Sarah 'Alice' Biermann

PHILIP - Sarah "Alice" Biermann, 80, Philip and formerly of Midland, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include one son, Bob, Midland; one daughter, Marilyn Uhrig, Philip; 12 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Rognstad and Deloris Olson, both of Madison, and Dorothy DeAngelo, Sargents, Colo.; and one brother, Edward Paul, Wiggins, Colo.

Two husbands, Thomas Enger and Edwin Biermann, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and for one hour before services Thursday, June 27, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Midland.

Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Jill Jackson officiating.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. CDT at Highmore City cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Cvetko Djenich

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Cvetko Djenich, 89, Newcastle, Wyo., died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Weston Manor Nursing Home in Newcastle.

Survivors include one daughter, Vida Dahl, Newcastle; one brother; one sister; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

His wife, Mileva Stunkovich Djenich, preceded him in death.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at Worden Chapel in Newcastle.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 28, at Worden Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Dutcher officiating.

Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery in Newcastle.

Charles Vernon Clifford Jr.

PINE RIDGE - Charles Vernon Clifford Jr., infant son of Charles Clifford Sr. and Constance Winters-Clifford of Pine Ridge, was born and died Sunday, June 23, 2002, in Bellevue, Neb.

Survivors include his parents; one brother, Charles Louis Clifford, Pine Ridge; three sisters, Anne Clifford, Edith Clifford and Sheere Clifford, all of Pine Ridge; his paternal grandparents, Melvin Clifford Sr., Sioux City, S.D., and Thelma Red Feather, Pine Ridge; and his maternal grandfather, Louis Winters Sr., Pine Ridge.

A one-night wake will begin at 3 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Hall in Pine Ridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 27, at the Catholic Hall, with the Rev. Steve Pugliese officiating.

Burial will be at Holy Rosary Mission Catholic cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Dale (Sternhagen) Frost

Deacon Harold Joseph Frost

SILVERDALE, Wash. - Virginia (Lead HS class of '46) was born in Newell, South Dakota on August 15, 1928, and passed away in Silverdale, Wash. on June 10, 2002. Harold (LHS class of '44) was born in Omaha, Nebraska on January 21, 1926 and passed away in Bremerton, Wash. on June 12, 2002. Virginia and Harold were married August 30, 1947, in Lead. Together they are survived by their children: Stephen J. (Tommie) Frost, Eric G. (Pam) Frost, Karl A. Frost, Paul D. (Ellen) Frost, Joseph G. (Joyce) Frost, Kenneth A. (Rita) Frost, David F. (Debbie) Frost, Carolyn F. (Maher) Al-Khoury, and Amy M. Frost. They had 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Virginia is also survived by her sister, Thelma Wolcott, and preceded in death by 2 grandchildren and 1 sister. Harold is also survived by 11 brothers and sisters, and was preceded in death by 1 brother. Under the direction of Beck's Funeral Home, Edmonds, (425) 771-1234. Ralph R. Haar

PARKMAN, Wyo. - Ralph R. Haar, 63, Parkman, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Haar, Parkman; one daughter, Shelly Brown, Merrill, Iowa; two sons, Shannon Haar and Roland Haar, both of Parkman; four grandchildren; his mother, Leone Haar, Freeman, S.D.; one sister, June Roth, Bridgewater, S.D.; and one brother, Dale Haar, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home in Sheridan, Wyo.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 27, at Cornerstone Church in Sheridan, with the Rev. Tony Forman, the Rev. Kenneth Pretty On Top and the Rev. Donald Brendtro officiating.

Burial will be at Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Ralph Haar Memorial Fund in care of Sue Wieser, Citco Federal Credit Union, 29 N. Connor St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Harold E. Lilly Jr.

BOX ELDER - Harold E. Lilly Jr., 40, Box Elder, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Dawn Lilly, Box Elder; one son, David Lilly, Box Elder; and his parents, Harold and Phene Lilly, Baltimore.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Ruth Bennett

BELLE FOURCHE - Ruth Bennett, 95, Belle Fourche, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Belle Fourche Long Term Care Center.

Survivors include two sons, Tom Bennett, Fort Collins, Colo., and Gerry Bennett, Spearfish; one daughter, Ann Faris, North Garden, Va.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.

