Wayne A. Edwards

BILLINGS, Mont. - Wayne Allen Edwards was born November 14, 1940 in Union Co., Iowa, the fourth of five children to James E. Edwards, Sr. and Ruth R. (Maynard) Edwards.

When Wayne was 2 years old, the family moved to Ziebach County, SD where he attended a country grade school, then graduated from Dupree High School in 1958.

He started his college education at Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD. His education was interrupted by a call to serve his country in the U.S. Army. After returning from the service, he completed his degree in Business at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD.

Wayne worked in Pierre, SD at the State Department of Education, then later as Business Manager for the Belle Fourche School District, Belle Fourche, SD.

His career took a different path as he moved to Missoula, MT where he was a dispatcher for Sammon's Trucking for several years. When Pete Sammons sold his business, Wayne moved to Houston, TX to start a trucking company for a group of investors in the trucking business.

Later on, he and a friend would start a new trucking company out of the Kalispell, MT area. Wayne became a licensed auctioneer at Western College of Auctioneering at Billings, MT. He and his friend, Gene Gabel, conducted everything from small estate sales, farm auctions, to large heavy equipment dispersals in various parts of the western United States. He was also everyone's favorite auctioneer at the traditional family reunions.

Known for his knowledge, and integrity in his field, he became a specialist in livestock dispatching all over the U.S. and abroad, assisting major cattle outfits such as Leachman Cattle Co. of Billings and Midland Bull Test, Columbus, MT. He helped buyers, sellers and cattle traders with his well-qualified and experienced cadre of truckers.

Wayne was a fan of the rough stock events of rodeo. One of the highlights of his life was serving as a horse wrangler during the Centennial Cattle Drive of 1989.

He had a special fondness for his nieces and nephews - all 21 of them considered him their favorite uncle. No task was too large or too small for Wayne's assistance - whether it be getting their balance on the first bicycle ride or advice on education and career paths. He kept a secret "stash" for urgent pressing withdrawals.

Wayne passed away, Wednesday morning, July 3, 2002, at St. Vincent's Hospital, Billings, MT.

He is survived by 3 brothers: Leonard (Velda) Edwards, Spearfish, SD; Jim (Sherry) Edwards, Fishtail, MT: Lloyd (Carla) Edwards, Lovell, WY and brother-in-law Leo Bakeberg, Spearfish, SD.
