Harry F. Byrd

FLANDREAU - Harry F. Byrd, 89, Flandreau, died Monday, June 10, 2002, in Pine Ridge.

Survivors include his guardian, Lucille Mesteth, Porcupine; one sister, Evelyn Galvin, Flandreau; and one brother, Sidney Byrd, Santa Fe, N.M.

A two-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. today at Porcupine Day School.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at the school, with the Rev. Simon Looking Elk officiating. Leonard Crow Dog will officiate at traditional services.

Burial will be at Porcupine Presbyterian cemetery.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Charles J. Adams

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Brig. Gen. Charles J. Adams, 81, Santa Maria and formerly of Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Lee Polk Adams, Santa Maria; one daughter, Mary Keen Robinson, Miami; and one son, Charles Adams Jr., Bellevue, Neb.

He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1973 and was commander of the 44th Missile Wing and the 821st Strategic Aerospace Division at Ellsworth.

Memorial services were Tuesday, June 4, in Santa Maria.

James Robert McClain

RAPID CITY - James Robert McClain, 58, of Rapid City died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at his home after a courageous yearlong struggle with cancer.

James was born February 10, 1944 in Philipsburg, PA to Edward and Eunice (Sleigh) McClain. He was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base from 1962-1966. He then joined the Air Force Reserves and retired on March 16, 2001. He was employed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in the civil engineer squadron from 1974 until the present.

James was active as a coach and referee in the Rapid City Youth Soccer and the Rushmore Soccer Club from 1976 until the present. He received his bachelor's degree in History and Sociology from Black Hills State University in 2000. He was an avid outdoorsman especially hunting, fishing and spending time at his property in Rochford.

He is survived by his wife Marsha McClain of Rapid City, his daughter Shannon Day and her husband Julius of Rapid City, his son Clayton McClain and his wife Jennifer of Rapid City, two grandchildren Jameson McClain and Taylen Day, two stepsons, Jeffery Barnes of Tucson AZ, Brandon Barnes of Rapid City, his biological parents, Jim and Jean McCamley of Philipsburg PA, four sisters, Muriel Doran of Rocklin CA, Judy Williams of Philipsburg PA, Gerri Combe of Erie PA, and Marianne Rothwell of Harrington Park NJ.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 24, 2002 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Douglas Free officiating.

Memorials are to the Rapid City Youth Soccer and the Rushmore Soccer Club.

Arrangements are with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Dolores M. Tyon-Sitting Holy

PINE RIDGE - Dolores M. Tyon-Sitting Holy, 61, Pine Ridge, died Friday, June 21, 2002, in Pine Ridge.

Survivors include two sons, Steve Tyon and Clifton Clifford, both of Pine Ridge; one brother, Floyd Tyon, Kyle; and numerous grandchildren.

One-night wake begins at 3 p.m. Monday, June 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, at the church, with the Rev. Bill Pauly officiating. Burial will be at Holy Rosary cemetery.

Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd L. Rathman

STURGIS - Floyd L. Rathman, 84, Sturgis, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sturgis.

Survivors include one daughter, Lois Rathman, Sturgis.

Arrangements are pending with Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis.

William Fred Kallenberger

STURGIS - William Fred Kallenberger, 85, Sturgis, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at Sturgis Community Health Care Center.

Survivors include his wife, Freida, Sturgis; one son, Marvin Kallenberger, Whitewood; four daughters, Frances Wood and Sandra Engel, both of Sturgis, Shirley Hall, Yakima, Wash., and Bernice Huff, Titan, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, June 24, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, and one hour before services at the church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at United Methodist Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Gordon Higgins officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte cemetery.

A memorial has been established to American Diabetes Association.

Marissa Renee Young

RAPID CITY - Marissa Renee Young, 5 weeks, Rapid City, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her parents, Clarence and Helen Young, Rapid City; three sisters, Krystal Young, Kayla Young and Sharon Young, all of Rapid City; her paternal grandfather, Clarence Young, Missouri; her paternal stepgrandfather, Ron Honomichl, Black Hawk; and her maternal grandparents, Frank and Christine Schikowsi, Altoona, Pa.

Rite of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 24, at Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City, with the Rev. Tim Castor officiating.

Burial will be at Mount Calvary cemetery in Rapid City.

Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

John Harland 'Swede' Swenson

SUNDANCE, Wyo. - John Harland "Swede" Swenson, 89, Sundance, died June 21, 2002, at Crook County Memorial Hospital in Sundance.

Survivors include two sons, John Swenson, Sundance, and Edward Swenson, Oak Ridge, N.C.

Arrangements are pending with Fidler-Roberts Funeral Chapel in Sundance.

Leslie E. 'Les' Renner

RAPID CITY - Leslie E. "Les" Renner, 87, Rapid City and formerly of Wall, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Westhills Village in Rapid City.

Survivors include one son, Rodney Renner, Wall; one brother, Earle Renner, Carterville, Ill.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.