Josephine Colombe

RAPID CITY - Josephine Colombe, 85, Rapid City, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, David Colombe, Rapid City; four sons, Lester Colombe, Eugene, Ore., William Colombe and Leonard Colombe, both of Rapid City, and James Colombe, Mount Vernon, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Elaine D. Berendes

RAPID CITY - Elaine D. Berendes, 73, of Rapid City, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Elaine was born August 31, 1928, to Gustave and Ida K. (Kahler) Martin at Colome, S.D.

She grew up in Gregory County. Elaine fell in love with Harold J. Berendes; they married September 3, 1948, in Spokane, Wash. They moved to Rapid City in 1954. They operated the Gaslight in Rockerville from 1964-1971. In 1971 they operated the Captain's Table in Custer until 1977. They own and operate Harold's Prime Rib and Steak House with their family starting in 1977.

Grateful for having shared her life is her husband of 54 years, Harold Berendes of Rapid City; 3 daughters, Marlene Berendes, Sandy Berendes and Patricia Ann Berendes, all of Rapid City; one son, Jim Berendes and his wife Anne of Rapid City; her mother, Ida K. Martin, 96 years young, of Gregory; one brother, Raymond Martin and his wife Carol of Bloomington, Minn.; four sisters, Ellen Noziska of Kalispell, Mont., Marie Swanson of Gregory, Ruth Page of Bloomington, Minn., and Barb Doty and her husband Chuck of Hudson, Wis.; two granddaughters, Dawn Michelle Jedrykowski of Rapid City and Amy Scull of Boston, Mass.; and one grandson, Andrew Scull of Denver, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her father; her brother Lawrence; her infant daughter, Susan Elaine; and son-in-law, John Jedrykowski.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, and one hour before services on Friday.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 28, at the funeral home, with Pastor Tanya Rist officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Hazel I. Eatherton

WHITEWOOD - Hazel I. Eatherton, 83, Whitewood, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pa.

Visitation will be Thursday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel and Friday one hour prior to the services at the church in Whitewood.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 28, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood, with Rev. David Baer officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery.

Hazel was born December 3, 1918, at Grindstone, S.D., to Oliver Axel and Martha O'Lena (Wold) Olson. She attended school through the eighth grade in Haakon County and graduated from Philip High School in 1935. Hazel was baptized and confirmed in the Bridges Creek Lutheran Church at Hilland, S.D., in 1937. She was employed during WWII as an accountant in the photo department at Lockheed Aircraft. Hazel married John R. Eatherton in Los Angeles, Calif., on April 12, 1944. The couple owned and operated J & I cafes and souvenir shops in Scio, Ore., Whitewood, S.D., New Underwood, S.D., and the J & I Gift Shop in Deadwood, S.D.

Hazel was the deputy superintendent of the Haakon County School District. She taught in Haakon County and Pennington County schools and at Philip, New Underwood, Mobridge, Lead, and Deadwood. She was instrumental in organizing the first Deadwood Junior High Library. Hazel retired as the Junior High Librarian in Deadwood.

Hazel was a member of the American Lutheran Church, Luther League; SDEA; NEA; ACEJ; AAUW; Delta Kappa Gamma; the Deadwood Chapter; Lead-Deadwood Education Association; was president of the Haakon County Education Association; Whitewood Senior Citizens; was a trustee for the Whitewood Library; State Library; Retired Teachers Association; and was a 4-H leader in Haakon County. She received many awards for her work at Lockheed. She also was listed in Who's Who in Elementary and Secondary Education. She was Teacher of the Year for her outstanding work in the "Reading is Fundamental" program. Hazel was a very dedicated teacher, especially in the individualized programs.

Her hobbies included painting, gardening, flowers, reading, sewing, and traveling.

Survivors include one son, John Roger Eatherton II, Chalfont, Pa.; one daughter, Janet Lucille Eatherton Kinsley, Nazareth, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Celeste Nadine, Melanie Linette, John Roger III, Robert Laurel, and Caitlin Jane Eatherton, and Richard Allen and Daniel Kent Kinsley; two sisters, Marjorie Angela Eggen, Lebanon, Ore., and Martha Lucille Hill, Byromville, Ga.; one brother, John Harold Olson, Scotts Mills, Ore.; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Her parents, her husband, one sister, and one grandson preceded her in death.

A memorial will be established at BHSU for a scholarship to assist a student from Philip, Deadwood/Lead, Whitewood, or Sturgis who is pursuing a career in Library Science.

