermillion, as a result of a motorcycle accident.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Calvary Lutheran Church, Irene. Burial is in the Meldal Cemetery, rural Irene.

Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Sunday with the family present at the Hansen Funeral Home, Irene.

He was born Sept. 18, 1960, in Yankton to Dale and Alma (Hansen) Korslund. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He grew up in the Irene area and attended Sletten School until it closed. He graduated from Irene High School in 1978. He attended Mitchell Vo-Tech and was a power lineman for two years. He worked as a cable technician for the last 22 years and was currently employed with PrairieWave Cable Television. He married Kelly Johnson June 22, 1980, in Irene.

He loved to fish, hunt and ride his Harley. He was a loving husband, father, son and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Kelly, Vermillion; two sons: David and James, and a daughter, Tracy, all of Vermillion; his parents, Dale and Alma, Irene; a brother, Dennis, Watertown; a sister, Kathy Korslund Schenk, Irene; his mother-in-law, Becky Craig, Belle Fourche; and many other relatives and friends.

Arnold Weltz

TYNDALL -- Arnold W. Weltz, 86, Tyndall, died Friday (June 20, 2003) at Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital, Tyndall.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. today (Monday) at the United Church of Christ, Scotland, with the Rev. Del Neumeister officiating. Burial is in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland.

Pallbearers are Orville Buechler, Galen Schaeffer, Gerald Schaeffer, Jared Schaeffer, Wesley Schaeffer and Wilfred Schaeffer.

Goglin-Kelley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Aug. 5, 1916, in Scotland to Emmanuel and Pauline (Bauder) Weltz. He married Gertrude Ganske Oct. 13, 1940, at Odessa Lutheran Church in Lesterville. He owned and operated Weltz Ford and Weltz Auto Sales in Scotland for many years. He worked in maintenance at Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital for several years and drove the Scotland Ambulance for 25 years. He served on the Scotland City Council and also drove bus for many years for the Scotland School District. In November 1994, he moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa, and later became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center, Tyndall, in May 2003.

He is survived by his daughter, Janet Groen, Rock Rapids; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Sept. 17, 1989; a son-in-law, his parents and his brother.

Gail Barnes Rohweder

Gail Barnes Rohweder, 52, Yankton, died Sunday (June 22, 2003) at her home.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Ray, Cantrell and Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton, with the Rev. Marilyn Stone officiating. Burial is in the Bloomfield (Neb.) Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Dave Edwards, Ron Harris, Mark Kirby, Kevin Mackeprang, Tom Skrivans and Dave Stark.

She was born March 3, 1951, at Sioux City, Iowa, to Robert and Virginia (McDonald) Barnes. She grew up in Sioux City and attended West High School. After school, she was married and began raising her children. She was a housewife for 17 years. In 1990, she moved to Bloomfield, Neb., and worked for Waldbaum's. In 1998, she moved to Yankton and worked for Baldwin Filters for several years. She was currently working at Captain Norm's. On Feb. 28, 2003, she married Kirby Rohweder at Yankton.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose. She enjoyed watching professional football games, especially the Washington Redskins. She loved her flowers and plants. She also loved animals and enjoyed taking care of them. She especially loved and valued her family and socializing with her friends.

Survivors include her husband, Kirby Rohweder, Yankton; a son, John W. Montagne, Charles City, Iowa; a daughter, Stacey (Scott) Vance, Charles City; her mother and her husband, Virginia and Bill Wingett, Vermillion; maternal grandmother, Frances McDonald, Vermillion; a sister, Jody Irwin, LaJoya, Texas; a niece, Cathy Neal, Sioux City, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father.

John Goeken

John A. Goeken, age 78, of Utica, S.D,. died unexpectedly, Monday evening, April 7, 2003, at St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall, S.D. He had been living at Good Samaritan Center in Tyndall.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Leonard Kayser officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, with military graveside rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791.

Pallbearers will be Doug Goeken, Michael Pluimer, Nicole Herbold, Beau Vinatieri, Tyler Goeken, and Aaron Goeken.

Visitations will be 1-9 p.m. Friday, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

John was born May 18, 1924, in Raeville, Neb., to William Goeken and Justina (Struiff) Goeken, the youngest of 13 children. He married Stella T. Uhing on Oct. 23, 1945, in St. James, Neb. They were married 57 years. John attended Catholic school in Crofton and Constance, Neb. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1943-45, on the USS Juan Cabrillo in the South Pacific.

John was a member of the Farm Bureau, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus, Yankton County Livestock Feeders Association, South Dakota Cattleman's Association, where he was awarded the 1989 South Dakota Cattleman of the Year, and the South Dakota Farmer's Union. He received many awards for outstanding service. He was an Archer Oil dealer and a Cargill seed dealer.

