Johnny Lee Steen died at home on Thursday Feb. 19, 2009, surrounded by family and friends. He was born March 8, 1951 in Belle Fourche and lived in Belle most of his life - with numerous adventures and side trips. He was 57. John was a unique character who loved life and lived it to its fullest. He seldom sat down. Anyone one who knew John will never forget him. He loved being outdoors - especially to fish, hunt and ski. He loved dogs, young people and trees; one of his favorite sayings was, "we touch the trees." John created a livelihood that allowed him to be outdoors as much as possible - commercial fishing in Alaska in the summer and working as a skilled certified arborist the rest of the year. He was a long-time member of the Audubon Society. Like Johnny Appleseed, Johnny planted and nurtured trees wherever he went. In addition to caring for his clients' trees, he modestly planted countless memorial trees in Alaska and around Belle Fourche including the golf course, soccer grounds and baseball complex; they will be enjoyed for years to come. Johnny also nurtured people. He was a person who changed peoples' lives by introducing them to the wonders of nature and through the model of his own life. He always lived very true to himself. He was a great friend. A graduate of Belle Fourche High School in 1969, John served in the U.S. Army, including a tour in Vietnam. He is survived by his cherished son, Sam, now living in Breckenridge, CO; his beloved life partner, Rita Jones and her daughters Heather and Jessica, Belle Fourche; his well-known Weimaraner, Rip; and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bruce Allen and his parents, Margeret and Louis.