Rachael Louise (Paulson) Wittnebel

NASSAU, Minn. - Rachael Louise (Paulson) Wittnebel was born November 29, 1911, the youngest of ten children born to Norwegian immigrant parents, Isak and Britha Westby Paulson at their homestead near Lily, SD. The family moved to Pierpont, South Dakota when she was six years old. After her father died, Rachael's mother moved the four youngest children to Sioux Falls where Rachael graduated from Augustana Academy and Augustana College.

She taught eight years in schools at Colome, Holmquist, Grenville, and Big Stone City, SD.

While a teacher at Big Stone City, Rachael met her husband, Robert, at a dance in Nassau, MN. They were married at Pierpont on August 28, 1938, and farmed near Nassau until Robert's death in 1972. Rachael continued to live on their farm through her 89th year of life. Robert and Rachael were devoted parents of six children: Robert, Kathryn, David, Thomas, Ann, and Paula.

Rachael was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a Sunday School teacher. She was an accompanist and piano teacher, 4-H leader, PTA president, and long-time member of the Trinity Lutheran Ladies Aid and Walter Homemakers Club. Throughout her life, she was a staunch advocate of education, encouraging her children and grandchildren to continue the family commitment to academic achievement.

Rachael enjoyed instrumental and vocal music, hardanger embroidery, conversations with her family and friends, and especially enjoyed traveling to visit her children and grandchildren. Those travels took her to many distant places, including Europe and the Middle East.

Rachael died Monday, June 24, 2002, in Rapid City, SD.

Rachael was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, one son, Thomas, one grandson, all nine brothers and sisters, and eleven nieces and nephews. Surviving children and their spouses are Robert and Frances Wittnebel of Nassau, MN; John and Kathy Sundby of Rapid City, SD; David and Marti Wittnebel of Rapid City, SD; Carlene Wittnebel of Revillo, SD; John and Ann Vaubel of Mapleton, MN; and Michael and Paula Toft of Tremont, IL.

Surviving grandchildren are Jennifer Wittnebel Styles, Bart Wittnebel, Celeste Wittnebel Lewis, Scott Wittnebel, Jill Sundby VanAlstyne, Johnny Sundby, Bobby Sundby, Laura Wittnebel Hughes, Karl Wittnebel, Carla Thole Peterson, Doug Thole, Stacy Thole Mock, Beth Thole Hunt, Amy Wittnebel, Andrew Wittnebel, Christopher Vaubel, Rachael Vaubel, Ryan Toft, Rachael Toft, Aaron Toft, Jessica Toft, Mikey Toft, Jacob Toft, Nicole Toft, and Haley Toft.

Also surviving are 22 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at Trinity Lutheran Church in Walter Township, MN.

Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery.

Muriel Morris

BELLE FOURCHE - Muriel Morris, 85, of Belle Fourche, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Muriel was born and raised on a farm in Perkins County near Bucyrus, N.D. She was the daughter of Melvin and Elma (Ankerson) Hanson, born December 28, 1916. She attended grade school at the Riverview School in Perkins County and attended and graduated from high school in Hettinger, N.D. Muriel attended Black Hills Normal School in Spearfish for one year and taught school at Bucyrus, N.D., for two years, following which she attended Black Hills Teachers College for a year and began teaching at Wasta, S.D.

She met Charles "Hoot" Morris while teaching in Wasta for two years and they were married in Newcastle, Wyo., on December 21, 1940.

While raising her family, she was a substitute teacher at St. Patrick's School in Lead, S.D., and was a very successful Avon representative. Muriel was always active with her children's activities and later with her grandchildren's activities. She was simply "always there" for her family, friends, church, school and community. She enjoyed playing the piano, boating and traveling. Later, she taught school for fourteen years at Pluma Elementary, West Lead Elementary, and Lead Central School until her retirement.

She was a devoted wife, mother, teacher and friend.

Grateful for sharing her life are her four sons, Dan Morris, Tom Morris and David (Betty) Morris of Lead, S.D., and Pete Morris and Mary Treder of Parker, Colo.; two daughters, Sally Garcia of Spearfish and Linda McKay of Belle Fourche, S.D.; a brother, Milton Hanson of Tucson, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Joan Wieser of Deadwood, S.D. Also surviving are nineteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Muriel was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one brother, Adolph.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2002, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish, with Fr. Kari Prendiville as celebrant. A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2002, at the church. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday at the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish. Burial will be in the Rose Hill cemetery in Spearfish, S.D.

The Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish has been entrusted with the arrangements.