John farmed for nearly 50 years in the Utica area. He was the Beef Superintendent of 4-H Achievement Days for many years. He enjoyed playing cards with his children and grandchildren. John and Stella were avid square dancers. Many of his family and close friends knew him as "Big John" and "Johnny." He was known for his kindness, honesty and hard work.

His memory is cherished by his son, John M. (Susan) Goeken of Utica, S.D.; daughters: Peggy L. (Ed) Pluimer of Minneapolis, Minn., Marjorie A. (Ted) Herbold of Sioux City, Iowa, Judy M. (Paul) Vinatieri of Rapid City, S.D. and Joan M. (Dale) Schaefer of Fordyce, Neb.; daughter-in-law, Gloria (Larry) Kindopp of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Other survivors include: John's brother, Herman Goeken of Yankton, S.D.; and sisters: Rose Rieken of Wayne, Neb., Veronica Lillie, Gertrude Blaschke, and Mary Ann Loecker all of Yankton, S.D.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Stella (2002); son, Ronald (1975); his parents, William and Justina; brothers: Anton Goeken, Rudolph Goeken, Otto Goeken, Henry Goeken; sisters: Anna Reuss, Elizabeth Reifenrath, Josephine Goeden; and many nieces and nephews.

We will miss our parents deeply.

Irene Ann Lane

Irene Ann Lane, age 82 of Yankton, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Gregg Frankman officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brett Zavadil, Jason Wetering, Stanley Hoefs Jr., Wayne Pibal, Melvin Pibal, David Pibal and John Pibal. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Houle, Richard Chavis, Robert Albon, Jr., Richard Pibal, Larry Pibal, Tom Pibal, Gerald Pibal, Allan Pibal, Ron Keegan, Rod Lane, Gary Lane, Rick Lane and Jeff Lash.

Visitations will be from 2-9 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2003, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton with a 7 p.m. rosary followed by a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service.

Irene A. Lane was born Nov. 17, 1920, to John and Anna (Sykora) Pibal at Tabor, S.D. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, and attended grade school in Tabor. Irene was married to Norman E. Lane June 29, 1942, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, S.D., and lived in Yankton the remaining years of her life.

Irene enjoyed traveling to many places around the world, including Czechoslovakia where her ancestors came from. She was an active member of the Sacred Heart Funeral Committee and a member of the Senior Citizens Center. She loved to go for long walks, enjoyed many hours of embroidering and was well known for making the best Czech Kolachies.

Irene is survived by three daughters: Dianne (Dan) Kuchta of Crofton, Neb.; Sharon (Vernon) Zavadil of Menominee, Neb.; and Donna (Harry) Swank of Sioux Falls, S.D.; seven grandchildren: Lisa (Robert) Albon of San Diego, Calif.; Richard (Kellie) Chavis of Hayward, Calif.; Michael (Cindy) Houle of Las Vegas, Nev.; Michelle (Jeff) Lash of North Lawrence, Ohio; Julie (Jason) Wetering of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Beth (Stanley) Hoefs, Jr. of Menominee, Neb.; and Brett Zavadil of South Yankton, Neb.; 9 great grandchildren: Alexandra, Ryan, Michael, Brittany, Pierce, Robert, Brian, Gracie and Breanna; and two brothers: Dan (Millie) Pibal of Yankton, S.D., and Eugene (Darlene) Pibal of Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her husband Norman on Jan. 28, 1973; parents; and two brothers: Charles and Adolph Pibal.

Memorials are directed to the Avera McKennan Hospice Program; 800 East 21st Street; Sioux Falls, SD 57105.

Esther Brue

WAKONDA -- Esther Brue, 90, Wakonda and formerly of Centerville, died Monday (July 28, 2003) at the Wakonda Heritage Manor.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Dalesburg Baptist Church, rural Beresford. Burial is in the Holland Cemetery following the luncheon.

Visitation is from 2-8 p.m. today (Thursday) with the family present from 7-8 p.m. at the Wass Funeral Home, Centerville.

She is survived by two sons: Albert Brue, Yankton, and Harlan (Brenda) Brue, Wakonda; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Dr. Bruce Milne

VERMILLION -- Dr. Bruce G. Milne, 76, Vermillion, died Thursday (July 31, 2003) at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital from complications of a bone disease.

A memorial service is at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Vermillion First United Methodist Church.

The Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, is handling arrangements.

