Lenord Bateman Yarger

RAPID CITY - Lenord Bateman Yarger, 94, Rapid City, died at the Rapid City Regional Hospital Tuesday, May 14, 2002.

He was born Sept. 5, 1907, in Eaton County, Michigan, to Clyde and Geno (Bateman) Yarger.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Yarger, Rapid City; a daughter, Victoria Kuster and her husband Donald, Burnsville, Minn.; a son, Terry Yarger and his wife Andrea, Rollins, Montana; four grandchildren, Dana Yarger, Jason Yarger and his wife Kimberly, Neil Kuster and Laura Kuster Goodall and her husband Nathan; and two great-grandchildren, Brienna and Quinn Yarger.

Private inurnment will be held at the Pine Lawn cemetery with a memorial service at a later date.

The Osheim-Catron Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Frank Everette Hannan

HOT SPRINGS — Frank Everette Hannan, 81, of Hot Springs, formerly of San Antonio, Texas, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Castle Manor in Hot Springs.

He was born January 13, 1921, in Hot Springs, S.D., to Frank I. and Bessie McCoy Hannan of rural Oral, S.D.

He grew up on the family farm and attended grade school at Morning Star, two years of high school at Oral and two at Hot Springs, graduating in 1938.

After graduating high school, he attended the National College of Business in Rapid City. He also spent 6 months in the CCC's at Camp Roubiaux.

While still in high school he joined the 109th Engineers and attended the Louisiana Maneuvers in 1941. He began his wartime service with the 34th Division of the National Guards, serving 17 months in Iceland, after which he was in the US for a few months. Transferring to the 689th Eng. Base Equipment Co., he spent 13 months in the South Pacific. He was discharged in August 1945. He received the European Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and American Defense Service Ribbon. After the war he joined the Army Reserves and retired in 1981.

He lived for many years in Chicago, where he met and married Jane Garver in September 1972. She died in 1997. He worked as an accountant for Fannie Mae, retiring in 1981. After retirement they moved to Brownsville, Texas, and later to San Antonio, where he lived until recently, when he moved to South Dakota.

He was a member of the Travis United Methodist Church, NARFE, AARP, VFW, American Legion, and Lions Club in San Antonio and the Adventurers Club in Chicago. He did volunteer work for his church, the VA, and for the Lions, and recently received an award for his long and dedicated service and contributions to the Lions Club. Everette was an avid traveler, touring the United States extensively and making several trips to Mexico, South and Central America, especially enjoying the ornate buildings and churches of those countries. He made a trip to the Holy Land and one to Iceland. Also, being a photographer, he made many albums of his trips.

He is survived by two brothers, John (Alice) Hannan, Stockton, Calif., and Vernon Max (Jean) Hannan, Chadron, Neb.; two sisters, Delma (Walter) Mehlhaff, Hot Springs, S.D., and Mary (Warren) Anderson, Buffalo Gap, S.D.; sisters-in-law Gwen Muesksch and Patricia Boris; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother and two sisters.

Memorial Services will be conducted by Reverend David Anderson Saturday, June 1, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Oral United Methodist Church, with a military burial at the Fairview cemetery.

Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City is in charge of the arrangements.

Gladys Cecelia Keene

STURGIS — Gladys Cecelia Keene, 94, Sturgis and formerly of Newell, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Sturgis Long Term Care Center.

Survivors include two daughters, Lois Ospeth, White Bear Lake, Minn., and Darlene Dunn-Jekot, Lakewood, Colo.; one son, Roy Keene, Alliance, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, R. Raymond Keene, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, and for one hour before services Wednesday, May 29, at Newell Independent Congregational Church.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Mel Dietz officiating.

Burial will follow at Hope cemetery in Newell.

Audrey Ann Norman

ROCKERVILLE — Mass of Christian Burial for Audrey Ann Norman, 73, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at St. Therese Catholic Church, Rapid City, S.D., with Rev. Brian Lane and Rev. Bryan Sorensen as celebrants. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, followed by a Rosary service at 7 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary, Rapid City, S.D. Interment will be held at a later date at Buffalo Gap cemetery, Buffalo Gap, S.D.

She was born December 23, 1928, in Norfolk, Neb., to Clarence I. and Rosemary (Staph) Anderson. She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1947.

She married Tom Norman on June 5, 1948, at Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Rapid City, S.D. They lived east of Buffalo Gap, S.D., until moving to Rapid City in 1981. They have resided in the Rockerville area for the past 8 years.

