William 'Bill' C. Kappenman

SIOUX FALLS - William "Bill" C. Kappenman, 58, died Wednesday, May 22nd, of injuries received in an auto accident. Bill was born August 27, 1943, in Hudson, SD, to Mary Teresa (Nieles) and Leo Kappenman. He graduated from O'Gorman High School in 1962. He married Lois Linder in Watertown, S.D., January 29, 1971. He graduated from Sioux Falls College in 1976 and received his Master's Degree in 1989 from South Dakota State University. Bill worked as a teacher and coach for 25 years. At the time of his death he was teaching in the Crow Creek School System.

Bill was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid NASCAR racing fan. He is survived by his wife Lois; 1 daughter, Tobi Baker and her husband Michael of Sioux Falls; 3 sons, Sean of Sioux Falls, Cuyler and fiancee Melissa of Menomonic, WI; Morgan of Sioux Falls and a special son, Daniel Casper of Minneapolis, MN; 3 grandchildren, Reba, Travis and Carson Lee. He is also survived by 1 sister, Mary Ann Misar and her husband Robert of Sioux Falls, and countless friends.

Mass of the Resurrection will be Wednesday 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral. Visitation began Tuesday 4 p.m. with a Scripture Vigil at 8 p.m. at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home.

Interment will be at Riverview cemetery in Centerville, SD. The family requests that memorials be given to the choice of the donor in memory of Bill.

Lauren Marie Stewart

PINE RIDGE - Lauren Marie Stewart, 5, Pine Ridge, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, in Omaha, Neb.

Survivors include her parents, Loren Waters and Wendi Buckman, Pine Ridge; five sisters, Corey Stewart, Stacey Stewart and Callie Stewart, all of Oglala, and Carley Stewart and Laura Waters, both of Pine Ridge; one brother, Josh Stewart, Oglala; her maternal grandparents, Ivis Black Elk and Larry Buckman, both of Pine Ridge; and her paternal grandfather, Harold Waters, Pine Ridge.

A two-night wake will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 12, at Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Billy Mills Hall, with the Rev. Ben Tyon officiating.

Burial will be at Holy Cross Episcopal Church cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Ida Huether

RAPID CITY - Ida Huether, 88, Rapid City and formerly of Wall, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Mountain View Health Care Facility in Rapid City.

Survivors include two sons, Pete Huether, Rapid City, and Ewald Huether, Douglas, Wyo.

Arrangements are pending with Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall.

Elizabeth Peck

WESSINGTON SPRINGS - Elizabeth Peck, 90, of Wessington Springs, died Wednesday morning at the Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center in Wessington Springs. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Free Methodist Church in Wessington Springs, with Rev. Don Grubb officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the Basham Funeral Home in Wessington Springs Friday from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the service. The family will be present Friday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elizabeth L. Dutton was born on Oct. 2, 1911, at Mystic, Iowa, to John and Myrtle (Gibson) Dutton. At the age of 3 months she was taken into the home of an aunt and uncle and raised as their own.

At an early age she joined the Methodist Church at Mystic, Iowa, and was baptized in April 1927.

She received her schooling at Mystic, Iowa, and graduated from high school in 1930. Following graduation she entered nurse's training at Milwaukee County General Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis., graduating in 1933. Following graduation she did private duty nursing in various country homes in Iowa before moving to Rapid City, S.D., where she did nursing until moving to Wessington Springs in 1945. She worked at the old hospital and worked for four years at the new Weskota Memorial Medical Center for a total of 30 years in the Springs area and for 50 years totally.

On May 27, 1935, she was united in marriage to James Owen Peck at Rapid City, S.D.

She attended the Free Methodist Church and was a former member of the Chery Club, and was a member of Who's Who in the Midwest.

She is survived by three children, George Peck and his wife Twila of Omaha, Neb., Nancy Peterson and her husband Elmer of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Phyllis Higgins of Rapid City, S.D.; 10 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; one brother, Irwin Dutton of Grand Junction, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1980; a granddaughter, Mary Ellen Higgins; two sisters; and a son-in-law, Michael Higgins, in 1998.

Yvonne J. Halverson

RAPID CITY - Yvonne J. Halverson, 88, Rapid City, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include one daughter, Sheri Jo Michael, Rapid City; two sons, Neal Halverson, Badger, Iowa, and Gregory Halverson, Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, George Michotte, Billings, Mont.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Lillian Black Bird

RAPID CITY - Lillian Black Bird, 86, Rapid City, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at a Rapid City nursing home.

Survivors include three daughters, Christina Black, Rapid City, Clara Cross, Dickinson, N.D., and Marilyn Brock, Pocatello, Idaho; one son, Thurman Black Bird, Rapid City; 18 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today and for one hour before services Saturday, May 11, at Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Custer cemetery.

Francis P. O'Dea

BELLE FOURCHE - Francis P. O'Dea, 76, Belle Fourche, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include his wife, Emma O'Dea, Belle Fourche; three sons, Bill O'Dea and Roger O'Dea, both of Belle Fourche, and David O'Dea, North Platte, Neb.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Antone O'Dea, Billings, Mont., John O'Dea, Santa Barbara, Calif., and Paul O'Dea, Miles City, Mont.

Arrangements are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.

