Leo A. Siers

OGLALA - Leo A. Siers, 70, Oglala, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, in San Francisco.

Survivors include two sisters, Fran Karr and Anne Sherman, both of Rapid City, and three brothers, John Siers, Rapid City, William Siers, San Francisco, and Al Dreamer Sr., Oglala.

A one-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. today at Brother Rene Catholic Hall in Oglala.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 16, at Brother Rene Hall, with Brother Clarence Rowland, Sister Julie Brochamp and the Rev. Asa Wilson officiating.

Burial will be at Makasan Presbyterian cemetery in Oglala.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Berry Howie

BOULDER, Colo. - Phyllis Berry Howie of Boulder, Colorado, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002. She was 84.

The daughter of Cleve and Jessie Berry, she was born Oct. 18, 1917, in Winner, S.D.

Phyllis graduated from White River High School at the age of 16. She graduated from Yankton College in 1938, and earned a master's degree from Chapman University, Orange, California, in 1970. She taught high school in both Kadoka and Custer, S.D., taught Morse code to the Army Air Force crews in Sioux Falls during World War II, and taught English at Northglenn High School in Colorado. She worked as administrator of the English Second Language tutoring program at Front Range Community College at Denver, Colorado, and moved to Boulder in 1986.

Phyllis was married to Robert George Howie in 1942. A Lt. Colonel in the Marine Air Force, Howie died in 1980.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Howie Jr., San Mateo, California, and Cleveland Howie of Holt, Michigan; a daughter, Jan Howie Northrup, Larchmont, New York; three sisters, Marian Edwards, Aberdeen, Betty Tessar, Rapid City, and Jan Rasmussen, White River; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services for Phyllis Howie were held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Boulder, with burial at Fort Logan National cemetery, Denver.

Eveline Millie Stine Gilbery

LAKE PRESTON - Eveline Millie Stine Gilbery, 91, Lake Preston, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Beverly Health Care Center in Lake Norden.

Survivors include three sons, Charles Gilbery, Mission Hill, Kenneth Gilbery, Balaton, Minn., and David Gilbery, Lead; two daughters, Shirley Flemming, Florence, and Jean Melquest, Osage, Minn.; one brother, Lester Stine, Lindale, Texas; one sister, Esther Lake, Fargo, N.D.; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Fred Charles Gilbery, preceded her in death.

Visitation and a prayer service were held Tuesday, May 14, at United Church of Christ in Lake Preston.

Visitation will continue before services, which will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the church, with the Rev. Jerry Stolp officiating.

Burial will be at Lake Preston City cemetery.

Donald M. Wahlfeldt

DENVER - Donald M. Wahlfeldt, 69, Denver and formerly of Newell, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian; two daughters, Patty and Beverly; one son, Rory; two brothers, Glen and Alvin, both of Newell, S.D.; and three sisters, Leona Eckles, Lincoln, Neb., Esther Phillipsen, Sturgis, S.D., and Ruth McDermott, Rapid City.

The body will be cremated.

Mary Elizabeth Hildebrand

STURGIS - Mary Elizabeth Hildebrand, 104, Sturgis, died Monday, May 13, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice Feany, Sturgis; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Dave Hildebrand, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and for one hour before services Thursday, May 16, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Bob Waite officiating.

Burial will follow at Bear Butte cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Meade County Senior Citizens Center and Grace Lutheran Church.

Frank B Williams

RAPID CITY - Frank B Williams, 87, Rapid City, died Monday, May 13, 2002, at a Rapid City nursing home.

He was born Sept. 10, 1914, in the rural Sorum, S.D., area, the son of Noble J. and Mary (Hoffman) Williams. Frank graduated from Spearfish High School and attended Spearfish Normal, where he played football. He also attended S.D. State College at Brookings. Frank served in the U.S. Army from March of 1944 until May of 1946 during World War II. He married Irene Oster on June 15, 1938, at Sturgis, S.D. Following military service, the family moved to Rapid City. He was the manager of Reptile Gardens for a time and was later employed by Robbins and Stearns Lumber Co. He then owned and operated a Construction Co. prior to establishing B Frank Repair on the corner of 5th and St. Patrick St.

