Margaret Leopold Barker

BURLINGTON, Iowa - Margaret Ann Leopold Barker passed peacefully in her sleep Sunday, May 19, 2002.

She was born April 22, 1922 to Frederic and Edith L. Leopold in Burlington, IA.

She was preceded in death by both parents and her sister Edith Leopold.

Marm truly celebrated life.

She enjoyed canoeing, monitoring her dear Prothonotary Warblers, walking in the woods, fly fishing, cross-country skiing until arthritis made it impossible to do so.

Her son Jim and grandson Woodson continued to take her in the canoe, including an afternoon trip two weeks ago at the Crystal Lake Club where Marm grew up with her family, took her own children, and maintained a personal membership for the past 55 years.

She loved to travel on her own and for many years Marm and her sister Edith would take yearly trips to exotic places including the South Sea Islands, the Nile, Madagascar, Hawaii, Belize, Easter Island, and the Amazon.

She enjoyed a trip to Florida in March to visit a dear friend and her husband.

She was in regular touch with her son Jim Spring, a well-known Burlington artist, who did many tasks for her in her Burlington home, and with his family.

She was planning her yearly June trip to visit her daughter Nancy, an artist in jewelry, in Hot Springs, S.D., where the two of them owned land and enjoyed regular visits. Marm enjoyed her many trips to the southern Black Hills to visit Nancy, and over the past nine years made many friends there.

She turned 80 last month in Lyon and Viens, France, during a visit with son Stephen and his wife Michelle. A chorus of "Happy Birthday" wishes, though in French, greeted her at the end of a celebratory meal there.

Her three children and their families survive her:

Drs. Stephen and Michelle Barker, Irvine, California, and Viens, France.

Grandchildren Richard Hawthorne (wife Clara and son Nico), Jonathan and Jeremy Barker, Irvine, CA.

Jim and Jane Spring, Burlington, IA. Willow and Annie Spring (great-grandchildren Willow Moon and Zen, Cincinnati, OH). Woodson Spring, Iowa City; Frederica Spring, Burlington.

Nancy A. Barker, Hot Springs, SD.

Marm was very proud, and was always supportive, of her family and their various accomplishments.

She enjoyed her frequent contacts with family and with her many friends, playing bridge with her bridge group of 23 years, relaxing drives on the back roads, gardening, and the many organizations she was a member of. Despite her arthritis, she had only recently and very reluctantly given up her annual search for Morel mushrooms in the Burlington area.

All who knew her, her joyfulness, laughter, compassion, generosity, patience, and dignity will dearly miss her.

A Memorial gathering to celebrate Marm's life will be held Friday, May 31, at 3:00 p.m. at the Crystal Lake Club, Gulfport, Illinois, which had played such an important part in her life.

Memorials and gifts in her honor may be made to the Art Guild of Burlington Inc.