Craig L. Mowrer

BLACK HAWK - Craig L. Mowrer, 32, Black Hawk, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Kellie Mowrer, Black Hawk; his son, Brandon, Black Hawk; his parents, Kenneth and Amy Mowrer, Rapid City; a brother, Mark Mowrer and his wife Brenda, New Philadelphia, Ohio; a sister, Kendra Greene, Rapid City; a nephew, Kenneth Greene, three nieces, Jordan Greene, Hannah Halverson and Cherolyn Chandler, all of Rapid City; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kevin and Joann Stock, Rapid City; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Kristi Halverson, Rapid City; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Benjamin and Erin Chandler, Rapid City; his grandmother, Gladys Schimnowski, Redfield, S.D.; and many other close family and friends.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Faith Lutheran Church, with Rev. Bruce Baum officiating.

Interment will be at the Mountain View cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Craig's name at the Black Hills Federal Credit Union for his son's education.

Thomas Zenor

RAPID CITY - Thomas Sylvester Zenor, 86, of Rapid City, died Wednesday, May 8, at Custer Community Hospital in Custer.

He was born September 19, 1915, in Rapid City to James and Anna Zenor.

He married Lorene Freeman in March 1939. In 1942 he went to work at the air base then under construction, later named Ellsworth Air Force Base. He worked there as an electrician and electrical foreman until his retirement in 1965. Subsequently he spent a number of years traveling around South Dakota helping to establish alcohol rehabilitation and referral services for the state.

He was an active member of the Alano Club in Rapid City for over 50 years. He gave freely his time and concern for many people struggling with alcohol and drugs.

Survivors include two brothers, William Zenor of Rapid City and Robert Zenor of Estacada, Oregon; two sisters, Armeta Jacoby of Estacada and Viola Singer of Mesa, Arizona; five sons, Larry and Dan of Rapid City, James of Placerville, California, Kenneth of San Clemente, California, and Ronald of Custer; 8 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pine Lawn cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Rapid City Alano Club.

Charles H. Merrill III

SCENIC - Charles H. Merrill III, 48, Scenic, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, as the result of an automobile accident.

Survivors include one son, Charles Merrill IV, Rapid City; two daughters, Melissa Merrill, Scenic, and Heather Merrill, Rapid City; three brothers, Mike Merrill, Chicago, Shawn Merrill, Scenic, and Jessie Merrill, Pine Ridge; three sisters, Patricia Olic, Scenic, and Desiree Merrill and Suzette Brown, both of Rapid City; his mother, Greta Brown, Rapid City; his father and stepmother, Charles II and Doris Merrill, Pine Ridge; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Fern Johnson Brooks

ARLINGTON, Texas - Fern Johnson Brooks, 89, Arlington and formerly of Philip, S.D., died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Townhall Estates in Arlington.

Survivors include one son, Perry, Arlington; two daughters, Joy Timberlake, Gainesville, Va., and Jacky Swanson, Timonium, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and three nieces, Corinne Stevens, Janis Farrell and Twyla Luedtke, all of Rapid City.

Isaac Habib

NEW YORK - Isaac Habib, 84, New York, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Belle Fourche, S.D., Long Term Health Care Center.

Survivors include one daughter, Rita Habib, New York; Steven Habib, Rapid City; one sister, Celia Hassan, Hollywood, Fla.; and one grandson.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Robert Gene Main

KEYSTONE - Robert Gene Main, 64, Keystone, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Custer Community Hospital.

Robert was born in La Cygne, Kan., on March 3, 1938. As a young boy he moved to Cody, Wyo., to work the family ranch. He lived there until age 18.

In August 1957, he married Elaine Parker and moved to Evanston, Wyo., with his brother's family. Together they owned and operated a house and sign painting company there. In 1960, he and Elaine left Evanston for Sheridan, Wyo. Bob began working for the Salt Creek Trucking Company. He continued there until 1962. He then took a turn driving taxi for his sister and brother-in-law. He was hired by the Sheridan Flour Mill in 1963. He continued working there until his eventual employment by Burlington Northern Railroad in 1965. He eventually worked his way to the Roadmaster position. He remained employed with Burlington Northern until his retirement in 1994. From there, he and his wife moved to Keystone, S.D., where they purchased the Rushmore Bar in 1995. They expanded into the Rushmore Bar and Supper Club, which continues today.

He served as the president of the Keystone Chamber of Commerce for two years, and was a member of the Shriners Eastern Star Charter.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Main of Keystone, S.D.; two sons, Robert (Bob) Jr. of Gillette, Wyo., and Dale Main of Keystone, S.D.; one daughter, Dona Main of Keystone, S.D.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 13, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary, with Reverend Barb Gammeter officiating.

Burial will follow at Mountain View cemetery in Keystone.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Beatrice Mary Lewis Crandall

RAPID CITY - Beatrice Mary Lewis Crandall, 83, Rapid City, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at a Rapid City nursing home.

Survivors include her husband, Chester A. Crandall, Rapid City; one daughter, Connie Higgins, Colorado Springs, Colo.; one stepdaughter, Verla Jung, Jamestown, N.D.; one stepson, Elby Crandall, Rapid City; one brother, Bill Cook, Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Carolyn Hoskins, Portland, Ore., and Rosalie Hartman, Sacramento, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 20, at First Assembly of God Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Richard Tufts officiating.

Burial will be at Pine Lawn cemetery in Rapid City.

A memorial has been established for March of Dimes Crippled Children's Fund.