Elwood Leon Redick

RAPID CITY - Elwood Leon Redick, much-beloved husband, father, grandfather, business associate and friend, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at his home in Rapid City. He was born September 24, 1925, to Leon R. and Florence (Becker) Redick in Canning, SD. The family moved to Pierre, then Fort Pierre, SD. Elwood graduated from Fort Pierre High School in 1943. Like his father before him, Elwood Redick was an independent livestock dealer, known by his friends and business associates as a true "gentleman cattle buyer." He will be remembered for his generosity, his sense of humor, and his love for his family.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rosemary Harris Redick; their three children - Mark Leon Redick of Rapid City, Paula Redick Saunders of Syracuse, NY, and Sara Jayne Holcombe of Shakopee, MN; sons-in-law George Saunders and John Tyler Holcombe; seven grandchildren - Caitlin and Alena Saunders, J.T., Mark and Maggie Holcombe, and Alyssa and Nicholas Redick; and two sisters, Patricia Cunningham of Washington, DC. and Geraldine Renn of Federal Way, WA.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m until 7 p.m. Monday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Services will be held at the New Life Wesleyan Church 5125 Memorial Road, Rapid City, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2002 with Rev. Tom Boland officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273, will be at the Black Hills National cemetery following services.

A memorial has been established for the Hospice of the Hills.

Joyce Cline Cummings

RAPID CITY - Joyce Cline Cummings, 52, Rapid City, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at her home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Dec. 16, 1949, at Naper, Nebraska, the daughter of Harney and Opal (Miesner) Cline. She later moved to Martin where she lived until her marriage. Joyce married Arnold E. Cummings on July 19, 1969, in Rapid City. She lost her first two children in the flood of 1972. She was later blessed with a son, David and a daughter, Heather. Joyce and Arnie were divorced in 1996.

Joyce was a longtime employee of the Rapid City Medical Center. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and loyal friend.

Survivors include her fiance, Alan Brown, Rapid City, a son, David Cummings, Rapid City, a daughter, Heather Keller, Rapid City, and five grandchildren; two brothers Adriane Cline, Frankfurt, Germany, and Dennis Cline, Naper, Nebraska, four sisters, Jean Cummings and Becky Cummings, Martin, S.D., Crystal Cope, Mesa, Ariz, and Carole Wegener, Columbus, Mississippi.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. today at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church with Rev. Pat McCorkell SJ as the Celebrant. Interment will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park. A memorial has been established.

Dr. James C. 'Jim' Bastian

EDGEMONT - Dr. James C. "Jim" Bastian, 78, of Edgemont, SD, died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at the Castle Manor Nursing home in Hot Springs, SD.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home (6800 S. 14th St.) in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Burial will follow at Lincoln Memorial Park.

A Memorial Service Celebrating Jim's life will be 2:00 p.m. July 7, 2002 at the St. James Parish Hall in Edgemont, SD.

Jim was born August 24, 1923 in Chugwater, Wyoming to Arthur Richard and Eva Fern (Rodgers) Bastian. In 1944, Jim enlisted in the United States Army serving during World War II in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1946. On June 17, 1962, Jim married Darlene Gausman in Lincoln, Nebraska. He received his veterinary degree from Fort Collins, Colorado. He was a Veterinarian for Fall River County, Custer County and the surrounding areas for 46 years.

Jim and his wife Darlene sang for many funerals in Edgemont. He served on the Edgemont School Board, was a life member of the Chamber of Commerce, a life member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, he belonged to the Farm Bureau and was a member of the United Church of Edgemont.

Grateful to have shared in his life are his wife Darlene (Gausman) Bastian of Edgemont; 2 sons: James Jr. and his wife Jan of Miles City, MT; Tracy and his wife Valerie Bastian of Mount Hope, KS; 2 daughters: Cheryl (Mrs. Larry) Madsen of Mount Hood, OR; Terry (Mrs. Roger) Gullickson of New Orleans LA; 2 grandchildren: Chad and Shelby Madsen of Mount Hood, OR; 2 sisters: Mary (Mrs. Chet) Gausman of Custer, SD, Metha Blenkarn of Helena, MT.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Eva Fern (Rodgers) Bastian.

A memorial fund has been established in Jim's memory to benefit the United Church of Edgemont or the Edgemont Ambulance Service.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home of Lincoln, NE and McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Hot Springs, SD.

Frankee L. Thunder Horse

WOUNDED KNEE - Frankee L. Thunder Horse, 7, Wounded Knee, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Rapid City.

Survivors include his parents, Amelia White Dress and Steve Bear Eagle, both of Wounded Knee, two brothers, Wanbli Bear Eagle, Wounded Knee, and Gilbert Thunder Horse, Wanblee; three sisters, Carolyn Bear Eagle and Tricia Bear Eagle, both of Wounded Knee, and Shirley Thunder Horse, Wanblee; and paternal grandfather, Paul Thunder Horse, Wounded Knee.

Second-night wake will be today at Sacred Heart Catholic Hall in Wounded Knee. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday, June 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Hall, with the Rev. Jim Ryan officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery.

Emil Lloyd Anderson

RAPID CITY - Emil Lloyd Anderson, 76, Rapid City, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Anderson, Rapid City; two daughters, Penny Saylor, Bismarck, N.D., and Becky Anderson, Aberdeen; one son, Tim Anderson, Hot Springs; one sister, Lorraine Hagen, Glenham; and three grandsons.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.