He was born April 10, 1927, in Roundup, Mont., to William and Catherine Milne. After a childhood sporting accident, he developed osteomyelitis, which left him crippled in his right hip. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Montana, Missoula, Mont., and taught at Noxon, Mont., and Denton, Mont. He married Marlys Alt on May 28, 1950. The couple moved to Bigfork, Mont., where their three daughters were born. He became principal in Bigfork and went on to earn his master's degree. In 1962, he became superintendent of Valier Public Schools and in 1967 returned to the University of Montana for his Ed.D. In 1969, he accepted a position at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion. He became director of the Educational Research and Services Center, and was involved in the beginnings of gifted education programs. In 1983, he conceived of a camp experience for gifted young people in South Dakota. Since then, more than 2,000 kids grades 7-9 have attended the camp. In 1988, he and co-founder Dr. Carole Kasen opened the first South Dakota Ambassadors of Excellence camp for kids in grades 10-12 who had previously attended the camps. Dr. Milne led this advocacy group of performers on tours of Australia, Amsterdam, Great Britain, Germany and Taiwan to promote gifted education and South Dakota's young talent. He also served as mentor and advisor to many groups on the USD campus, especially the Taiwanese and Sudanese student organizations.

His achievements included the Distinguish Alumni Award from Roundup and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of South Dakota. He was a professor emeritus at USD. Gov. Mike Rounds declared July 30, 2003, as Bruce G. Milne Day. He began painting as a boy in the Billings Crippled Children's Hospital and later picked up sculpting and pen-and-ink drawings. He wrote and published a book of poems about his experiences at the hospital, titled "Angels, Cripples and Culprits," and was completing a novel describing life in the 1800s in Montana.

Survivors include his daughters: Kate Martens, Nancy (Tom) Bruch and Jennifer (Jon) Spradling; brothers: Albert Milne and Richard Milne; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother.

Memorials may be directed to the Oscar Howe Museum, USD School of Education, the University of Montana Foundation or the Sioux Valley Children's Hospital.

Stan Bartels

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Stan P. Bartels, 34, Lincoln, Neb., died Monday (Aug. 4, 2003).

Funeral mass is 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Lincoln. Burial is in the Lincoln Memorial Park, Lincoln.

Visitation is from 3-9 p.m. Thursday with a 7 p.m. rosary at the Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, Lincoln.

He was born Sept. 17, 1968, at Lincoln to Walter R. and Josephine (Borszich) Bartels. He graduated from Lincoln Northeast, Southeast Community College in Milford, Neb., and Peru State College.

He enjoyed motorcycles, cars, fishing and hunting. He also loved to do home improvement and spend time outside. He also loved his family.

He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, Lincoln; his parents, Walter R. and Jo Bartels, Lincoln; two brothers: Greg Bartels, Lincoln; and Michael Bartels, Lincoln; many nieces and nephews; his parents-in-law: Richard and Leanne Harding, Lincoln; one sister-in-law, Kim Kjeldgaard, Omaha, Neb.; his grandmothers-in-law: Hazel Gross, Wahoo, Neb.; and Mildred Harding, Clear Lake, Iowa; his great-aunt, Esther Lee, Yankton; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by three infant children, one infant sister and his grandparents.

Larry Roach

Larry Roach, age 66, of Yankton, S.D., passed away Thursday, July 24, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2003, at First United Methodist Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Dean Trapp officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Terry Carda, Gary Caba, Gary Boetel, Ed Colleran, Leon Melstad and Larry Hult.

Visitations will be 3-9 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2003, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Larry was born on April 8, 1937, near Turkey Ridge, S.D., to Lyle and Laura (Hankins) Roach. He attended schools in Hurley, S.D., and Vancouver, Wash., and received his BS degree from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, SD in 1959. He married Joanne Risseeuw on Aug. 21, 1959, near Lakeview, S.D. He taught and coached at Gayville for two years and then began employment with the SD Dept. of Social Services, serving in Pennington, Gregory, Charles Mix and Yankton Counties until his retirement in July of 2001. Larry was an avid sports fan. He was a little league baseball coach and also participated in baseball, basketball and softball for many years. He also liked to fish, play cards, travel and spend time with friends and family. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Yankton.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne of Yankton; sons: Michael (Debra) of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Bill (Annie Hoyos) of Omaha, Neb.; and Jeff (Jill) of Sioux Falls, S.D.; his mother, Laura of Yankton; one sister, Dona Saban Ulrich of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; grandchildren: Eric, Emma and Jenna Roach; and numerous nieces and nephews. Others who were considered family are Curt, Vicky, Corey, Ashley, Riley and Bradey Sorenson of Yankton; Monica and Manny Hoyos of Miami, Fla., and Monica's children, Ryan and Gabriella of Miami, Fla.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Lyle Roach, and a sister Ardel Disbrow Lien.