She was a member of St. Therese Church and a 4-H Leader.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Norman, Rockerville, S.D.; 4 daughters, Kathy (Jack) Coleman, Springfield, S.D., Judie (Don) Morehead, Alliance, Neb., Robin (Jimmy) Crisp, Mooresburg, Tenn., and Cokie (Eliot) Kammerer, Piedmont, S.D.; 12 grandchildren, Coi, Courtney and Kallie Morehead, Chad, Brandon and Lex Jagow, Riley, Kelli and Tessa Kammerer, and Heather, Boe and Shawn Coleman; 2 great-grandchildren, Kain and Kia Morehead; and 3 brothers, James (Jackie) Anderson, Rapid City, S.D., Bob Anderson, St. Louis, Mo., and Tom (Kathy) Anderson, Orange, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial has been established to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Viola May Hemenway

RAPID CITY — Viola May Hemenway, 93, Rapid City, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include three sons, Richard Hemenway, Stuart Hemenway, Rapid City, and Leslie Hemenway, Medical Lake, Wash.; two daughters, Ella May Stone, Garden Grove, Calif., and Gladys McCullars, Marshall, Texas; 22 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Sherman Hill, Rapid City.

Her husband, Earl Hemenway, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, at Liberty Baptist Tabernacle in Rapid City, with the Rev. Wayne Williams officiating.

Burial will follow at Scenic cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Liberty Baptist Tabernacle, 1515 Space Ave., Rapid City, SD 57701.

Charles Douglas Balander

SUNNY VALLEY, Ore. - Charles Douglas Balander died Tuesday, May 21st, 2002, at his home in Sunny Valley, Oregon. Doug was born in Deadwood, South Dakota, to Victor and Mary Balander, January 10th, 1935. He was married to Jacqueline Caraway for 47 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952, until his retirement in 1978. He worked for Boeing as an aeronautics and space engineer from 1978 until he retired in 1993. He was a board member on the Sunny Valley and Wolf Creek Community Response Team and on the board for tax appeals for Josephine County. In addition to his wife, he is survived by children Kimlyn and Gary Black of Sunny Valley, Oregon, Kelly and Adam Thiry of Auburn, Washington, Samuel and Pam Balander of Auburn, Washington, and Kristy Balander and Mac Toland of Kent, Washington. Six grandchildren, Miranda and Travis Black, Paul Thiry, and Samantha and Savannah Balander. He is also survived by his sister Peggy Bauer of Rapid City, SD, and brothers Victor Balander of Lead, SD, Don (Sandy) Balander of Poplar Grove, Ill. There will be a memorial at Driftwood Resort in Florence, Oregon on June 1st.

Mary I. Blair

TILFORD - Mary I. Blair, 82, Tilford, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include one son, Bruce Blair, Tilford; one daughter, Linda Hardenbrook, Tilford; one sister, Catherine Miller, Eagle Point, Ore.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Calvin Blair, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Howard Smith officiating.

Private family committal services will be at Bear Butte cemetery in Sturgis.

A memorial has been established to the Black Hills Stock Show Foundation Scholarship Fund and Sturgis First Presbyterian Church.

Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Lyle R. Miller

DEADWOOD - The Rev. Lyle R. Miller, 66, Alpine Acres, Deadwood, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include his wife, Dorthy Miller, Deadwood; three sons, Lyle Miller Jr., Andover, Minn., David Miller, Rapid City, and Mark Miller, Omaha, Neb.; one daughter, Shandra Housley, Lakewood, Wash.; five sisters, Florence Kish, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Beverly Holt, Moose Lake, Minn., Carol Swenson, Mesa, Ariz., Linda Stinson, Lancaster, Calif., and Darlys Kloss, Hitchcock; and seven grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

May L. Aaberg

RAPID CITY - May L. Aaberg, 90, Rapid City, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include one cousin, Carol Aaberg, Rapid City.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Lawrence He Crow

OGLALA - Lawrence He Crow, 68, Oglala, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, in Oglala.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Mendoza, Rapid City; one sister, Norma Lone Elk, Oglala; two brothers, Francis He Crow, Pine Ridge, and Abraham He Crow Sr., Oglala; many grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He served in the U.S. Army.

A one-night wake will begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at Makasan Presbyterian Church in Oglala.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, at the church, with the Rev. Asa Wilson and Mr. Clyde Red Shirt officiating. Mr. Richard Broken Nose will officiate for a Lakota prayer.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Helena 'Haidi' Morrison Cottier

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Helena "Haidi" Morrison Cottier, 97, Albuquerque, died Sept. 6, 2001, in Albuquerque.

Survivors include one daughter, Carmen Trujillo, Albuquerque; one brother, Frank Morrison, Rapid City; and two grandchildren.

Her husband, Edward "Shorty" Cottier, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, at St. Isaac Jogues Church in Rapid City.

Burial will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.

Leon Dillon

UPTON, Wyo. - Leon Dillon, 83, Upton, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gillette.

Survivors include his wife, Lee Dillon, Upton; one son, Morece Dillon, Upton; two stepdaughters, Beth Rinkin, Gillette, and Carolyn Hendricks, Eureka, Kan.; one brother, Rex Dillon, Sundance; one sister, Pauline Kanode, Sundance; two granddaughters; three stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler-Roberts Funeral Chapel of Sundance.