Survivors include a son, Douglas B Williams, and four daughters Jo Ponder, Bonnie Williams, Linda Williams and Nancy Heltsley, all of Rapid City; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Rev. Dan Houston officiating.

Interment will be at the Black Hills National cemetery, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273.

Hazel Ritchie

LEAD - Mass of Christian Burial for Hazel Ritchie, 93, of Lead will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead, with Fr. William Zandri officiating. Christian Wake and rosary service will be at 10:00 AM at St. Pats prior to the Mass. Burial will be in the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Hazel S. Ritchie, 93, died Saturday May 18, 2002 at her home in Lead, SD.

Hazel Keffeler was born February 10, l909 to rural Sturgis pioneers, Joseph and Viola Keffeler. She was one of eight children born into the family and spent her early years on the family homestead. She also attended schools in rural Meade County.

On July 20, 1932, Hazel was united in marriage to Walter Ritchie in New York City. They returned to the Black Hills and settled in Lead, where her husband worked at Homestake Mining Company. The couple had three children, Dolores Ritchie, Elaine Emery and Barbara Kriz.

Hazel was a past member of the Lead Women's Club, the Lead Senior Citizens Center and St Patrick's Altar Society, but her primary focus in life was her family. Her later years have been spent doting on her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters Elaine and her husband, Jim Emery of Custer; Barbara Kriz of Denver; grandsons Mike Kriz and his wife Marilyn of Denver, Colorado; John Kriz and his wife Katie of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; David Emery and his wife, Deanna, of Rapid City, SD; her special great-grandchildren, Steven and Melissa Kriz, Rory and Maggie Kriz, and Brandon and Ryan Emery; her sisters, Florence Bedsaul of Sturgis and Clara McNabb of Des Moines, Iowa, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 1985; her daughter, Dolores in 2000.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or the Arthritis Foundation.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.

June Jarvi

BELLE FOURCHE - June Jarvi, 81, Belle Fourche, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Survivors include one daughter, Lisa Noziska, Belle Fourche; one son, Jay Jarvi, Belle Fourche; one sister,

Sue Paulson, Minneapolis; one brother, Bud Anderson, Rapid City; and four granddaughters.

Her husband, Arvo Jarvi, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at Kline Frost Chapel in Belle Fourche and for one hour before services at the church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, at United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Steve Olson officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Slope cemetery.

Frank Everette Hannan

HOT SPRINGS - Frank Everette Hannan, 81, Hot Springs and formerly of San Antonio, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Anderson, Buffalo Gap, and Delma Mehlhaff, Hot Springs; and two brothers, Vernon Hannan, Chadron, Neb., and John Hannan, Stockton, Calif.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Kay Cyrilla Fish

STURGIS - Kay Cyrilla Fish, 43, Sturgis, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Shane Fish, Sturgis; one son, Josh Remington, Sturgis; two daughters, Jessica Remington, Sturgis, and Jamie Remington, Upton, Wyo.; her parents, Art and Virginia Grenstiner, Boulder Canyon; three brothers, Anthony Grenstiner and Mark Grenstiner, both of Boulder Canyon, and Eric Grenstiner, Newell; and one sister, Marcella Westendorf, Deadwood.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Gary Oreshoski officiating.

Burial will follow at St. Aloysius cemetery in Sturgis.

A memorial has been established.

P. Jean Whitney

IONA - Phyllis Jean Whitney, 56, rural Iona, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Robert "Bob" Whitney, rural Iona; three sons, Delbert Whitney and Rodney Whitney, both of Iona, and Clayten Whitney, Gregory; one sister, Faye Endres, Mesa, Ariz.; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening, May 21, with an 8 p.m. prayer service at Kotrba Funeral Home in Gregory.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at United Methodist Church in Gregory.

Burial will be at Iona cemetery.

Maurice Eugene Beckman

LEAD - Maurice Eugene Beckman, 72, Lead, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Delores Beckman, Lead; one daughter, Marcia Nelsen, Mitchell; one son, John Beckman, Boulder Canyon; and three stepgrandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead, with the Rev. Greg Kroger officiating.

Burial with military honors will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established.
